One of my favorites! Just heavy as hell, monster riffs, monster feel. The groove sounds like a fifty ton railroad car hammering those tracks whilst spitting fire and carbon, and Page flies over it all like a winged raptor, pulling out before getting sliced in half by the looming mountain tunnel.
And you're correct, it's easy to overlook this. Underrated gem.

I ignored the crap out of this album for a longtime ..I remember way back when I looked at it for the first time at a record store in the mall and thought WTF is a man and his wife and children doing looking at this damn thing sticking up out of the table and looked on the back cover and some lady has her had on the damn thing and her hand on a boys head .. I just put back ,I had no idea about an obelisk and what it meant, I was too young for that subliminal message jive shit .. I listened to in a low fi car stereo that a friend had in his car., ,I just could not get into it from being so in tune with the early Zep albums. About 10 years later I got a cassette version to give it another chance and it flowed in to my senses and the drumming here on this album was so upfront and the rest was more vivid that I ever realized before ..It is a great Zep album

Presence is a vastly underrated album - period. Previous to the recording, Robert, his wife, their two children, and Jimmy's daughter had been in a car accident in Rhodes. The kids had no major injuries (thankfully), Robert had a broken leg and other injuries, while his wife had a fractured skull and other very serious injuries (they considered it touch and go there with her for a while). Band management was able to get them back to England but not long after, Robert (and the rest of the band) was supposed to go into tax exile. At the time (I have no idea if this is still the case), if you were wealthy and spent a certain amount of time in the UK, you were taxed at a significantly higher rate. To prevent this, you had to reside outside of the UK for a certain amount of time. Certainly, not all wealthy people did this, but a lot did and now it was that time of the year they had to be out of the country, so Robert and Jimmy went to Malibu, California. Jimmy thought the best way to keep Robert's mind off things was to get to work, so they started this album. Robert didn't want to work; he was in a wheelchair, in pain, was scared he'd never walk again without a cane, worried about his wife, his family and couldn't even be home with them. He'd already been showing signs of questioning his life's path and his unhappiness will show even more in this album, including digs at Jimmy and manager, Peter Grant, whom Robert felt were unsympathetic to his suffering. When the rest of the band joined up with them (by this time they were in Munich) and got to work, it was a bit of heavy atmosphere, full of worry, stress, and future uncertainty, all of which is reflected in the music. They went back to a more stripped-down style, very direct, not a lot of experimentation. It became almost a battle of the wills - theirs against the forces of hardship. They all worked 14-18 hour days and when the tracks were done, the band left and Jimmy and the engineer spent another few 18-20 hour days to mix and produce the album. It wasn't complete and the Stones were due next in that studio so Jimmy asked Mick if he could have a couple of days of the Stones' studio time to finish. Mick agreed and when he showed up, an exhausted but triumphant Jimmy showed him the masters. Mick thought he was looking at a finished song or maybe a partial album but was amazed when Jimmy told him no, it was the entire album. They had completed an entire album in 18 days - the fastest since their debut album, which had been recorded in 36 hours.

I just looked it up, and in 1971, the tax rate for highest incomes was 75%, plus 15% additional on investment income. 1974, the tax rate for the highest incomes was raised to 83%, with an additional 15% added to any income off investments….making it a 98% rate if you were investing any of the money you were making. OMFG. No wonder they all bought farms and second and third homes instead of investing it. And Americans complain about paying any taxes at all…

This song was wonderful to hear for the first time for the Benefit Concert honoring the Late Ahmet Ertegun ( money that was raised went for several scholarships.)The concert was in December 2007 at London's O2. Jason Bonham was present at his drum kit in place of his father, John. At the end of the Concert Robert, Jimmy, and Jonesy all turned towards Jason and paid him tribute.
There were many bands that played with Led Zeppelin being the Headliner. So many luminaries came out to see Led Zeppelin play.
Led Zeppelin put out a concert DVD 'Celebration Day'. I have the cd and DVD, which also includes their rehearsal prior to the Big Concert! This is well worth viewing, I think that you'd enjoy it very much.

If you want to watch a different take on Kashmir, rather than the kid playing acoustic, I would suggest the version from the Page/Plant No Quarter tour…1994 or so…where it was more acoustic but they had a full Egyptian orchestra…which allowed them to really stress the North African/Middle East vibe of the song. Some hate it because it’s so different from the original. For myself, I love both…and love that whole tour and how Plant and Page re-imagined so many if their hits.

In 1976 when this was released the popularity of arena rock was waning in favor of disco and punk. This was the first and only Zeppelin album relegated to the bargain bins after its initial release. As I remember this album, more than their previous releases, was panned by critics as being pretentious and bombastic. "For Your Life" was my favorite song on the album, but I played the entire album incessantly.

SalvoG, I've been watching your reactions to Led Zeppelin songs for a while now, viewing each as you publish them, and something has occurred to me: By isolating each song as an individual entity, separate from the rest of the album, they often sound different from the way I remember them! Without the tracks that come before and after, some songs don't seem to have the same impact. For the fullest enjoyment, albums should be played start to finish, in the order they were recorded. That's how this music was intended to be heard, and the way most of us listened to it for many years! While LZ albums may not appear to have an overall theme, the sequence of the tracks is deliberate and contributes to the listening experience! While I understand why you can't play and react to a complete album in a RUclips reaction video, I hope you will consider listening that way off-camera,, and doing an overall album reaction.

Sal, when you were reading about this song and you read “the only time it was played live was at a benefit in 2007 with allot of important people in attendance” I thought I would see a “lightbulb moment” where you would realize that the “benefit “ referred to was the Celebration Day O2 performance in 2007. But I guess it didn’t click. We know you LOVED the sound of Kashmir from that concert, so definitely you should watch this song from the O2. IMO Much better than the studio actually, because Robert’s voice is much stronger. Singing from a wheelchair doesn’t lend itself to best vocals. Link ruclips.net/video/zuXUhOQzprA/видео.html

Just so you know, all the guys in the band, plus Peter Grant, were really pissed off about that book, and said that is grossly misrepresented them. None of them had any input on the writing of it. It was meant to be sensational and make money, and it did. There are other books out there that are more accurate…..Light and Shade is a good one. But as you mentioned, you’ve only read the one book since you were in school, so I doubt you’ll read it.
