The song is specifically about the viking invasion of the British Isles from 794 Ad, the land of the midnight sun / ice and snow / where the hot springs flow ( volcanic springs) are all references to scandinavia. The singer Robert Plant is very interested in early British history so you get references to it in various songs also Brit. literature in others- these are 4 intelligent men who are master musicians so you get excellent songs on a wide variety of subjects. They also sparkle with humour - they had just done concerts in Iceland and had a very nice time so they wrote this song for fun. The outstanding guitar playing is Jimmy Page who is the founding member and the producer. The drummer is John Bonham widely regarded as the greatest rock drummer and the base / keyboard player is John Paul Jones. They are also strongly influenced by the early american blues men and dounmatched blues rock, but they do folk /acoustic rock, they get very funky and then their are songs which are uniquley them , you will need to discover stairway to heaven hopefully the live version at Madison square garden from 1973 . ON the subject of young people becoming old , they did a reunion concert in London in 2005 called celebtation day when they were in their 60's you should try Kashmir from that, age is no limit when you are this talented. 20 million people wanted tickets for that concert. Jimmy Page is 80 now and is still the coolest man on the planet. You are going to be very pleasantly suprised- by everything they did.

You could argue that Zeppelin had the greatest four musicians ever brought together in a band. No voice like Plant, no guitarist like Jimmy (greatest riffs EVER), no one hit the drums harder than Bonzo; and because Jimmy would flow, John Paul had to keep the musical flow going. Just an amazing band.

John Bonham's drumming is even better on the opening track of their debut album. "Good times bad times" has a base drum thundering out in 4/4 time with triplets pressed in for emphasis. Unlike now, he is doing this with one foot using only one pedal. Fools in the rain is polyrhythmic - He plays the high hat in 4/4 time with swing triplets, intermitting ghost notes with the snare in a 12/8 time. At the SAME time, he plays a half time swing shuffle on the base and snare. Four appendages and two different time signatures at the same time. He keeps this all together despite the bass guitar and 6 string guitar playing a 12/8 signature. Giving this song a syncopated triplet feel. kind of a Latin swing, Perdie shuffle feel.

Imagine, if you will, being used to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly and other groups like them, thinking you'd heard the best Rock could offer, and a friend invites you over to listen to a new album he'd just gotten. So you go to his dorm room (in College), you smoke a little very weak 1960s weed, and he puts on Led Zeppelin (I), track 1 - "Good Times, Bad Times", and when then that first track hits you like you'd just been run over by a locomotive. It was obvious from the first couple measures that Led Zeppelin was something extraordinary.
So, I suggest listening to that album, starting with track 1: ruclips.net/video/G1rJohGD9LA/видео.html
It's a short song compared to many, so you might want to do a double response. There are so many great songs on this album, it's hard to pick one:
    0:00 Good Times Bad Times
2:47 Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
    9:29 You Shook Me
    15:57 Dazed and Confused
22:23 Your Time Is Gonna Come
    26:58 Black Mountain Side
    29:10 Communication Breakdown
    31:39 I Can't Quit You Baby
    36:21 How Many More Times
It would be interesting to see if anyone can name a bad or even a mediocre song by LZ. Thing is, they're all so different.

Led Zeppelin are masters of musical diversity. And while they helped pave the way for heavy rock/metal, most bands following them couldn't achieve the beautiful synthesis of electric/acoustic, the heavy lead and the lighter than air zeppelin that these guys were capable of.

I'm British but my background is a lot more complicated, I think a lot of us can say something similar. It's so hard to emigrate these days everyone is closing the door it feels like, that's why I love to travel, I'm an adventurer and don't feel tied to any one place. Wherever I am if I'm happy...that's home.
There are so many amazing, funky Led Zeppelin songs you'll love. (Slightly) less obvious ones for me are Houses of The Holy, The Ocean, and Fool In The Rain. I hope you check them out and take care!

I first saw Led Zeppelin as a young man in my early 20s in 1969 at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive music along with at least 200,000 other fans. Robert Plant was from my town in the West Midlands of England, along with many other famous bands and musicians of that era especially. It was a wonderful time for music lovers. Immigrant song was specifically about the Vikings, with their "threshing oars" From the "land of ice and snow" and the "midnight sun" emigrating around the Northern Hemisphere, also referring to the Hammer (of Thor).

Nice observations Rosalie, thank you. Yes, it's hard to imagine sometimes looking at old people like myself, and realize that they too once were young, and vital and full of energy and dynamism! And yes, the band, so brilliant, such good musicians and writers. The intense rhythm's in this song with it's kind of staccato feel - they were I think trying to capture the feel of the theme and lyrics of the song, which was about the Vikings - primal, raw, a bit primitive, but very powerful.
That's one of the wonderful things about this band, they could do gentle folk music, they could do hard-as-nails rock, they could do soulful blues, whatever direction they wanted to go, they could go, and do it all so incredibly, incredibly well!
Talking about soulful blues, here's an example to consider, "Since I've been loving you (live) - "
    ruclips.net/video/4gT63xovuWE/видео.html
Jimmy Page starts out "shredding' on guitar, but then quickly goes into what seems to me to be some very tasteful blues playing (see what you think), and continues to put on a blues playing showcase for the rest of the song. And Robert Plant gives quite a showcase on the vocal too IMO.
Anyway, really enjoyed your reaction and comments, thank you!

I grew up in South Florida. Pompano Beach and Palm Beach Gardens. My wife and I moved up to Milwaukee, Wisconsin two years ago. There are so many people from all over the world here. It is awesome! I work with a lot of individuals whom came from South America, Central America and Mexico. To hear their stories of how they came over here, and why they came here is quite heart-wrenching. Much love and respect to these brave and courageous people! A lot of them lived in Florida and Texas at first. They left to come to Wisconsin because of jobs, quality of life and not being in fear of being harassed by local government. They all say Florida and Texas are terrible when you're an immigrant. We left Florida because it's become an overcrowded hell hole, and DeSantis is ruining it.

One of the three cornerstones to modern hard rock, metal and progressive rock/metal. The trifactor that laid the ground was Led Zeppelin with the psychedelic influence on moderna progressive rock and metal, Deep Purple to the melodic driving hard rock and Black Sabbath for the riff-based metal of today. All three from the UK and started in 1968/69.
The drummer, John Bonham, was one of the best of his time and hard hitting. We lost him in 1980. His son Jason Bonham plays drums and did a fabulous job on the ONLY full Led Zeppelin reunion concert (one-off) in 2007 (London). At the Kennedy Honors the Wilson sisters (Ann and Nancy) from Heart, payd tribute to Led Zeppelin performing an EPIC version of the classic "Stairway To Heaven". On that occasion, Robert Plant (the singer) invited Jason Bonham to sit with them to receive the award for his father, but he had to deny as he had "other plans to matter". The fact was that he surprised them by playing the drums on that song with the Wilson sisters.
That performance is a MUST to react to. ruclips.net/video/2cZ_EFAmj08/видео.html

Led Zeppelin was Hard Rock, but certainly not metal, they actually hated that term. Believe me, if Zeppelin was metal, I wouldn’t have loved them for 50 years. Metal is like nails scraping a chalkboard.

    •  6 месяцев назад

@@sicotshit7068 I never said that they were metal, I just said that they were one of the foundations that made modern day metal. For your information metal is more than nail scraping in my opinion, as there is more than 25 subgenres.
