This song is Robert's growing sarcastic cynicism with the LA cocaine/drug scene and the rock scene in general. You can hear the weariness in his voice. He said it was a dig at someone he knew and cared about and how she was getting deeper and deeper into drugs. It's in the lyrics; "And she said, 'Don't you want it, don't you want cocaine, cocaine, cocaine?'" and later in the song when he sings "On the balance of a crystal, paying through your nose." you can hear a loud snorting sound. As I said, this is a very intense album where the cracks of dissatisfaction and disillusionment are really showing through.
Spot on. Of course. 😘👋. And more than a little pissed off with Jimmy and his drug use, and the crunch of the contractual deadline they were under. Robert was not in a good place by then for allot reasons. I think the beginning of his emotional distancing from Zeppelin as an “affair of the heart” as he put it years later.
Also, there is something intensely real about their exhausted feel that emanates from this song. In other words, they're so emotionally spent from their own personal trials yet they manage to knock this out and raise their musicianship to another level. Immense respect!
Hello ladies, hope this finds you both well. It’s always interesting to read your comments. I always walk away the wiser for finding these gems. Each of you should have a channel, or perhaps one together. 👈 Regards
@@antarcticorb9197 Indeed! Jimmy said when talking about the stress they were under at the time "That's why Presence was a testament, like two fingers up to all the things that destroy other bands."
@@ronaldelliott4373 Ron! Happy to see you! I'm always happy to hear that someone finds something of interest in the ramblings of a rather Zep-obsessed fan, such as myself! 😂 I hope you're well.
The way John Paul Jones subtly alters the bass line after the solo is sublime. Perfect example of why they're the best Rhythm section in rock. They're just so laid back.
The ONLY time this song was ever performed live was in 2007 at the Celebration Day performance. They nailed it.
I was gonna say! I loved that and yes it was great!!
And Page plays all the whammy bar stuff on a Les Paul with a Bigsby! Never heard anyone dive bomb with a Bigsby! Even at like 70 with gray hair, Jimmy comes out cocky, and swinging hard on Celebration Day. So good.
Best song of that performance IMO....it's rocks!!
@@johnathanstruble1064 well, I pick Kashmir as my top one on the set list for that night…. But this one in top five for sure. I love the way Plant gives a little “gulp” when he’s introducing the song, saying that it’s the first time they’d played it live.
@@JohnWhite-xc3md well…he was 63….and pure white hair….but indeed he looked pretty rad. Especially at the beginning before he took off his coat and vest from the heat. 😁
This song is just one of several bangers on this album that often get overlooked when discussing Zeppelin.
This album actually rocks hard asf. It's not as experimental or fancy as the others and its not even my favorite album, but man it's a banger. Glad you guys liking so far and can't wait for yall to hear the other songs
See how you guys pick out each members contribution so infacticly. That's the true sign of a GREAT BAND!
Where Achilles Last Stand may be the most epic track on the LP, this one and Nobody's Fault But Mine are my personal favs. The groove on this one is savage and dig Page's solo, as well🔥
Achilles gets the most praise from this album, and rightfully so, but For Your Life is just as good. That bass groove is just so thick and delicious, maybe even sensual if that makes any sense...
Aren't you guys glad you decided to keep going? I know I am! Love this track!! Is there such a thing as "Progressive Funk Rock"?
Glad you did'nt skip this album?👍👍
This song Crush Crush Crushes! Killer bass/drums, smoking guitar riffs, deep ass vocals.
Cool fact
Jimmy page recorded all the guitar solos in one gawd damned night for the entire album.
Keep that in mind listening to the rest of this album.
JPJ is such an unreal musician. Always on point without fail. This song - like so many Zep songs - is the deepest groove. This is considered to be a deep cut and it has like a dozen unique and creative hooks. Those guys were just absolute masters.
It’s so staccato
The live version during the Celebration Day concert is fantastic.
The only time it was played live
It is great. Have watched it repeatedly. Love Jimmy's elastic whammy bar effect in both versions.
