On October 12th 1980, 4 year old Lalana and her older brother Donald are put on a plane to Rhode Island without their mom, who has vanished just a few hours earlier, with no evidence left behind. It would take years for Lalana to finally solve the case herself, uncovering disturbing family secrets over 20 years old, and answer the question that’s been on her mind all this time: what happened to mom? Or rather, who wanted her to disappear?

Thank goodness for the stepmom. She is a good woman. She took over protecting those children. She could've just left them behind and walked out but she was a true hero.
She didn't take over protecting them. She was the first person in their lives to step up and protect them. Their mother knew that their dad was sexually abusing them and physically abusing them, and she did nothing about it. She stayed and kept her and her kids in that horrible, dangerous situation, and he ended up killing her. Thankfully the kids made it out alive, thanks to nobody else but their stepmom. I do give the grandparents credit for taking the kids and raising them, but their daughter really failed her kids by choosing not to protect them
@@nicole_silvers it seemed that she realised he’d probably kill them all if she ran away with the kids and she was trying to find a way to leave safely while sadly not realising how close to death she already was
You understand NOTHING. @@nicole_silvers
honestly what an ignorant thing to say and not only ignorant but unbelievably insensitive..@@nicole_silvers
@@nicole_silversyour pathetic! She died trying to save them, protect them and remove them!
Bill's father is such a breath of fresh air! So tired of hearing the parents or families of killers saying that they still love them and they forgive them. Pops was like, "what a fuckin disappointment I'm so ashamed of him, can't believe he's my son." And honestly, disappointment from a beloved family member may be worse than any jail sentence
Agree
Yep, that was refreshing. My father has passed but i know if i would have done something like that he would have wanted me on death row. He would have said the same thing, your not the son i raised.
My family is Italian, I hope beyond life itself that the cops got to me first.
Nah jail is way worse
Walahi! The guy was like uhhhh you can’t be mine
The cops knowing what he was doing to those kids because of the diary and not even investigating it..... Disgusting.
Many police are corrupt!
Right.. couldn’t they have atleast brought the diaries to cps or something and try to get the kids away from him. I’m baffled they read that and did nothing
They were probably doing the same thing to their families behind closed doors, just look at the insanely high DV statistics on law enforcement.
You have to fight the urge to generalize! Good luck 🤞
@@laurenS94was probably acceptable to them because their the same.
I commend Pauline for believing those kids!! What a win for a tragic story. Actually so many heroes in this one, especially Llalana
Exactly!
Also her brother tried to protect her. I am amazed that the cops were able to arrest that guy, after Pauline went to them. Also prouud of the old dad, who got his son to say just enough to prove he murdered Marlene.
Pauline found out what type of Monster he was .
Ikr she was lk not on my watch I bet he showed his true colors with her in some way cuz he seems to me lk he is abusive in one way or another with everyone he gets into a relationship with and he's a perve I hope he loves being on the other end of that kinda of abuse in jail cuz once they know what kind of abuse he was in jail for they don't let that go they could be murders yet would never hurt a child and they don't let that sh*t go ..
And Bill's father too
The grandfather, stepmom, brother, and daughter are all heroes, as is Marlene herself.
Marlene should have contacted the police when she knew what was happening instead she stayed for a year. She is no hero
@@mandurahmum123 Let's look at the time frame of when the murders happened. The 1980s. A time where murders of women were at an all time high thanks to the numerous serial killers on the loose. This shows that men's mentality back then about women was very backward since most of the investigators didn't even bother investigating the cases since it was about prostitues and stuff, ultimately blaming women for the tiniest of things. Let's say Marlene had told the police, they would have taken it as a hoax and accused her of trying to run away with the children and take her husbands money (Women were considered gold-diggers even then). No one will believe that a father would do that to his own kids, hell, I've gone through the same thing and in my country it's almost taboo to even talk about it, with people calling someone like me brainwashed by media in order to get my parents arrested or something. Marlene knew their mindsets, so she chose to find a different way to get her kids out, but she got killed before she could. If the police didn't believe what was written in the diary where Marlene had clearly written that her son was molested, then why would they believe it coming from the woman's mouth herself? Marlene knew damn well they wouldn't
@@mandurahmum123Why are you ALL OVER this comment section, bad mouthing Marlene?? Stupid troll, get a life!! You are probably a friend of that monster!!
Woman were treated way different back then. Though Woman were supposed to have rights children too. For the most part it was ignored.
@@mandurahmum123IT WAS FKN KENTUCKY!!! Which, obviously, you’re not from.
