@@vincentschmitt7597 Definitely a hit to the gut. He died of prostate cancer. He was touring and wasn't attentive to his medical needs. Unfortunately he found out too late. He could have been saved. To all men, get tested.
Great choice for your first Dan Fogelberg song. He wrote this to honor his father who was a music teacher and band leader in Illinois. This was a hit for Dan. We lost him way, way too soon to prostate cancer.
This might be one of Dan's second hundred hits. In his career, he quietly churned out a dozen or more hits per year for at least 2 dozen years. His style was never limited to a single genre, so he probably should be in multiple music halls of Fame.
Dan got his big break in music when he was discovered singing at a folk festival while he was a University of Illinois student by REO Speedwagon's manager who got him a job as a studio musician in Nashville, Tennessee.
I think for anyone who has lost their father the line "and Papa I don't think I said I love you near enough" hits you in the feels. This song always makes me tear up, but I love it. Dan had a unique voice and I really enjoyed his music.
I (hope) I have every song this amazing artist EVER recorded. Only two or three singer/songwriters have ever done this to me, but when I hear them perform, my heart seems to swell. The newest one to be added to the list is the amazing young Jazz singer, Angelina Jordan. It's like these particular artists...they don't just sing "to" you, they sing "into" you, and manage to stir up all those emotions you may of forgotten you ever had.
Lawd, I haven't heard this song in forever. It was on constant rotation on the adult contemporary station back in the day. Gotta react to "Same Ole Lang Syne" or "Longer" by him!
Anytime I think of this song I cry. I grew up in a musical family. My dad sang and played the guitar. He taught me to sing this song when I was just a little girl. Every time he pulled out his guitar, I would beg him to play it while I sang. It became our song. One day several years after he died (he died young) I was coming home from work late at night. I had a sudden longing for my dad and I started weeping as I drove. This song came on the radio. I had not sung it or even thought about it in years - and there it was randomly on the radio. I sang along and still remembered every word. It was a hug from my dad on the other side.
You need to listen to Dan Fogelberg same old Lang Syne it’s not a Christmas song but a great one to play around Christmas and this is a true story that really happened to him
Dan was a great story teller through all of his songs. "Same Auld Lang Syne" really happened and is always played at Christmas time. One of his first hits "Run for the Roses" he was commissioned by the Kentucky Derby to write a song for the upcoming Derby that year. While he lived in south western Colorado in the San Juan mountain's he owned horses. I had the pleasure to see him twice at Red Rocks. RIP Dan you are truly missed.
I absolutely love Dan Fogelberg. My personal favorite of his is "Longer". But another incredible song of his is "Same Old Lang Syne Song by Dan Fogelberg", plus many more. RIP Dan, you had an incredible impact on many of us!
This is one of Fogelberg's most personal songs. It's a tribute to his father, Lawrence Fogelberg, who was a band director. The senior Fogelberg began his musical journey directing high school bands in his home state of Illinois, first in Peoria and then at Pekin. He married Margaret Irvine, a talented singer who directed her sorority chorus, in 1946, and the couple had three children. Dan was the youngest, born in 1951. By this time, his dad was the band director at Bradley University in Peoria, where the family lived. The band would play concerts and perform at basketball and football games; Dan often told a story about his father letting him "conduct" the band when he was four years old, standing in front of his father with a baton while his dad did the job behind him. "It was an amazing feeling," Dan recounted. "It felt both very magical and powerful. And I was fearless." Fogelberg recorded this for his 1979 album Phoenix, but felt it was too sentimental for the album and didn't release it until 1981 on The Innocent Age. His father died the following year. When Fogelberg wrote this song, he didn't hear it as a hit, but the song expressed something that many children have trouble articulating: a love for their father. The intimacy of the song actually broadened its appeal, and it became one of his most enduring songs and one that fans would often mention to him as one they connected with. The line, "Thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go," is a reference to Fogelberg dropping out of college. He attended the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, but decided to leave in the middle of a semester to pursue music - not what most parents want to hear. Fogelberg's father was disappointed, but supported his son's decision, telling Dan to try it for a year. The music thing worked out well: Dan drove to Los Angeles, got a record deal, and became one of the top-selling solo artists of the '70s. The song concludes with part of a performance by the UCLA Band of the John Philip Sousa march "The Washington Post" arranged by Fogelberg's father. (Songfacts.com)
One of the greatest and most underrated singer-songwriters, in my opinion. Dan was absolutely amazing live too. If you're gathering suggestions for songs to react to for the holidays, I highly recommend "Same Old Lang Syne" based on a real experience that Dan had one holiday season.
