I am 73 and the sad thing about growing up with Led Zeppelin is.. since then everything sucks.
Rest in peace John Bonham.. the drummer of all time
they recorded this live in the studio, its bascially a jam!!! bonham was INCREDIBLE!!!
before the overdubs
Along with Achilles Last Stand, In My Time of Dying is John Bonham’s magnum opus.
This song was actually recorded live in the studio, and that cough at the end was by Bonham. If you listen closely to the recording, shortly after that, Plant says, “cough,” which is followed by Bonham saying, “That’s gonna be the one, isn’t it?” In other words: Bonham was saying to the rest of the band, that’s going to be the version that will be used on the album, and he was right. He knew that they nailed it with that particular take.
Don't forget Fool in Rain. Bonham again front and centre
Or Nobody's Fault But Mine
The intro to When the Levee Breaks is also legend status. See documentary clip where Jimmy Page discusses it
John PUNISHED those drums. Hardest “gospel” song ever!
It’s a blues song….so that first slow part is no “intro”, it’s the blues part of the song….then they kick it into massive blues/gospel/rock. This is the remastered version where the drums were brought really forward in the mix ….more than any other song I think except perhaps Levee. Jimmy’s slide playing is superb. And it’s really cool to watch him do it live. Most band would have kept that banter off the record but Jimmy decided to leave it in, as The Beatles sometimes did, just to give a little peak behind the curtain as it were. So glad the sound engineer kept the tape rolling.
bonhams drums sound absolutely MASSIVE! nobody ever sounded like that!
In this album the drums were so raw and powerful!
I just want to give props to JP Jones for his KILLER bass line. He doesn't get enough mention....he is AWESOME!!
Ten years gone is my personal favorite but this album is just loaded
This is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs. John Bonham's drumming is next level on this. As a hospice nurse, the lyrics are surprisingly profound given sentiments that people often have near end of life.
This song is an absolute beast. Bonzo is beating those drums to hell and back.
As many have already said, the live version from Earl's Court, 1975, is a *must* listen.
100%!!!!
My dad went to one of the Earl's Court concerts.....always talks about how good it was! Lucky boy!
I was there, still have the tickets and program :-)
EVERY song on "Physical Grafitti" is a MONSTER!!! Without a doubt, the VERY BEST album in Zep's catalogue, and it's a double! An embarassment of riches!
Led Zeppelin never recorded a bad song.
When the song ends, my brain goes right to Houses of the Holy.
The kick drum in this is so sweet it brings tears to my eyes. And the groove. My favorite Zeppelin song by far. So, if Zeppelin is the best band ever, and In My Time Of Dying is their best song ever, it stands to reason that this is the best song ever. And I'll die on that hill.
By far one of my favorite zep songs.
i will never forget the ritual of a new zep album-when you get it home go off to your room and begin digesting like a drug and of course remembering what off the scale immortal body of work that preceded it --like one long evolving masterpiece....
“All I wanted was to have some fun…” 😂
Led Zeppelin’s longest studio track but it sure doesn’t feel like it. One of my favorites but what else is new? Talk about being taken to heaven.
The live version from Earl's Court 1975 is must watch for any Zeppelin fan.
Jimmy Page is absolutely mind blowing in the live version from 1975.
Best ROCK AND ROLL BAND EVER LED ZEPPELIN!
The 75 Earl's Court live version is just insane. Jimmy so thoroughly played that slide it blows my mind every single time I watch it. I read a comment once that said never has a Danelectro ever been so thoroughly played and it hit the nail on the head!!!!!
I was actually there 🙂
@@TheGeorgio424 my god you lucky man. I was unfortunately not born during Bonhams life. How was the show?
Great song from one of the best albums ever, it just keeps going! Enjoy. 🎸
The best album ever by the best band ever!!
I thought you'd love this! Jimmy on that slide! You need to see this live at Earls Court!! Superb!!
The entire album is so good a song like this is just one of the crowd. That's how incredible all the songs are on this album.
