Sometimes, I feel like I’m the Dark Knight and Britec is Alfred talking to me through the phone walking me through a mission. Anyway, I just bought a laptop and I’m doing this, I used the samsung ssd t7 touch for work and my video editing. Thanks Brian!
I have two programs that only run on windows that I cannot do without. I don't need them very often but when I do, I REALLY DO. Running windows from an external drive when I need them will finally allow me to wipe my laptop and install Debian 12. Thank you.
I am not clear about licensing the operating system on the USB. Does one need to buy a retail licence so that the USB can be moved around different PCs?
I have win 11 Pro on my desktop machine. It will be helpful to have this to run on my Asus gaming laptop from 2016, which is not supported. As luck would have it, I have just upgraded one of my NVME drives, so I have a spare 512gb Nvme in an enclosure to use. Thanks for this video, very helpful indeed.
Thanx for the interesting video. Using your default method for Rufus all I got when I went to boot to the USB HD was a black screen. By changing the Partition Scheme from GPT to MBR which changed Target System to BIOS. That allowed the USB drive to boot up and run Win 11 slowly but fine. I've just order an external USB3 caddy and a 256Gig SSD so will do this again and keep it as an emergency Windows drive to allow me to see files on maybe a faulty drive or allow be to download an ISO or repair files for a faulty drive. Also works on some Linux distros if you can set a Persistence size.
*Dont change the one option to Windows to go if you want to install Windows to your ssd or any other internal drive.* It means that Windows is to go on the USB-Drive (which is what this Video-Tutorial is all about) and wont install to your internal drive! I am now on my second day of trying everything out to copy Windows to my ssd among other things with many 3rd party programs, I almost had a panick attack because I saw no way out, Thankfully I finally found out the issue
This is the kind of thing I have done in the past to fix PC problems . Ive used Rufus to boot up a version of Linux . Then access drives which have crashed etc . Or you can put other utlities on it to fix other issues. Booting a portable OS using this method is definitely a good idea
Hi Brian, I notice that you didn't answer Lawrence Hawgood's question regarding Licencing! If I/We create this USB drive or an External SSD drive whilst using a non compliant Windows 10 Pro machine, will this affect the licence under which the "Resident" Windows 10 O.S. is functioning? If not; good, but I'm mystified as to where it obtains its own licence to function legally! Can you explain??
I'd like to see you actually using it online and doing normal things like video conversion, simple photoshop, game play on 3.1 and 3.2 thumbdrives or that nvme thing you said was fast. Thanks. Thank you for all your vids. ❤
if you already have windows installed on the computer make sure to enable autoboot from the usb, type windows to go in the search bar and click the 1st option and enable/put yes, otherwise it will not let you boot from it and it will make you boot into the main windows os or the one already installed
I tried this method a few months ago with a Sandisk Cruzer Glide 128GB and it took forever to build but it did eventually work. Gonna try again with a Sandisk Ultra Flair 256GB hoping for a faster experience. My 2018 HP Stream laptop won't upgrade to Windows 11 due to only having 32GB of eMMC storage. Every thing else (except for 4GB of RAM) is good to go.
@@Britec09 The Ultra Flair is definitely faster than the Cruzer Glide......but darn if it doesn't get hot! Now I have Windows 11 on my 5 year old laptop with inefficient storage. Thanks Britec09

Hi Brain, many thanks yet again for another great video here. I just wanted to ask a couple silly questions if I may? 1 If I wanna use an nvme ssd drive, what would the right volume of storage be? As I wanted to run the win11 “to go” just like a normal pc and to use it as a permanent storage with that very drive. i.e. if I use a 500gb drive to install the window11 to go would that slow down the boot up process on that drive? Since I wanted to use the drive to store all the normal files and documents. Perhaps, I would need to partition the drives into two drives, would that work? 2 I am not too sure about the licensing implications that you mentioned, if I chose the win11 pro, I suppose I would need to pay for a licence for the Win11 pro, is that correct? 3 If I chose the win home edition, would I be able to use my existing licence?
1. You need at least 32 GB, 500GB should be enough. If it is an NVME drive, why should it slow down anything at all? 2. If you had installed a valid Win10 Pro license on the specific computer before Win11 will automatically be activated with that former license. 3. If you had a Home license before, yes.
It worked fine on M.2 NVMe drive in drive Anker drive enclosure. Windows do not have the rounded edges typical of Windows 11: all the windows have square corners. Anyone else experiencing this? Any solutions? Thanks.
Why does this work on unsupported hardware, but not when installed directly onto an internal drive on the same hardware? Does booting from a Windows On The Go bypass the TPM and CPU check?
I would recommend going with the windows 11 minimum of 64gb or larger personallyi would go larger like you can get 128gb for like maybe idk it’s been a bit but like $16 or something like storage is cheap
I have one of those really cheap laptops with only a 30gb SSD in it so I'd like to be able to run Windows from an external HDD or something if that works
Thanks your video is appreciated, I am going to try this I think. So, in theory, would this work on a no-operating system pc I had custom made then installed just Linux on? And my windows 10 laptop (without destroying the windows 10), and final question, what size sandisk is needed, as in memory?
