I know it gets a lot of radio play during the holidays, but Same Old Lang Syne is such a great one! I think we all have someone from our past that we wonder about, and remember fondly.
Dan"s father was the leader of an actual band, the kind with all the string and horn instruments. This was his tribute to him and thankfulness for influencing Dan to pursue music as a career.
Dan had a wonderful way with words. A beautiful voice and was a great multi-instrumental musician. One of my favorites who doesn't get the recognition he deserves.
I spent my high school years loving Dan Fogelberg and listening to his albums. I haven't listened to this song in years, and it hit me in a whole NEW way this time: My father was a singer/musician and always had a band that played in the local communities (this was back c.WWII thru the 1950s)... He passed away when I was two years old, so I missed out on getting to see him perform, but I still have his handmade violin. This song made me think about my oldest brother, though: (MUCH older brother, there was over 20 years difference in our ages!) ...My brother "followed in our dad's footsteps" and was a singer/musician too... and it just never occurred to me before, what their relationship might've been like. (My brother also passed away a few years ago.) ...So here I am, all weepy over this song!
Dan Fogelberg is one of my favorite singer/songwriters along with Seger. Dan had so many hits and great songs in the mid seventies through the eighties and beyond. Regarding Leader of the Band. Dan says his Father was able to see the success of this song before he died. He said this song helped bring him and his Dad even closer. Dan said that when passed there was nothing left unsaid between him. I feel the same way about my Dad. We had a great relationship and when he passed 5 years ago there was nothing left unsaid.
One of the all time great songs...I never get tired of hearing this song...Truly awesome....I played this song for my Dad when he was very sick and Dad had these tears falling down and a big smile on his face as he hugged me...I will never forget that moment...My Dad loved this song...R.I.P. Dad...Thank you both for reacting...The memories came flowing back to me today.
Dan lived just 60 miles from my home. He was revered by many back home for his talent and sincerity. I was on my way to work when his death was announced. It hit me so hard, I had to pull off the side of the road to grieve. So many tears.
and to describe his father who was band director for Woodruff High School in Peoria, IL, Dan's hometown. Lawrence Fogelberg was also the music director for Bradley Basketball games for a while, and allowed Dan to "direct" the band when he was a kid....setting him on the road of music. Dan was able to play this song for his father before he passed, and has said if there were only one song he could ever write, this would be it.
I was lucky enough to see Dam Fogelberg in concert twice. One concert was with his band and the other was an all acoustic tour......just him and his piano and an acoustic guitar. Amazing story teller with a beautiful voice and lovely relatable lyrics.
Beautiful reaction guys! My Dad was an old WW II vet that kept all together for my older sisters and me. He passed a year after I joined the USAF and I had just met my wife of 37 years now. So this song always strikes a chord.
This song always gets me. reminds me of my Dad. He passed in 2008 RIP😔❤ "the leader of the band' being my family. His blood flows through my instrument(my body)...and my life HAS been a poor attempt to imitate the man. And I never did say I love you near enough. Anyway, love ya Pops. And BJ...she gave you a huge compliment at the end there...'aw Babe, you do a good job' . Good for you man.
A true classic and a true story teller. Another, classic from, Dan, is, "Auld Lang Syne". I could hear both songs a million times and guaranteed a million times tears will stream down my face.
This has been a personal favorite for years. Now, I'm 72; I've got a 30 year old daughter and a 27 year old son, with whom I'm very close. And it's ME that's tired and MY eyes that are growing old...and, fortunately,, my son loves this song.
Lost my dad 32 years ago and I still miss him every day. I used to play and sing this song on the piano and cry real tears while doing it. Dan Fogelberg is one of the most amazing vocal talents and songwriters of all time. Way too unappreciated. RIP Dan, and RIP Dad.
Fogelberg was always a favorite of mine. This song came out a couple of years before my father died. My Dad was not an easy man to live with, and we often butted heads, but he was my north star. Every time I hear the line in this song, "And, Papa, I don't think I said "I love you" near enough," I start crying. My Dad's been gone 40 years now, and the reaction is still just as intense. I write this comment with tears rolling down my cheeks.