You rightly noticed the drums in a big way. Good Lord, that's some sick pounding by Bonzo. But not just raw power--he had that "swing," as they say, that groove and funk to his fills. Endlessly creative. This must be the Zep song I've listened to the most. At least parts of it. I like the slow intro, and have given it my full, admiring attention countless times, but I admit I've skipped even more often to the "fast" or "hard/jamming" sections. Towards the end, the roughly one minute from "Oh my Jesus" to "Oh, Lord, take me home!" with Bonham's fluid little roll trailing after is the most re-listened to part of ANY Zeppelin song for me. For me, It's fucking perfect, and perfectly amazing. I don't see how the band could have made it any better, that minute. I keep coming back to it over and over. It's like I worship it, lol! As others have mentioned, the live version (there are two from about the same time; I would say the "Mohtership" one is slightly better.) is absolutely worth checking out if/when you ever have another "live Zeppelin interlude" between albums (or, hell, during, lol!) Plant's stage charisma during the "slow" beginning will have you m-m-m-m-mesmerized, Page's slide geetar is outrageous, you can see JPJ's fingers laying down a bad-ass bass line, and a decent amount of time is given to showing the fabled drummer doing his fabled stuff. Every true Zeppelin fan has that moment where they discover a "hidden gem" like this, and then just dive deeper and listen to the whole damn catalog, and with eyes growing wider and ears fuller (deafer?) , realize that you're enjoying the hell out of (some might say "almost") EVERY damn song they made!. The rest of Physical Graffiti, my favorite album, will show you this, though I think you know it already!
Every song bro
Watch the live version from Earl's Court. Great song.
that soft spoken dude at the end saying oh yes thank you is jimmy
My wife liked to play musical snob to me, always telling me she knew what REAL musicianship was and I didn't. She knew what REAL blues are, and I didn't. Well...
I played Rush's 2112 Overture/Temple of Syrinx and this song to show the difference between Neil Peart's technical prowess and John Bonham's mix of technicality and primal hurting of his drum set....
Then I played Zeppelin's Since I've Been Loving You and Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs for blues...
She drank that cup of STFU right up.
LMFAO
Bonzo Smash!
the kick drum on this song is just absurd
If you continue to listen to Zep once these reactions are done, this is a song that will grow on you like fungus, and is one of the fastest 11 minutes you can spend. It also has the distinction of being Zeppelin's longest song. Be sure to check out the live version from Earl's Court 1975: Incredible!! Coming up is IMHO one of the best album sides in Rock and Roll. All three of these songs are brilliant. Houses of the Holy is a poppy, happy gem that was obviously left over from the previous album, Trampled Under Foot is a keyboard driven romp comparing a girl to a guy's best friend (his car), and nothing need be said about Kashmir.
For me, this is one of Zeppelin's top 3 songs along with Kashmir and When the Levee Breaks. Yet on most lists of Zep's greatest songs, this one is never mentioned. Rolling Stone mag ranks it #30, stating "Zeppelin's longest studio track transmorgified a gospel standard into a stadium hydra..." Two words I would use to describe this song are Epic and Tight. I can't think of a better example of LZ playing so tight as a single unit.
Most amazingly, the quirky ending was made up on the spot, the band was literally improvising and had not yet rehersed an ending to the song. After the cough, you can hear Bonham saying " That's gonna be the one, isn't it"?
Sadly, on March 17, 2017, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave closed a concert in Detroit by performing a short section of this song. He was found dead (by suicide) hours later in his hotel room.
Oh I didn't know that about Chris having done this song before he died. That's kind of... morbid, yet weird, yet appropriate? I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, it's just the title of the song. He was another huge loss to the music world.
I agree, though, this song is tight.
@@ptxaholic It's pretty disturbing to watch. The video is here. Forward to 6:20 in the song.
ruclips.net/video/kk8JHFc9VVE/видео.html
@ Charles Gervais I could not said it any better those 3 songs are Zeppelin at their finest jam. Keep rockin Peace ☮️
@@ptxaholic Now that he mentioned that, I do remember that being said.
