She's the standard mother. If she's a legend then every single mother who's ever protected their child(ren) is a legend. That includes mother bears. I'm exactly the same way, it never usually gets me like this story got me. What an amazing mother Loretta was, I'm so glad her daughter fought for justice.
So glad they finally got him!!!! Mom is the best for going to any length to protect her daughter, even not yelling out when being assaulted. So happy for you, Heidi! And what an amazing cop that helped her solve it!
It makes me angry that the grandmother knew and never turned him in. And that the police missed so much and that Tom lived most of his life having gotten away with it. I hope police are more thorough now.
There's no reason to believe that the grandmother didn't tell the police, since he was arrested at the time'. He was released because of a lack of evidence. The vague testimony of a 4 yo was probably deemed insufficient to go to trial. And I'm not sure what the police missed back then, either. At least one person remembered about the name written in blood, so it must have been known at the time, for instance. And the 10 yo recognized him, but there was no evidence that the man who tried to abduct her was the same who committed the murder three blocks away.
I doubt that she will ever really be "okay". But hopefully, she's learned how to live with something that horrific. It's all she really can do really.🤷🏻♂️
My Mom died when I was eleven and like Heidi's family none of the adults wanted to talk about her. It was like she just disappeared one day. Kids need someone to talk about the death of a close family member to. They need to be comforted and encouraged to remember good things about the deceased. Happy memories they had together, otherwise it takes a very long time to get over the death. I could not talk about my mother without crying until I was grown.
when someone i'm close to leaves/dies, i remember this random quote "don't be sad because it ended, be happy because it happened." (r.i.p for your mother
That certainly was ultimate proof what Mothers will do to protect their child . The thought of her being stabbed 17 times in the back and more , and to not make a sound for Heidi's safety is like unbelievable . Heidi you are your mother ,as she never made a sound for you , you never stopped being persistent and vocal for her, until YOU got the SOB .Your both Heros
the grandmother really played a big role in delaying the case. she indirectly played a role in protecting the murderer. this could've been solved literally years ago. absolutely devastating that heidi had to live years without justice.
I think it would be harsh to say that; we don't know how the original case proceedings went. If she wrote down everything Heidi said-- who's to say she didn't bring it up as a secondhand witness? She must have, given that it was her daughter, and that she was so scrupulous in making sure that everything was documented. There simply wasn't enough to circumstantial evidence to go on in 1970, and that's why the murderer went unsentenced. It might have been rather difficult for the judge to try someone on the word of a four-year-old alone, looking through a keyhole no less. Afterall, it has to be 'beyond a reasonable doubt'.
@@charredtodeath2205regardless, she kept telling her grandchild to forget it, and to stop talking about it at all which is horrible and not helpful in solving the case. To the grandma letting her rest in peace was sweeping it under the rug so she didn’t have to deal with it
@imnotreal6275 the grandma is wrong for forcing her opinions on young Heidi, yes, but we are all fallible human beings. A person's response to pain can differ: the grandmother tried to avoid it but clearly never moved on from it as it was too painful to mention both the loss and the failure to exact justice for her daughter, while Heidi sought to overcome it, no matter how long it took. There could be other considerations too, such as financial reasons for not pursuing the case, societal standards for women back when, old age, etc.
I love the way your channel shows the story by the victims point of view in an very respectful, empathetic nice way. I always end your videos feeling inspired by the strenght these victms have/had. Thank you for your work!
The pain of being forced to forget is something I hate Heidi felt. Mourning and grief are slippery, neverending slopes. Talking about your deceased loved one hurts, especially if they died unnaturally. But, coming from someone who was forced to forget; Don't stop talking about them. Even if it hurts, and you do more crying than talking. Even if you get angry, and if you can't remember much. Don't stop talking. Because while you still remember, young kids like Heidi genuinely forget. Young kids like I was genuinely forget, and we can't get those memories back.
It’s so sad that the grandparents were probably so ashamed of Loretta for being an unwed mother back then. I believe they didn’t want that to be publicized for their reputation.
What makes you say that? What evidence is there in this video that they were ashamed of their daughter? And given that she was murdered, it was certainly publicized anyway that she was a single mother. Finally, it was the 70s, not the 30s or 50s.
@@spencerfrankclayton4348 Some maybe. But you can't assume without any reason that Loretta's parents were like this. It totally comes out of the blue. To make such an assessment without any reason, you must be assuming that all families were like this at the time.

