Zeppelin is basically a power trio with a vocalist. It's kind of astounding actually that they can create that much music with just those three guys. And then you add Plant's amazing vocals on top and you have yourself something truly divine.
Yep! And ALL the members had this quality, but maybe Robert most of all--exquisite TASTE: When to put something (and "Oh!" or "Ahhhhhyeeaahhh!" or just a sigh in, when to leave stuff out, back off, not go overboard (oddly enuf, perhaps, i'm including Bonzo here, lol) . Like any generalization, this can be taken exception with, but this is what I think one of their "secret weapons" is.
His harmonica was amazing too!
@@joescott8877 I've always thought one of the great things about Bonzo was that he didn't over-play. We all know that he could go to town, big time, but he never did it gratuitously. If the song called for it, sure, but not every song requires balls-to-the walls banging on the drums. Bonzo knew when a song required a softer touch, and he knew when to go big. He never confused the two. He really was a brilliant player.
Correct my friend , that’s why with a rhythm section like Jones and Bonham Page gets to weave his magic riffs and solid , without that the solos would sound flat . There’s a lot of great players in rock , but no other band had the chemistry they had . What other band could put together guitar orchestra like compositions, this one song remains the same , Achilles last stand then move to the rain song ten years gone Then acoustic, they are the most original innovative rock bands period . Playing is one thing But to write them is the hardest thing to do Bonham enabled Page to run either it .
I love the playfulness at the very end.
Robert knew Jimmy was waiting for the final word for the timing of the final note and he fakes him out into playing it early, hence the smile.
Robert’s vocal break at the end when he’s just spittin out the American black blues after 5 3 hr plus shows in 8 days proves that he was the greatest rock n roll singer of his time. No one can do that.!!

This is a classic blues slide guitar sound. He's wearing the slide on his middle finger and switches between using the slide and the first and third (and pinky) fingers like no one I've ever seen!
Page uses the slide on his ring finger
Jimmy did screw up his ring finger (I think ring) and was forced to play differently depending on the night in 1975.
I use the slide on my third finger. If I remember right I think Joe Walsh uses it on his second but third and pinky finger are pretty common actually

I have heard plenty of live slide guitar but this has a uniquely raw, metal, grungy sound. I could listen to it all day.
He does play guitar and harmonica, tambourine. I love when he plays the harmonica. He does the blues so good 🥰

As others have said, Robert Plant CAN play the guitar. I don't think there are many songwriters who don't play at all! On stage, he played harmonica, maracas, and tambourine, but his real instrument has always been his voice, and we are glad of that! Some folks make too much of his vocal range and the wailing high notes, but his real strength has always been in the power, emotion, and energy he brings to his performances.
No doubt that is the dirtiest sound I have ever heard, hands down. Just raw. Fantastic.

It is a stunning performance 😀😲 one of my favourites along with Achilles Last Stand' live at Knebworth 1979. They play like a machine, it's wonderful and beautiful, never to be repeated. Great stuff Salvo. So epic Jimmy playing slide guitar. Roberts voice deeper register at this point but love his vibrato that is more prominent at this time. Love the Earls Court concerts
Page and Plant are superb in this, and pay close attention to Bonham on the drums OMG!, but Jones's bass is simply insane ...
They were all bad ass in this performance, but Jonesy was the glue that held it all together!!
Robert did play guitar on Boogie with Stu (although uncredited). He could play, but rarely did.
I was at one of those 'Earls Court ' concerts back in 75! 18 years old!
But I'm ashamed to say that I was so wasted that I really don't remember a note!!

That's not a steel guitar that's a electric guitar made by Sears and Roebuck look at the headstock steel guitars got a foot pedal. That particular guitar is worth a lot more than JCPenney's would pay

The guitar is a Danelectro tuned to an open E major chord (pretty standard for blues slide). The unique lipstick pickups and body construction of Danelectros (here through cranked Marshall 100 watt stacks) give this unique sound.

