On one of the last nights of 1999, Krystal is tucking herself into bed after a fun sleepover with her best friend Katie, but they are suddenly woken up by a window creaking open. As Krystal opens her eyes, a man holds a knife to Katie’s neck near the edge of the bunk bed. From that moment on, two things are on Krystal’s mind: surviving through the night, and making sure serial killer Tommy Lynn Sells is brought to justice.

The fact she was holding her slit throat, literally bleeding out, and is only focused on getting help for her friend and her family is so telling to her character. I hope her sweet soul is protected for the rest of her life.

I just finished watching a video where this little twin (I think) girl had to do the same thing for her sister.
In the video she talked about lying next to her friend, Kaylene.. And hearing her gurgle. That's the death rattle. If I were her friend's mother, I would be so thankful that she was there for her at the end.
The human body is astonishing, the strength some people must possess in those what could've or should've been their final moments but it wasn't is a miracle in and of itself! I can't imagine you live very long with a cut throat especially if he would've done it from ear to ear. Obviously, she wouldn't be here today. 🙏

The wildest part of the Tommy Lynn Sells story, to me, is that a mother was convicted of killing her son and spent years in prison before a true crime writer who had been writing a book about Sells recognized his signature in the crime. The writer wrote to Tommy Lynn Sells, and he confessed that it was actually him. The mother was exonerated.

@@ines1084 I think that based on the evidence all they had was her testimony. As for his confession, is not enough evidence. The law is written that the evidence must put him at the scene. Too, most states require that a confession does not prevent a trial. All the evidence must be heard because there is only one chancre to it it right. It's the law.
That’s what I was thinking. He admitted to the crime! Why would he take it to trail? If he had pleaded guilty he would of gotten life not death. So strange
There are a lot of false confessions. For some people, life in prison is better than scratching by with low wages and being possible homelessness. Some people like the attention, even if it is negative. But a confession should match whatever evidence they have. It may have been prior to him confessing to other crimes and her testimony is all there is.

I gotta say, the tv show that arranged the meeting between her and another victim of a similar crime was probably one of the best things a tv show could do in this type of situation. Knowing there are others like her definitely helped her in one way or another. She also remembered the advice from the girl, and that helped her carry on with the testimony
Seriously, that was so touching. I applaud the directors of the show for thinking of this. The ring with the cross on it was the cherry on top. Also, the doctors who stitched everything back together did an absolutely amazing job.

The guy who moderates the show had his son murdered, which I think makes him very empathetic with the survivors
@@kallaen yes. His son was murdered in '81, AMW started im '88 I think. He wasn't their first choice, but I don't think they could've gotten a more suitable host.

The fact that she comforted her friend while she herself was dying brings me to tears. What an amazingly strong person.
I hope all her life she has friends as loyal and kind and she is. Kate must have been a wonderful little girl as well, to inspire such friendship.
Even though her own throat was slit, she still crawled to her friend and comforted her into the last moments.

When Krystal opened that little parcel with the ring from Kristie & says “Mommy" 😭 it really hits you how young she was. I’m so glad Kristie was able to pass on strength to Krystal to testify. 💛

Yep. No idea why they put kids on the stand ever except maybe to point out whodunit for 30 seconds in the case of trials when they don't confess. I mean, does anyone really think that the jury was going to say 'not guilty' if she had been unable to continue after the recess, even if he hadn't confessed? I feel like they usually make kids do this because it's supposed to be cathartic or something but I'd be offended beyond reconciliation at anyone who made me do that. Horrible.

@@truenokill First degree murder is an automatic life sentence or death penalty. There is no more harsh sentence. He did not recant.
@@Veldrusara we don't really know that. We don't know the full trial details. Prosecution would NOT put a child on the stand if they didn't feel they must.
The bond that Kristie and Krystal held, and how Kristie helped Krystal with her own trial was very touching, I can only imagine how helpful that was for the poor girl.
I'm normally pretty good watching true crime stuff, but I genuinely teared up when she saw that Kristie sent her the ring she wore in her testimony. You could tell it meant absolutely everything to Krystal
That broke me. Seeing her struggling to give her testimony. That is real courage. Being scared, but doing the business anyway. Well done girl, you're a real hero.

