  • “I'm not saying it's right, I know it's not right, but that's the way I've chosen it.”
On June 15th 1980, 8 year old Beth Stauffer calls her dad to wish him a happy father’s day, the first clue police got after she went missing on May 16th. After quickly hanging up, she returns to the tiny closet where her and her mother Mary have been chained and imprisoned by an obsessed man who has been stalking Mary for years. The captor, Ming Sen Shiue, believes that the longer they are kidnapped, the more chances Mary, his 9th grade teacher, will eventually fall in love with him. “Will we go home?” In the dark, frightened Beth asks her mom. At that moment, Mary, knowing deep in her heart of hearts they might not be able to leave ever, promises Beth with a yes.

I agree, however survivors who can't clearly see a brighter day don't deserve to be shunned. I know we all like happy endings but no one's life is a movie. I can promise you these two women haven't just moved on but like the narrator says "There is a life worth living". On a side note, I'm spiritual, so I believe people like Mary and Beth are mb chosen to go through this type of pain to help keep hope/strength alive within others or to keep others from suffering. I feel there's more to depraved crimes than just horror and cruelty. Check out the full case of Amyjane Brandhagen. As someone majoring in criminal justice who's also a believer, I gain a lot of insight on the human condition and just how connected we really are from watching these cases.

I told him "My dad did this." He then laughed at me and went "Dad's don't do that." I sat there for five minutes kinda perplexed at what I could do after that. It was a catholic school, and the head nun found out and she helped me out, fixed me up and told me. "God doesn't stand by this behavior." Regardless my dad rocked up into church at the school the following weekend for mass and I kinda gave up on God. When I turned to my mum after I went "Mum I don't wanna go to church anymore." and she went "Okay." The only time I enter a church now is for a wedding or a funeral, but I won't do it.

Like, we as adults who listen to stories about abductions and true crime have this mindset where you should probably question everything to a degree. But as teenagers? I can't speak for us all, but how many absolute bullshitters did we know? I think most teens are naturally cynical because they are always surrounded by other teenagers that are trying to figure out who they are. Teens in the age of the immediately accessible internet would probably think twice if they were already exposed to this information, but even then I don't expect teens to fully grasp and comprehend the gravity of a situation they could find themselves in. I hope my daughter would tell me if some kid told her she was kidnapped, because as an adult I know I can think rationally and investigate the situation or inform proper law enforcement. I don't think the kids were wrong, but they weren't right either. Ideally you would have wanted then to tell their parents of the interaction or go talk to an officer, but teens aren't entirely rational. This is so shocking. Elizabeth and my Mother were childhood friends, she taught my mom how to ride a bike when they moved to the Philippines. Elizabeth and Sister Mary knew my Mother as Girlie or Grace and my Mom lived with them for a month or two when they were in Dumagete, Philippines. My Mom told me that Sister Mary would always kiss her and Elizabeth's forehead before tucking them to bed while her husband stands at the doorway. They would always read stories to Steve before he sleep.
Sister Mary treated my Mom as her daughter and she wanted to adopt her but my grandfather (Mom's dad) opposed because he wanted his children to be complete.
Sister Mary told my Grandfather that they were kidnapped before, my Mom heard it but she doesn't know what the word "Kidnapped" means because she was so young and she wasn't that fluent in English.
Mom even told me that Sister Mary and Elizabeth spoke fluent Tagalog and Bisaya.
If any of you reading this know where or how to contact them, please tell me because my Mom wanted to know if they're doing well and, also to Thank them for letting her live in their house and treating her good💜😭😭✨✨✨✨

This one really hit a nerve. Little Mary resembles my daughter, it just made it so relatable for me. I know that might sound silly. How terrifying for the mother and little Mary. Oh, poor Jason… If only he didn’t see, an innocent little life stolen for nothing but a moment of seeing the wrong thing. Just awful. I can’t believe he planned this, he planned it and carried it out. I hope he never sees the light of day again. 3 lives, one taken two forever changed, thankfully they are incredibly strong and resilient. Not to let that be the story of their lives.

I genuinely can’t imagine. The emotions of “oh my god, my baby is alive” mixed with “dear god I need to get them back and get them safe” mixed with sheer relief, mixed sheer panic, but you’re talking to your obviously frightened young child and want to keep them calm and not upset them, so you, while entirely mentally self destructing, you must speak calmly and no cry or get upset. It’s wild and I don’t know how he pulled it off. The only thing I can think of, is he was so afraid for his children that it almost forced him to respond that way.

How he could just talk to her like it’s any other phone call just breaks my heart… the amount of fortitude that man had to hold it together for her sake is awe inspiring. And to pull it off seamlessly after just being blindsided by her voice, is even more amazing…. The panic, the joy, the fear, the anger, and the elation hitting him all at the same time, at the same moment, and still switches instantly to caring father tone… I know I wouldn’t have been able to hold it together in that moment.

All of these horrific stories are just heartbreaking. What I noticed though is that they always say something like: “he abducted the ‘wrong‘ person“. There is no right or wrong person for a crime… that‘s so weird to hear. What they actually mean is: “the criminal was foolish enough to believe their victims weren‘t brave enough.“
They were the right people to put an end to it, but other than that, nobody is right or wrong and nobody deserves anything like this.
Amazing that they made it through this 👏🏼