After 1973 Plant strained his vocal cords and had surgery for that! But he came back and could still belt out those lyrics!
Page is playing a steel guitar and wearing a metal slide on his left ring finger to get that sound. Plant does play the acoustic guitar fairly well but vocals are more his thing. I believe he plays guitar in the studio versions of Battle of Evermore and Boogie with Stu, and during some of his live performances after LZ broke up.
Plant's voice did change a bit after he had surgery to remove nodules on his vocal cords but he also had a series of illnesses and experienced some exhaustion during non-stop touring during that time period that probably played a part in how he sounded. And, as you say, sometimes it's the way he sang a particular song.
I could be wrong but I believe their largest audience was around 77,000 at the Pontiac Silverdome in '77. Pretty much however many seats a venue held, they sold out. ;)

Just gotta love the sound of Jimmy's Danelectro. He got that sound by using DADGAD (Celtic) tuning.

I was at their largest concert April 30, 1977, festival seating at the Pontiac Silverstone. Attendance approx 78,000. I was on the 50 yard line. Concert started about 2 hours late and went until about 1 am. Incredible experience. There's a bootleg of it on RUclips easy to search for.
There was likely over 150,000+ on the first night at the Knebworth 1979 show - estimates vary from 120,000+ to over 200,000.

Robert is a fine guitar and harmonica player. But playing guitar while trying to remain focused on his amazing vocal range and phrasing would be extremely difficult, and would probably affect the overall performance. John Paul Jones was quite capable of covering songs that needed an extra rhythm section with the simultaneous use of the bass pedals on his keyboard, giving Plant more freedom to express his considerable talents as the band's vocal frontman.
I may point out that Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, who also did a lot of vocal play when singing, also often supplied rhythm and acoustic guitar or flute while singing between notes. Still, your comments ring true, this was a 3 piece band and Roberts instrument was his voice.
The guitar sounds the way it does is because it is a 1960s Dan Electro with "lipstick" pickups also he is using a metallic slide like the old blues players did!
This my friend is HARD ACID BLUES ROCK. The STANDARD for all time. No one comes close.
It's a Danelectro guitar played with a steel slide on one ring finger, slide also there's palm muting.
He plays an acoustic guitar whilst they are in a Earl's Court
There's a special tune called Open A: E-A-E-A-C♯-E (identical to "Open G" tuning but with every string raised one step or two frets), and he uses for the slide on his little finger for that distinct sound.

Robert can play guitar. He added rhythm guitar on 'Down by the seaside', which is on Physical Graffiti. The audiance numbers for the Earls Court shows were about 17,000 for 5 shows. It was originally 3 shows but a weekend had to be added due to demand. Their highest stadium attendance was just over 76,000 at The Pontiac Silverdome in 1977. Knebworth in 1979, was 200,000 and because of demand for tickets they played the following weekend to another 85,000.
Robert can play a little guitar...plays harmonica very well but he mostly is an amazing singer! Yes this was the time after his throat surgery.
He's actually a pretty food guitar player. But not a guitar performer.

RE: Robert playing instruments, I was lucky enough to see him perform recently with Saving Grace, and he played bass on one song - introducing himself as 'Robert Plant: occasional bass', which I believe he is listed as on Led Zeppelin I ('Robert Plant: vocals, harmonica, and occasional bass'. He also played harmonica at the concert and it was EPIC. His band, including Suzi Dian, were incredible too.
Plant doesn't need to play the guitar as he has page the best guitar player ever.
Sal,that is a Danelecto guitar,and a steel 'tube' to slide on the 6 string,......that and the 'magic' ;-)

It sounds different because it's live! It's impossible to do Led Zeppelin live and sound like the studio! Because Paige is a wizard as a producer and he overdubs so many different guitar parts that you can't do live on stage with one guitarist! Page does a awesome job live by improving! He is the guitar wizard!
Zep replicating a studio song live, note for note, is never what Zep was about. Whereas a lot of bands created a song, and considered it "finished" when it came out on the album, for Zep, the album was just a "snapshot" of where that song had evolved-to at the time an album was released. The life of a song with Zeppelin was from the song's conception right up until the last time they played it in concert, and it was a "living thing," always growing, morphing, and evolving. That is the essence of Jazz, and Zeppelin was essentially a heavy blues/jazz/rock band.

i have seen him strum acoustic guitar in 77 and also he killed it killed it on harmonica for nobody's fault but mine at that same show!!1
Plant had throat surgery around 1971 or 72, this was in 1975. If you look for it, there is a voice difference prior to 73 or 72, but I never notice it until it's pointed out.
Its an open G tuning from low e to high e 6th tune down to d 5th tune down to g 4th d, third g, second b, first d then put a slide on your finger and rock it out.
I think the first reaction you did to this song you talked about this being a drum driven song. I said you should watch this and see how much Jimmy puts into it. Not to take anything away from John's great performance.

