Ok case in point with ELP. Could you do a reaction to ELP Live in Zurich Switzerland 1970 the full concert. It's on 52 minutes long, but Carl Palmer does at least 2 sick and long drum solos like i've never seen before, with the exception of ELP live at the California Jam, 1974. That performance became the double album Welcome Back My Friends to the Show that Never Ends. The California Jam concert is recorded on live video and is absolutely a mind blowing masterpiece!
I'm 66 ,never have been and never will be a musician. But adore Zeppelin. This guy also makes it all more interesting. He would make a great teacher in my honest opinion 🤓
This album was recorded at a manor house with the name of Hedley Grange. The drums were set up in the hall and the microphones were draped over the upper floor hand rails so the sound was recorded from above. John was, according to an interview with Jimmy Page using a new kit. In the same interview he said Johns' technique and sound was down to his wrists and tuning. He also said the drums were an acoustic instrument.

John Bonham, knew his music he was a Connoisseur, big bands from different airs from early 1900s 1920s 30s and 40s and 50s he incorporated all kinds of sounds from his taste of music. For example he took an intro from little Richard keep a knocking and use it for the intro of rock ‘n’ roll. Young drummers should take his approach and broaden their library of music.

Happy to have Zep back on the channel. Zeppelin brought me to your channel years ago, and your Bonham breakdowns are fantastic. Great reaction, as always. Edit: a cover? Yes, please.
There's not a single Led Zeppelin song that isn't better as a live version. Studio masters too, for sure, but as with all great bands, they truly shine their brightest live.

Anybody can have decent chops. Practice your rudiments and you're good.... What Bonzo had was the feel, the sense to give the song exactly what it needed and nothing more. A great drummer knows his/her role in the music. Take Ringo for example. He is the first to admit he has basically no technical skill, yet his parts are legendary because he could feel the music and the vibe from the others in the band and gave just what the songs needed, and nothing more. If you're a drummer in a band where the singer is telling you what to play, find another band. Or start your own :)
Thank you Andrew for the reaction and Ed for the request. So spooky, I did a search for a drumming reaction on this exact song recently and Voila! this just appeared 😲 I do love a good Bonzo fill (ⁿᵃᵘᵍʰᵗʸ ᵍᶦᵍᵍˡᵉ) and that one just before the Outro is a real fav. That was a good point about Plant's vocals and the hair metal. LZ get a lot of flack from haters who say they copied a lot, but credit must also be given for what they created and influenced, too.
I've always considered the quality of Bonzo's work in this song with When the Levee Breaks. It's "almost" the same groove sped up with the same sound. Just less pedaling the bass. It may have been recorded in same location. The lobby of Headley Grange? Either way Bonzo always amazes us years after he passed. Great reaction Andrew. Well done.
It's never been one of my favourite Zeppelin songs, but I listened to it differently here. I like it, of course, I don't dislike any Zeppelin songs 😅 Bonzo is really showing how groovy he can be playing straight forward. Noticing the dynamics on the hi-hat, the kick, and the snare-like a groovy machine made of wood and oiled with thick motor oil. So good! And his laid back slow fills are genius! I really love how he can move the song with his super dynamic eighth notes or whatever they are in each song. Sometimes using it to build up the tempo and the tension.
Thanks Andrew for doing my paypal pick!... VERY surprised that you havent gotten suggestions for Misty Mountain Hop before... a quintessential Bonzo track for sure!!!... Well done :)
The hi-hat. That occasional hard accent is closing the hi-hat with a stick on it (stick and foot down together, so the 1/8 rest with the right hand). Listen to this album for just the hi-hat. Not one single *pss, pss with the hi-hat at all, but a clinic on every other technique.
If you ever have the time and means, treat yourself to listening to all of these Zeppelin albums on vinyl. Even if the album has some light scratches, the sound will still change your life! Hahaha!
I used your Drumeo 30 days free trial from a previous video of yours and I love it! 🤩 Besides Drumeo you get to access both Singeo, Guitareo and Pianote! Quite cool if you happen to enjoy those instruments as well 👍😊 So Thanks Rooney, and also thanks for entertaining and cozy content on your channel along with the bad memes 😂👏
This song is from the "Untitled" 4th album. I don't know if it was considered a "hit" back in the day but it is definitely beloved. To my ear, the vocal cadence and music pattern reminds me of a siren; it sounds arresting, alerting, edgy, and potentially dangerous. Everything in their efforts were second to none, whether it's in musicality, production, structure, vocals, skill - you name it. I would agree with you that a lot of more casual fans, I guess, may not notice the musical acrobatics Zep was capable of both vocally and instrumentally because everything sounded so easy and the flow was immaculate.