That’s what I was thinking. How was she smiling in the that picture? No matter what habit I have I or if someone told me to, I could never smile at my own mother’s crime scene.
@UnicornLover101 She is smiling in the photo because she was 4. A child that young may know something is wrong but they can't understand and comprehend the situation.

@@nooraqueen2716 What? How was the grandmother covering for him????? He was arrested at the time, there just wasn't enough evidence. What a 4 yo had seen was presumably not considered reliable enough to go to trial (assuming even that she was still remembering it and could testify, as the grandmother saying "my granddaughter said after the murder that it was Tom" would have been an hearsay). I guess that you think that she "didn't want justice" because she tried to discourage her granddaughter to focus too much on the crime? I assume that she thought that her granddaughter needed to move on, which doesn't strike me as necessarily bad advice. Doesn't mean that she didn't want justice for her daughter.

Heidi seems like such a sweet woman. My heart breaks for her. Justice came very late in this case, but it's a relief that it has finally been solved. It's so painful to think of the fact that she wasn't allowed to talk about her mother, and that her grandmother hid away her diary that contained important details.
What an amazing little girl, and she's grown into such a sweet, lovely woman! Such a sad story, my heart breaks for Heidi and all of Loretta's family 💜 Heidi has done her mother proud though, what an incredible ending! And Mr. Brewer, a true hero detective!
I think it’s important for adults to encourage children to talk about the person they lost. Whether they have lost a family member through trauma, violence or just natural circumstances, staying quiet it the worse thing you can do. Talking about it helps the mind heal & keeps their loved ones memory alive & active their minds. Watching videos is another good way for kids to remember a parent, grandparent or sibling. It helps them remember how they looked or what they sounded like. When they are older as an adult, they will have vivid memories of their time together & will remember detail of things they did together.

I cant believe they missed all that to begin with, well done to the grandma who wrote everything down just in case, I'm glad they found him and put him away eventually
I don't think that they missed anything, in fact. They arrested him, they just didn't have enough evidences to go to trial. Presumably the testimony of a 4 yo was considered too unreliable (assuming even that she hadn't already forgotten about it and could testify), and even though he was recognized by the 10 yo he assaulted, there was no evidence that it was the same guy who did the assault and the murder. And since someone remembered about the name written in blood, it means that this too was known back then. It seems to me that the new enquirers just rediscovered the same evidences already know at the time and wouldn't have been able to do anything this time around, either, if he hadn't spilled the beans himself.
@olivierdastein2604 well hopefully it was that and they didn't just go nah cba, cause they have been known to do that too. Either way it sucks though, especially when you know who it is and they don't get caught for years
its crazy that this one crime that took like 2 minutes to make took about 50 years to solve, and its crazy that this man survived for so long without getting arrested how come ive never heard of this until now..
This made me cry sad and happy tears. What an amazing lady Loretta must have been to not only stifle the screams of fear and pain to save her daughters life, but to think of writing the name in blood. Let me tell you as a mother I'd like to think I'd do the same thing, but primal instinct takes over and when that urge to survive kicks in, it's really hard to curb it. So hats off to her, she done what she needed to do and it's only fitting that the child she fought so hard to protect would be the one to fight so hard for justice! I'm so glad Heidi had that little spark she inherited from her mother to keep going and make sure that horrible old perverted scumbag got what he deserved.
Her grandma probably scared when Tom attacked the wrong kid and feared for her granddaughter's safety. Hence why she kept telling her granddaughter to let go but still kept everything written down and collect every piece of news. Thankfully she kept the box and didn't throw it away. I guess she herself cannot let it go even though she adviced her granddaughter to do so.
@Unseen You're the only narrator i can listen to your voice and still stay interested in the story. Your voice is not distracting thank God! Finally a bearable storyteller that's human not a BOT. 🎉
How amazing. She should be so proud of the mother. What a great woman. And a daughter ended up being fantastic to. You have such a great channel. You make tv level quality crime documentaries
What an amazing story of love that reaches beyond the grave. I can hardly fathom that her mom was able to go against every instinct and die silently and not fight back! True love!