Jason repped it well
Yes I agree
The farther down the rabbit hole you go, the more you realize what geniuses these guys are. The more you listen, the more you understand.
Maybe the award winner for most overlooked Zep song.
Not by us smart guys.....🙃🙃
one of the best songs on this record, with tea for one
@@dsk333 Yeah absolutely. Restrained song but the longing in Robert's voice and the many perfect notes by Page. Very special song to me!
it was the last fantastic sound i discovered from them
My favorite song of this band.
The Presence album contains many truly great Zep classics, underrated, without question. And yet, somehow to me seems jut missing something. And I don’t know why it is or even what it is. And I don’t want it to be this way. At all. Yet, it is.
Could have or maybe should have been the 3rd disc on physical graffiti. Gotta love that snarl eh?😊
LOVE this song. Plant’s push-pull with Jimmy’s guitar. The whole shebang. You guys gave it the reaction it deserves. Thanks!
Underrated masterpiece.
Often overlooked album. This album rocks, swings and grooves with dare I say a touch of Jazz?Bohnam is the foundation holding it all together as usual. JPJ the secret sauce on top of the foundation. Page & Plant with the texture. Just Led Zeppelin it.
“Tea for One” is like “Since I’ve been Loving You” part 2 without the angst.
Love Tea for One. Just pure sadness, longing and loneliness.
Presence is right behind Physical Graffiti in my favorites list. Each song is unique, perfectly structured and performed. Great use of space. Next song, Royal Orleans, uses it nicely as well. Page's use of the whammy bar in the rhythm and lead creates great tension and energy. Also note that the bend and stretch of Page's guitar is echoed in Plant's vocals. These songs are evidence of the continued growth and mastery of the band in their playing and song writing. The four masters strike again, hard.
Excellently stated
Yeah definitely a tight groove. JPJ & Bonzo are in lockstep. Very few musicians today tackle this correctly **I saw Angeline Saris & Jeff Campatelli jamming at a show with friends do this quite well** but I saw Zep back in the day in Oakland and they were quite special
TRULY the greatest rhythm section in rock history.
It's one of the most underrated Zep tunes. I always wondered why this didn't get the airplay like most of the other tunes. It has all the elements of a hit. Great song!
you wonder, really ? It's not good, thats why
Gregcrowe, I respectfully disagree with you. “Not good”, really? Not great, I can kind of understand. But not good? I side with these two brothers. They really know music. But again I respect your comment.
You nailed it !!!!!
In fact, Presence ,the complete album..is underrated....stop..period...
Kudos for reacting to this song! For me it's one of their most heavy hitting, funk groove, in the pocket songs. And Page started using a Stratocaster on this album with the whammy bar for those deep dives. Bonham and JPJ - best rhythm section in rock music ever.
So looking forward to...
Nobody's Fault But Mine
...and
Candy Store Rock!!
"That's top-level bass playing, right there."
"And Bonham was right there with him."
'Nuff said. Yet another great reaction, gentlemen. Other music reaction channels pale in comparison. Your channel rules.
Pick a song any song from LED Zeppelin. Love them ❤
You guys are having the same reaction that we did back in 76 or '77 when this album first came out. The first song is Achilles last stand and from there through the rest of the record you knew it was just next level led Zeppelin! The whole album.! Y'all have a great day! Peace!
This has become one of my favorites from Zeppelin!
Love the synchronized head bobbing to one of Zeppelin’s best songs from one of their best albums. You’ll enjoy the rest of Presence. It really is different from their other albums.
Just when you think it can't get any better it does. Still a lot of great songs to come
They all put on a clinic, This album has Page's most emotional studio solos IMO.
You’ll notice this album has no keys, strings or acoustic guitars. Their most straightforward album. This is Jimmy Pages album, while the following album In Through the Out Door has keys on every song. That is JPJs album, with almost all the songs written by him.
Hanging it out over the edge, and snapping it with a time warp back beat. Mozart, Led Zeppelin, equivalent, but completely different. Basically, genius.
