If there is a Zep song that is going to get stuck in my head, this is it. Great song, but boy are you in for a treat tomorrow with "In My Time of Dying". The '75 live version is killer.

One of LZ's most underappreciated songs, this was originally cut from the previous album (HOTH). Most people have never heard this song as it received very little radio play. It just goes to show how great LZ was; for most other bands, recording this song would be the highlight their careers yet it was almost a throwaway for Led Zeppelin. Buckle up for what comes next!!!
The building on the album cover is in NYC (I believe 78 St. Mark's Place). The same building was later used in the Rolling Stones video for Waiting on a Friend.

96-98 St. Mark's Place. The actual building has one more story in height than what you see on the album cover, but they cropped it out to fit the square format of the album cover.

You mention the album cover artwork for Zeppelin is amazing. They used a company called Hypnosis for many of the albums, and they were some of the most complicated to create and expensive covers of all time. The one for this album, each "window" was really a cut out and each of the two record sleeves had pictures on both sides that you could put into the overall album sleeve for a different feel. Wait until I tell you about the album cover and sleeve for In Through the Out Door. One of the most complicated album covers EVER

The apartment building on the cover of Physical Graffiti is located on St. Marks Place, in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Here is an interesting bit of trivia:
The first record that Jeff Buckley ever owned was Physical Graffiti. In the early '90s, before he formed his band, he regularly performed at a café called, Sin-é (Shh-nay), which was located on the same street of said apartment building, just doors away. In July and August of 1993, Jeff played two shows at said café, which would be released as a four-song EP called, Live at Sin-é. For its 10th anniversary, in 2003, it was expanded into a double album. Included in the tracklist is a cover of Night Flight by Led Zeppelin, which is on Side four of Physical Graffiti.

On vinyl it is a standard double album (2 lp's, so 4 sides). The album packaging won an award the year it was released. The windows in the building are die cut out. The folded inner cover with the song list on the inside wraps around the inner sleeves holding the records and the letters of the band name show up in the windows. If you place the inner selves on the outside of the inner cover there are pictures of the band members and other historical people that show up in the windows.

The most unique thing about Robert Plants singing is that he moves slightly off register upward away from the pitch of the guitar and bass, yet still remains perfectly in tune with both. If you listen closely to his vocal style it's almost as if he's singing an isolated second register harmony as a melody lead. He often sings like this and I can't think of any other lead vocalist who does that.

You said "If they keep doing this" They won't. They actually ratchet it up to even higher levels after this song. The next song "In my Time of Dying" is mind blowing. It's a remake of an old gospel type song that Page shows off his slide guitar skills. This is a MUST to watch the live version from Earls Court in 1975. For a long while this was my favorite Zeppelin song and it's still in the top 5. After that Hoses of the Holy is a solid song but a step down from "dying" and really should have been on the previous album. But then "Trampled Underfoot" Amazing song thats inspired by the VERY old Robert Johnson Tune, "Terraplane Blues." Or is it Terripin? I have heard it called both. Anyway a Terraplane is an old car from the 30's. And this is another song you should watch live from Earl's Court. And finally Kashmir ends the first album. Arguably their second most famous song only to Stairway and frankly, I like Kashmir 100x better than Stairway. Kashmir will take you on a journey. It's hypnotic.
I mentioned before the album cover art is an old tenement building in Manhattan just north of Houston Street. Not far from Chinatown and Little Italy and Greenwich Village. If I remember correctly, the letters in the window are on a wheel or some sort of sliding device that they can change.

Physical Graffiti as a whole is an amazing effin (pardon me) masterpiece!!! Your love of guitar ….This album is gonna be one of your faves for sure with KASHMIR & IN MY TIME OF DYING alone…. Both of those have killer live versions as well Salvo….. KASHMIR Live at Knebworth 1979 or 2007 O2 Arena & In my Time of Dying …. Earls Court 1975 2nd night….Jimmy and JPJ are both wicked awesome in this performance. In interviews over the years Robert has said Kashmir is the quintessential Zep, he wishes they were known more for Kashmir not for Stairway. Kashmir is Robert’s favorite Zep song which is about his time spent in Morocco (not Kashmir) The cover is really interesting. The windows are cut outs, each one has different pic in it, or you can just have the letters showing spelling out physical graffiti ,my fave is the window with Bonzo & Plant. The building on the album cover is still standing. it's in New York, I think.

This song is Robert experiencing the whirlwind of change while longing for a bit of the simpler days (if we could just join hands, that's all it takes). The buildings on the album cover are real and located at 96-98 St. Marks Place in Manhattan. The windows of the building are cut outs and there are extra cards inside so you can change the view by sliding out the cardboard cards. One card has the red "Physical Graffiti" letters and if you flip it over, I think it has black and white windows, while another shows all four of the band, plus other assorted celebrities as if you were looking in the windows at them. The title was coined by Jimmy as a way to convey the amount of physical energy and creative writing that had gone into producing the recordings for the album.

I understood it as him missing his family while away touring, but also being concerned about the plunder and degradation he sees in the environment, perhaps thinking people could stand up against that if they could all hold hands.

@@heliotropezzz333 I haven't heard the family angle before, but he's definitely getting a bit tired/disillusioned with the ever increasing excess in a lot of areas. He has always said (paraphrasing) it was about the music but Zeppelin became a juggernaut. In a different article, when discussing Sick Again, he said he missed the old times when they first started and they hung out with people like the GTOs who he could loon about with and have a good time.

@@henriettaskolnick4445 Interesting. Thanks. The family angle is just my interpretation, nothing I've read. He says his woman is on the dark side of the globe (or words to that effect if I recall correctly) and after that comes the wish that they could just hold hands.

@@heliotropezzz333 personally, I think our Robert may have been a bit crafty with that lyric because it could also be regardless of where he is, he may have a "love on the dark side of the globe". I have no proof of intention, however, for that one.

@@henriettaskolnick4445 True. A lot of his lyrics are ambiguous or vague and rather than explain them he says it's up to the listener to decide what they mean.

Double albums were not that unknown back then, even if they were much less common. For example, seven years before this The Beatles released a double album, The White album, and it was very successful.
