July 31st 1995, Baraboo police department receives a 911 call in which a teenager calmly claims he is trapped in a house and has both his legs fractured. Little do they know, the caller, 13 year old Thad Phillips, is two hours away from death due to internal bleeding, in the house of a school mate. After two days of torment and two failed escapes, he becomes the only survivor in the hand of the notorious teen serial killer Bonebreaker, carrying the key to solving another mysterious “accidental” death from a year ago.

I sent a few bucks, but US should really get public health care finally. I thought there are at least some nonprofit or maybe state organizations that help with med bills to victims of crimes, but apparently no and now donors from around world and US are paying for US health system failures to help the brave Thad. If any US citizen sees this, imagine: I am from eastern europe, we earn like peanuts compared to you and even we have public health care! And now I am sending money to US to help a victim like Thad to pay med bills that are usually crazily inflated by the health providers or declined to be reimbursed by private insurance? Pretty weird, innit? For a "2nd/3rd world" country citizen to be helping pay med bills of a "1st world" country and "the best country in the world" citizen, heh? 🤦‍♀️

When you hear stories like this (Mary Vincent is another survivor who makes you wonder how she could have been kidnapped by a serial killer, SA’d and tortured for hours, her arms were cut off, and assuming she was dead, was thrown off a cliff, naked. She somehow made it up the cliff and onto a highway. The serial killer served five years, was released, and murdered another young girl), the person survives because they are young and possess super-human determination.
It isn’t a knock at people who die; I’m 100% certain I would give up. I don’t think it’s divine intervention. That suggests a higher power allowed those who didn’t survive to senselessly succumb to torture and murder.

I’m so glad you elected to cover this. I don’t feel there is enough coverage of this case, and what is out there is all the same. There was a man working on a podcast and actually got interviews with both Thad Phillips and the perpetrator, but it eventually fell by the wayside and his podcast went a totally different direction. I would love to read those interviews, though.
It’s appalling that the original coroner failed to identify all of those broken bones. By declaring it a drowning of undetermined cause, and by failing to complete a competent autopsy, it placed that “drowning case” at the bottom of the list of investigations - if it even made the list at all. Even with the Steiners being told that the perpetrator was involved, the police weren’t even calling it a murder and didn’t know that the bones were broken. So he was involved in… what?
It just makes me feel awful for the Steiner parents and, most of all, for Thad Phillips. That coroner failed everyone in this case.

Could it be a lazy coroner since the boy Chris Steiner was found in the water?

My exact thoughts. This could have been avoided. Shame on that coroner

@@indyford3531 the presumption of drowning was a reasonable one, but we don’t rule on a presumption. The coroner should have done full-body X-Rays, at a minimum, as part of their death investigation ; had that simple and typical step been followed, there would have been much greater action taken on the case.

@@mydyisgod I don’t remember how long the perpetrator had lived in the area, but if he’d been there long then there is every chance that his other two alleged victims were overlooked by the very same ME.

@@pembrokelove Aren't coroners and medical examiners two different things? If I understand right, there aren't nearly as many highly-trained m.e.'s as there are coroners, who aren't required to have much training at all (none in some locations, though that seems hard to believe but I remember reading it sometime back).

This poor young man…I’m so glad that he survived.
Toughness of mind, and body. He could’ve died from infection from the large broken bones.
This makes “Misery” look like a nursery rhyme.

Damn, all that and he not only survived but literally dragged himself to get help, then he has to face getting shot several times, as well, and still go through with the trial. He is unbelievable. Amazing.

Thad is an absolute legend. This story is unbelievable. I can't believe even after all that he also got shot, and still continued on to court. I am so glad he seems okay after such horrors and that he's got a good life and a happy family. Also the way I see the fact he walks with a limp is that it's not a mark of the bone-breaker, but a mark of his absolutely legendary fighting and survival spirit! Thank you for covering his story, I'd never heard about it before.

This guy is a real and undefeatable superhero. I‘m so happy that he survived and got through incredibly strong (the way it seems). He deserves all the best in the world.
I love that this channel celebrates the survivors and how justice was found in their cases (still most of the time not complete justice and not soon enough). When I feel too consumed in my own problems and traumas, this really helps me in terms of seeing the strenght, courage and determination to live of these survivors in the most unbelievable and horrific situations. It humbles oneself in a good way, it‘s incredibly inspiring, motivating and empowering.
My heart goes out to each and every one of these warriors and also all of the victims of such heinous crimes.
