Jazz drumming in a classic rock song. Bonham really was another level. Also Page's solo is absolutely filthy - the tone, attitude, attack and flourish is perfect. What a band
There's so much energy in this song, it's insane. I love how you can hear him yelling out a couple of times near the end of the song. Here's a quote from him; "I really like to yell out when I'm playing. I yell like a bear to give it a boost. I like our act to be like a thunderstorm."
Man did I pick a great time to subscribe to your channel!! They released Zeppelin I & II both in 1969! Imagine putting out the caliber of music on these 2 albums released in January & October of the same year! Pretty amazing 💥💥
I believe the term ‘back door man’ was an old blues thing. The idea was that when a husband or partner came home after a hard working day, when he opened the front door he immediately heard the back door slam. Thus a backdoor man was someone doing what he shouldn’t be doing with your wife ! Can’t wait for the rest of this album, best wishes and happy new year from UK (Jim)
Yes. Plant also makes reference to this in Since I've Been Loving You: I open my front door, hear my back door slam You know, I must have one of them new fangled New fangled back door man
as you said - magic. John Bonham swung, grooved and created with layers of jazz, big band, funk and rock..the complete package. Once again Andrew, cheers for the informative insights. Pete/Uk.
An incredible piece of music. As far as the drumming: it's great to go back and listen to this again and pick up all of the unusual rhythms of Bonham, and gain a greater appreciation for how great he was.
Let me say, I can’t believe it’s taken you this long to actually react to the complete studio version!😊… The isolated drum track is fantastic, but hearing it in context with the greatest song of all time (yes I said it!) is paramount… LOVE IT!!!
If I ever had to choose one song as my favorite song ever, this would be it. That drum/guitar reintro mid way through gives me goose bumps every single time I hear it.
EPIC!! So happy we are starting a new chapter in Zep magic🎉 So glad Andrew you are hearing the entire song... can you imagine hearing this for the first time in 1970 like I did.....MIND BLOWN💥 BONHAM'S THE MAN
I’ve seen Jimmy Page speak about how effective Bonzo was when introduced a little later in songs. I think that’s why he had so many great intros, Jimmy was the producer and recognized Bonzo’s greatness.
This is absolute FIRE!!! @AndrewRooneyDrums THANK YOU for this great reaction and analysis and bringing us Led Zep 2 in all its glory!!! Following along with Drumeo and giving us your insights are priceless! Drums are my favorite instrument in a band and Bonzo is my favorite drummer and how you picked up on his ghost notes and how that is part of what makes his playing special, I had never heard that analysis before and reminds me of why I subscribed to your channel so early on, turning to your drum teaching insights, even though I am not a drummer. I know that was a long sentence, but I wanted to get it out, LOL, of what makes your channel and reactions and analysis so unique. This LZ 2 week is going to be EPIC, as my friend Susanne Lasch said and we both THANK YOU again for taking on LZ 2!!! :) Such a great all time classic rock album. :)
Well Done! Thanks to Suzanne Lash, Finesse Muse and of course to our host Andrew Rooney. I must have come around here sometime when Zeppelin (John Bonham) songs were more prevalent, just could not pass up this New Zealander and his own chops. The best way to open up your mind/heart is to learn understand other cultures around the globe. We all bleed red and shouldn't have to spill it just to prove it. Thanks for keeping it REAL and love your humour, a happy heart is a young heart.
Reminds me of Keith Richards who, iirc, called Zep a swing band or something similar. I assumed he meant like bands of the 1940s. I think Zep made a lot of other bands envious.
As far as I know Bonham hardly ever muted his snare with his left stick, it was always just his hand. If you watch the drum solo from Royal Albert Hall, you’ll see an example of this.
Thanks Andy,Susanne, & @finessemuse2123 Love this so much! Really enjoying this kick-off! Would love to see a reaction video to this live-Royal Albert Hall 1970 but if not, please check it out on your own-(whole concert preferably)you can actually see alot of Bonham’s playing and it was a real eye opener to all their talents. Even better when you watch 73 after that.
Hear the hihat pedal....? You can hear the squeak of the spring in his Ludwig kick pedal, like micro second before the bass drum beat in most songs. I miss when music was real, made by real people with real instruments, done with real feelings, soul, and, emotions.
I think I heard Bonham didn’t know how to read music, at least not in the beginning, maybe eventually did. The 4 of them just melded together so perfect, as someone said, they were branches of the same tree. I don’t think any other band comprised of all musical geniuses, they all had input into creating the sounds & often the lyrics too. Other bands have a couple good songs on an album, all of Zeppelin’s song are great throughout, with maybe just a couple good ones.
remember hearing this for the first time at work. me, another young guy and a bunch of older white guys, blacks, and asian ancestry older guys. the young guy and i looked at each other and he ran to turn it up and the oldest white guy went and changed the radio to some easy listening channel while the rest were growling about hippie crap. real generation gap there.