Never threaten an abuser. Just pack up and go!!!
Your advise is one of the best I ever heard. I think the same.
You don’t think he would’ve found her and still did what he did? He as set on killing her sadly. She married a demon. And she didn’t know but she was brave for standing up for her kids.
@@nakedbarebear8090He was never that powerful. He wouldn't have found her, even back then, the DV system is like an underground railroad for escapees and survivors. Nowadays though the system to help women and their children escape is even more like a well oiled machine, victims just have to Google the number, make a call, and they'll get instructions on how to be as safe as they can be and escape if/and when they want to. They'll even get instructions on how to hide the call. Sometimes we'll even pick them up and take them to a safe house. Hell, we've even helped legally crafted entirely new identities for women and their children and helped them completely fall off the abuser's grid, in a couple of cases the abuser's couldn't find their victims despite having millions at his disposal or even being a member of law enforcement.
@@nakedbarebear8090 that is certainly possible, yes. Maybe it would've just been a little harder for him to be able to do it
....and watch your back while you're doing it😔😔😔😔
It’s refreshing that his father cooperated and got him to basically confess. “The no good son of a bitch id hang him myself if I could get my hands on him.” I’ve seen so many parents of killers defend their children lately in these true crime videos, it’s nice to see someone seeing that their son is evil and helping to catch him. I say this as a parent myself. I’m not saying he is a good dad or even a good person bc I don’t know him at all. But I’m sick of seeing parents go “it was an accident 🥺 my baby is innocent 😔 he didn’t mean to”
For example, in folly beach SC, the case of the girl who was drunk (3x legal limit) going 65 in a 20 killing a bride and injuring 3 others. Her parents comforting her and telling her none of it is her fault and that she shouldn’t be sorry. Telling his daughter “bad things happen to good people”. I watched a video on it yesterday and it boiled my blood.
I actually shouted out loud when his dad said that! He is clearly a decent man who is disgusted with his son! What was the video you watched about the drunk girl, if you don't mind sharing?
@@laurenwest3090Mackenzie shrilla- Annie Elise from 10 to life did a really good video on it - it’s infuriating though, the girl who did it, her parents and especially the statement the mum gave to the court- absolutely blood boiling!
I missed something. The young 13 year old son tells 2nd. wife presumably about the sexual abuse and she calls the cops. He gets 15 years. Where was the proof? Did I miss something? He gets time on an unproved accusation? Can''t picture him confessing.
@@sleeplessinscotland9394 mhm! I watched the one by rotten mango (Stephanie Soo) but I love 10 to life too, she’s very kind and down to earth. I was absolute furious the entire time I was listening to her bullshit. I live in SC where this happened.
Some people are trying to say she’s an alcoholic as an excuse and it extra infuriated me. Im a heroin and meth addict with almost 4 years clean and even I knew not to drive high because I knew I’d kill someone. I had my partner drive me if I needed to go somewhere. And even if I had and I’d killed someone, I’d NEVER blame the innocent people and say they shouldn’t have had a golf cart on the road. Here in sc there’s plenty of people who ride golf carts around and it’s not illegal except in main highways. They were in a 20mph zone so they were perfectly fine but SHE blames THEM for being in HER way. When she’s 3x the legal limit going 65 in a 30. Just absolutely horrific behavior from her and her parents. I can see where she got her spoiled behavior from
@@ash_tray absolutely - I never got a driving license when I was younger as I knew I liked to go for drinks spontaneously and it’d be too tempting to then drive, so I removed the option before I made a stupid drunk mistake. Now, i rarely drink and wouldn’t even consider it after just one drink. I knew I was too young, immature and impulsive to be trusted but I wasn’t stupid - if you can’t behave yourself and take something as dangerous as driving seriously and in her case to use it as an actual weapon you shouldn’t be anywhere near a car. She ruined so many lives that day, including her own and yet she’s playing the victim. When she said why is this happening to me I honestly shouted at my screen!
There are some heros in this story! LaLana of course, her brother Donald, Bill's father, and Bill's second wife, the children's step-mother Pauline. It was remarkable that Pauline actually believed what the children said and called the police. If he had not been convicted of the child molestaion at that time this story would be even worse! Glen is also an interesting character, having been trusted to keep the diaries safe... reporting some other man's wife missing before the husband reported any absence. Brilliant video from the Unseen team, thank you. 😀
Glenn was her only friend that's how my parents met. My mother wasn't an emotionally abusive marriage she went to my dad because he was a friend from church to rest. And he gave her shelter when my mom's first husband kicked her out of the house because she wasn't bringing in any money. Do some up how bad he was towards my mom he went to his mom's house ate there and my mom was eating bacon grease sandwiches.