I lost my dad on Nov. 11th and this song broke me. 😢I love Dan Fogelberg and you will not believe the beautiful music he left us with. Gone too soon. RIP Dan and daddy.
So recently. I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you're able to draw on those good, funny, and loving memories as you and your family navigate your way through the holidays.
Dan played this song, alone on stage with just his acoustic guitar, every time I saw him in concert. Every time he sang it, he said that if he'd only written one song in his life, this would be it. It always made me tear up & I wondered how he made it through the song. Absolute perfection.
Dan Fogleberg was my late wife's favorite musician/singer. Had a lot of great soft rock hits. Others to try, "Longer" "Run for the Roses" "Hard to Say" "Make Love Stay" "Heart Hotels" "Part of the Plan" and one for this time of year "Same Old Lang Syne"
Dan Fogelberg is one of my all time favorite singer/songwriters. I got to meet his Dad when I was in high school. He came and talked to our band. He was so kind and quiet when he talked. Had a majestic presence about him! There is a memorial garden in Peoria by the river for Dan. RIP
Hey sandy im from Peoria. I went to central. Is that where he came to speak? Also I didn’t know there’s a memorial down by the riverfront. Which looks amazing by the way. It changed since I was a kid growing up in Peoria.
Just ... wow. What an experience. That's fantastic. I spent two days crying when Dan died. Listened to every album I owned and everything I could find online. I don't do that for many artists. His death was just gutting for me.
@@leighsaldivar4439 Central , my wife went there too . Of course Dan went to Woodruff, which I was told by a group of friends that went to school with him 😁. Memories of Peoria and all the Fogelberg's fans are a part of my life . Needless to say the jukeboxes in Peoria bars had most of his songs and they played them quite a bit . It seemed that he had numerous women that knew him , met him or went to school with him . Good memories here .
Glad you finally got around to Dan Fogelberg, with all the soft rock you've been doing. He's right up there with Bread as one of the best in the genre. "Longer" is one of his most wistful, and you'll also love "Same Old Lang Syne", "Hard to Say", "Run For the Roses", and "Believe in Me".
Thanks for playing this song and I'm glad you like it! Dan snuck in one more nugget of appreciation for his father that wasn't mentioned in the lyrics; he added the orchestra music in the middle and at the end of the song. French horns and trumpets are not typically found in a primarily acoustic guitar song, but by including them he not only paid tribute to his father, but to his father's music too.
Interesting that you should say that. I never knew why those horns were in the song because they don't seem to fit into that acoustic box. However knowing that now it seems to make sense.
This song has always reminded me of my dad. Came on while I was getting ready for his funeral last year… I took it as a sign that he was ok. I even rewrote the chorus for him… “I am the living legacy of the Steel Mill Rigger man…” ❤
My brothers and I lost our Dad to brain cancer 18 years ago. This song hits so close to home for us, because our Dad was an iron worker by trade, but he was a brilliant writer. He just started gaining some success in writing when he became sick. It was so sudden and aggressive, that we did not have time to even plan for him to leave. He was our lighthouse guiding us home in the ravaging waters of life. Now I am a Father of three, and I do try my hardest to lead my children so that they may never be lost. I love Dan Fogelbergs music, he was truly gifted. Thanks!!!