One of my favorite Zeppelin tunes!
Just wanted to thank you for being the first to react to one of LZ's hidden gems, it's always been one of my favorites.
This is a cool song, unappreciated by most, glad you liked it!
thats was cool aboit Zepp all that variety
Enjoy, 'Presence' is my favourite Led Zep Album.
That's a Crispy Creme Donut right there.
Right out of the oven.
So warm, sweet and creamy.
Such an underrated tune.
Love this song. Boom.
I think one of ZEPS best songs. Enjoy how much you guys respect this material. Thanks and take care.
I'm glad you're continuing with LZ, since I'm hearing songs like this that I've never heard before!! Love this song, it's so different.
JPJ and Bonzo are steady but in my personal opinion this song is carried by Pagey's guitar playing and the layers of guitars he added during his mixing of the album...as a matter of fact this entire album showcases Jimmy's prowess on the guitar and this is definitely a guitar album
Page doesn't get nearly enough credit from these guys.
@@henryb160 i know which i try to mention but they seem to love the other 3 chaps but forget who writes the music and created the band
This was one of my favorites. Always keeping you guessing. This album was so underrated. My sis and I wore this record out.✌️🎸🎶🎼
The way that Page makes that guitar sound like he’s detuning it is just something next level. They actually performed this for the first time for their O2 reunion show.
It's a whammy bar
It’s indeed a whammy (I think he plays a Strat on this tune) but what’s cool is the way he pans it from speaker to speaker (kind of like the descending slide riff in Whole Lotta Love). That’s a typical Page production move
Those long notes are so beautiful.
In my top 5 Zeppelin songs....that's saying alot.🔥🔥
What a staccato heavy groove
Keep going guys! The rest of this one then "In Through The Out Door". A lot more original stuff to check out...
I commented on your Physical Graffiti end song that Presence was killer, glad to see you witness why. Apex Zep here gentlemen.
Thank you for being so eclectic with your musical tastes. If you could please check out a very underrated guitarist Rory Gallagher. Would love you guys react to Philby. Live or just audio he is considered to be one of the greats in Blues Rock and has a very soulful voice.
Thank you so much!! We will start with the studio version and then do the live.
This is one of their most under appreciated tracks. That bass line is hard hitting.
Presence is a killer album!
And you guys thought of not listening to the whole album. Chirping away like brothers with a bowl of ice cream. I would play that song 3-4 times in a row, that's right walk over pick the needle and move it back 4 times 😊
This and Driven to tears in the same day???!!!! Shit is happening on this channel. Love it!
JPJ and Page are the ones who play together more closely in this tune rather than JPJ and Bonham. The only time there is any change in JPJ and Page playing together is when there is a different rhythm during the Page solo. This is just my opinion though
Love this album!
You guys do a great job. Feel like im in high school again.
Here's the link to the live performance at O2 arena in 2007. As mentioned below, only time played live. ruclips.net/video/zuXUhOQzprA/видео.html Thanks for the reaction!
The band is sensational on this track. We can always find solo stand outs for different sections ect ... But let me just say that Jimmy Page is a mad genius in the very best sense of the phrase. The band was forming huge cracks, he was basically a full fledged addict! Robert recorded the vocals sitting in a wheel chair recovering from a serious auto accident that nearly killed his wife, and they were under pressure to finish this record. Page basically wrote all this music by himself and brought it to the band, and of course they fleshed it out into a master piece as usual, but Jimmy's overall efforts here are almost unimaginable to pull this off! You may find a better song writer, a more technical guitar player, a cleaner soloist live, but you will never see the total package that was Jimmy Page ever again.
Just such a cool, complex, groove….. I remember listening to it countless times…specifically or as an accompaniment with friends as we hung out and partied!
