LZ is for me the GOAT band ever. I just can't explain why, but The Rover has always been one of my favorite LZ songs. As Andrew said, it does not seem a difficult song to play, but it is so well executed (tone, riffs, solo, sound). It is simply an amazing song and I doubt anyone could play it (sounding) like this. For me, it is in the top 10 LZ songs! Thanks for reviewing this Andrew.
This was the first album I ever purchased with my own earned money. I mowed lawns like many of us kids did in junior high. Then I went to the store and bought this album for $11.95.
Being a singer can’t be underestimated as an instrument, because it is and all four were excellent at there craft in there own right but as a foursome nobody can ever touch them.
@@basher5107 Robert contributes so much toward the end with his ad-libs setting off Jimmy's gritty "gettin' down" jamming transitions (e.g. starting at about 11:15 and until he fades out repeat singing "Next time")
You can say all you want about the 3 instrumentalists in the band(and rightfully so), but you absolutely cannot understate the importance of Plant to the band. His voice brought so much character to their music and his presence and charisma on stage massively impacted the band’s success. His innate sense of melody and the way his vocals flowed perfectly along with the music in every song. Led Zeppelin really owes so much to Robert Plant.
@digiorno1142 I think they're all amazing, top shelf, all top #5 but I think Bonham is still by far the BEST and most distinctive member of the band. NO ONE would've or could've done what Bonham did for this band. I know he might never have shined in another band but he is Zeppelin.
Believe it or not, this song started as an acoustic blues number way back during the sessions for the 3rd album. It would later get worked on during the Houses of the Holy sessions and finally find it's way to Physical Graffiti. Jimmy has a nice and neat solo and, in my opinion, Jonesy's single note bass line beneath the moving guitar riffs give a hint of the direction of a lot of future 80s hits which were played from a rhythm standpoint. The thing folks don't often realize is that Bonham and Jimmy practiced quite often with just the two of them, which meant either could go off and still find each other seamlessly. Then, throw Jones into the mix, who could be rock solid, steady or blaze his own trail on occasion and it becomes musical alchemy. To my knowledge, only snippets of this was played live; often they'd start this before switching up to play Sick Again.
A great reaction to one of my favorite Zeppelin classics. This is an excellent song and an excellent performance by everyone involved. A great request, also!