U guys have become a staple in my every day life. You both will never know how much brighter you both make my darkest days. Reminds me of how pure and honesty still exist within humans, which whom can be a beast of a creature these days. Thank u!
You just spoke for many of us who thoroughly enjoy them and their reactions as well. It's a joy to see this young couple enjoying the music of my youth.
Amen. I love this whole family. They are so pure and wholesome and what a great example of a fantastic mother and father raising beautiful children. And provoking so many wonderful memories through the music, and now the movies, that we all grew up with. They are literally the first thing I do when I come home from work every night.
Overwhelming. If only all fathers could be worthy of such a loving tribute and all children capable of expressing it. It's a noble yet likely impossible goal to strive for.
This song is so beautiful and so perfectly produced. Even the horns don’t overwhelm, they are subdued to fit the rest of the song. The lyrics are so powerful and stand out because of the simplicity of the music.
I’m posting this comment with tears in my eyes, because this song has always had a very special meaning to me, as he describes my father as well. He served his country in WWII, came home and gave up his dreams of becoming a famous singer and took a steady job to support his family. He played a major part in my life in my love of music and with the work ethic he instilled in me. I read the lyrics of this song at his funeral because it meant so much to me. Thank you for including it in your song reviews.
The reason Dan Fogelberg was likely suggested so much this month is that he has a "Christmas" song called Same Old Lang Syne thats debated by some as to whether it's actually a Christmas song.
Whenever I hear this song I'm always struck by the notion that Dan Fogelberg, who achieved a good measure of musical success and fame, wanted to let the world know that his own success is to be credited to his father. Not every artist achieves fame and fortune for their work, but Dan Fogelberg had his head on straight and his heart in gear. May he and his band leader dad play heavenly tunes henceforth. Thanks and God bless you ♡♡
Dan Fogelberg was always a favorite of mine. I've been listening to this song for 40 years now, and every time I hear it I choke up when he sings, "Papa, I don't think I said, "I love you" near enough." While I always loved my father deeply, our relationship was often strained, and this line hits a little too close to home. Another great musician who died way too young.
I am so glad you finally reacted to Dan Fogelberg, he's one of the best but underrated singer-songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist out there.. This was one of his best songs... I do hope you react to more of his songs like "Same Old Lang Syne", "Longer", "Sutter's Mill", "Run for the Roses" and many more...❤️❤️❤️
I second Mychal's suggestion of Same Old Lang Syne. Perfect for this time of year, and a true story. Good guitar and lyrics describes every Fogelberg song. And his father did get to hear this become very popular before he passed.
This song makes me cry. A friend did this for a talent show. I think everyone in that audience fell in love with him. I got to watch his face light up when he got a standing ovation. My 14 year old heart just about exploded with happiness for him. He’s a musician now and teaches multiple instruments to kids.❤
Oh man, the feels! After decades of listening to this song, it never fails to evoke emotions. Dan's voice is stellar. If you want to catch another one before Christmas, listen to his "Same Auld Lang Syne" about running into an old girlfriend on Christmas Eve. It's a classic of his. I also love "Longer" (that one got a lot of radio play), "Heart Hotels," and "Hard to Say."
One of the greatest storytellers of his time. Two of my favourites are Same Auld Lang Syne, based on a true story of Dan's chance encounter with an old girlfriend (always brings a lump to my throat) and Longer, a great profession of forever love.
"Same Old Lang Syne." The only difficulty I have with that otherwise phenomenal song is emptying a six pack of beer and watching her drive away. Without worrying she was driving tipsy and might crash?