The 4 runes on the albums cover caused most to call it the ZOSO album. This album got a decent amount of airplay - I remember hearing this song on the air.
@@terrylandess6072 yes, much to the chagrin of Jimmy at the time since the symbol isn't a word. He's never discussed its meaning, although a lot of people believe it may be the alchemical symbol for Saturn, which rules Jimmy's sun sign of Capricorn.
@@henriettaskolnick4445 Yeah at 65 I have a harder time finding much new about these groups I grew up with which we would scour for any information we could. The internet helped years ago but not much new has been said since.
@@terrylandess6072 I'm 56 and yes, sometimes it can be a challenge but I find interesting tidbits occasionally. For example, there's a guitar up for auction that had been owned by both Jimmy and Bonzo. Jimmy lost it to Bonzo in a game of Spoof, some type of drinking game. Bonzo was a partner in a construction company and he gave it to his construction partner. That partner just recently put it up for sale. What a thought to watch them play pub games together. No, this isn't musical trivia but I delight in learning whatever there is. 😊
Bonham could be a machine, but only when the music demanded it. And even then he threw in so many inspired fills. One great track I don't think you've reacted to is Achilles Last Stand. The studio version is excellent, but the live versions show how exciting he was on stage.
Great vid. Always loved this song for its funky like beat. I hope you get around to The Wanton Song and Bonzo's best foot work of any tune from the Physical Graffiti album. Hard for a double bass let alone a single and Bonham absolutely can do anything with one foot others TRY to do with two. The Wanton Song would be a great vid. Cheers!
Hi Andrew, i'm brand new to your channel, i just subscribed now. Great job and reactions to Bonham. I've been listening to Zeppelin since 1973. I have a question tho. Why are drummers like Keith Moon, Carl Palmer and Jethro Tull and Alan White and Bill Bruford of Yes such great but so complex and complicated to figure out how they play like the masters they are. Listening to all of their 70's albums i can't figure out how they did what they accomplished. I'm just blown away by the talent coming from John Bonham and the other 5 i just mentioned.
É SIMPLESMENTE O MAIOR E MELHOR DE TODOS. O REI DO GROOVE, SÓ PORRADÃO D MELHOR QUALIDADE, O ARRASA BUMBOS DE TODOS OS TEMPOS. TB, PRA ACOMPANHAR A MAIOR BANDA DO MUNDO TINHA QUE SER O MAIOR BATERA TB.
You Sir are an invaluable resource to the many aspiring drummers out here/there/everywhere! Wish I had you as me drum teacher when I was tiny bloke! Also, Spot On mate about this song not being all that popular. Bonham's Bone Crushing beat, & fills - to me - are the highlights of this unusual track! Pretty sure Misty Mountain Hop is on side B! Lastly, some of Plant's vocals can be quite irritating because of that Nyah, Nyah, NyahNyahNyah! Childish playground mocking melody. Cheers!
Is it the green sparkle kit? Got to be Ludwig though as we know. They had his kit from this album at the Rock Hall which I spent some time with when I was there. You're saying to yourself how can he not know the color then? Well, at this point I'm 63 and I was there in 2004. But the sheer simplicity of the kit, especially compared to Neil Peart's massive multi piece set also there, is pretty cool. Compare and contrast the great ones.
Bonham was personally kinda outta control in his last several years of life, but he was studious, subtle, and had incredible tone, with tremendous swing as well as preserving strength and speed.
"Let's hop to it" - I see what you did there . . . . :) 3 piece groups have the freedom to take turns with breaks and fills more than any other combination. If the musicians are good - they can play the 'same' part over and over and never play it the same twice.
Hi from the uk I'm no musician but it seems clear to me that the way Bonham played it wasn't just time keeping for the band he was out front along with Page and Plant. Bonham didn't do subtle max or don't bother. For me the opening of when the levee breaks is the best Have fun
Everybody tried to emulate Plant, Bonham and Page. See: Richie Blackmore, Billy Squier, Rush, Kingdom Come, all those lead singers in the 80s..., .... Rock of this typed died in '80 w Bonzo's death
Another great video , please do in my time of dying , the rover if you haven’t . Dying there’s a live from earls court 1975 which is great the remastered. or the rover is studio . Thanks mate
I don't think it's a stretch to say that Zep, particularly Page and Plant, would be influenced by the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson is widely recognized as a genius innovative arranger and producer. Page was already a seasoned studio vet when he formed Led Zeppelin, and Plant was a student of all American pop, rock, blues, soul, etc.
