Jon, just coming to this now. Truly wonderful little film. Both visual quality and story. Thank you. I'm amazed you got that quality wide open. I tried my Canon 50 on my Lumix and while it was nice, I think I had more haze wide open at 1.8. Although the sharpness (or maybe "soft sharpness") was about the same. A bit soft for stills, but fine for motion. My feeling is that I shall look for an FD and have more control. Then debate the speed booster for angle of view correction.
Hey man, great vid. I just bought a complete adapter for my 50mm Canon and 17-50 Sigma but I keep getting these jumpy frames every couple of minutes. Sometimes the aperture doesn't open or close fully then it just clicks and the screen jumps for a couple of frames. In the instructions it says to set the aperture to Priority or else "Release shutter without lens" (not sure what that means). Have you had any issues with that? I've also tried "shoot without lens on and off but no luck
Hi there, That sounds very annoying ,I haven't had this issue as yet are you using this with the Gh4 ? the only thing I will say is that I haven't set my gh4 to any special settings whilst using the adapter I just set to manual focus and full manual exposure control . I also note that you say this happens every couple of minuets , I don't think iv recorded any individual vid clip for that length of time -I'll do a few tests to see If I can simulate this problem. cheers jon
Great Video! I am currently trying the same combo. One question: Manual Focus is not working as it is "by wire" with the 50 mm 1.8 STM lens. How were you able to adjust focus manually ? DId you use an older version of the Canon 50mm ef 1.8 STM ?
Hi there , thanks ! , yep sorry I have the old 'nifty fifty' which is purely mechanical focus so your new style STM wont electronically focus with this adapter . cheers Jon
Exist many versions of commlite adapters, please could you tell us wich one are you using in this video? Thanks! The amazon link could be great! And maybe, have you test this one with Canon EF-S lenses?
hi there . this is the version I'm using , it works very well with my panasonic gh4 but the olympus omd doesn't like it ! cheers j www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01KLLA4OY/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482106298&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=commlite+canon+m43&dpPl=1&dpID=51J7U7H3kTL&ref=plSrch.
Hey! I know nothing of cameras, but i am very interested in this setup. Can you please spell out the name of the adapter as a reply to this comment? the link does not work for me. I would love a reply since i have the same problem, as a non-knower. too much to chose from ;-)
I'm thinking about getting the Canon 50mm for my GH5 + Metabones for low light, just can't decide whether f/1.4 or the cheaper f/1.8. I kind of figure that the f/1.4 + speedbooster will be too hard to focus anyway, so might as well get the f/1.8?
hi there . If your budget can stretch go for the metabones + sigma18-35mm f1.8 its a fantastic low light combo on gh5 especially now that the ois is in body . 👍
Hey thanks for the recommendation, at this point I am using a Canon 17-55mm 2.8 essentially trading 1 stop for OIS which doesn't bother me too much. Was just looking at the 50mm 1.8 as it's a couple of hundred bucks and pretty small and light
If you're between the 1.8 and the 1.4, go with the 1.8 and save money for your next lens. I literally couldn't tell the difference when watching tons of comparison videos between the 1.8, 1.4, 1.2.
A Canon EF 50mm f1.8 or a Panasonic 25mm f1.7?? Which one is better for a Lumix G7? I’m thinking of buying a third lens for my camera but I can’t decide which. Can you help me? THANKS 🙏🏻
Thanks for your video.. is this the STM version of the Canon lens? I got the Canon 50mm f1.8 STM lens and a speedbooster and though the auto focus works when I put my panasonic g85 camera into manual focus mode (and set the switch on the Canon lens to 'MF') turning the focus ring on the lens does nothing... The focus doesn't change and the lens doesn't move in and out to focus (as it does in AF mode).. is this your experience too? Thanks for any feedback
so that lens is like fly by wire so it needs power with the adapter so it wont work if the camera is off or no power is supplied to the camera via lens connection pins
But he's using a speed booster (as opposed to a simpler mount adapter), which corrects for the crop factor using a lens. Most correct in the 0.7x range, if memory serves.
Thanks David ! the nd filter I use is by Hoya and bargains can be found now check out amazon here .. www.amazon.co.uk/Hoya-Variable-Density-Screw-Filter/dp/B007RLR79C -the 52mm version is very reasonable cost , the canon 'nifty 50' lens is unbelievable glass for the price when you consider the filter is around the same cost . I also bought the Commlite through Amazon . I always use manual focus for video with focus peaking but one downside of the canon 50mm is the focus ring -its pretty awful ! also focus peaking can be hard work with the small screen and doesn't always show peaking if your shooting flat profile (as in cinelike D setting on GH4) . cheers jon
Hey, i have a question regarding the lens. I just purchased the exact same lens and mounted it to my lumix g6, but i can't set the aperture. It always stays on f0.0 Could you tell me how to change it? I just have a generic adapter, as a pure beginner i try to keep it as cheap as possible. Thank you so much in advance!
Hi Know it sounds like a stupid question but can u use manual focus with this adapter and a 50mm 1.8 stm? Just that at the moment i have a 'dumb' adapter and manual focus doesnt work. Thanks
its fly by wire focusing for the stm lens wont work unless there is power to the lens via lens connection pins....i love canon but hate fly by wire focusing for this lens haha
Thanks! the GH4 profile is Cinelike D but I pull the saturation and sharpness down to -3 even in this profile . Grading is done on sony vegas with very basic settings , mainly using color curves and bit of contrast . cheers !
I bought commlite for my g85, but, unfortunately, it doesn't fit good with all lenses. It doesn't have any stabilization with 50 1.8, but it works well with my samyang 8 mm and Canon 15-85 mm.
Wow.. This is so cool. I was expecting huge edm music but this is another level of peace ambient. Love it.
Here it’s 2024 and this camera and along with the gh5 are still beast !
Beautiful! I’ll never get rid of my Gh4 .. Extra B roll camera .
Great footage

well done video....supplied with all the info about lens and settings.....very nice.
Thanks very much Rusty !

what happen in OMD body??