You two are such beautifully, bighearted people. When songs like this come up I feel like I just want to give you two a huge hug. 😍 Stay real guys! ♥️😎
This song has a special and deep meaning! A year ago I lost my Dad to cancer. He was a Marine during the Korean War, and was in for 4 years. He was an exceptional Christian man and we all grew up in the faith going to church every Sunday. My Dad had a great 2nd tenor voice, he led the choir and loved music! Mom played the piano. A lady from church contacted me about a month after his passing a d told me a moving story that brought many tears to my eyes!! (Referencing how he sculpted souls) Early next year I plan on getting the words of this song tattooed on my right chest in his honor. I'll probably cry the entire time. Now I'm retired Navy and have my share of tats and never teared up on any of them! Glad I was one of the many requestors of this song!! And thank you for your honest and heart-felt reaction!! Means so much!! Stay blessed!!
When this premiered as the theme song for the Kentucky Derby in 1980, I was nine years old. I watched the derby with my mom every year for as long as I can remember (she grew up in Kentucky). When this song came on in a beautiful montage of videos of horses in fields, I was instantly hooked. I still am drawn to this song, especially around derby time. Such great memories!
FINALLY!!! I've been requesting, no...BEGGING you for the last 5 months to react to Dan! Heck, I've left comments for you almost every week to play this. A few months ago I even sent you a detailed 3-point email of which 3 songs to listen to! THANK YOU! You should next react to 'Same Old Lang Syne'. He wrote this about a chance meeting with his old High School Love on Christmas Eve back in '75. Such a wonderfully talented man like Jim Croce, who was also taken from us too early.
This reminds me of my father so much. He was in the Army and served in Korea. I grew up on Army bases all over the world. He recently turned 91 years old and is fading. I enlisted when I turned 18. I am a living legacy, and I can never live up to the man he was.
There are several fantastic Dan Fogelberg songs you guys need to check out: Part of the Plan, Longer, Old Lang Syne, Run for the Roses just to touch on a few.
The orchestral part at the end (also heard earlier in the song) is taken from the composer John Philip Sousa, but was arranged by Dan's father, the 'leader of the band' himself, Lawrence Peter Fogelberg - who, over the course of his career, was a band director for two high schools and a university in Illinois.
My favorite Dan Fogelburg song. Another Auld Lang Syne is another great song. Thanks yall for reacting to Dan. He truly was a remarkabke singer songwriter,,and just listen to the intricate finger picking on that acoustic guitar.
Such a beautiful song written by Dan, for his father who was a music teacher. The harmonies are absolutely heavenly and the lyrics grab at your heart. To all who still have your Dads, cherish ever second, in a second it's gone and there is no going back. 😥😥😭😭💕💕 Musically a phenomenal song. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I think the reason Dan's name had been popping up in your requests a lot lately is because his song Same Old Lang Syne has a bit of a holiday season theme to it even though it's really not a holiday song (it's a song about two ex-lovers running into each other at a store several years later). Same Old Lang Syne is a great song, I hope you will react to it sooner or later.
"Same Old Lang Syne" would be probably my favorite Dan Fogelberg song if only he hadn't enabled her drinking from a beer six pack they emptied and then her driving away alone.
I lost my parents to a car accident back in 2004. This song was played at their funeral to honor my father Patrick's memory, my hero. The song "Let It Be" by The Beatles was played to honor the memory of my mother Mary, my best friend. I have a very hard time making it through either of those songs, even after 18 years. They were born on the same day, three years apart, and they died on the same day, my other at age 60 and my father at 57. Thank you for your reaction to this wonderful song, and for all that you are doing on this channel. You're absolutely right. Every day you wake up you are blessed. If you could do "Let It Be" sometime, that would be great. May your Path be the Light.
My dad passed away in my senior year in high school and this song came out in my early years of college. Such a beautiful and touching song I can relate to ❤️
A song that always make me feel good all over....I used to play this for my Dad whenever we would go out for a ride just hanging out...Miss you Dad...I played it for Dad when he was very sick and the tears were flowing.