There's zero reason to believe that she kept it a secret, especially since she even wrote it down. Presumably her detailed notes about what her granddaughter had said were precisely intended to inform the police. The files were lost, so we don't know what the police was told at the time, but the guy was arrested, so presumably they knew.
Im thankful stories like these are brought to light, and many can & are solved. I’d like to know what person put this once innocent & traumatized child in a photo at the crime scene; beyond disturbing.
The neighbor that was asked to watch the dogs was absolutely brilliant/awesome!!! She became a detective asap and asked the questions & in the right way and got the confession to solve the murder that they would’ve never had enough evidence for PERIOD! Mom wasn’t hiding evidence that they would’ve been able to use back then. She saved evidence to bring future forensics & detectives to solve this case & bring that horrendous POS to justice!!
I know that different people react differently to crimes like this but her mother not wanting to pursue justice blows me away. Her sister said she has mixed feelings and that her Mom just wanted her sister to rest in peace. I don't believe that would be possible for a murder victim to rest in peace if their murderer is never caught. Also, this very young child found her mother murdered, covered in blood! Why wouldn't anyone in the family realize that this would be devastating for her and get her help?
I feel so bad for this woman having to bury her mother twice just to try and get justice for her slain mother and her family was horrible for telling her to let her mother's murder go. She witnessed it with her own eyes, shame on them. My heart goes out to Heidi. ❤
Yeah, that’s what I wanna know! Also, I wonder if it was the grandmother that took the picture of the victim’s daughter at the crime scene… Knowing there were no crime scene pics… all the information she saved for later …maybe the grandmother was scared of saying something… so strange tho🥺
Since someone who remembered it told the police, the letters in blood thing was known at the time, so the cops were aware of it back then. But two letters in blood aren't an evidence that a specific person committed the murder.
Very good documentary and I am glad he has finally been brought to justice . The victims daughter was so determined to solve the case and definitely achieved that . RIP

When Heidi said her mother told her to go to her room and don't come out no matter what you hear is exactly what I said to my children when I was being tortured by my then husband. God Bless you 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 daughter and detective
I need to understand why they would take a picture of Heidi at the crime scene?! Thats just insanity.
Manifestation of how they handled the whole damn case - sloppy af
Thought family took picture.
thats actually decent detective work.. she was there.. they did everything via paper and by hand back then.. and think about it.. they still had the right guy..
Agree!!
It’s really sinister and sad.
This goes to show you what a mother's love can do. It is so powerful, that she protected her baby girl form imminent threat. Truly tragic and sad. May she rest in peace. Thank goodness this monster is behind bars.🙏💔
Too bad her mother's parents did nothing to help solve the case or help Heidi cope.
Wow. Loretta is nothing short of a legend.
I don’t know if Heidi will ever see this, but yes. Your mom is now finally resting in peace AND know she has and always will watch over you from the heavens as your guardian angel.
@@claraitawanga8353 not the time or the place for this kind of comment
She's the standard mother. If she's a legend then every single mother who's ever protected their child(ren) is a legend. That includes mother bears. My mother (as manipulative of a human being she is) and I'm sure your mothers would've done the same thing, short of defending themselves and fighting off the killer.
Amen 🙏