Robert can play guitar a bit. He does play on Boogie With Stu while Jimmy plays mandolin, however, he did mention somewhere in an interview (paraphrasing) why should he play guitar with Jimmy in the band? We told you about cues onstage and this performance has a lot of them - every time Jimmy turns to look at Bonzo, he's giving song direction. Another example, near the end of the song, when Robert is repeating "Jesus" while Jimmy plays, he's looking at Jimmy and once, even yells "OH!" at Jimmy but not into the mic to try to get Jimmy's attention and watches Jimmy change into the finale part and he adjusts his singing accordingly (it happens around the 18:20 mark on your reaction video). Robert had vocal chord surgery around 1973 or 1974 and this concert was recorded in 1975. Vocal surgery is not uncommon for singers in general, but it also didn't help that he smoked, drank, and generally didn't take care of his voice but he was not alone in that regard.
I think largest crowd as a single act was Detroit 77, 80,000. Knebworth was 200k or so.

Hey brother, you may want to check out the movie that Led Zeppelin made, if you haven't already. It's called "The Song Remains the Same". You will CLEARLY see why most knowledgeable rock musicians state that Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock band of all time.
Jimmy's playing slide guitar where he has a cover on his finger that slides along the guitar strings. It would usually be made of metal. Robert has played guitar in a previous band but not in LZ. Jimmy is the best at guitar playing and Robert is the best at singing so in LZ they stick to what they are best at.

Robert Plant will tell you his "natural" instrument is bass guitar. He said once he would peck out a melody when he had an idea and Jimmy would take it from there. He played harmonica live and he and Jimmy would play harmonica on tape.

wow that was hot i saw them do this in 75 in Indianapolis before the album was out it seemed so hard core at the time -cant wait til you get to studio of ten years gone the riffs have such a unique feeling....this whole damn album is off the charts you should consider joining bron-yaur and down by the seaside in one session since the former is shorter in length and they fit well together-especially after in the light which i also love as well =so so unique

It's played in open A tuning, so technically tighter. But it's all about the cheap hollow body guitar, lipstick pickups, and the slide.

Robert was a loose cannon....the band never knew where he was going next with his lyrics, live! But they usually responded, which is another reason they were so great live.

As far as attendance I believe it was 1973 Atlanta Braves Stadium with almost 50,000.
Then the Pontiac Silverdome I believe was over 70,000 in 1977. What show too!
All their open air shows in 1973 and 1977 ( none in 1975 ) drew well over 40000 each show.
These Earl Court Shows were about 18,000 attendance in each. It was a welcome back to England kinda gesture. The band had been in America and other parts of Europe for several years prior.
These were very important shows for the band. England is not fond of their musicians when they get ignored and spend too much time in America. LZ were criticized and scorned by there peers for their rush to America immediately after the formed.

sorry to mention that again but the best performances are from May 24th, May 25th is great of course but a notch off for some reasons, only fact is that the quality of the videos is a bit better

Of course Plant's voice sounded different in 75. He was 19 years old when the band formed in 68. His balls probably hadn't dropped by then.

I have sang all my life and wanted to be a singer, Let me tell you about a being the front of the band and singing the same everynight! Very hard to do.
Plant played guitar occasionally on his solo concerts but to my knowledge never with Zeppelin. With Jimmy Page on stage, who would want to compete with that? For many years LZ held the world record for the most attendees at a single act show. I believe the show took place in Florida and was attended by about 56,000 people.

Robert does play guitar, but not with Zeppelin. I’ve seen him play a guitar in a video with a guy who had a guitar supposedly from Elvis. You need to listen to that fretless bass. JPJ is right there with Jimmy through the whole song.

Unfortunately, this is the poorer version of the two Earl’s Court performances of this song that are on YT. The one with “Mothership” in the title is superior and was officially released in the 2003 Led Zeppelin DVD.

Did you do in a metal finger slide?
He uses a slid instead of his fingers on the strings. Whether he tunes the guitar a little flat in this song, I am not sure. Other songs the guitar is turned differently than standard guitar tune. Not sure I explained it well enough.
Robert lost his prime voice after 1972. He got some in 1980 but it was never the same.