Fogelberg has great lyrics and so many great songs: Auld Lang Syne; Longer; Netherlands; Make Love Stay; Power of Gold; Dancing Shoes; Seeing you again. Really many of his lyrics are poetic. Dan's love life took many turns, and through those turns, he wrote lots about love - when it's new and romantic and mourning its death. Edit ... I really like the song "Seeing you again" and apparently so did Fogelberg: "To me, one of my very best songs. Written after meeting my soon to be ex-wife in Hawaii to see if the marriage could be saved. It couldn't." (Dan Fogelberg)
Dan didn't record a song named "Auld Lang Syne." That song was "Same Old Lang Syne." Otherwise, good info and "The Power of Gold" was done with Tim Weisberg.
Has dad lived long enough to see the song become a huge hit. Dan said one of his proudest moments was his dad sitting in the concert listening to this song!
What a voice! We're getting very close to the time of year where you can hear his Same Old Lang Syne song a lot on the radio. It's my favorite Dan Fogelberg song. 💝
I could listen to this song over and over again. Which is what I used to do. One of the most beautiful songs ever written and sang. Father and son ❤❤❤❤
You will love "Longer" and "Same Old Lang Syne" is a great Holidays song. Fogelberg was one of of the best singer-songwriters but also a great person. He is missed.
I haven't listened to this song since my papa passed away on Christmas eve 2018. I miss him and boy this song never felt more personal. I feel my papa's spirit with me every day 💗🙏
One of the many singer song writers that we were blessed with in the seventies . Dan Fogelbergs lyrics were some of the most intimate. Another one in same character is " Same Old Lang Syne".
I love Dan Fogelberg's voice. He is a wonderful story teller. I was lucky enough to hear him in concert in the early 2000's He has many great songs. This my favorite of his songs.
Love this song and love Dan Fogelberg. He is not only a master musician and singer but a marvelous songwriter. He wrote most of his own songs. "Longer", "Believe in Me", "Same Auld Lang Syne", and "Run for the Roses".
Dan and Richard Marx are two of my favorites. I just buried my father on Wednesday so this song is dear to my heart. Dan has a number of songs to go thru. He will keep you busy!
The magic of Dan Fogelberg the way his music touched hearts this man, songs that draw so much emotion has an effect on a person his way of touching people with his music his gifts a true master of his craft.
Love this song, it hit me hard today, my dads birthday. He is many years gone from this earth and very much missed. Thank you for the reaction to this lovely song.❤️

@@leighsaldivar4439 he spoke at East Peoria High School.
@@sandymyers5002 oh ok. That’s nice he did that. Had he ever played at the heart of Illinois fair ? Back when we had good music playing.
Just ...
Run For the Roses, another one that makes me tear up.
I forgot Run for the Roses !!
🥰 🌹
@@juliewhite7469
How about Wisteria from his first album?
Thing is he is not only soft rock . His catalog is huge and it includes some rock and country worth listening to.. a great artist. Sorely missed.
And don't forget Part of the Plan..another great one.
His writing and storytelling were unmatched.
SOOOOOOO glad that you finally got to this national treasure of an artist. ❤
RIP, Dan ❤🙏😪💔💔💔
I even rewrote the chorus for him…
“I am the living legacy of the Steel Mill Rigger man…” ❤
My brothers and I lost our Dad to brain cancer 18 years ago. Thanks!!!
❤❤❤❤
U guys have become a staple in my every day life. You both will never know how much brighter you both make my darkest days. Reminds me of how pure and honesty still exist within humans, which whom can be a beast of a creature these days. Thank u!
You just spoke for many of us who thoroughly enjoy them and their reactions as well. It's a joy to see this young couple enjoying the music of my youth.
Yes, they are indeed special people! Touch my heart also.
Thanks and God bless you ♡♡
My favorite Folgelberg song is "longer than". It describes my feelings for my husband, my love since age 14, perfectly. So lush and beautiful.
Congratulations. It's just called "Longer."
I do hope you react to more of his songs like "Same Old Lang Syne", "Longer", "Sutter's Mill", "Run for the Roses" and many more...❤️❤️❤️
His song Longer is a beautiful love song.
I second Mychal's suggestion of Same Old Lang Syne. Perfect for this time of year, and a true story. Good guitar and lyrics describes every Fogelberg song. And his father did get to hear this become very popular before he passed.