I clicked on this because the victim survived and I was in the mood for a feel good story. Then there was a second victim I didn't see coming. What an empowering, heartbreaking tale.
I love this channel so much primarily because it doesn't make the murders seem "more likable" like those true crime shows but rather gives strength and pride to the victims/survivors

I know she was in shock but the fact that she vaguely knows that she was injured badly but her only thought was to comfort her friend really shows her character.
My mom’s young cousin was raped and murdered in 1966. The entire family was so wounded by every aspect of the tragedy, and her parents bled till their very last days. I can’t imagine that kind of grief. It’s hard not to despise anyone who could destroy a life or two in a few minutes and derive any satisfaction from such an act. Inhuman.
The way she cried out for Katie during her testimony broke my heart. She deserves nothing but peace 😢

Anyone else amazed that, at only 10 yrs old and despite what she’d just been through, she was capable of writing out a note for the neighbor while she had to be panicking? Then, while only capable of communicating through writing what he looked like, she was able to provide enough info for a sketch artist? And not just that but, that she was so accurate? She was an amazing girl?

Jennifer Schuett was another very brave little girl. At only 8 years old she was left for dead with her throat cut too like Krystal. Jennifer also wrote notes too, because her vocal cords were cut, so she was unable to speck like Krystal was at first. Jennifer's description of her attacker provided a very accurate sketch just like Krystals did. Both girls have went on to talk again and have become amazingly strong inspirational women.
No I'm not amazed. I don't take anyone for granted. There are many resourceful children in this world. If animals like dogs cats and apes can communicate, I'm not going to be shocked when children can communicate more effectively than the average adult can. Yes that includes under traumatic circumstances. SOME kids are amazing. That's a relatively known fact.

honestly, there is an unbelievable amount of courage Crystal showed by just placing her finger on the image of the man that attempted to take her life.
I'll never forget my big sisters testifying against my dad after he killed our Mama. I was five and to little to be put on the stand but they were 16 and 20. Blessed are those who suffer for they shall be comforted.

One of his other murders is even more gruesome. Look up the Dardeen Family murder. It’s one of the most horrific things I’ve ever heard of, though evidently he’s never been convicted and there are doubts that he committed the murders
Was so interesting seeing how he eagerly confessed details and wanted to tell about his other killings. He was driven by something inside himself to kill, but was glad to be caught. Bizarre.

This must be your first true crime documentary? There's a dude in South America who suspected to killed *300* children. His name is Pedro Lopez aka "The Monster of the Andes." And their laws down there are so repugnant until they released him and his whereabouts are currently unknown.
What a wonderful, incredible girl. At such a young age she brought down a serial killer! When she was bleeding, instead of running away she stayed by her friend's side. Her courage is admirable

I'm a 45 year old man, and I feel nothing but rage when I watch this video. At the moments you both stated above, they didn't make me sad it just made me fill with even more anger. I hate bullies and I hate when people take advantage of the innocent. Honestly if this happened to any of my children I would do like that Dad did in Florida back in the '80s. When he shot and killed that karate instructor on live TV, who in molested his son.

Children usually have more courage to tell the truth and confront the abuser/killer in the court than the adults. Even if they are scared. I really think this girl is amazing and strong!

The real bravery is not her survival instinct. It's her conscious ability to battle the fear of facing her attacker face-to-face in the courtroom and revisiting her horror night just so that she can tell the whole world about what she went through that night. No amount of courage can make a normal person to stand up like that at age of 11. That's just brutal in her own prime!

Always check your state’s offender registry! It really shocked me to know that there were a lot of people convicted of some horrible things where I loved from and that are plenty still around where I am now. Thankfully a lot of it was either indecent exposure in public or something minor, but there’s still a lot who have some really awful offenses. Always check and be safe!

The amount of understanding, bravery, but over all the raw drive to just survive in just this ten year old girl is more than a hundred grown people, what a traumatic and heart braking story, I hope everything in her life goes according to plan.
This is one of my favorite stories. She did EVERYTHING right and got that man sent away. And even more so? She went on to LIVE!!! I wish I could hug her and tell her how proud I am of her.

13:49 I had suspected/hoped this was going to happen after the narrator had mentioned how Christy was wearing that ring when she was in court. So when they showed Krystal being given that before trial, I immediately started bawling.
This was such a beautiful and IMPACTFUL gesture and I know these two brave women will have a lifelong connection to one another.
It’s awful and so unfair that this type of trauma is what they both share, but I’m so glad that they met each other and bonded. I’m sure that helped them both. They are both incredibly strong. ❤

It saddens me that on January 2nd 2000 I was turning 8 and this little girl had to go through all of that. I appreciate and respect her strength and perseverance.

