    I bought this album the day it came out. I was a teenager and thought it was just a beautiful love song. In those days we didn't know all the private information about our favorite musicians. They didn't let you in to every detail of their lives the way everyone seems to do now. As an adult, finding out Robert Plant's child had died and this song was about him broke my heart. Still a classic song but it just makes me so sad.

    In the 80's, if the Last Song at your High School prom wasn't "Stairway", it was "All My Love".
    In a 1990 interview with Q magazine, Plant said. “In ’77, when I lost my boy, I didn’t really want to go swinging around- ‘Hey hey mama say the way you move’ didn’t really have a great deal of import anymore.”
    In American Songwriter, Jim Beviglia wrote "Plant...waxes mythical about looms and threads and mysteries that we simply aren’t meant to know. His conundrum is spelled out in the opening lines: “Should I fall out of love, my fire in the light/To chase a feather in the wind.” What he seems to be deciding is whether he should pursue an impossible reunion with his lost loved one or move on and find a way to live again. In a way, it’s not far off from Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” quandary."

      Funny how after 1977, Robert played Black Dog at every European 1980 show....must have got its import back. Robert wears his emotions on his sleeve...and his answers to questions about the past change depending upon his mood when you ask him the question.

      And….I could be wrong here…but I don’t believe he brought back Zep songs until circa 1986-88 when he decided he’d played enough with all the new electronic toys……after Now and Zen.

    This is the most difficult song of theirs for me to listen to due to the subject. It is very vulnerable and emotional. There is so much symbolism within the song. The instrumentation is stellar; Jonesy's beautiful synths which also add string sounds, while Jimmy's guitar adds tasteful flourishes and I think there's a 12-string on it as well. It is heavily emotional yet has moments of bright beauty.

I bought this album the day it came out, already it was #1. I thought the album was very of its time, and sounded very fresh. I had not heard a Zepp album for about 5 years, the last one being Led Zepp 1V, so this was a big surprise, I thought it was a big comeback, having missed their previous 3 albums. Caroselambra sounded great to me, though a little corny in the first minute (my opinion has changed on that now). But All My Love is still one of my favourite songs, I never get sick of it.

    Jimmy Page: "Bonzo and I had already started discussing plans for a hard-driving rock album after that (In Through The Out Door). We both felt In Through The Out Door was a little soft. I wasn't really keen on "All My Love." I was a little worried about the chorus. I could just imagine people doing the wave and I thought "That's not us." In its place it was fine, but I wouldn't have wanted to pursue that direction in the future."

    • @betseyr.9081
      @betseyr.9081 2 года назад +3

      What Jimmy didn't foresee was how this song would bring a whole new fan base to the band, much like "Stairway" had done years earlier, certainly didn't hurt their popularity or album sales! Kudos to JPJ for being onboard for this track, Robert needed this outlet for his pain! "I get a little bit lonely..." on the fade tears at the heart for sure.

    • @tektoniks_architects
      @tektoniks_architects 2 года назад +3

      @@betseyr.9081 Much more important than the growing fan base was the growing division in the band. Carouselambra's lyrics, written by Plant, clearly target Jimmy in a critical way, as did Hot's on For Nowhere's lyrics in Presence, and other tracks as well. Jimmy clearly states about All My Love: "That's not us.....I wouldn't have wanted to pursue that direction in the future." Jimmy is making that statement about a song that was deeply personal to Robert. This in and of itself suggests future conflict between the two of them for artistic direction for the band....which had been mostly Jimmy's call up until then, but given Jimmy's dependencies, he had lost control of.
      In their plans for a US Tour in 1980, Robert began to insist on several ground rules for his future involvement with the band: No Stadiums on the tour - only small venues. No more than two consecutive nights of playing before a day off. No more than a one month tour before a family break. Robert was beginning to assert his independence from Jimmy and LZ. Assuming Jimmy could have gotten himself clean and healthy (by no means a given), there is plenty of evidence that the band's days ahead were going to change significantly. Jimmy (and Peter Grant) were not happy about Robert's demands, but they had no choice but to accept them if the band was to stay together. But the closeness of the band was shaken after Karac's death, for sure.
      There is no indication Jimmy would have allowed the musical direction of the band to trend toward the ITTOD style. Robert lost his son, and was wanting to be less of a circus show, and less a "rock star." Jimmy was the founder and leader of the band, and he had traditionally set the vision for their journey. LZ was Jimmy's "baby." Jimmy wanted to get back to a harder, edgier style. In all likelihood, Zep's days were likely numbered, Bonzo's death aside. I suspect Robert would have eventually struck out on his own, assuming Jimmy survived his addictions.

    • @betseyr.9081
      @betseyr.9081 2 года назад +1

      @@tektoniks_architects Really was just commenting on the sensitivity JPJ showed by backing Robert on this one. The dynamics of the band had been changing no doubt but perhaps Jimmy was struggling with the recognition Robert had achieved as well, let's face it, they were right there out front and the spotlight wasn't only Jimmy's. I haven't checked but at this time in history I am guessing Jimmy was still childless and so the importance of family wasn't even part of his vocabulary, JPJ was unquestionably a family man all though the history of the band and maybe that contributed to their collaboration as well. If LZ hadn't lasted much longer (in the event that Bonzo had't died) it may well have been due to Jimmy and his inability to meet the needs of the others on all levels, not much different than what we saw with the breakup of The Beatles. In the end though, Robert has had the most successful solo career since the end of LZ without question.

    • @charlesgervais4673

    • @tektoniks_architects
      @tektoniks_architects 2 года назад

      @@betseyr.9081 JPJ was always the consummate pro. Jimmy wasn't competing for the spotlight with Robert - the music was always no. 1 for Jimmy, when he had control of himself. The main reason Robert took center stage on ITTOD was because Jimmy dropped the ball and didn't show up (due to drug dependencies), and Robert and JPJ filled a void.
      Jimmy wasn't childless - he had a daughter during his time with LZ, 4 others since. Robert has had the most successful solo career, mostly because LZ was the focal point and greatest achievement of Jimmy's professional life, and he never completely moved beyond LZ, "his baby." I've seen Robert live several times, and for much of his solo career, half of his live shows have been comprised of LZ songs. So as much as Robert insists on moving on from the past, he spends much of his time reliving his past.

    Why they faded the outro I'll never know. There are a couple of minutes of extra audio and it's some of the most emotional vocals and guitar they ever recorded. Given how JP is thought not to have contributed as much to this album as to all of the others, that extra outro would banish this pernicious perception!

      @@SalvoG Not entirely true. Jimmy and JPJ later said that they wanted to give Robert and his family space to grieve. Bonzo and Robert were friends before LZ formed....Jimmy and JPJ did not socialize with Robert or Bonzo outside the band's commitments. Whether you agree with Jimmy and JPJ for not attending the funeral is up to you. I'm just saying that Jimmy and JPJ felt it was "family time", and not their place to interfere. They felt if they attended the services the media would turn the funeral into a circus, and JP and JPJ didn't want that for Robert. It wasn't because they were divided....it was because Jimmy looked at his relationship with Robert as a friendly business collaboration. Robert thought otherwise, and thus his anger and angst towards Jimmy and the band afterward.

      There is no question - at the time of the album's release - that many loyal Zep fans were disappointed with the lack of guitar/heavy focus on the album. That doesn't make it a bad album....it does mean that Zep lost their edge, mostly because the central reason for the band's power was Jimmy....and he was caught in the web of heroin at the time. It was described as a pop album for the "once" heaviest band in the world, and that is not inaccurate, IMO.

As was mentioned, I don’t think the others wanted it on the album but did it out of respect.
