Growing up in LA and growing up with you two is a blessing. The Lakers were in our living room almost every night of the week. You guys are like family.

James Worthy is my favorite showtime laker. had a serious massive run. Critical piece to the franchise. Straight up legend
First off, love these guys and loved trying to emulate their every move on a BB floor waaay back in high school. My entire high school basketball team idolized these guys so much that we were the Lakers for a day. During homecoming week the school had "dress-up" days, superhero day, nerd day, etc. Obviously on nerd day the whole team dressed up as the Celtics, then on superhero day, the Lakers. Keep in mind this is rural Idaho in 1987 and there was not a single person of color in the entire school. We made our own jerseys and went full black face except for the one guy on the team with glasses who was of course Kurt Rambis. Obviously we realize how wrong the blackface was now but at the time we thought nothing of it and just wanted to emulate our idols. Again, love these guys and the rest of showtime Lakers, what a great time to be a kid watching the reinvention of an entire sport.

I still to this day can't watch that 84 finals against the Celtics. We had it and let it slip away. Great interview.
Worst thing about that loss, besides being to those Ugly Green uniforms, was that should have been a sweet sweep. But...that damn leprechaun. I hate him. So much.
Two of my basketball heroes. B, thank you for these interviews. I grew up in the SFV. I could only listen to the home games on KLAC with Chickey Baby. Away games on KCal 9.
I still remember the home games on CBS with Brent Musberger, Hubie Brown and Dick Stockton. My whole world stopped on Sundays watching you guys play at the Garden.

I have not watched a full Laker game since Worthy retired. Even when Kobe and Shaq were together. My greatest NBA memories as a child were all the great battles against the Celtics. Cried every time they lost in the Finals, but I NEVER wavered until Showtime’s light were turned off. Cheers to Coach B and great lead off guest with Big Game James! Showtime Laker fan for life! 🤙🏽

From 1985-1989 James was untouchable
Just finished watching the first episode, and I just became a subscriber. As a Knick fan, it's good to hear basketball stories of the 80s and 90s.

The Showtime Lakers are one of the greatest teams in the whole NBA history. The Showtime Lakers had more Hall Fame materials than the Bulls dynasty. The Showtime Laker team had so many Hall of Fame materials, great players all, from their superstars to the bench, deep, very very very deep and talented team.
True in that the Bulls and the Pistons didn't have multiple Hall Of Famers as the Celtics and Lakers so the Pistons had to win their titles with grit, grind and physicality.
The single best team of all time was the '87 Lakers. Beautiful team basketball played at the highest level.

Can't wait to see who plays Big Game in Winning Time. He was my first recognizable NBA player (cause of the glasses and I wore them too) and my favorite player. I STILL compare the position to this guy. Back when the NBA was on CBS. Salute, great episode!
Great interview! Love to hear all of the insider stories from long ago players. I’ve been watching basketball for fifty years and was a Lakers fan from then until now (but also a Bulls fan since I live in Chicago). I feel so fortunate as a fan to have seen entire careers of so many HOF Lakers players, including and especially West, Chamberlain, Kareem, Magic, Worthy, and the amazing Kobe Bryant!

Imo as lifelong Lakers fans at age 50, I still look back & think that if we don't let the CELTICS off the hook in 1984, that worthy was walking away the mvp of that series! 84 was worthys BREAK out season in which his star was born!

Worthy 36pts, 16rebs, 10assts, in game 7 vs the pistons 1988 NBA finals!
James played a whale of a game but the Pistons had them beat if not for that BS foul on laimbeer against Kareem, the Pistons would have had 3 Chips in a roll.
Also as good a game as Worthy had, don't forget Isiah dropping 25 in the 3rd quarter on a one leg. One of the best Finals performances I ever witnessed and Zeke never gets credit for that game or his career.
The best PG all time was Magic and close to him in 2nd was Isiah Thomas and the man barely stood 5'11" and could take over games on both ends of the court and there was nothing you could do about it.
Still makes me mad even today that they left Zeke off the Dream Ream because as good as Stockton was and he had a hall of fame career in his own right, he was not Isiah.
Stockton couldn't get 25 11 and 6 and take over the game while doing it but Isiah could and did. Isiah only averaged 19 for his career but he could have averaged more but he was a pass first PG.
@@phade2blaq I'll tell you what sir Michael Alexander Zeke has my respect well well before they played the Lakers in the finals! In my opinion ISAIAH Thomas was the best, most dominant, complete best small(6'ft & under) PLAYER EVER! NOT EVEN DISPUTABLE TO ME! I KNOW STOCKTON IS THE ALL TIME ASSISTS & STEALS LEADER, BUT ISAIAH THOMAS WAS ONE IF NOT THE ONLY "PURE" POINT GUARD THAT WAS AN ELITE SCORER AS WELL(see Isaiah scoring 16pts in a minute in the 1984 nba 1st round playoff series to tie the game up & force overtime vs bernard king and the Knicks after being down 16!)