The young brother had a lot of guts, to go to Pauline & tell her must have been a big gamble for him, because being a step mum she could have easily told the moster of a father what the young boy had said, instead of ringing the police. So she deserves a lot of recognition also. What an evil evil person this "thing" (he is neither a man or a father) pure bloody evil, & gutless to murder a woman by shooting her, to sexual abusing the children, & lying to them all their lives about their mother, just a coward that hid behind lie's & threats to innocent children. I'm glad the dad of the monster, rang & helped the police too. God bless each one of this family BUT not the "thing" Perhaps the devil will look after his own, eventually!
Sad story.
I’m so glad to hear of children telling an adult, especially a step parent, of the molestation and then doing something to stop it.
And Glen, for keeping those diaries safe, what a true friend to her. What a good guy.
And Bill. What a good grandfather to those kids. Good for him to not cover for his son.
If somebody's loved one goes missing and a few days later the other person moves out of state, there's a 98% chance they know they're never coming back because they killed em.
It should have been clear from those diaries. I know they said they are taken as hearsay, but why they let him move out with the children if there was a chance it was him and he was abusive?
The love that the mother and those two siblings had for each other is truly amazing.
Bill's father is a real one, his little giggle at his son getting caught was everything
"He don't deserve to breathe the air!"
What a gutsy woman. I wish her a happy life.
The grandfather and that step mom! Thank you for helping these children🙏🏼
the diary heavily implies he sexually abused his son and police didn t even ask the son about it? I mean that case could have been solved way earlier.. or at least the father could have been punished for the sexual abuse way earlier.
Because the diary didn't tell exactly what he do , it's not specific thats why they can't convict him.
@@mainexx1352 True, but I think saitamab (the op commenter) was questioning why they didn't interview the son himself about it. And not about convicting him on the diary notes.
What a story!! What that children had to endure for years is mind blowing. What is remarkable is the soft way Lalana talks, without cussing, without bitterness but with strength and yes, there are a lot of heroes in this story as 1 fellow crime watcher rightfully mentioned. Greetings from South Africa
I LIVE for the Victim's side of the story. We as a part of the true crime community should support more creators like Unseen and focus on the victim, not the killer. Everyone wants to focus on why they did it, but these stories with the victim's statements and testimonies REALLY makes it clear why people would do such horrible things. These videos not only show the whole truth, but they shine the light on the victims and spotlight where they are now. I adore this content, and the support you guys show for those affected.
When the second wife comes into the picture I was devastated. My mind went straight to she’s going hurt those babies too😢 Because he’s a monster I thought who would date him? Another bad person 🤷🏻♀️

