- I was looking online at picture profiles that people recommended for the Panasonic GH4, when I came across a profile known as Supertone. (See link below)
After further search I found another article listing 6 different looks using the Supertone settings, on a page called Claude Works. (He has called his settings Claudetone) I decided to shoot a test and see what each one looks like.
They are good if you want a look straight out of the camera and you aren't looking to do any colour grading. You can see the results for yourself. I have put the shots up in this video, with the settings I used.
I personally like Portrait and Natural settings, but what settings do you like? Let me know in the comments below.

Why thank you Peter. I'm glad you liked the video. The general consensus is that portrait is the best setting.
I can't really judge anything unless there are skin tones included.
I agree with the other comment, portrait is def the best with the right settings. Great video btw!
Natural is really good in this video he just turned the saturation all the way up to +3
Thanks for doing these tests! When I was messing with my Claudetone experiments, I wanted different looks straight from the camera. I wanted to do less grading. Truth be told? I was trying hard to either A) Get closer to the 5DmkII colors, or B) Get a better look overall. I think Portrait and Natural are the best for this. Although now I feel Natural does not need the contrast boost, and I leave it alone. Generally speaking, adding the hue alone to Natural gives a nice warm image. I am not fond of VLOG, and will be shooting with Leeming settings when grading is more complex.
Hello Supertone !! A cordial greeting from Coquimbo Chile !! Beautiful video, it's just what I was hoping to remotely find someday. I'm starting to use my GH4 and this will help me a lot !! I will tell you about the application and results.
Thank you!!
No worries.
Great comparisons, thanks!
box00 glad you liked them.
Thanks for the comparison - I've been running my own tests based on the 2017 Claudetone profiles and I have a question. Could you explain the reasoning behind Hue=+3 on the Natural and Vivid profiles? I can't help but think the image becomes too magenta. Thanks in advance!
Renos Gavris I was following the settings I found on the Claudetones website, so I don't know why the hue setting is +3. If you search for the Claudetone website, it might explain why he used the settings that he did.
Found it, thank you very much. Unfortunately no explanation is provided on the Hue adjustments, other than going for a "hybrid modern / retro type of look" based on the WB settings too. Personally, I like the natural setting with the hue at 0 or +1. Thanks again for your reply.
Renos Gavris that's a shame. If I can hazard a guess, I would say that he chose those settings as they looked good to his eye. The natural is my favourite as well. When I use the GH4 for photography, natural is the setting I use.
I think it's because the GH4/G7 has a tendency to make skin tones pinkish? So the hue corrects that? Don't you think?
Have you tried Cinelike D with the Leeming lut and his recommendation as far as settings? Just wondering!
The settings for Cinelike D are the same that I use. Though I don't use Leeming LUT as I use Cinelook, which I am very happy using.
Ok, so do you end up using more Cinelike D or Portrait?
Depends. If I know I am going to be grading the footage, then I go with Cinelike D. If I have to deliver the footage straight to the client, then I would use Portrait. Think of the Picture Settings as tools, each one works for the job you have at hand. One isn't better than the other.
Very nice-thanks for the info!!!!
Thanks for that. great job and very helpfull!
Thank you Francesco.
Do you do any grading in post? Have you compared these to v log? Thx
I didn't do any grading to this footage. It's all straight out of the camera. I didn't do a V-Log comparison with this footage. I wanted to test out looks that you could use without grading. I did do a video on V-Log when it came up. You can check it out at ruclips.net/video/scINS2053G0/видео.html
Thanks for that..there are lots of different views on V-log, but this seems a pretty good review and I prefer it than all those superfine settings. Are you going GH5?
Did you ever try standard mode with everything set to zero in the daytime it looks better than supertone it works good at f8 our if you have nd filters even better try it and thank me later. Works great in fields Our where there's plenty of green grass. The gh4 always had problems with trees and grass this profile sorts it.
thanks!!
WB?
Can I use these settings on the GH5 also
ruffdraft don't see why not, but I don't what the results will be like. If you have a GH5, try them out and let me know how they came out.
Agree portrait and natural are best.
Cool. Though I had a play with Cinelike D footage in Davinci Resolve today and I was happy with the results. So if you looking to grade, I can recommend these settings for Cinelike D.
+Independent Runnings I do not like cinelike d - I have had trouble grading it. Vlog L works much better for me to grade but still prefer natural for mist filming.
I have had problems with noise with Vlog L. It's great for shooting outside, but when shooting inside with available light, it's too noisy for my taste. But I will have to try out using natural for mist filming.
+Independent Runnings you are right it needs good light. I have had some problems with banding too.
At the moment the problems outweigh the good with V-Log. Though fingers crossed that Panasonic refine it in future updates, as it has a lot of potential.
