This is a real galloping rhythmic track and it's relentless. Jonesy's playing an eight string Hagstrom bass, Jimmy's ripping on his Les Paul on multiple tracks on the song and Bonzo is beating the drums like they said something bad about his mom.
The syncopation with Bonzo/Jonesy against Jimmy guitar playing and soloing is lights out.
Robert recorded this whole album in a wheelchair. The studio was a darkish, dank dreary basement studio in Munich, Germany, in the winter of 1975.
Robert had gotten into a car accident in early Aug of 1975 and they canceled a short but huge stadium only tour, which was to start in late Aug of 1975.
In Plant's really bad car accident, he shattered his ankle in multiple places and was told he might not walk properly again. His wife, Maureen, had a massive skull fracture and almost died. Their two children were shaken up as well. This happened on the Greek island of Rhodes, so the medical attention wasn't the greatest.
They had to be airlifted off the island for proper medical care.
The band Heart snagged the drum, bass and guitar from this song for their song "Barricuda" a year later.
The black object throughout the album artwork is called an obelisk. There was an odd presence around the band, but everything was still connected.
This album has some tension in the music for sure.
They played this song at every show for their 1977 US tour all the way through to the end, except on June 26th and their very last show ever, in Berlin, West Germany, July 7th, 1980 on their tour of Europe.
Thrre is a fantastic raucous pro shot live video officially released in 2003 and it was from Aug 4th, 1979 at the Knebworth Festival played in front of 220,000 people. It's killer!

I don't know what it is exactly...but when Zeppelin drifts into the realm or genre of "fantasy" is when I think they sound most like themselves. Its almost as if drawing upon our most classic literary traditions helps to make them more timeless. Hearing some Zeppelin material is like hearing tales of yore from the clan elders. Sometimes it comes across as camp...Sometimes its a masterpiece...I think this one is in the latter category.

I've only once, taken a date straight home. I had bought this 8-track during the day (must have been a Friday, payday) and listened to it in the car immediately. That night I, and a girl I had been on a few dates with, who was very pretty, drove to the backwoods road where everyone our age parked. I was excited for her to hear it and waited until we were there, and stopped. It was Summer, probably June, fireflies were lighting the darkness outside the car. I put this in and I was transported in time and space to somewhere else. But then, towards the last few minutes, the volume was turned off and I came out of my space and quickly turned to her, my date., who's fingers were on the round knob (not that knob) She said, "Gawd, this is awful. When will it end?" Slowly, I turned the ignition on, put the car in gear, turned around, took off, and turned the volume up to it's highest. I drove to her front door and barely glanced at her. I guess that I'm fortunate in only having to do that once in my lifetime. 🙂

Wikipedia says : The album was written and recorded in the last months of 1975, during a difficult time in the band's history. Singer Robert Plant was recuperating from serious injuries he had sustained earlier that year in a car accident; this led to tours being cancelled and the band booking studio time to record Presence instead. The entire album was completed in a few weeks, with guitarist and producer Jimmy Page putting in several long shifts to complete recording and mixing. The title came from the strong presence the group felt as they worked together. The LP's artwork from Hipgnosis featured several photographs focused on a mysterious black object, called "The Object".

    • @Fred-gv3kh
      @Fred-gv3kh Год назад +1

@@kbrewski1Agreed. I don’t know, but I wonder whether that was solely due to his singing volume, or whether part of it was in the recording mix. It’s possible that due to Plant’s car accident, and being in a wheelchair, they made a conscious choice to feature the instruments on this song, maybe Plant wasn’t feeling great that day due to pain. Hard to say.
If I remember right this whole album was recorded in about three weeks, they were under pressure due to contract, but Plant really needed to be resting. People have bad days, especially when they’re injured and haven’t had enough sleep, and who knows what painkillers/other drugs they had him on… or self-medicating, lol. Plus the psychological/emotional toll and trauma of what he and his family went through (in the accident).
I guess my point being, I’m just speculating, but many factors could explain his less powerful vocals in this song. Rock on!! 🙏🏻

Robert had badly damaged his ankle in the road accident and it wasn't clear for a while whether he would be able to walk on it again.

Many Zep fans consider this to be their best song. Hard for me to pick a single track but it's definitely up there.
I'm really enjoying your reactions to the music that has been the soundtrack to my life and times 🤘💯

@@edwardcoit9748 My vote would be "Purple Haze" on the original north American release of Are You Experienced? I was still a wee laddie in Scotland when my cousin introduced me to the album. That version started with "Foxy Lady" and hit me like a tonne of bricks 🧱

This is my favorite Zep tune and IMO the fullest display of their collective power. This is some of Jimmy's most modal playing and Bonham playing with a more "up" feel vs the usual behind the beat. The "ascending" part of the song comes out of their live jams on Dazed and Confused. the "San Francisco" jam. Check it out at 5:45ish ruclips.net/video/6DnGQHGLzYQ/видео.html

This track gets better every time I hear it....and I've been listening to it since it came out. One of Bonham's greatest drum tracks, which says a lot. The live version from Knebworth, 1979, is well worth a listen. TY.

It's amazing to hear the orchestration of guitars in this song and Page having to choose which part to play LIVE on stage. And this song was considered Bonham's most difficult drumming of all their songs.

The cover design firm Hipgnosis (who had done hundreds of covers by this time, for bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Wings, 10cc - and if fact did the cover for "Houses Of the Holy") did this cover as a whole concept, where they just used the title Presence as a jumping off point for all the pictures on the sleeve (front, back, inner gatefold). The idea was that there was this mysterious object that people were obsessed with and worshiped, and it was in all these old pictures of people gathering around to look at it and stroke it, but it was somehow able to erase itself from memories when you weren't looking at the pictures. Hipgnosis made the object specifically for the front cover shoot, but most of the photos were actually old pics from the 40s and 50s, so the object was just manually dropped into them.

Well, not ONLY Zeppelin (Rush, 2112, to cite just one other example), but, yeah, it may have hurt them a bit commercially, not having a standard "hit" (which they really didn't, anyhow, and certainly never aspired to, God love 'em), but bully for them, and then to CLOSE it with ANOTHER ten minute+ tune, the magesterial slow bloozy AF "Tea For One," well, bookending genius, that!

Plant sang this song and the entire Presence album from a wheelchair resulting from the serious car accident both he and his wife had in '75 while on vacation in Greece. He also had surgery to remove vocal chord nodules around '74 and sounded noticeably different afterwards..