It makes me think of my own dad, who passed years ago. Probably has that effect on many... I want to emulate the kind of man he was. Thanks for this reaction.
"Leader of the Band" was a tribute to his father on his father's death bed. Dan's music was my childhood. Now that I am 53, I understand and appreciate it even more.
Had forgotten this song but funny how when you hear a song you haven't heard in decades the words come back to ya. This ones a nice one . Thanks guys 👋hope all is good with you and yours🤜🧡🤛
Dan was born and raised, like I was, in Peoria, IL. His father, who this song is a tribute to, was a band teacher at several local high schools. My mother had Mr. Fogelberg for band. She always said he was a kind, patient but somewhat exacting teacher. We are justifiably proud of Dan!
Leader of the Band (nice tribute to his father), Same Old Lang Syne, and Rhythm of the Rain are my favorite Dan Fogelberg songs. First 2 mentioned are really good story telling songs.
One of the most talented artists from the early 1970’s through the 1990’s. Songs you may know are want to react to are Run For The Roses,( played on Tv during the Kentucky Derby), Longer, a huge hit, with many dozens of great tunes like As The Raven Flies, Old Tennessee, and Power of Gold!Dan was a brilliant songwriter and outstanding musician/ singer!
My beloved father-in-law taught high school band for 45 years. He was an accomplished trumpeter and played in a jazz band on weekends to supplement his teacher's income. When he passed away in 2017, the chapel couldn't hold all those who wished to pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations to VH1's Save the Music. (Many schools at the time concentrated the majority of their money to athletics instead of music and drama classes. Three of his four sons are musicians. I loved him as much as I loved my own father, and now both of my children play guitar and trumpet... a true living legacy.
Yes he did have!!! Fogelberg was, and always will be one of my favourite singer/songwriters of all time!!! As was said, he was taken much, much too soon from us!!! Still miss him immensely!
This song has always been special to me. As a young boy that wanted to be like his father and be a cook, I endured alot of sissy boy comments when I chose to take cooking in 4H instead of raising a steer or pig or sheep. Explaining to them that I was learning with 12 girls including the 5 Schumacher sisters and we ate all the food we cooked, they then became a little envious. What they didn't understand is that when I watched my father cook for others, family, friends, and customers alike, he was happy, when he could see that people enjoyed what he made he was content, he was successful, it wasn't the money or any position of authority, he enjoyed what he was doing and people really enjoyed his work, I still have friends from school that remind me about the cookies he would make and bring to our football games, he generally made extra just for the cheerleaders hoping maybe it would endear them to me. Miss you dad so much, RIP Marine, Semper Fidelis. Fyi, I have been cooking now for 30 years professionally, I may never be as good as dad but I understand how he felt, when you can please a person's pallet and see the satisfaction and or enjoyment that they are actually getting from the meal you have prepared it is very gratifying. Thanks for the trip down memory lane guys, really enjoyed it.
My wife and I saw Dan in concert. He was a performer who sounded as good as his studio recordings. What a great concert. This song makes me remember my Dad. Love it!
I lost my father in 85, abd everytime I hear this song it makes me think of him and shed tears to this very day. It such a beautiful song and it just touches my heart. Thank you reacting to this
Sitting here listening to this song which I have heard so many times but tonight it brought tears to my eyes thinking of my DAD! I love also watching you two here listening to these songs too! Dan Fogelberg was one special songwriter folks!
FINALLY!!!! A reaction video to a GREAT musician , songwriter and artist. Asia & BJ… You are now my favorite reaction people 😊😊😊❤ RIP Dan Fogelberg … gone way too soon😢
There are so many parallels I can draw between my dad, who I lost last year, and this song. I always think of him when I sing it. I will never be what he was.
Dan Folgerberg's music and writing is epic. We had his song "Longer than" played at our wedding. However, the organist totally messed it up. Wife is an organist and still gets angry about it to this day. LOL
He's one of my all-time favorite artists and this is one of his best. I hope you guys do more Gordon Lightfoot who just passed away too. Here's a Spotify playlist of all the songs I know I like from him 33 songs but only 32 are on Spotify. I'll link the RUclips one below it.
You get the nail right on the head that’s exactly what it’s about. It’s about his father, who is a leader of a college orchestra. A very gifted musician.