This is the first time i have heard this song!!!! Surprisingly. I had y'all on just regular play on my laptop speakers. HUGE mistake. You were talking about a killer bass line by JPJ, (BTW- my favorite member of Led Zeppelin, He is a MUSICAL GENIUS!!!) So, I put my headphones on and was BLOWN AWAY.... The regular speakers of the laptop do not pick up the BASS. JPJ is Killing it on this track. Congrats, great reaction. Another classic by Led that is going in the rotation of my playlist.
Thank you.
Since this is your first time ever hearing this song, I *have* to recommend at least one serious listen to the entire "Presence" album-- ideally, in one sitting, first track to last. "Presence" is not one of the most popular Zeppelin albums, but it has some of Page's and Bonham's greatest playing, and JPJ is on fire throughout the album too. "Nobody's Fault But Mine" is thunderous, and "Tea for One" is a great, haunting, slow blues song that is one of the lesser-known gems in the Zep catalogue.
I read somewhere that they recorded the whole album in like two weeks or three weeks.
Guys, DO the Celebration Day version. 👈
Probably Zeppelin's heaviest album, and the only one without any acoustic guitars.
Good stuff !!
Everyone sleeps on this album, but it's always been a favourite of mine.
I just now found Them Crooked Vultures. John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl and Josh Homme. They made one album, but it was GOOD!
Love this one Robert's in some deep funky mellow groove with the singing the band acting up as usual and my beloved JPJ rocking that bass
Jimmy and Bonz getting back to the rock😮
I forget how great this song is, your reaction reminds me, thank you
Zep showin' off their funk! I wore that song out after the first listen. Glad you guys played it and glad your fans requested it.
No clunkers on this album. One great song after another!
im lukewarm on candy store rock.... that and whole lotta love may be my two bottom ones in their catalogue
Love that you guys are listening to Presence. A very underrated hidden gem. Love what your doing. If you get a chance you have to react to Song Remains The Same you will not be sorry keep up the great work.
That is a SLEAZY groove!! Gritty/grungy jam!
so should we do this album? lol luv u guys!!!
I knew you guys would appreciate this album.
Genius's, no doubt! No one else sounds like them!!!!
Thank you for all your Zep reviews, I really look forward to them.
You guys should have watched Achilles Last Stand live from Knebworth!
All right bros! My fav song off Presence. Said she was my only with my lemon in her hand, indeed! This song cooks! Three for three again today! Were for sure on the same page!
GENIUS
This is on celebration day from the 02 center in two thousand and seven
You will be very glad that you kept going through this album so underrated
All four hitting on 12 cylinders. This album is so reminiscent of earlier albums, but different if you know what I mean. Heavy and bluesy, just nasty in the best way. 🔥
Multiple separate grooves on this song.
I love how u guys get it!!! You will never anything like it again!❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
yep agree 👍
How about all those whammy bends from Jimmy? Good Lord!!
2007 live reunion concert version is my favorite. Would be blocked, but worth your time to check out.
Love it! They always come up with something new!
Such a different sound. Love it.
I told you it was funky. They find grooves I didn’t know were capable. I think they did this song live at the 02 concert in 2007, and that’s the only time.
Correct.
Just another average Led Zeppelin song, far superior to most other band's best songs
The funny thing is I have no idea what Robert Plant is talking about but it doesn't even matter haha the song is that good.
Love how you are rediscovering the brilliance of the grooves. I'm so used to them i kinda forget how amazing the groove is
As a 16 year old bass player who cut his teeth on JPJ and The Lemon Song...and thinking that was as good as it gets... album after album I soon realized that #JohnPaulJonesIsTheGOAT in my book ... Great reaction guys...thumbs up and shared.... gt
Ned from Spain stopping by La n Che. Yeah, when you hear this song the first time the pattern of the groove takes a minute to digest. Bonzos command of time and ability to keep them locked in is amazing. JPJ's bass lines are in no way standard issue. One of our favorite git solos by Mr Page and Plant goes with the flow. There's also little details like Page altering the chord voicing and the second guitar echoing the main riff at minute 6:49. More bangers on the way fellas.
When they played the final show with Jason sitting in for his Dad, this song was a request Jason insisted on. They had never played it live.