I truly expected the stepmom to be like one of those pickme women we hear about in child abuse cases. That she would go snitch to dad and join the abuse. But no, she freaking called the cops on her husband. Pauline, you rule.
This just proves that you never confront the person that is abusing you. Just get gone! After that you can do what needs doing!
This is absolutely heartbreaking. Those poor children had to endure their father's abuse while not even knowing their mother was dead. I cried when they got justice for their mother. I wish them all the best in life, I just wish that monster would've been brought to justice sooner. I love how the grandfather said his own son didn't deserve to breathe the air and was disgustingly ashamed of his actions by saying I can't believe my own son would do such a thing.
Kudos to Pauline. A wonderful step mother!
Horrific. Poor, poor children, and mom.
Bill’s dad is awesome. Nothing peeves me more than denying somebody’s a murderer
How can what is written in someone's personal journal be considered hearsay? It's literally in their own words
At least you paid attendance asked the appropriate questions.
Most simply overlooked the hearsay issue. It was the case law of the time.
Its hearsay because theres no one to attest it indeed is that persons diary & they wrote those things. The police didnt even find it amongst her personal things, a 3rd party brought it in. Alot of ppl have faked other ppls diary entries to suit them

I never understand the 'good behaviour' thing, he hurt his kids, keep him locked up. It anger me that the police knew he was hurting them and did nothing, they should have found something to get him, not just leave them to be hurt
Why do the justice system always
release sex offenders out early?!,
when he was sentenced to serve 15
years, he was let out after just serving 11 and then he went on to
commit more sexual crimes, which would have never have happened if he was still behind bars!, the only
good thing the child abuser ever did was to finally pass away in 2018,

If he was jailed in Rhode Rhode Island, there is (was?) a “good behavior” law. Shockingly, child predators don’t offend in adult prisons where children aren’t allowed, so years get knocked off their sentences. There is a famous case there of a young guy who was assaulting and consuming young children who got released in his 50’s for “good behavior”. Hopefully the law was repealed or modified.

How can any parent abuse their children??? Animals have more love and compassion for their young then abusive human being parents do.
It's sickening. As any mentally-healthy parent can attest, they would do anything to protect their children, including take a bullet for them. We wouldn't hesitate even a split second to protect our children. It's beyond baffling (and utterly heart-breaking) to know there are 'parents' out there who actively bring harm to their children.
I know… I recently read about the dad that executed his 3 young boys (all under 10) in their back yard and I felt so sick. I gave my son a big hug after I picked him up from school. I can’t fathom hurting my son 😢 But there are parents out there that would.

In what world is it more suspicious an affair partner reports a woman missing after 2 days, than her husband whom she lives with/Dad of her 2 small kids _not_ reporting her missing??
The police failures here are nothing short of criminal. I’m truly in awe of the survivors Lalana & Donald. Their story in several ways reminds me of Collier Landry.
I wish Lalana and Donald nothing but happiness, peace, love, joy, and a feeling of safety & belonging the rest of their lives.
You note general police failures, yet fail to actually denote any of them.
It came over in the video as though the police pretty much thought he did it and he was the primary suspect, but they couldn't prosecute the murder because no evidence and not knowing if she was actually murdered.
I still think they could have interviewed the son based on the abuse mentioned in the diary, at least getting the children away from the father.
But it's unlikely he could have been convicted for murder at that time.
Watching tonight ❤❤❤❤ always makes me cry as a man and that helps so much thank you unseen we appreciate ur videos
I love that you can say openly that you are a man and you cry over these videos! We as a society need to get over the idea that men shouldn’t cry. Personally, the more emotionally available and open a man is the sexier they are. Crying is good for the soul! ❤
@@ash_tray A THOUSAND PERCENT RIGHT!! YOU STOLE THE WORDS OUT OF MY MOUTH. "I'LL KEEP SPREADING THE WORD/LOVE." 🇺🇸🙏❤️ THANK YOUU
Thank you
Llana and Donald are so inspiring, i just can't imagine all they have had to overcome just to put one foot in front of the other in life after all they've been though❤ I sincerely hope that they are surrounded by people who love and appreciate and support them in life❤❤❤
And the worlds best daughter award goes to…. joking aside, Lalana is incredible and a truly incredible person, she never gave up and that’s amazing 👏👏👏
I love the stepmom, amazing woman that helped break the circle of horror.
The courage of Lalana is amazing! Love her!
Wait, so the cops had her diary this whole time, were she talks about the husband being inappropriate with her son, and they let him keep the kids???