I don't usually cry over things, I watch and read a lot of true crime stuff.. this one had me teary eyed. That poor mom knew what was coming and did what she could to protect her kid and get justice. That takes guts and strength. Glad to hear justice has finally happened
I'm exactly the same way, it never usually gets me like this story got me. What an amazing mother Loretta was, I'm so glad her daughter fought for justice.
How she made her clothes and dolls:"(
So glad they finally got him!!!!
What a disturbing story, Bless that child. I hope she is okay now
I doubt that she will ever really be "okay". But hopefully, she's learned how to live with something that horrific. It's all she really can do really.🤷🏻♂️
Ya. She may not be able to forget what happened to her, but I hope she is doing fine right now.
I agree. If that happened to me I would never forget it
There’s a great Tv show about this murder on ID. It’s Cold Case Files, Season 2, Episode 19.
She did well. The scenes from childhood never go away u just learn to deal with them.
That’s a helluva mother right there.
To silently just take being stabbed a ton, all to save her baby.🥺
That’s hero level.
But the grandmother could’ve told the cops what her granddaughter was saying.
That's so messed up
when someone i'm close to leaves/dies, i remember this random quote "don't be sad because it ended, be happy because it happened." (r.i.p for your mother
I know its crazy
The pain of being forced to forget is something I hate Heidi felt. Mourning and grief are slippery, neverending slopes. Talking about your deceased loved one hurts, especially if they died unnaturally.
But, coming from someone who was forced to forget;
Don't stop talking about them.
@@olivierdastein2604 Some families were still like that in the 70s.
@@spencerfrankclayton4348 Some maybe. But you can't assume without any reason that Loretta's parents were like this. It totally comes out of the blue. To make such an assessment without any reason, you must be assuming that all families were like this at the time.
@@olivierdastein2604 We don't know for sure, of course. But I'd say that the 70s were the last decade in which society (in general) looked down on that. Nowadays it's mainly religious society that disapproves.
@@olivierdastein2604 It's a good guess. They were in Utah.
This is by far the best true crime channel on the site. It doesn’t glorify the killer in any way like a majority of other channels do. It gives great accounts of the survivors and gets you to empathize with them.
That photograph is disturbing. Heidi standing there at her mother's bloody crime scene, while smiling is haunting. That means whoever took that picture told her to smile out of a sick cliche or force of habit.
Eerie.
That’s what I was thinking. How was she smiling in the that picture?
No matter what habit I have I or if someone told me to, I could never smile at my own mother’s crime scene.

@UnicornLover101 She is smiling in the photo because she was 4. A child that young may know something is wrong but they can't understand and comprehend the situation.

