Shirley Jones, so beautiful, Robert preston, he is the quintessential harold hill. Ronny Howard, the best Winthrop ever. This scene always makes me cry and I have seen it too many times to count. Love music man.

    • @grayson1946

It is a shame that the younger generation does know how beautiful love can be between a man and a woman. I like the scene not only for her beautiful singing, but the fact that “Harold” was taken by surprise and was genuinely touched by her love. It made him a changed man. As a man, I will admit that I am a hopeless romantic. Carousel and Oklahoma are also two of my favorite musicals. “If I loved you“ and “ people will say we’re in love “ are two more of my favorite romantic songs.

Cameron Whitten Most pop music these days is just horrible. It's been getting worse for years. Fergie and the like set the tone for more garbage to come out. But honestly it's been getting bad since Britney and JLo. They set to bar so low. The last era of good music ended with Alanis Morissette. By the time Dido and Michelle Branch came out, they were the exception rather than the rule. Most music was already dominated by trash like Ashlee Simpson. Now the music industry has been overtaken by Keshas.

This is not as easy to sing as one might think, with ninth jumps, semitone descents and various tempo changes. It's almost operatic in parts, demanding expressive technique and spot-on intonation. Thankfully, Shirley Jones had the vocal chops to make it seem both natural and simple-the mark of a pro. Fun fact about this scene (taken from IMDb): Shirley Jones learned she was pregnant with her son Patrick once filming had begun. She met with director Morton DaCosta over lunch to inform him of the situation. Her concern was that she would begin "showing" during its filming. He assured her that they could work through it with costumes and also by filming her from the waist up, if necessary. He did have one request, that she tell no one about it. Robert Preston did figure it out before filming had concluded, when Shirley's character, Marian, and his character, Professor Hill, kissed for the first time in the romantic footbridge scene. He leaned in for the kiss and jumped back, asking her, "What was that?" to which she replied, "That is Patrick Cassidy! Say 'Hello!' " Years later, her son Patrick had the opportunity to meet Preston. He walked up and introduced himself saying, "Hello. I'm Patrick Cassidy." Preston replied, "Yes, I know. We've already met."

This song has a fascinating story.
It was written and recorded by Meredith Willson in 1950, and wasn't much noticed. Then he used it in the Music Man, in 1957 on Broadway. That was noticed! It's had many covers--including Paul McCartney and the Beatles--and is now considered one of the most famous Broadway show tunes.

Not only is the song so awesome but the acting is sensational. One of the most poetically beautiful and touching love scenes ever put on film. Brilliant, emotionally naked acting by Preston, with kudos to Jones and especially director DaCosta. We knew RIGHT THEN, that there was no way he was going to leave River City. And, as I have said before, Have you ever seen anything as gentle and moving and POETICALLY MASCULINE, as Preston in this scene?

Shirley Jones...One of the best voices in Hollywood during her time. I always enjoy her musicals. True story--Robert Preston was my father's squadron's operations officer (552nd BS, 9th AF) during WWII. (Dad is on the right in the photo in icon to the left of this post. Photo taken in Paris in 1945).

Can people stop miss using the term “underrated“? That’s probably the most ridiculous comment I’ve ever seen on RUclips. The musical was a blockbuster originally even beating West Side for every award. This film version was immensely successful, and there have been a number of successful tours and revivals of this plus a television version. It is idiotic to suggest that a musical, which has received such acclaim and notoriety is “underrated “
