I was so obsessed with this movie as a child (and still am), I would act this scene out for my grandma every time we watched it. And she sat there and smiled the entire time, rest in peace Grammie ❤️❤️
I find it funny how Liesl sings "timid and shy and scared am I of things beyond my ken." But she is the one who has been trying to kiss Rolf and Rolf is he one who's timid and shy.
@alison Barlow I don't know how old you are, but this is one of those songs that you take literally when you watch it as a child, and then when you're an adult you realize both of them are not what they claim, and the lyrics are ironic. He's putting on a front of knowing what he's doing because he's older, when in reality he's scared to kiss her and has no idea what he's doing. She's putting on a front of being naive and easy for him to make a move on, but the reality is she knows exactly what she's doing and that she's far more mature than him. It's also a reference to traditional male/female social structure, where the men appear to dominate the women, but the women are the ones actually pulling the strings.
Thats the whole irony of the song. It's meant to be ironic in that way. She's the aggressive man and he's the shy girl. But his ego thinks it's the other way around and she's indulging him.
Me at age 7: omg she’s so grown up and pretty! I hope I look like that when I’m her age! That’s totally what 16 year olds look and act like! Me now at age 16: what... is this... Edit: as of today I'm 17. I'm even more confused if thats even possible Edit: I guess this is an annual thing now. 18 and still absolutely lost
He ran away because he wanted to make sure the situation didn't go beyond there. The point of that action was to show that his character was grown up enough to not just get intimate with a girl because she was being forward with him
I never get tired of this favorite scene from one of my favorite movies! Such talent from the lyrics, to the choreography, and the voices. Unmatched! Now, lets talk about Fiddler On The Roof. 😍🤩
Even more realistic because they both think that theyre so high and mighty and wise and "not babies" but you can definitely see the childlikeness in them hehehe
Back then to, women didn't have much say so on their own so they sadly had to pretty much depend on men to get anywhere in life working under them, marrying a particular one, etc.
The whole scene is portrayed as a beautifully innocent moment in time for two teenagers falling in love. She is smitten, as is he, and the song is a tribute to youthful naivete that everyone eventually grows out of at some point. Adults would scoff at the notion that "seventeen-going-on-eighteen" is any wiser than "sixteen-going-on-seventeen," just as they might scoff at the purity of young love like this.
I think that the notion that seventeen is so much wiser than sixteen is silly is kinda the point of the movie. He talks down to her in the song, and later betrays her. I don't see how you get just purity from this song
@@alexschalk5439 They were both being playful - he wasn't actually talking down to her. He says "timid and shy and scared are you" while she's the one who's all over him. He knows she's none of those things, he's just playing. The romance was cute and innocent. He was just swept up by the nationalist propaganda and entirely brainwashed like so many young men. It's a sad and scary commentary on radicalism and the way it corrupts people who are otherwise lovely.
@@abhinavs5213 Look closely. Look at her body language, the way she looks at him with a completely not-innocent expression. She plays along lyrics-wise, but her body language shows the opposite; meaning, her body language shows she's in control the whole time. The actress is very cheeky in this.
As a teen in this age range, I have never noticed how self-aware this song is. I feel so self-concious now because it's clear that neither of them know what they're doing. I am internally screaming.
@@cerebrummaximus3762 @lessismore8533 Specifically he's talking about how he's "older and wiser" than she is, but at this age range, it's less about age in a sense and more about lived experiences. I have a couple of friends that are two years older than me (I'm 18 now) and one of them is about in the same stage of life that I am, except she bought her first car. She basically has little to no clue what she's doing, so I don't usually ask her for advice regarding life. The other one is married with her own apartment. I usually ask HER when I need help with how credit cards work, or ideas for how to pay for college, or realistic estimates on how much rent is on average, or anything like that. 16-18 is a range where a lot happens in a short amount of time. Most people, when they turn 16, are juniors or sophomores in high school. They're kind of just trying to get through life, probably started their first job already if they hadn't two years ago, and are learning to drive. This is also the time that a lot of kids open up their first debit card so they can make purchases online without parental consent. 17 is kind of like 16 except your parents usually let you do more things by yourself. 18 is where you usually start to look for your first full-time job, decide what you want to do for higher education, open your first credit card, and basically start preparing yourself to be on your own. We have proof that Liesel lives with her dad, is probably still going to school, and is VERY wealthy. Making her almost entirely ignorant to how finances work, (although she may not need this information due to the fact that women usually stayed at home to raise children during this time and never needed to work), she's probably not super aware of the rest of the world because she's upper-class, and because somewhat controlling/red-flaggy boyfriend here is a postal boy, she's probably not thinking about the fact that a lot of his interest in her could be related to money. What we know about him is he does have a full-time job. We don't know if he lives on his own, but there's a 50/50 chance he _might._ If this is the case, he may genuinely be a little more experienced and aware of the world than she is, but we don't know for sure. He _might_ be someone who could offer Liesel decent advice on life, however, in this time period he may not have been able to afford higher education due to it majorly being considered an upper-crust luxury, so we actually don't know if he ever graduated or will graduate high school. (He could have a summer birthday.) That being said, assuming that Liesel has received higher education of the time, he would have the street smarts, but likely she's way more aware of what's happening outside of Austria and the war, which would make her much more equipped to run from it. So, there's potential for this dynamic being mutually beneficial, but honestly with the way he's talking there are a lot of... potential red flags. Ya know, "you don't know what you're doing but I can save you!" The fact that Liesel doesn't notice how potentially alarming these statements could be is also a case for how inexperienced she is. He's kind of putting words into her mouth, even though Liesel seems perfectly confident in this song. Notice how she mostly goes along with it to please him? Also just the line, "you *need* someone older and wiser telling you what to do." However, this is making a lot of assumptions. Honestly a lot of that comment was me looking at my behavior as someone of that age. I knew that I wasn't prepared to enter adulthood yet-- heck, I'm still not-- and that the future was zooming toward me like a train. This song is kind of saying they both feel like they know everything, which is common in this age range, while it's clear they haven't had as much lived experience to live up to that statement. I hope that my argument makes sense....
I remember when my mother showed me this. She loves this scene. She would say how she missed how people dressed like this and real people would dance and sing without fake voices.
@@algumacoisa1232 typically when the actor in a movie is autotuned it typically was just the choice of the people editing the music trying to get it "perfect". Take Beauty and the Beast 2017. Emma Watson has a very sweet natural voice, but she was autotuned to sound "perfect". Even Josh Gad, a famous Broadway actor and the voice of Olaf from Frozen, was autotuned and we all know he can sing