This album is pure gold but then again everything they put out was golden fire.
ACID BLUES!!!
The funny stuff at the end...they did this live in the studio... I think Bonham coughed...then that was the engineer and one of them talking...I think Jimmy or Bonzo...yeah that was Robert joking around with Jimmy doing the little guitar funny too.
This one you need to see live!
the first time i saw led zeppelin was jan of 1975-before physical graffiti was released -they did 4 songs from an album they said was coming out later that year ! we recognized them when the album came out .. they were in my time of dying -i was open mouthed -then trampled under foot =classic even played at disco's at the time -then Kashmir -we were transfixed - then the final song from physical graffiti=sick again =great ending for an album that does not have a song that isn't classic, really=dont make em like dat anymore!!! damn glad i was born in 57!!!!! i was 17 at that show!
Thats Jimmy playing slide guitar the entire song. But as you said Bonham's drums dominate. Please do the live version from Earl's Court. It's one of the best live versions recorded by them. And a lot of fun watching him play slide. Where this song ranks for them is a very tricky question. It NEVER got any air play. Mostly because of the slow start and length of the song. So it is very much a hidden gem because I suspect many Zep fans would often skip by it at first because of the slow start. I know I did for years. Also, it's one of those songs that will grow on you the more you hear it. Having said that, the Zep fans that are more than casual Zep fans tend to really like this song. To me there are three hidden gems by them. This song. "How many more times" from the first album and "Hots on for Nowhere" on Presence. "Hots on for No where" was the only one of the three that ever got serious air play, yet I never hear any one bring that song up as a great song. Maybe it's not and I just like it alot. LOL.
Side 2. Houses of the Holy is a very good song but I think it's the second worst song on the first album just above Custard Pie. Trampled Underfoot I put right up there with Kashmir and In my time of Dying.
I took to this song as my favorite on the album from the first time I heard it. It has such an ethereal feel to it. And at the time I was going through a lot of emotional and spiritual upheaval in my life, so it fit right in.
that studio banter continues later in the album
Once the song gets going, Bonzo takes over and plays LEAD DRUMS, and Jimmy let's him! My favorite Zeppelin song! This is the one song where the studio version was never exceeded by a live version
You should check out the live version of this song. It's so good!!
Hermoso tema, hermosa letra. Desde Buenos Aires, Argentina, Saludos Salvo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This IS their best song. Period.
Greatest live take from the studio! When he incorporates the “cough” at the end is priceless!
Neil Peart had the “toys”,but he couldnt play the “game” like John Bonham……Bonzo was a beast !
This channel starts my day off on the "good foot", as James Brown used to sing. 😂
Im excited for Trampled Under Foot.
Bonzos kit had to be dripping blood after this! Hardest drums ever fucking recorded right here. Been listening to this track from time to time for 40 years. Never fails to impress.
Mr. John Henry Bonham beat those drums like they owed him money. And whenever I listen to Led Zeppelin so do my neighbors. My plans are karaoke tonight. Gonna do Ten Years Gone. God Bless and hagd
Physical Graffiti my fav zep album
This is the last song on my playlist at my wake. One of my favorite Zep songs it is so hard to pick just one there are so many bangers from these 4.
This is such a classic album. Has anyone ever said that you look like Vinny from Jersey Shore?
Imagine John Bonham, Neil Peart, SRV and Jimi Hendrix all jamming for God in heaven.
My favorite Zeppelin song! Bonham is a beast!
I love tuning my strat to open G and just playing along with this one or a backing track for it. One of their best, along with No Quarter, Ramble on, What is and what should never be, Thank You, Kashmir, and Rain Song.
This is a Bonham showcase song. He really pounds out this song. Miss Bonzo much.
that little noise in the groove was a quick stab from a slide on a guitar.
Louder. We can always turn down, but your max is our max.
"John Bonham! John Henry Bonham, on drums!"
Great honest reaction mate.
