Rodgers & Hammerstein's® cinematic treasure, “The Sound of Music” is the winner of five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture. In this true-life story, Julie Andrews lights up the screen as Maria, a spirited young Austrian woman who leaves the convent to become a governess for Captain von Trapp’s (Christopher Plummer) seven unruly children. Her charm and songs soon win the hearts of the children - and their father. But when Nazi Germany unites with Austria, Maria is forced to attempt a daring escape with her new family.

Just realizing how the story of the lonely goatherd mirrors the movie’s plot. The lonely goatherd (a lonely man - Captain Von Trapp) with his goat herd (his children) build a new family with a girl (Maria) who responded to his song (request for a new governess), with the girl’s mother (Reverend Mother) encouraging the girl to follow her heart
Great catch!!!
The sacred and the propane.
Omg you’re a genius!!!!!
Never thought of that !
I just got that!! So true.
Except that the real life Maria wasn't in love with Captain von Trapp. She married him for the children.
So many little things that bring me back: the goat's tails wag, the Baroness always looks to the Captain to see how to react, the way Maria elbow-nudges Briggita, and Gretel's genuine captivation with the puppets.
...
Holy cow I never noticed that about Elsa...
She was SO not the one for him...

This scene is the kind that could so easily have been cut from the final movie. I'm glad they left it in. It's pure charm.
Indeed, this is the kind of scene that doesn't necessarily move the story forward. But showing the characters just spending time with each other (putting on a puppet show, in this instance) draws us the audience into their world and allows us to care about them all the more when the story moves forward.
One of my favorite scenes and songs of this movie!
@@lisamcbride8921 same!
I'm glad they didn't. It's quite character-building for the captain, showing us how much fun he's now having interacting with his children.
That’s because, back then, Hollywood didn’t give a shit about long runtimes.
I read how the kids and Julie actually spent 3 months learning how to do this scene; marionette puppets, singing & everything❣️
I remember Julie Andrews in interview it was an really difficult scene to do.
I am glad she did it and i am glad they left it in its amazing
Really? I thought that they were shooting the kids with the puppet rods from below then cutting the scene and shooting the puppets moved by pro puppeteers offscreen.
@@yorgunsamuray They did; I just read it in Wikipedia. It's still an incredibly charming scene

Imagine the cringy CGI that would be used today to recreate this scene. You can't top the original. What a classic.
Do you thought Avatar was cringy? Jungle book remake? Lion king? Dude, don't discredit something just because you don't like it, and less with something that has absolutly nothing to do with it.

So not only can the von Trapp kids sing, they're also master-level marionettists?
Its a movie
Yes, I was just marveling that having been introduced to this film 40 years ago as a preteen, having watched it various times per year since, only today did it occur to me that no way in the world could the kids have owned all those puppets, much less made all the scenery and learned to do the incredibly complicated movements, and so forth. Yes, other commenter, we get that it's a movie, but we're just amused by the thought of not even questioning that within the logic of the movie.
If one goes back to this part of the film, the scene ends with one of the children asking their "Uncle Max" if they can keep the "puppets" to which Uncle Max responded "Of course, I already told Professor _____ (presumably the previous owner/creator) and why else did I send the bill to your Father." With that dialogue it has been established that the whole marionette set was lent (or they may have rented it) to the Von Trapp children and Fraulein Maria via funny Uncle Max. Though it is true that it does look quite impressive to us viewers for all of the children to ably "handle" the puppets and change of backdrop scenery with ease and synchronicity in movement, given the young children's ages, I think it is at this point that the crerators of the movie hope to rely on the audience's imagination - since it was presented that a decent amount of time have supposedly lapsed between the scene prior and the Goatherd scene, then it can be presumed that the Governess and children had enough time to practice from the time they got the marionette set until actual presentation. It also helps that Maria is shown to make gestures to remind the kids on what to do next for the entire presentation.
So sorry but NO, the "Sound of Music" never presented the idea that the Von Trapp kids owned and created the marionette set (puppets & scenery) nor had the story make us believe they were highly talented puppeteers.

@@tejaswoman In case you weren't aware, it's called "willing suspension of disbelief" and is a major component of well-written and expertly-peformed theater, television, and motion picture. If the subject and script are crap, and the actors are second-rate, all we can think about is how bad it is, but when it's as perfect as this is, we subconsciously permit ourselves to wonder at the story, the characters, and the action, without thinking about details. It's a mark of intelligence and sophistication to be able to do this. Only dull, uneducated, ignorant cretins care about "it's a movie"....

People today don’t realize that at the time this film was made Eleanor Parker (the Baroness) was the most famous to filmgoers. The other performers were mostly known for their stage work. She was cast not only for her talent but her name recognition. She was a very talented performer, several Oscar nominations, played many different roles, but sadly is most remember for her The Sound of Music. But I suppose not the worst thing to be remembered for! She does have the best lines!
Yes she was a very talented actress and a good person too.
After the puppet show:
Baroness Schroeder: "My dear, is there anything you can't do?"
Maria: "Well, I'm not sure I'll make a very good nun."
Baroness: "If you have any problems, I'll be happy to help you."
She held a certain class and elegance- so beautiful!
If you'd like to see a musical in which Eleanor Parker plays the main character, try *Interrupted Melody* (1955).
And really very humble. Once she realized that Maria and the Captain loved each other she gracefully packed her little bags and left.