When life gives you 100 reasons to cry show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile. And this scene right here is a heck of a good reason to smile! :-)
The message of the scene was that she was young and innocent, and wasn't aware of the dangers of just falling in love with a man and going for him. Watch how he refuses her several attempts at making the situation intimate. He's not being a dick in this scene, he does love her but knows that she is too young for them to do anything. Him being a year older does mean something - it implies that he's older so he can better understand the gravity of his decisions.
@@dutchik5107 Wrong. Girls mature in specific ways sooner than boys. That has nothing to do with how naive an individual is. In this case, the character was very naive and vulnerable to men who had enough charm, money and power. It was supposed to show that she needed to take more care.
@@akaneriyun4774 I am well aware. This is set in WW2 where Captain Von Trapp is called to serve for the Nazi army - which he then runs away from with his family and they escape into Switzerland. Just because that is what the character does later in the story, does not mean that the lesson being taught here is any less valid.

She is dancing in the bandage. she received a pain injection and was able to complete the scene with a bandage which was removed in post production. You can see it tho, one of her ankles is clearly larger than the other..

I find it funny how Liesl sings "timid and shy and scared am I of things beyond my ken." But she is the one who has been trying to kiss Rolf and Rolf is he one who's timid and shy.
Maybe he just doesn't want to knock her up before she's even 17. Gotta take things slow you know.
Exactly! Plus he was the one who ran away after they kissed-- not her
I think that's the "beauty" of it. It was all upside down after all
@alison Barlow I don't know how old you are, but this is one of those songs that you take literally when you watch it as a child, and then when you're an adult you realize both of them are not what they claim, and the lyrics are ironic.

I love how realistic this is. Guys be a year older and turning 18 and they think the girl is a baby.
Even more realistic because they both think that theyre so high and mighty and wise and "not babies" but you can definitely see the childlikeness in them hehehe
I've had way more experience with girls who do that. Even if I'm 9 months younger they say I'm too young.
TheGuyWhoIsAustralian because it feels so
Back then to, women didn't have much say so on their own so they sadly had to pretty much depend on men to get anywhere in life working under them, marrying a particular one, etc.
hahahaha Lady
The whole scene is portrayed as a beautifully innocent moment in time for two teenagers falling in love. She is smitten, as is he, and the song is a tribute to youthful naivete that everyone eventually grows out of at some point. Adults would scoff at the notion that "seventeen-going-on-eighteen" is any wiser than "sixteen-going-on-seventeen," just as they might scoff at the purity of young love like this.
Which gets proven as childish later in the story when he betrays her and her family.
It's fun, definitely "exciting & new"
I think that the notion that seventeen is so much wiser than sixteen is silly is kinda the point of the movie.
It is brilliant wit

May you explain more? I’m intrigued
I just entered this age range, please explain!
Just pick one of the two original genders and you’ll be ok
@@cerebrummaximus3762 @lessismore8533
Specifically he's talking about how he's "older and wiser" than she is, but at this age range, it's less about age in a sense and more about lived experiences.
Also just the line, "you *need* someone older and wiser telling you what to do."
However, this is making a lot of assumptions.
SAME HELP
I remember when my mother showed me this. She loves this scene. She would say how she missed how people dressed like this and real people would dance and sing without fake voices.
Ironic since a decent amount of the actors don't even sing and are voiced over, like captain von Trapp for example:)
@@sethlishman but the ones who sang it didn't used auto tune like most people now days
@@algumacoisa1232 people also auto tune wayyyy more than you think you do. Chances are, you don't actually mind auto tuning, you mind when it's obvious.
@@zoe_moth the amount of pitch correction - sometimes to notes that aren't even written - in that movie is so disappointing
When life gives you 100 reasons to cry show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile. And this scene right here is a heck of a good reason to smile! :-)
he’s literally one year older, why is he acting like he’s her dad😂😂
The message of the scene was that she was young and innocent, and wasn't aware of the dangers of just falling in love with a man and going for him. Watch how he refuses her several attempts at making the situation intimate. He's not being a dick in this scene, he does love her but knows that she is too young for them to do anything. Him being a year older does mean something - it implies that he's older so he can better understand the gravity of his decisions.
@@redd_cat eventho ya know. Girls mature faster than boys....
@@redd_cat, funnily enough, he ends up going Nazi on all of the Von Trappe.