Seeing Krystal just TRY to explain her side of the story in the court room, I started crying.
Man, this really got to me. Seeing the footage of such a young girl persevering through such deep trauma in order to bring justice to her best friend really got to me. I have a niece her age, and she even sounds like my niece, and I couldn't help but imagine if my niece were in such a terrible position and it dug even deeper into my heart. She was so brave and selfless, and she still is as a grown woman.
Imagine being the man Krystal goes to, reading “will I live” and seeing that poor girl bleeding from her neck. She is so brave & thank goodness that man helped her.
These young girls were so courageous being able to sit in a courtroom and tell exactly what happened to them and be able to get through it. I don't even know how I would be in that situation and I hope to never find out. Obviously I wouldn't be a young child but I don't want to ever see you anything happen to my children cuz I would not be able to live through that. I hope these girls were able to find some peace in their lives after the horrific things were done to them

These monsters are everywhere. And people have the nerve to ban guns where if many of these victims had one, they would've taken these scumbags out of commission and saved countless lives.
Krystal is stronger than most of us, we should all be willing to admit that. Keeping her composure during that grueling night really is something, let alone testifying against that monster. When she wrote a note asking if her best friend survived... god that's heavy. I have not wept at a case like i did just now in a while. Krystal absolutely rocks, and Kaylene deserves to rest in peace. May Krystal's valiant efforts to soothe her passing have been fruitful 💔.

True they’re very fragile and vulnerable to the cruelty of the world…but they’re also far stronger, braver and more resilient than we often realize, or remember to give them credit for.

Finally a comment from somebody who feels exactly the way I do! A lot of these people on here talking about how they cried and boohooed but I feel nothing but pure rage. His arrogance is what pisses me off as well. Cases like this make me want to turn into the guy from the TV show "Dexter"

I watch true crime videos ALL the time. This one had me unable to stop crying. Everything in life has a purpose..her purpose was to put a very very disgusting man into prison and soon to death.
Then what might be the purpose of the crimes that criminal committed?
@@toothpastetoothbrush8114 Good cannot exist without tragedy. Man is evil and will always commit crimes. The survivors of those crimes help others. There is no real "point" and you shouldnt MAKE YOURSELF suffer for some righteous reason. The crimes happen to give strength and courage to future victims of other crimes....Imagine being the only one to survive a specific kind of crime and no one is there to comfort you? no stories? instead you are told how unique and brave you are, how it must be part of Gods plan that you went through what you did....
Sometimes I break down sobbing in my to Mama's arms asking why im in so much (physical and psychological) pain and what is it all for and why am i even still alive for, why did I suffer for, what could possibly be my purpose as a crippled useless depressed 22 year old who cant stand up without excruciating pain and well...No one know, but she still comforts me. No one knows Gods plan but he knows everything that has and will happened. If he intervened and there was no tragedy then we wouldnt have free will at all
Watching you claim this as her "purpose" is pretty gross. She's a child. Her purpose is to live a life of happiness.

krystal is so brave for standing her ground like that, not to mention her selflessness throughout the situation. it's an unbelievably hard thing to go through, and it terrifies me to know of the kinds of monsters living in this world that would even think of doing that. krystal remained so strong and was so smart though she was wounded. this story brought me to tears multiple times. bless her and everyone involved with it. ❤️❤️

After working as a nurse for many years I have learned to not feel super emotional when people pass away or even seeing dead people, always made me scared if I am becoming disturbed, but the one sentence in this documentry about the killer being 'indifferent' during the testimony is just scary. Her crying during her testimony did make me cry... not even me who have taught myself to hold my emotions inwards could not not FEEL emotion during that. It's scary how some people just have zero emotion while murdering others, I have a very hard time understanding that, you can't teach yourself to be emotionless, you have to have something seriously wrong with yourself if you are that cold. Krystal, you are an angel!
this was beyond insane, how humans can be literal monsters. It is crazy how we live in a world where people who take others lives roam around freely.
And for the part of Krystal, we need every suspect/witness to be like her. OH HELL WOULDVE IT BEEN AN EVEN ADULT, they wouldnt have had the courage to be so brave as her. She motivates me and im sure others. You are amazing, even imagining myself in that condition shakes every bone of mine. You are a living epitome of courage and bravery. Geez, and this Kristie Reed... so young to have been attacked within her home as well and to have lost her sister in that senseless crime. And what a lovely young lady she is to try and help Krystal out with some helpful tips to try and get through having to give court testimony against this monster.
