I agree, @T Humphries - nothing wrong with being inconclusive after a test like that. I appreciate the honesty. For me, the extra noise would be not worth any potential improvement. Plus - I tend to leave things stock when possible. I believe engineers do their best to design/produce equipment that will perform well and operate properly over time. Otherwise- the brand name would suffer. Great video, Brock.
I’m pretty sure it runs faster and cooler just by opening up the exhaust. Manufacture is sometimes restrained by regulations that a consumer isn’t. My 500i is matching a 661 in my comparison
Modern Stihl pro saws like 500i, 462, 400, 362, all have hollow mufflers, without internal baffles, so very little to obstruct gases escape route. Also, the exhaust port on the side of the muffler is 60-70 percent of the size of the exhaust port on the cylinder (the ideal ratio of ope sizes) so there is very little to be gained from any muff mod (or Barkbox/straightshot attachment). Need to port them to make major gains.
Thank you…… have a ms460. I always end up cutting big stuff and big leaning stuff that loggers won’t touch. It amazes me how “yeah it’s 20 inches” turns into when I get there holy crap I need a 36 inch bar. Doing research for max flow air filters and the bark box before I pull the trigger. Edit is seems most all times and information about the bark box is inconclusive until you hit big timber. Seems the bark box in conjunction with a filter such as max flow or Egan performance doesn’t make a big difference until you get into seriously big timber. I’ve been on research for this for weeks now. Lol.
I own ALL the WCS accessories on my 500i. Its still UNPORTED. I found that when combined with the billet intake and filter it did make a small increase in power. It was very noticeable once it recalibrated itself, idled very differently differently. However UNPORTED you wont notice a different in small timber like that. Hiw sharp your chain is will be the biggest "horsepower" gain. Its in bigger timber you will notice the differences. I Routinely run a 42' bar with an 8T sprocket on my UNPORTED 500i (with all WCS bolt ons) and it spins the bar no problem, even though everyone on the net says they cant do it unported, yet i cut 40' hardwood stumps no problem. Ultimately these accessories are meant for PORTED 500s
I will add, that I am going to port my 500, it was always the plan, because that's when the muffler really comes into play. But I delayed porting because the muffle plus intake plus suspension kit and clutch cover, dogs made enough of a difference that I could start using 42 inch bars. Porting it wasn't as urgent anymore. But honestly at a minimum you need the billet intake as well if you you want to notice anything unported. The computer can actually use the extra air in and out to add more fuel.
Your suppose to reset/calibrate the saw after a mod like that. I didnt notice you doing that. Takes a about 45 seconds to recalibrate it to that muffler
Can run it 30 second on choke dont touch then after that remove chain break and run full throttle. Sounds bad for abit then will just sing. I did it worked for new 400, an mates 261 thats been bit shit.
@@julianalderson3938 I’m clearly you have no clue what kind of a saw the 500 I is there is no choke it has electronic fuel injection there’s a primer and off that all . Let it run the ecu will update the saw by 5 th cut
The Bark Box might affect fuel consumption. Not positive on that, but it would be something to keep an eye on over time. I noticed that there was some heat marking on your bar. That used to happen to me until I switched to winter bar oil for everything under 70 degrees. It may not make a difference for felling, but for limbing or firewood cutting it helps tremendously. That may be especially true when using your saw as a mill. Great video. You are a hoot sometimes. I love your sense of humor!
More noise = more POWER, not always ;Rite Brock? Besides the "cooling efect" does the "Top fuel Hemi open header sound" BLAST Away the sawdust? I usually "custom tune" my saws with some "handy-dandy" over-drilling on the muffler, always werks good & is cheep. Thanks for the great Video Sir and happy safe slicing & dicing.
I have talked to a few people who drill holes in the muffler and said it works great The only difference here is that it has a screen over the holes Thanks for watching
For some people more noise more power. Just make sure sometime your engine is designed with that muffler restriction and this removal may cause long term problems for your chainsaw. Manufacturers make things to last
People have been straight heading race cars and saws for years, it helps a little. The saw he has is fuel injected, it will tune itself after running for a short time. No carb to play with. I love mine cause I cut from sea level to 3,OOOft and I don’t have to do anything but start it and run it. Take care
My plan was to do a lot of firewood this year but the Quonset hut has pretty much taken up all the time that would’ve went to that I have a few trees down that need processed as soon as I’m done with this Thanks for watching
LOL 🤣. 9:12 "Wow". Are they affiliated with those that made the firewood splitter bit that you tried??? Similar results. Haha, just saying. Keep up the good work.
Thanks. Nothing too impressive here because they claim faster cut times and I’ve seen other videos disapproving there. I was really surprised at how loud it is Thanks for watching
Does anyone have input on fuel consumption? Does bark box improve or make worse? How much louder is it? I do a lot of cutting and am curious of input from hours of use..
Can’t tell you about the fuel consumption but several YT videos say it is much louder than stock with some saying just way too loud. I guess it depends on the user tho……other videos pointed out it that there were no gains and sometimes loses in cut speed. Idk if anyone has done a recalibration properly to see if the fuel injected 500i relearns.
Shit I work in town all the time and run a bark box on my 462 and 500i and never once got a complaint about it being to loud or anything shit before I started running bark boxes we got noise complaints all the time about our equipment being loud and when are you guys gonna be done here it’s so loud but since I put a bark box on my saws it’s like everyone magically started minding there damn business
I'm sure I'll get thumbs down on this I have tried using cheap motor oil for bar oil. The sticky bar oil, is just that, sticky. It combines with wood matter and plugs up the oil hole and fills up the bar rail with sticky gunk making it more difficult for oil to run in the rail. The motor oil seems better and it gets plenty of oil to lubricate with having a continuous supply. Seems to be cleaner than the bar oil and doesn't turn gummy plugging agent. Just my thought.
Yep, it doesn't make a mess because it's not working. It flies off the chain almost straight away because it doesn't stick and doesn't lubricate the bottom of the bar by the dogs where most people cut. Engine oil doesn't have "stickifiers" in it like bar oil does, so it atomizes in the air so that you can breathe it into your lungs and give yourself chemical pneumonia or worse, lung cancer.
Not to long ago "Muffler Mods" were the greatest thing in the world. It involved drilling holes. Greatest thing, even greater then buying, owning and using a saw. Would have been interesting for you to have done the "Muffler Mod" first and compare that also. Those Bark Boxes are expensive, and it is dubious if they do anything more then what you could accomplish with a drill bit.