they could have just asked her to stand there for the camera and she smiled automatically as kids often do for adults taking photos of them.
shout out to the neighbor as well, managing to just casually have a talk and getting a full on confession like a detective
He lived till 70 years old, mom got killed at age 23 , daughter lost her mom at age 4, her whole entire life was ruined, he at 70 lived a full life got caught had not much to loose so it was not justice
Exactly the grandmother is disgusting something tells me she’s behind it all , how she was covering for him , why wouldn’t you want to get Justice for your daughter, it’s like she never wanted him to be jailed
@@nooraqueen2716 exactly!!!
Exactly that wasn't Justice at all The Grandmother Knew all along
@@olivierdastein2604 if the granddaughter knew who murdered her mother regardless if she wanted her to move on or not she should’ve said something to the police its horrible advice
I can't imagine what she went through seeing her mom like that and how it effected her. I watched my aunt pass away when I was 14 and my mother in-law passed on mine and my husband anniversary 5 years ago it takes a toll on your mental health
The fact she stayed quiet is so sad but really makes her a legendary hero and she write his name YES MAMA👏🏾. Thank God the daughters never gave up, it's crazy no evidence and some how from peoples dedication it came together. Rip.
I’m just a kid but I’m so proud of Heidi . Everyone wanted her to give up but she didn’t. To me it looks like the police didn’t even try to solve the case . The evidence was right in their faces.
Loretta is incredible. Thank you for being the epitome of the most loving, brave, and protective a mother could ever be. And thank you to Heidi for being the same but as a daughter.
So emotional . So happy that Heidi found the resolution she wanted after all those years 🤗
Heidi seems like such a sweet woman. My heart breaks for her. Justice came very late in this case, but it's a relief that it has finally been solved. It's so painful to think of the fact that she wasn't allowed to talk about her mother, and that her grandmother hid away her diary that contained important details.
What a wonderful daughter and a magnificent police officer. They were meant to team up. So glad justice was served!
If he attacked another little girl , he was after Heidi.
Her mother saved her life.
Her mother must be so proud of the woman she's become .
The drawing got me in tears, God's house and my mom, this is the ultimate purity, pure heart grieving the great loss of a great love, and I am 54 years old man from the heart of the middle east, men do not tear here, we were raised to be strong men, this got me hard! Bless her heart and may she find everlasting love and peace
There's nothing weak about a kind heart. Thinking that is part of what turns so many men into far worse than beasts.
Man.. cases where people manage to get full confessions out of the blue astound me. I wouldn't be able to keep my cool like that.
How does all evidence from a cold case just disappear?! That sounds shady as hell. I get sometimes things can get lost to the years (which is still unacceptable) but every single piece the police had is absolutely mind boggling
Beautiful story. I wished all the families of unsolved murder victims would have that justice one day ❤
What a horrifying story with an incredible outcome! What's done in the dark, always comes to light. I'm so glad Heidi got justice for her mother. ❤
Rest in peace Ms. Loretta. You raised a very smart girl which brought our killer to justice and her tenacity is an inspiration to us all.
Wow the amazing incompetence of the initial investigation, if they find a murder victim was trying to write something in their own blood and the “cops “just ignored that!!!!!
This is one of the best Crime channels I’ve watched so far thank you for explaining what’s going on and not being so overly loud during it or long exaggerated sentences your channel is great keep up the good work
REALLY GREAT NARRATOR, NOT JUST IN TELLING THE FACTS OF THE STORY BUT WORDING EVERYTHING POWERFULLY AND EVOKING CONNECTION AND EMOTION FROM THE LISTENER. GREAT WORK.
So heartbreaking 💔 😢 So victorious!! That little girl grew up without her momma and fought the fight to see justice for her momma! And that childhood friend turned detective is a HERO! GOD BLESS HIM!
😢🙏 my daughter's name is Heidi as well 1970 she was born in 77 sending prayers to family .
I feel so heartbroken for this little girl who lost her mom in such a horrific manner. But I am so glad that her friend, David didn’t just listen to her story and chose not to do anything about it. I am so happy she finally got the justice for her mom and this family can heal from the tragedy knowing this monster is behind bars.
Congratulations to that Police Officer for helping Heidi to get him locked up! ❤️
I'm glad Detective Brewer listened and pursued resolution in this case.
Behind the dark side of the case being discussed.
I want to thank Unseen for providing subtitles in all the videos, it means a lot to someone like me who can't understand conversations just by hearing lol
William, you do such a great job narrating. The research is very well done also. This is the dynamic I groove with. Keep it up!

I wish this can happen for me, JUSTICE amen. Both my parents were murdered and I still need closure.
I truly pray and hope you get the same justice and peace also. I do believe these people will pay the price whether it's when they're alive or after they're dead. I wish you the very best.
Oh my love! That is horrible. Prayers to you bby ❤️🙏
I am so moved by this story and I am incredible proud of Heidi! - This video is amazing.
Either way it sucks though, especially when you know who it is and they don't get caught for years
@@dark_baphomet the grandma wasn't helping at all becauce she don't tell the police and keep telling the daughter to forget all of it
Well done to the grandma? Bitch shouldve spoken up instead of insisting of forgetting.
What a devoted daughter. I'm sure her mom would be proud.
its crazy that this one crime that took like 2 minutes to make took about 50 years to solve, and its crazy that this man survived for so long without getting arrested how come ive never heard of this until now..
The officer/detective is such an angel for helping her out
AMAZING!!! What a woman. So proud of her for not giving up. Good on her friend who opened the case!!!!
I love this channel. You take these dark grim tragic stories and twist it into hope and triumph. I think that is great!

