The Living Years should be next. It's very emotive with the theme of family and the importance of showing and sharing love with family members while they are with us. It will bring a lump to your throat if not a tear to your eye. The official video is not distracting but reflects or exemplifies the message of the song. And the music is beautiful of course.

I believe that the longevity of Genesis can be attributed to the work Mike, Tony and Phil did outside of Genesis. It allowed them their individual creativity, so when they came together, they could focus on making a Genesis album. After Steve’s departure, they returned to stating all songs were written by Genesis, with no individual credit, as they all contributed together. Who knows what might have happened if they’d done that before Peter left? Enjoyed this reaction. Thanks.

My radio station sponsored their concert when they toured. We all ate dinner backstage before the show. Mike is as quiet as a mouse. Singer Paul kinda looks like Phil Collins as well as singing in that same range. He's been the lead man on some great records. As others will no doubt suggest, Michaels first album has an amazing 20 minute piece called Smallscreep Day which ranks very high on the Genesis solo projects list. It will bring tears to your eyes.

Great vocals from one of my favorite vocalists being Paul Carrack who was in the band Ace, also appeared on Squeeze's "East Side Story" ('Tempted'), and has toured in Eric Clapton's Band!!!!!!
Mike Rutherford gathered together an INCREDIBLE Band here featuring Carrack and Paul Young on vocals, Adrian Lee on keyboards, and Peter Van Hooke on drums & percussion!!!! Check out the rest of this album and especially the next one from 1988 "Living Years"!!!! You won't be disappointed!!!

*I actually didn't pay much attention to the lyrics in the song initially. As the song played I was enjoying verses/chorus & the singer.*
*I was floored when I heard the guitar solo. A solo like this in a "hit song?" My first thought was that's either Allan Holdsworth or Brad Gillis. The guitarist was (as you found out) Alan Murphy....sadly he died about 4 years after Silent running was released.*
*I couldn't help notice the Jean-Luc Ponty album Enigmatic Ocean. One of my faves.*

Correct me if I’m wrong: When you listened to this you weren’t aware that Mike is nobody else than Mike Rutherford, founding member of Genesis. The Mechanics became Mike’s side project after two solo albums.
Now here’s what you MUST do: Listen to the entire first solo album Mike recorded. It’s called Smallcreep’s Day, a concept album based on a book of the same title; you find it on RUclips, and I guarantee it’ll blow you away! Highly appreciated by fans and critics, some called it the best Genesis album that Genesis never did. Mike was kind of shocked by this, therefore his 2nd solo album Acting Very Strange was very different.

The song had no connection to the movie Silent Running (other than the title) which was released 10 years before the song. The name extension (On Dangerous Ground) was given when the song was chosen to appear in the 1986 movie On Dangerous Ground, which was titled Choke Canyon in the United States. Rutherford said the story was about a person that went into the future and saw the break down of society and tried sending a message back to his family to warn them.

Hi Guys, catching up a couple of days late! Mike Rutherford and his Mechanics have just begun a tour of the UK, moving onto Europe this summer. He was interviewed on the BBC Breakfast TV show a couple of weeks ago, looking good for 72 years of age, and said how excited he was to be doing another Mechanics tour now that Genesis is over as a live band. The tour is called 'Refuelled', all the hits of M&TM plus bits of Genesis. It's a different line-up now, the only musicians I recognised were Andrew Roachford on vocals and Gary Wallis on drums. Their first 4 albums were great, although judging from the comments I must be one of the few who wasn't mad on 'The Living Years', a little too sentimental for my taste, but I guess that's just me. More Mechanics definitely xx

i am certain someone else has probably noted this ( i am too lazy to go through them all), but "Mike" is Mike Rutherford, long-time bassist for Genesis. He also plays guitar on this album, with assistance from Alan Murphy, although the cover notes do not say on which song. ( he is in "fine print") Sorry Nick; no Allan. The two vocalists are Paul Carrack and Paul Young. Paul Young had a huge hit with the song "Everytime You Go Away" i cannot say with certainty they are one in the same, but it seems logical. i find it hard to believe you would play this song and not also the next song on the album, "All I Need is a Miracle". The album concludes with "Taken In" also a recommendation and "A Call to Arms" is a decent power ballad.

As usual Greybeard proves to have excellent taste. Mike Rutherford always was a prime contributor to Genesis songwriting and he proves himself marvelously on his solo album and the Mike and the Mechanics albums. He never stands in the limelight, although I would argue that he deserves to. As others have requested, I also highly recommend "The Living Years." Be prepared for some tears, it's a highly emotional song. But then, what is music but emotion put to sound?

That whole album is amazing. "All I need is a miracle" was the big hit on that, along with "Taken In"

Paul Carrack, the lead singer, had a hit with Ace in the mid-Seventies, "How Long". Wonderful song. I reckon it was the best thing he ever did! (much better than this 80's tosh LOL!)

Paul Carrack is a great add to this line up. His tracks with Squeeze and Ace were iconic 80s. You guys need to do “Tempted”.

This album is a hidden treasure. Besides "Slient Running" , "All I need is a miracle" was their other hit off this album, but the whole album is good, especially Taken In, A Call to Arms, and Par Avion (which I believe was used on an episode of Miami Vice).

In the beginning I liked this song, but then radio played it to death ... so I turned towards the solo stuff of singer Paul Carrack, albums #2 and 3 are great

    React to this please.
Archie Roach was an Aboriginal singer/songwriter who recently died. Archie was born in 1956 and was part of the Stolen Generation where Aboriginal children were removed form their family and place in childrens homes where they suffered abuse or adopted to white families. This was the government policy of the time. Archie's song "Took the Children Away" which tells the story of the stolen generation and his own experiences . In 1990, Australia's Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission's awarded the song its first Human Rights Award for songwriting.

Oh yeah, you've gotta go down the hole, and it's deep. They put out alot good tunes. And plus with the 2 vocalist both were amazing. The guitar player? It's Mike man. Peace

I loved this CD so much back then. Not as much love for this song now, as when it was so fresh (and maybe I overplayed it) but I like hearing the lyrics again. Someone should cover this song and maybe I'll fall in love again with an update. I can't use my headphones and I am trying to respect my neighbor by the thin wall, by keeping volume low. Surely that kind of ruined my experience.

A side project for Mike Rutherford while with Genesis. Mike has never gotten many props as an accomplished guitarist, even with Genesis. Paul Carrack has a golden voice (Ace, Squeeze, solo) for the ages, and is no slouch on the keys as well. Here it is live: ruclips.net/video/DCUmmvWHS2Q/видео.html