~7:05 [...] Well, I'm a fan of Led zep, The Beach Boys, The Who, Elvis, Pink Floyd, NoFX, Beastie Boys, The Kinks, Beethoven, Deep Purple, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Elton John, Gran Master Flash, Miles Davis, Paco de Lucia, Ella Fitzerald, can't list them all anyway... You don't like music if you just listen to one band/style. Educated people can appreciate many styles, without making a war between them.

Bonzo is really showing how groovy he can be playing straight forward.
When Jimmy discovered Bonzo, he *knew* he had found a diamond in the rough. He couldn't get him into his new bad fast enough.
Check out some Clive Bunker from Jethro Tull.
Would love that, To Cry You a Song off of Benefit. Killa!
Gotta mention the influence of the Delta blues!
The hi-hat. That occasional hard accent is closing the hi-hat with a stick on it (stick and foot down together, so the 1/8 rest with the right hand). Listen to this album for just the hi-hat. Not one single *pss, pss with the hi-hat at all, but a clinic on every other technique.
I would love to watch you react to Nandi Bushnell drumming Caravan. She makes me smile!
Oh that sounds good! Thanks Kim
If you ever have the time and means, treat yourself to listening to all of these Zeppelin albums on vinyl. Even if the album has some light scratches, the sound will still change your life! Hahaha!
I hear ya!
Led Zeppelin, "Fool in the Rain," Bonzo at his most articulate.
11:22 to 11:28 has always been my favorite part of the song!!😁😁😁
Now you've subbed you can find out the answers!
We're doing deep dives on all of them!
Mate, you have a lot to learn if you don’t know the cover of Zeppelin IV. You have quite the journey ahead of you
Yup I knew I'd get roasted for that Robert! yikes
Cheers!
Thank you! 🙏
If you get a chance... set aside 82 minutes of the day and check out their 6th album - Physical Graffiti.
IMHO, a drumming masterpiece.
Thanks!
🙌
Bonham was personally kinda outta control in his last several years of life, but he was studious, subtle, and had incredible tone, with tremendous swing as well as preserving strength and speed.
"Let's hop to it" - I see what you did there . . . . :) 3 piece groups have the freedom to take turns with breaks and fills more than any other combination. If the musicians are good - they can play the 'same' part over and over and never play it the same twice.
Haha! Yes Terry
Andrew... just for the record you were listening to the "no name"Led Zeppelin 4 album 🙂
I would like to see you do LED Zeppelin I the Evening live at Knebworth
Hi from the uk
I'm no musician but it seems clear to me that the way Bonham played it wasn't just time keeping for the band he was out front along with Page and Plant. Bonham didn't do subtle max or don't bother.
For me the opening of when the levee breaks is the best
Have fun
Everybody tried to emulate Plant, Bonham and Page. See: Richie Blackmore, Billy Squier, Rush, Kingdom Come, all those lead singers in the 80s..., ....
Rock of this typed died in '80 w Bonzo's death
Besides the best guitarist, Jimmy was the best producer for the head
Yup Jimmy is a genius
Another great video , please do in my time of dying , the rover if you haven’t . Dying there’s a live from earls court 1975 which is great the remastered. or the rover is studio . Thanks mate
did you ever listen to "T.N.U.C. " by grand funk railroad? it's a very good drum solo.
I don't think it's a stretch to say that Zep, particularly Page and Plant, would be influenced by the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson is widely recognized as a genius innovative arranger and producer. Page was already a seasoned studio vet when he formed Led Zeppelin, and Plant was a student of all American pop, rock, blues, soul, etc.
you should do the band "FREE" !!
Mr. Rooney, love your channel. Please do a reaction to Joe Walsh "At the Station" from But Seriously Folks Joe Vitale kills it.
15:14 lot of drummers just quit their teachers! 🤣
Just keepin' it real!
Hair Metal !!! What happened to Poodle Rock!! LOL
Sometimes feel bad for you folks who missed out on the 70s. Golden age of music.
Some great stuff there Paul. Even the pop is classy
@@AndrewRooneyDrums indeed. Great review by the way, I loved it! Also love seeing you get into the rhythm of the music that helped to define my pre teenage years 🙂
Great!
Beach boys = wrecking crew
Exactly. The beach boys didn't play any instruments on the biggest album.
Lord, wait until he gets to D'yer Maker.
That is the 4th album.
