Dan Fogelberg’s music was huge part of my life soundtrack… from the ‘70s on. He played more than a dozen instruments and wrote most of his own songs. And his sound was very eclectic… tender, sweet melodies, beautifully soaring instrumentals, story songs, and rockers like this one. I can listen to him all day long… ❤️❤️❤️

When I was teaching myself to play guitar in the 70's, this was one of the many albums that kept me inspired. But I used to listen to this album over and over, laying on my bed at 14. One of the songs that really got me was There's A Place In The World For A Gambler and I would just marvel at it over and over. Eight years later I was living in L.A. and it came up one day that my then-girlfriend had been one of the chorus of background singers on that song. That still kind of blows my mind when I think about it! Of course, I can automatically pick her voice out in the chorus. Cheers!

I remember NBC's broadcast of the Winter Olympics from Lillehammer Norway (1994). The frequency played "There's..... Gambler" while showing scenic views of the mountainous region. Kinda cool at the time to hear.

@Denton Florian That sounds familiar. It would be great if there were a copy of that clip floating around. It may be as difficult to find as a clip from The American Music Awards show that featured a guitar duet between George Benson and Glen Campbell. Glen absolutely destroyed it...so much so that George literally stopped playing and just stood there watching with his mouth hanging open. I once read an interview with Carlos Santana and he mentioned that same performance. He too was blown away by Campbell's prowess on the guitar that evening

Wow…I couldn’t believe it when I read the title. This is a “deep dive” into one of the most
influential musicians in my life. This man’s repertoire is huge so I would suggest
“The Power Of Gold” when he was part of a duo with Tim Weisberg. The LP is titled
Twin Sons Of Different Mothers. I’ll sound like a fanboy If I talk about him so I won’t!
I was devastated when I head of his passing. I love the man.

Lots of folks think Dan Fogleberg was mainly a 'Soft Rock' artist with songs like "Auld Lang Syne" and "Leader Of The Band", but he could rock out as well. This song is a good example, but an even better one is "Phoenix", and its prelude "Tullamore Dew". IMHO it's every bit as good as his big hits are.

As far as I'm concerned, Dan Fogelberg can do no wrong. His lyrics are poetic, gorgeous and deep. I love his voice. I wish he was still with us, making his amazing music. He had a number of bit hits (this isn't one of them, as it's more of an album cut). But as you know, sometimes the BEST stuff is on the albums, and not necessarily on the radio.

  • @dentonflorian7405
    @dentonflorian7405 Год назад +17

Easily my favorite musician. This song is about a high school / college crush he had who was always on again off again with him until she finally dumped him. (I'd say he kind of let it out here!)
Fogelberg sold out Carnegie Hall with a solo show when he was 27 --just him with a guitar and a piano. How many can do that? His wife recently released a recording of that show. He is famous for his love songs and ballads but the well is deep and you have to check this guy out. Maybe start with his "Greatest Hits" and go from there.
Lots of artists find one thing that works for them and then make the same record 12 times. Fogelberg intentionally didn't do that. He played it all and played it all WELL -Rock & Roll, Country & Western, Jazz, Blues, Bossa Nova, Bluegrass and even some world music & African sounding stuff.
    Hit Parade Hall of Fame
Red Rocks Performers Hall of Fame
    Colorado Music Hall of Fame
And there's a petition going around to get him in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Martin Guitars even honored Dan with a D-41 Dan Fogelberg Signature Edition Martin guitar.

He sold over 15 million albums: 1 Triple Platinum, 4 Double Platinum, 3 Platinum, and 2 Gold RIAA Certified Albums. He had 11 Billboard Top 100 Albums, 3 Billboard Top 200 Albums, 1 Billboard Top 50 Country Album, 4 Billboard #1 Singles, 17 Billboard Hot 100 Singles, 13 Billboard Top 20 Adult Contemporary Singles, 4 Billboard Top 50 Mainstream Rock Singles, and 3 Billboard Top 100 Country Singles. Unbelievable and still so underrated.
BTW, he played the solos on this song with his '58 Gretsch White Penguin, one of the rarest guitars in the world and what he said was "the jewel of my collection." Only about two dozen were ever made and only something like 10 survive. Pink Floyd's David Gilmore sold his for $447,000.
Seriously, you have to check this guy out.

Denton Florian, Thank you for your post. Fogelberg is routinely (criminally) overlooked. I believe that's partly because his chart hits don't really represent the scope and depth of his catalog. Do you know where that video of the Carnegie Hall performance can be viewed? Also, where do I sign that petition?

The original Eagles lineup played here in Springfield, Illinois (December 16,1973). The tour was to promote their second album Desperado. They hadn't yet become the megastars that would soon follow. They had singer/songwriter Maria Muldaur scheduled to open for them but she had to cancel. At the last minute the concert promoter was able to book Dan Fogelberg, who was a Central Illinois native (Pekin, Illinois). Dan was a very popular regional troubadour. I believe that this concert was when Dan first meet the Eagles and thru his association with Irving Azoff the rest is music history. When the album Souvenirs was released I initially couldn't figure out why all the songs sounded so familiar. He had played most of the album at this show on acoustic piano and guitar.