PLEASE when you start your holiday music reactions try Dan Fogelberg Same Old Lang Syne. Another great storyteller song
It's spelled "Same Old Lang Syne." I love "Heart Hotels," too.
@@bobdavis4848 Ah you're right. I was going off memory and the spelling of the traditional song.
@@ToeTag1968 A common understandable mistake. It was a clever play on words Dan did. Happy Holidays. :-)
I don't think anyone can not love this song! Masterpiece
Same Old Lang Syne by Fogleberg is a MUST this holiday season!
You two are such beautifully, bighearted people. When songs like this come up I feel like I just want to give you two a huge hug. 😍
Stay real guys! ♥️😎
Awesome first choice with Dan Fogelberg another just as great is Same Old Lang Syne!!
As a native Kentuckian, I have to request Dan Fogelberg's "Run For The Roses" - a tribute to the Kentucky Derby., but so much more.
"Hard to Say", "Longer", "Make Love Stay", and "Same Old Lang Syne", are all excellent as well...
Beautiful song
This reminds me of my father so much. He was in the Army and served in Korea. I grew up on Army bases all over the world. He recently turned 91 years old and is fading. I enlisted when I turned 18. I am a living legacy, and I can never live up to the man he was.
There are several fantastic Dan Fogelberg songs you guys need to check out: Part of the Plan, Longer, Old Lang Syne, Run for the Roses just to touch on a few.
"Same Old Lang Syne."
Jay & Amber, only song I remember from him was "The Power of Gold" (with Tim Weisberg). Very good song!
SOOOO LONG AGO, A CLASSIC!
Dan Fogelberg is one of my favorites. So many great songs. Gone much too soon. 😞
Same ole langsyne!!!!! A true story about a Christmas visit to his hometown. Great song.
One of my main all-time artist who's poetic lyrics and melodies makes me cry. Love him ❤ 💕 ♥
Gives me the same emotions as Mike a,and the Mechanics ' in The Living Years. Does.
I love this man's music! Since it's getting closer to Christmas and News Years, I recommend his tune, "Same Old Lang Syne."
Musically a phenomenal song. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I’m so happy you’ve decided to play Dan. Such amazing artist.
Dan Folgerberg also sang Longer, Run for the Roses, and Same Old Lang Syne... all great songs.
Love Him So Much!! ❤ (R.I.P. Dan 💔💔)
Gotta do "Same Old Lang Syne" for your Christmas Eve reactions, since the story within the song
takes place on that day.
May your Path be the Light.
very touching story..
My dad passed away in my senior year in high school and this song came out in my early years of college. Such a beautiful and touching song I can relate to ❤️
Dan has many many great songs, his holiday song is " same ole lang syne" it's a great heartfelt holiday song.
A song that always make me feel good all over....I used to play this for my Dad whenever we would go out for a ride just hanging out...Miss you Dad...I played it for Dad when he was very sick and the tears were flowing.
Thank you playing that song.I just lost my father two weeks ago and playing that song brings back some happy memories 🙁🙁🙁
@@bobdavis4848 All these years and I hadn't noticed the word play with "old" and "auld" in the song titles. He was a wizard with words. Thanks
@@critterwatcher8009 You're welcome; seems you also have his "Portrait" box set; congratulations and Happy Holidays!
Dancing Shoes is a gorgeous song. I was in High School when I first heard Netherlands, the whole album is stunning.
@@anniemoran1 I agree. Dancing Shoes is lovely and another example of his beautiful lyrics.
Has dad lived long enough to see the song become a huge hit. Dan said one of his proudest moments was his dad sitting in the concert listening to this song!
"Same Old Land Syne" will hit you square in your heart. That should be next. But get ready. Have tissues ready...
I know right? I suggested it too. Gives me chills and breaks my heart.
I saw him perform with the Eagles when Souvenirs came out. He was so incredible.
