This channel gives me mixed feelings. On one hand I really want it to do extremely well because he definitely deserves it. On the other hand I don’t want anyone to watch it but me 😂
this is my favorite jiu jitsu channel. really didactic. it is fascinating how jonthomas do a compilation of all defenses and offenses and all possibilities of one especific position.
This is why getting very good at swiveling from left to right hip while playing open guard and changing your foot position and grips is so important. Sitting on the left or right hip only is a good way to get your guard passed. HQ is a lot harder for OP to obtain when you are good at hipping out and changing your foot positions in relation to OP's body. HQ is hard to achieve for the OP if as soon as he tucks the leg between his legs you have already hipped out...and stretched your leg out and attempting to push on his knee to off balance him. Most of his leverage is when your own knee is bent and he has been able to sit down on it. That goes away when you have hipped out and extended your leg. Again, important to be able to swivel from left to right hip and change your own foot positions quicky on his body.
These recent deep-dive videos on mount, retention, push-pull and now this are top-tier. I use them for my own training and direct students/lower belts to them.
I just started jiu jitsu a month ago but I try to apply alot of your tips during my rolls few select have worked for me ): maybe its because im still a beginner lol just gotta keep grinding!!! Thank you for these videos much love from South Korea (:
I'm a black belt and this knowledge is great, but it can take some application knowledge (a.k.a. mat time) to accurately apply these concepts. Keep this channel in your learning journey, it will pay off in the long run. Love his concepts!❤
No questions! Just want to say I binge your material. I’m still a no strip white belt but have been very quickly starting to hold my own with blue and some purple belts, even getting a couple taps on em, and your material has helped!
Very good, i'm a white belt and very often i get in this position, but most part of times i fail in conclude the passing. This was so so helpful to me, thank you
Love it! I've been using HQ passing for years now, but it's the little details that make all the difference. Thank you for all of your work, Jon, sincerely.
Happy to hear it it’s really all the little small details that makes a big difference in positions so I’m happy to see that people can see the value in those details
Learning the reverse head quarters was such a a ha moment. being feather weight has its challenges, and you sir have shown me answers. Thanks Jon, looking forward to your next visit to society!
For the past two years I have worked the HQ position like you showed initially and always had issues with the pummel. Instantly switched my grips to same side lapel and outside pant (palm down) and WOW !! Three training sessions in and already seeing my passing from HQ improving so much.
So happy to see that fast of improvement the grip change is so different. That constant lasso is so annoying this makes it such a more forceable position
This Chanel is 🔥 , I hope you’re raking in the dough from these videos because a lot of people would pay to see online BJJ content like this. Well done!
I'm always hunting for this position when passing, but I find when I get to it, people always manage to get grips and off-balance me to either side, backwards or forwards and start attacking my legs. This video is going to help so much when I get back on the mats... Thanks so much!
I used to rely either on Gordan Ryan's toreando + leg drag and long step bass or Faria's over-underpass, but my partner's been countering it recently. So now I started to get into HQ position. Thank you this is helpful.
@@JonThomasBJJ Oh DUDE! I don't believe you actually answered lol! I been referencing your past guard pass videos including your toreando pass, but whenever I tried to pass from kneeling position, I just somehow naturally get into HQ position. All your videos have been super helpful and I try to study them deeper man. Thank you!
I end up in the HQ position all the time and often have a hard time dealing with opponent’s legs. I’m gonna give these details a try. Solid content as usual, thanks bud! 🦾🔥😎
Super video!! 🥋👍🏼I really appreciate all of the editing, I know it’s a lot of work to do, the technique details laced with actual competition footage and seeing the details in real time is really cool! This is a great channel, I’ve learned a ton from all of your work-Cheers!!!
Hi! Alway thank you for the great instructional. It helps my move a lot! One thing I want to ask you (nothing to do with this video's techniue) is.... Do you know how Matrix guard got it's name? I've been searching it all day but there's none which give me a clear explanation. It would be very kind of you if you tell me the origin of its name in case you know it! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Planned on going into the gym today to work on this and the instructor is showing everybody variations of it. I was like hell yeah this is just what I wanted to do.
Such gold content on this channel. This HQ system is what I often attempt but have always thought why it gets stuffed and what other options could I go with. Thank you.
Yeah the other way can work but then you have to deal with lasso a lot which is a whole other problem. This forces them to stay in position so you can keep the same system going
Odd request but can you do a video on how to approach entering different types of guards? I know it’s a big/wide ask but it would be so helpful to have a guideline of how to enter different guards
Love this video and am excited to start playing with this position. How do you go about entering into this passing position say if you had a seated or supine opponent and neither of you had grips?
Watching the game management of high-level players, finishing from the back mount seems to be the best method. Are there any videos that contain this method?,, The method of catching the back of an opponent recovering while taking side mount during a guard pass.
Finishing for the back is definitely one of the most powerful finishing methods in jujitsu but you have to be opportunistic. It depends on how you’re part of the fans if they stay on their back on the floor defending, then you need to finish and mount or side of course if they turtle you can progress the back so I would say you need all options.
Best way I’ve found is to watch one section and stop. Drill that for a while and test it with resistance. When it sticks add the next part. If I go in and try to drill multiple options I generally don’t get any of it to stick. I’ll even go so micro as to get to headquarters and get the outside pants grip. That will be my “win” for the roll and I try to do it over and over
Double sleeve on my website is a lot more complete than the BjJ fanatics one, I would recommend double sleeve as I’m going to revamp an entire new retention one with espen together soon!
I don’t like to think of it as long step, as whether or not the long step is available will largely be subject to the grips they have on you. Long step is one possible option here but knee cut folder are my preferences
Good question! No not if you drop your elbow low to block that space off, I should have mentioned that in the video. But the outside knee grip block lasso over and if you drop your elbow the lasso under
When they are seated you usually need to threaten a pass while they are up or force them to back, I’ll try to cover it again soon I did a video on it 8 months ago or so