It's hard enough losing your mom....I couldn't imagine not even knowing who did it 💔
What an amazing story of love that reaches beyond the grave. I can hardly fathom that her mom was able to go against every instinct and die silently and not fight back! True love!
What an amazing mother and daughter pair, love is ETERNAL! ❤️🙏💞
The fact she said goodbye to this earth, swallowing the screams of her own murder, protecting her child from the same fate😔says everything one needs to know❣️ about the love between a parent and child........RIP Miss Loretta 🥲 you birthed a soul as beautiful ,strong and tenacious as YOU!!!!

That neighbor recording Tom admit what he did is heroic, she’s the real MVP of this story.
Now she can’t even get closure because her grandmother isn’t around for her to ask why she kept this a secret!!! This is so terrible!
So the grandmother knew all along and didn't say anything wtf!
I know right? I just left the same comment....what they actual hell ⁉️⁉️⁉️⁉️⁉️
And then told Loretta's CHILD to just
.. forget about her mom getting murdered????
I feel so bad for this woman having to bury her mother twice just to try and get justice for her slain mother and her family was horrible for telling her to let her mother's murder go. She witnessed it with her own eyes, shame on them. My heart goes out to Heidi. ❤
The neighbours interrogating of Tom was amazing. Like proper detective work. Not putting words in his mouth. That was amazing
Why didn't the cops see the name in blood? And why was she posing for a picture at her mom's crime scene?
That’s what I wanna know. Why was she in the home at that time and who made her take that photo?
Yeah, that’s what I wanna know! Also, I wonder if it was the grandmother that took the picture of the victim’s daughter at the crime scene… Knowing there were no crime scene pics… all the information she saved for later …maybe the grandmother was scared of saying something… so strange tho🥺
Since someone who remembered it told the police, the letters in blood thing was known at the time, so the cops were aware of it back then. But two letters in blood aren't an evidence that a specific person committed the murder.
@olivierdastein2604 Sure, they wouldn't try to convict on such flimsy evidence, but maybe a good place to start?
Very good documentary and I am glad he has finally been brought to justice . The victims daughter was so determined to solve the case and definitely achieved that . RIP
A Hero is someone who gives their own life for the preservation of another. Heidis' mom is the true definition of the word, she died a terrible and painful death, in silence, to save the life of her child.
Love this channel. Been binging for days. Sad but also intriguing. Love these family members being so strong and standing up for their loved ones.
This story was truly a good one. It's sad that Hydie lost her mother in this horrific manner. But she never gave up on justice for her. God bless you Hydie
When Heidi said her mother told her to go to her room and don't come out no matter what you hear is exactly what I said to my children when I was being tortured by my then husband. I didn't want anything to happen to them because I didn't know what my then husband might do to them. So I completely understand where Loretta was in her mind...protection at any cost. I finally escaped and married a wonderful man.
I’m sorry that that happened to you but very happy you managed to escape and make a new life. Good luck to you. 😊
This story was absolutely heartbreaking but at the same time so very beautiful it was the ending that made my heart melt 🙏

That is so sad that her grandmother couldn't compose herself enough for her granddaughter. She isn't the only one suffering the loss. She is a little girl who lost her mother. How on earth can you tell her to "let it go"
You cant replace a life priceless
Because it seemed to the grandmother that it was the best for her, presumably, and that she needed to move on.
It makes me think that the grandmother was also an emotionally-repressed person, didn't know how to deal with her own grief, and it also didn't occur to her that she could grieve with her granddaughter.
Just sold a car to Heidi and her husband recently. Its amazing to meet these people in person, knowing their story, and having somewhat of an idea of what they've gone through, and seeing them still stay positive and happy. A lot of respect goes out to this woman
Narration on point. Absolutely essential for true crime genre
“Some heroes wear capes, mine wears Kevlar” is such a powerful quote
Awww this is just beautiful, good on her fighting so hard. Can't believe no one listened and yet the grandma wrote so much down..Honestly that is just mind blowing.
They seem to have listened, they even arrested the guy. But "my 4 yo granddaughter said that it was Tom" wasn't enough to go to trial.