Looks good! Is that lens good for manual focus in video? I don't like Panasonic's electronic manual focus system
winter777 Yes, like old lenses

Wow this works great beautiful video .
Was this the normal aspect ratio for 4k out of the G4? Looks nice and wide. Or did you crop some?
oops, I meant GH4, sorry
Did you use a Commlite Cm-ef-eos M - Lens Mount Adapter?
A Canon EF 50mm f1.8 or a Panasonic 25mm f1.7?? Which one is better for a Lumix G7? I’m thinking of buying a third lens for my camera but I can’t decide which. Can you help me? THANKS 🙏🏻

Have you problems with autofocus using That adapter? Thanks :-)
that means the 50mm would be a 100mm on the GH4 right with this adapter?
AlgerieHD yarp
AlgerieHD i think it would be more like 80-85mm
But he's using a speed booster (as opposed to a simpler mount adapter), which corrects for the crop factor using a lens. Most correct in the 0.7x range, if memory serves.
So Cinematic.. it's like an ALEXA Mini
awesome vid. can you share a link for the commlite and the ND Filter - thx! And I guess you're manually focusing and using focus peaking?
Thanks David ! the nd filter I use is by Hoya and bargains can be found now check out amazon here .. www.amazon.co.uk/Hoya-Variable-Density-Screw-Filter/dp/B007RLR79C -the 52mm version is very reasonable cost , the canon 'nifty 50' lens is unbelievable glass for the price when you consider the filter is around the same cost . this lens definitely makes the GH4 more filmic rather than videoy.
how are you getting autofocus filming 1080p with the GH4
Hey, i have a question regarding the lens. I just purchased the exact same lens and mounted it to my lumix g6, but i can't set the aperture. It always stays on f0.0
Could you tell me how to change it? I just have a generic adapter, as a pure beginner i try to keep it as cheap as possible.
Thank you so much in advance!
having the same problem currently. I think the lens need electronic communication to work
If by "generic adapter" you mean a low cost "dumb" one, then that is the reason. He is using a more costly "speed booster" with many added features.
autofocus is not supported? what other cheap adapter work with AF?
Can you tell me what variable ND you're using?
Hi Know it sounds like a stupid question but can u use manual focus with this adapter and a 50mm 1.8 stm? Just that at the moment i have a 'dumb' adapter and manual focus doesnt work.
Thanks
its fly by wire focusing for the stm lens wont work unless there is power to the lens via lens connection pins....i love canon but hate fly by wire focusing for this lens haha
Great video and adorable dogs!! What picture profile r u using btw? How intense was your color grading?
Thanks! the GH4 profile is Cinelike D but I pull the saturation and sharpness down to -3 even in this profile . Grading is done on sony vegas with very basic settings , mainly using color curves and bit of contrast . cheers !
+jon knowler thanks for the reply, looks awesome!! Keep up the good work and take care of those pups :)
is gh4 camera really compatible with canon lenses?????
What are your camera settings?
Hi Jon,
Did the AF works on Commlite?
yeah i have the same question too.
***** Mark Vincent Arcilla Based on my research, the AF doesnt work. If you want cheaper focal reducer, try KIPON,
Does commlite also increases aperture like metabones speedbooster does?
hi Ian. Unfortunately not , that is a very tempting bonus of the metabones speedbooster ! 👍
+jon knowler indeed. This video is really good though, makes me want to get one too , so i cud use my ef lenses. Thnx for the info.
I bet you'd like the Aputure LensRegain. =)
Nice Lense, Nice Cam, Nice Cairn!
Thanks for your nice feedback ! Tommy the Cairn is a right little sod ! cheers jon
is the video still decent handheld?
Which is the adaptor? I can find one that works and affordable too
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01KLLA4OY/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482106298&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=commlite+canon+m43&dpPl=1&dpID=51J7U7H3kTL&ref=plSrch
the link does not work for me, can you write out the name of the adaptor please? :-)
Will the focus peaking work with the commlite adapter?
hi . yes the focus peaking works on the gh4 /commlite without issues . it also works on the olympus as long as your set to manual focus .👍
Thanks for the fast answer Jon!
no problem . all best .
commlite adapter is compatible to Lumix G85???
yep, all mft mount cameras from panasonic and olympus
Which one should i get with this lense specificly?
I bought commlite for my g85, but, unfortunately, it doesn't fit good with all lenses. It doesn't have any stabilization with 50 1.8, but it works well with my samyang 8 mm and Canon 15-85 mm.
nicely done
thanks Brandon !
great video
shutter speed/iso?
what view!
