    Lyrics :
There were bells on a hill
And I never heard them ringing
I never heard them at all
    Till there was you
There were birds on the hill
But I never saw them winging
I never saw them at all
    Till there was you
Yes,there was music and wonderful roses
They tell me in sweet fragrant meadows of dawn and dew
There was love,it got all around me
And I never heard it singing,singing,singing...
I never heard it at all
    Till there was you...
(and right now starts "Say No More",without a break. They were training right this part of the song during the repetiton in the begining of the video...)

There are musicians, good musicians, very good musicians, excellent musicians, superb musicians, stunningly good musicians, out-of-this-world stupendous musicians; then, there is a big chasm and on the other side is Ray on a level all his own, unattainable to other mere mortals.

I think Ray makes a terrific little change to the lyric: instead of singing “but I never heard them singing” he sings “AND I never heard them singing” It’s only one word but I think it adds drama and energy to the lyric.

Never heard Ray Charles' version of this song before today
    A simple, yet powerful rendering
He had such a way to make a song his own
    Thank you for sharing this!

The writer Victor Hugo said that "melancholy is the happiness of being sad". The truth is that, when we feel melancholic, our mood is often associated with sadness, although what we are remembering are good times from the past, like listening to this beautiful and melancholic song.

You can see the musicians behind him smiling in happy admiration and amazement.
I saw "Ray Charles, Till there was you" and thought....."oh geez what's this going to be like?"
Me of little faith. I should have known he'd somehow stay completely faithful to the original, but voice and harmonise and rhythmically do what can only be called his thing with it.....stunningly beautifully.
I'm continually amazed at how hugely talented he was.

Nobody like him. A colossus. As Willie Nelson said, when singers get together and Ray's in the group we're all competing for second place.

Till There Was You -- RAY CHARLES
Siriusly Sinatra today played my favorite version of TILL THERE WAS YOU - Ray Charles' 1974 recording of the enduring love song written (words & music) by Meredith Willson for his 1957 Broadway show The Music Man.
It was first recorded by a 17-year-old Sue Raney (with a Nelson Riddle arrangement) and Peggy Lee had an early hit with it. Peggy's was the version a young Paul McCartney fell in love with - including his arrangement of the song in the Beatles early repertoire. It was the only Broadway song The Beatles ever recorded.
It really is a great song - regardless of which famous version you enjoy most! But Ray Charles had a way of making a cover of a song, familiar to millions of us, uniquely his own: One reason our favorite singer dubbed Ray “the only true genius in the business.” (The business of singing!)
Just watched for the first time this fascinating 'live in Miami 1999) video at RUclips.
[Wiki notes on the song's history]
The first recording of the song to be released was produced by Nelson Riddle, featuring his orchestra and 17-year-old vocalist Sue Raney. Promotional copies of the 45 rpm single, Capitol P3847, were released on November 26, 1957, even before the Broadway production had premiered on December 19, 1957, and a month ahead of the original cast album . . .
In 1959, American singer Anita Bryant recorded it as a single. Her version reached number 30 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 14 on the Cashbox Top 100 . . .
Paul McCartney was introduced to Peggy Lee's cover of the song through his older cousin, Bett Robbins, who would occasionally baby-sit the two McCartney brothers.[3] McCartney said: "I had no idea until much later that it was from The Music Man."[4] "'Till There Was You" was part of the Beatles' pre-recording repertoire in 1962 and performed at the Star Club in Hamburg.[5] It became illustrative of the Beatles' versatility, proving they could appeal to all sections of an audience, moving easily from softer ballads to harder rock and roll, as in their appearance on November 4, 1963 at the Royal Variety Performance when they followed this song with "Twist and Shout".[6]
The band had included "'Till There Was You" as part of their unsuccessful audition for Decca Records in London on January 1, 1962.[5] It was the second of five songs the group performed during their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964.

The significance of “Till There Was You” in The Beatles' recorded canon appears to be infinitesimally small to most Beatles fans, many not having knowledge of them even recording the song. In fact, some sheet music books which claim to include all of the released Beatles material omit the song, not because of it being a cover song, but simply because they forgot to include it.
The truth of the matter is that the song was a major determining factor in The Beatles being signed to EMI’s Parlophone Records in Britain, thereby catapulting them to fame throughout the world. If it wasn’t for The Beatles adding “Till There Was You” to their repertoire, they no doubt would have had the same fate of most of the ‘beat groups’ of the Liverpool music scene, such as Cass and The Casanovas, Derry and The Seniors and Rory Storm and The Hurricanes.

Oh, there were bells on a hill, yeah
And I never heard 'em ringing
I, I never heard them at all, oh
Till there was you, baby, oh no, oh, no, no
There were birds in the sky
And I never saw them winging, winging
Out at night I never saw them at all
    Till there was you
    Then there was music
    And there was wonderful roses
Y'all tell me that it's sweet fragrant meadows
    Of dawn and dew
There was love, the thing got all around me
And I never heard it singin, oh, singin'
Out at night I never heard anything at all
    Till there was you
    Then there was music
    And wonderful roses
Didn't I say, they tell me in sweet fragrant meadows
    Of dawn and dew
Yes, there was love and it got all around me, baby
And I never heard it singin' , oh, singin'
Out at night, I never heard it at all
    Till there was you

Till There Was You was written by Meridith Willson and not Lennon and McCartney. The Beatles version was also a cover.