Home run analysis!!! His use of metaphor in lyrics is amazing. As a 70's teen his music always seemed to speak to me as it paralled times in my life as well as today. Wet eyes frequently. Hope you can.take a moment to enjoy, " To the Morning", dedication to, Dan Fogelberg video. I was moved watching you enjoy his work. You get it!!
Fogelberg is an unsung hero of song. So many gems. Heart Hotels is a masterpiece. Also, I love you guys so much - you've provided endless smiles for me during difficult times. Thank you for bringing joy to so many.
Every song Dan Fogelberg wrote or sung hits a different place in your heart. He’s been my fav since the 70’s….the soundtrack for my youth! Every album is a beautiful work….❤
I was introduced to Fogelberg in my teens, and he quickly became my go-to singer when I needed quiet. Got me through some bad times. From Netherlands to Run For The Rose's to Windows And Walls, it is all beautiful.
I loved his 'Souvenirs' album so much that I was thrilled to get tickets for his March '76 appearance in San Diego, then again in August '77 when he also featured Tim Weisberg ahead of the release of 'Twin Sons of Different Mothers' the next year. He had a kind of a "touched by an angel" effect on me.💜😇💙
Great song makes me think of my father even though he didn't have a musical bone is his body. Should review his song Old lang sine it inspired my first screenplay
A special song for all those who had a great relationship with their father. And also a special song for all those who are still working thru a sometimes problematic relationship with their father.
One of my favorite artists. Dan Fogelberg was such a great folk rock singer songwriter & storyteller. He also played multiple instruments such as guitar, bass, piano & mandolin. I had his double album "The Innocent Age" from 1981. "Leader Of The Band" is my favorite song by him, a loving tribute to his dad. He wrote so many great songs such as "Longer", "Hard To Say", "Missing You", "Make Love Stay", "Run For The Roses", "The Language Of Love", "Believe In Me", "Same Auld Lang Syne" etc. We lost him much too soon in 2007.
Jumped on the Dan Fogelberg wagon early being from Illinois where he was from. It's a deep deep hole to jump in. A great singer, musician and song writer. If your looking to listen to more Dan Fogelberg, an often overlooked song from his 1975 Captured Angel album "The Last Nail" is a GREAT song.
A beautiful tribute to a father.
There are song writers, and there are story tellers. Dan Fogelberg was special.
I know it gets a lot of radio play during the holidays, but Same Old Lang Syne is such a great one! I think we all have someone from our past that we wonder about, and remember fondly.
A bard.
Agree fully ... and yet I feel he never gets the credit he deserves in the legacy of singer songwriters. He may well have been the best of them all!
Dan"s father was the leader of an actual band, the kind with all the string and horn instruments. This was his tribute to him and thankfulness for influencing Dan to pursue music as a career.
I sent this song to my dad on father's day.
this song is about respect. period. we all human
I feel like he is talking about his dad. This song makes me shed tears every time.

I was at Balad, Iraq when I heard of Dan's passing. Worse day in my 20 plus years of military service.
I was born and raised in Illinois. We love and miss our native son. RIP Dan. We’ll never forget you.
It meant a lot to Dan that this song made his father in to a kind of celebrity which gave him some joy mear the rnd of his life.
Instant tears for me...I haven't heard it in years and I'm really glad you listened to it today.
"Thundering velvet hand" is such a great way to describe the discipline of a loving father.
So true! I’ve always have loved that line.
It was a reference to what they said about his dad and how he led his students with a “velvet hand”.

His dad was the local high school band teacher...and also community orchestra leader. The addition of those horns and orchestra was a nod to his dad.
I had him in heavy rotation in the late 70s/early 80s. "Rhythm of the Rain" is a MUST!
Hi guys, this song is beautiful in all ways, thank u ✌️🔥🎵

Love Dan Fogleburg. From my growing up time in the 70’s. Beautiful tribute to his Father. 😉
His "Run For the Roses" will bring a tear to anyone's eyes that love and appreciate horses, and even those that don't.

Asia & BJ, the only song I remember from him was "The Power of Gold" (with Tim Weisberg). Very good song, reached #24.