Just catching this video 2 1/2 yrs later. Awesome video and Big Game James is always on point. One thing though, Jamaal was not traded at all, he ended up being put on waivers in '85 after beating the Ugly Green uniforms earlier that summer. It was Norm Nixon that was traded to the Flippers (capital F as a sign of respect) to bring Byron "Sweet Pea" Scott to our Purple and Gold universe. Subscribed and will now be always looking forward to new episodes.

I'm with B Scott in regards to Kareem! Based on Kareem's body of work he would indeed be the all time greatest player and he still was averaging 23 a game at age 38 so let that marinate and as James said he went through decades of multiple all time great centers and more than held his own but Kareem gets a lot flack for saying fans in Milwaukee were racist and for his activism and for changing his name.

What set Worthy apart was his lightening quick first step. Once he made his move, he was by you and at the hoop dunking.

I Been stick'n up 4 Big game James on YT 4ever now, lol. THE fastest 1st step on a player anywhere near his size...imho. I couldn't get over how , not only his speed , but the moves He came up with only a few feet to the hoop...wow. My fav is him rt side block , spin move with rt arm hold'n ball way out & then a quick shift to the left & off the glass...Ya...scary dood to face up against.

Yeah people need to do their do diligence and research full games of players regular season, and at minimum just playoff games in full with any player in or out the discussion that's a great with James Worthy and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (listen people: he shoots the mid-range not just the sky hook at 7'2 and can shoot the 3-pointer like Byron Scott said as well as James Worthy respect all decades by watching full games not one or two but enough before you judge.

Maurice Lucas was a real "Enforcer"
In those PFs did the dirty work, being physical rebounding, defending on the block and being the guy who took up for teammates and fight if it came down to it and Luke was one of the best at doing that for sure. When the Pistons played physical, they got called dirty and cheap shot artists. R.I.P. Luke!
I didn't get the point how James Worthy at 6'9 changed the size equation at small forward position. I mean Larry Bird was 6'9 if not bigger and he was the face of the league..

In the 1970s and 1980s NBA, physical play and hard fouls were a thing but when the Bad Boys came along, all of a sudden it was turned into something criminal and thuggish.
The Bad Boys knew as a team they were not as talented as the Lakers and Celts so they figured if they could get under the skin of the other teams stars, that was an advantage for them even if meant one of the Bad Boys got ejected because Laimbeer, Mahorn, and Rodman were not scorers so the more havoc they could cause the other teams stars the better their chances of winning becams.

1986 KAREEM at 39 years old KAREEM AVERAGED 23.5PPG / KAREEM SCORED 46PTS VS HOUSTON IN THE REGULAR SEASON VS SAMPSON AND OLAJUWON [YOUNG TWIN TOWERS]
Johnny, if I remember, Kareem also put up another 40+ game that year against Houston! Can't remember if it was in Houston or the Forum. Cap always played well against them!
@@edkiely2712 yes sir Ed kiely I believe KAREEM actually AVERAGED like 41ppg that season against the ROCKETS(twin towers) unfortunately they reversed the results on us, in the western conference finals that year(1-4) very impressive recall by you sir, were blessed to be the age where we've seen alot, but have the ability to actually pull something directly from our memory recount vs going to GOOGLE for HISTORICAL events and or information 🧠🤔🧐

Grew up in California until my parents moved to Salt Lake City in March of 1980, obviously, just after Magic was drafted. Had Jazz season tickets for years; the fans at the old Salt Palace didn't like me to well! The '88 series was something I'll never forget going to!
So many great, great memories Johnny! Love revisiting some games on YT every now and then. The reunion the Lakers had in August was something special! I was filled was so much nostalgia and longing! Lakers meant so much to me growing up! Almost like a family in a way! Sometimes wonder where it all went, but I'll always be grateful for the journey I had rooting for those teams. Special kind of magic!