When you hear this a few times you’ll never feel like the intro requires patience. I absolutely love that slide intro. One of my top LZ tunes.
Yes. A serious beat combo!
LOVED this song from the first listening 40 years or so ago. After a bad day, put this one on with the volume on 11 as you drive home and play drums on the steering wheel. Great therapy!
Hope you would have done this live. In my humble opinion, the blues were not ment for records. Yes it is a cover, it’s an old blues song! 😎👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
He has been doing the live version after the studio. :) Maybe not right away always but eventually.
Love this song ✌️
Do the live 1975 Earls Court...So impressive
Love the Bass in this too.
Definitely my favorite..
This IS a remake of a 1928 Gospel song written by Blind Willie Johnson, Originally titled "Jesus is gonna make my dying bed".
He ultimately confessed his sins to God stating "He only wanted to have some fun "
Ps Robert Plant -Singer was the one who said "cough" Jimmy Page said Let's go have a listen
This is a great long trip album, but best to use cruise control otherwise the music can get your adrenaline running too much.
Thunder rock , sophisticated hard rock and roll brother !
Achilles last stand is my fav Bonham drum song
Just found You. I like your style. Keep On Keeping On.
That was John Bonham's cough lol
You won't find many Zeppelin songs that aren't ranked high on someone's list. I have been listening to them since 1973. The only song I dislike prior to the CODA Album(82) is Dyer Maker.
The CODA album was a compilation of songs that didn't make it on previous albums and in my opinion for good reason.
this is my fave zep song until tomorrow when you play "Houses of the Holy" and then that will be my new fave zep song, lol.
Rock GODS!
I love peoples reactions to Bonham's chops ..they don't really know what it is that's moving them.
Yeah!!! Blind Willie Johnsons original from 1927, revamped💙🤘🎶🎵🎶
Slide blues, one of their best!
A proper banger....
I bet you missed that this song was a big call and response, with the various members. Understandably because there was so much going on! Check it out again, it’s cool!
Is it the engineer shouting "that's got to be the one hasn't it then", and I wonder what the other takes sounded like.
I think this song is one of the best things I've ever heard. I see it as "Levee"'s older sister.
❤❤❤Robert ❤❤❤
It's a cover of an old traditional song that was gospel music
They were big fans of the blues so there will be strong influences of the blues .
I guess you could call them covers but the originals Would be unrecognizable except for the lyrics.
Salvo..live Earls Court either May 24 or 25. I think the 25th might be a slightly better version because Bonham and Plant let it rip more.
"Really strong drums", yeah if you say so!
This song is the fundamental of The Hammer of Gods sound....amazing Master Bonzo!
I thought I read somewhere that they recorded this in 1 take.
The best Groove any Rock band has had. Thanks to Jones Bonham and Page
Couldn't help but laugh in your intro you said you could be wrong and then later on in the song You're going to hear Robert Plant sing the same line but I could be wrong
My sister was in the same class as John Bonham at school. I'd love to be able to say I met him but she wasn't cool enough to hang with his crowd
*Morning Bro* by the way, tired of saying bro every day, lol. Is your name Sal, Salvador..? Seems more respectful... Anyway, nice huh.! Another example of why *Bonzo* is considered the greatest rock drummer by alot of folks and in the top 3 by almost everyone.! Robert and John were very close and Robert commented once that Bonzo's forearms were as big as his thighs. The man was a beast.! LOVED TODAY'S REACTION..! *David* ....
John Henry Bonham...the original " beast mode"
Please don't forget to react to the live version of in my time of dying!
First off....The Drums....
possibly Bonzo's best recording.
Os monstros sagrados do Rock.
Salvo ..also when you do Sick Again just go straight to the kick ass live version at Knebworth 1979 on the dvd.
It’s so fckn powerful ..
I wanted to say, I just saw the Tony Iommi documentary and he was talking about his friendship with John Bonham. Before he joined up with Zeppelin he kept getting thrown out of bands because he was too loud.
Earls Court live Mothership version
Just take my body home. It's a cover. Nina Simone sang it too