This kind of drumming might seem relatively standard to our ears these days when we're so saturated with access to all kinds of drumming thanks to the internet, and drumming has advanced quite a lot since the 60s and I'm not trying to take anything away from Bonham by saying that - he is my favourite drummer, but just imagine hearing this kind of drumming for the first time in the late 60s and early 70s. It blew people's minds what he was doing, and it still does to be fair. Changed my entire life hearing this band for the first time at 16.

Why didn’t you start w first album? Love the reactions. You must know the back door references, are about cheaters sneaking in and out while man at work back in these days!
Aw, man, where did my comment go? Is RUclips just arbitrarily deleting comments with links these days? It was intended to be informative and certainly not spam. 😞
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I figured it was something like that. Anyway, you wondered in your video if that was Bonham on congas. It was. The Wall Street Journal ran an article back in 2014 with photos of the Olympic Studios sessions for LZ2, including Bonham recording congas for the middle part of Whole Lotta Love. The photos are not terribly difficult to find.

It sure has a swing to it!
I’ve been listening to this song since I was 12 years old. I’m 59 now. It never gets old.
John Bonham the best drummer ever

@@AndrewRooneyDrums Oh, I will for sure!!! Andrew Rooney for the SCORE!!! :)
The line, "Shake for me girl, I wanna be your back door man" is a reference to the "back door man" of blues cliché
Bonham = swung. I just love listening to him play.

Happy happy New Year Andy. Yay LZ week. Thanks!!
Happy new year!
Riding in the backseat of my parent 65 Pontiac Grand Prix, they had this on the AM radio!
Beautiful
One of the best albums in the history of rock. Bonzo & JPJ really step up and stand out.
It's very Swung on the 4 to the Floor
Another song he does some drumming on is, Achilles Last Stand, amazing song all the way around.
I’ve done that one!
Always unbelievable! Swung!!!!!! Bonham...the swinging rockin drummer
🙌
WLL, TWSS!😅
I remember the cool drums/congos only version ya shared! That was cool🤘🏼
Yeah was great hearing it isolated
Magic!!❤❤❤❤❤

I forget what song it is, but it's very prevalent. Possibly since I've been loving you, but you can hear his kick pedal squeak with every hit..
If it has Bonzo?.
I'm in!
Let it rip Andrew.
LET'S GO!
Masterpiece ❤ 😉👌🥁👑
Finally someone reacted to the FULL version of this song and not that chopped up edited version that most reactor's use.
Glad to do it!
When kids acidentally listening one part this song I explained that as RP try hard to sneeze. But we, adults, know it's "sneeze of love". 😂

My surname is Coolin (shh, there's not many of us around) and this is my anthem.
The next track has a fantastic bass line. Jones kills it
Yep, swung sixteenths. Beautiful. Excellent video as usual. 1969 I think.
Swung alright
Cozy Powell has some awesome drum entries that can hold their own vs Bonham, imo
they were best of friends
Yup Cozy is a beast!

I think Robert was talking about fixing the hinges on her back door. Honestly.
Greasing them up so they stop squeaking.

What I liked most about Bonzo's drumming was that he played the drums, not the cymbals.
Swung....
Released October of 1969.
This song is the reason my 14 year old ass has a girlfriend
React to Fool in the Rain!!
Is this swung? Does Howdy Doody have wooden balls?
It’s not swung, but it is swingy. 😂
It's between the cracks
Yup! 👌

swung
Is it swung? According to Ginger Baker, Bonzo couldn't swing "a sack of shit". I'm not a musician, but I thought that was a bit harsh!
Yup I’ve heard that.
Poor Ginger
