Med School Insiders could you touch on points of balancing a family and medical school? I’m currently in my undergrad majoring in biochemistry. I work 40+ hours a week and have 5 kids. I’m trying to find a spot to fit research, volunteering, and shadowing in. I sometimes feel as though I don’t have enough time to get everything done.

You explained time management very well! I can definitely relate with putting away my devices and scheduling my events that work for me as a person rather than according to what works for most people. I also find gym first thing in the morning can make my day tiring afterwards :D

This was a great video, and it really helps maximize time. But I would like to know what you think in terms of energy. I have a chronic illness and I have a limited amount of energy in a day. It doesn't matter how I plan my day because whatever I want to do makes me tired halfway into the day. I can't go out with friends if I decide to work or vice versa.

    1) Do , focus ONLY one thing at a time
    2) Set small goals at a given time
    3) Learn from failures
    4) Do not compromise your sleep
    5) Important and urgency are different stuff - do important things (meditate, brush teeth etc in the early hours of morning ) make them as habits

Your brain operates in the now so when you tell it some time in the future it doesn't focus on the task as the future is never happening. So your habit in the present is to 'be lazy'. If you want to change that habit start doing something now it doesn't have to be a major task. The actual task is to change your habit; so for example: You have the laundry to do so you pick up your dirty clothes and put them in the laundry basket and that's it you started to do in the present. Then build on it. Remember you are not trying to achieve the laundry you are making a habit of doing by starting small. Apply the laundry example to what you want to achieve. Hope this helps :)

That's my current system for my scheduling. I usually arrange it in a more primitive style, as I assess what I need to do at the start of the day instead of having it planned. But I find that this currently works really well for me and my procrastination (since I've been shifting my reasons for procrastination from simply not enough motivation to too large to tackle) and not being overwhelmed.

Finding this channel almost two years ago now has been such a help! I have also realised more and more that enjoying and embracing the process is a key factor. Drastic changes don't come overnight but consistency and a willingness to try new things, one step at a time with a little bit of tweaking here and there does in time lead to results! Thank you Dr. Jubbal for the content this channel brings! Greetings from Sweden.

A lot of people are going to have issues implementing these methods, but it's important to have a clear understanding of yourself and what it is you're not doing. You can choose to say you're not "motivated" or that you don't have "passion", but most of the time what you're saying is that you're unwilling to put in the effort and time it takes to do something. Once you realize that, it then becomes a problem you can work on.

    1. Number 1 dogma:
    - Only either spend your time working all out or playing all out, don't try to do both at the same time
    - Focus 1 thing at a time only
    - that is why I struggle with listening to music and doing work at the same time lol, sometimes multitasking just doesn't work and it slows you down rather than speeding you up
    2. Work life balance doesn't exist
    - it is rather a work life harmony that we juggle and dance within the greater context of our lives
    - often find ourselves to be focused on 1 or the other
    3. Urgency and importance isn't the same thing
    - working out and eating healthy isn't urgency, but they are important, so they should still be strictly followed
    4. Parksin's Law - work expands to fill the time allotted to it
    - so that is why people procrastinate, but gets a lot of stuff done in the last few days
    - no distraction left so gets super productive all of the sudden
    ⚠️
    - very important to turn off all distractions, like email, texts, and DM, because they can be very distracting and even a little ping can greatly hinder your work, must do this before you go to work (unless your task is helping your friends out or something, then maybe you can have it on, yeah).
    5. Practice allotting time - assign time to work to get maximum efficiency
    - A. Plan your day out, see what you want to do and got to do, then see what you can prioritize
    - Outline, then experiment and execute, then revise, then execute again
    - Dr. Jabal prioritizes important but non-emergency work, high quality rather than extended medium quality work, and 8-9 hours of sleep
    - B. You cannot focus indefinitely for hours on end
    - important to use the pomodoro method to prevent yourself from burn out
    - C. Entropy grow as the day proceeds
    - prioritize in doing more important or foundational items in the morning
    6. Don't compromise on sleep
    - sleeping is so important, you are only more efficient if you are awake
    - a lack of sleep should only be exceptions, not the rule
    7. Growth mindset and be flexible
    - you will inevitably fail to follow your schedule or on many things in life, but just think of how you can do better the next time or what you can do at the moment to make the most out of what you got
    8. Learning how to spend flexible time intelligently
    - do productive and fun things instead of mindlessly doing things? idk lol, just balance it out
    - I guess maybe can have down time, part of life maybe, but plan it and keep it within a range of time
    - if you really need it
    Thank you Dr. Jabal!

Since my elementary school 🏫, Till university, I have been just applying active listening 👂,
Never take notes 📝, once I arrive home, I start writing ✍️ what I was listening in class,
and I notice that has helped me tremendously to learn quick and be very successful,
well I also love to read a lot and make my own summarise and charts, in this way I simplify all the information and I can use it when I really need it.
One of my secrets is researching and study 📖 what I really like, and enjoy 😉 doing it

I couldn't even focus on this video. I'll have to watch it a few times for it to sink in as much as I want it to.

Love your vid! Keep them up please. I have a question: I'm in business development, and clients and other parties do not follow my schedule. Any suggestions for people with similar job nature? Who rely on a lot of coordination and interaction with other people?

The problem of me leaving my phone in another room is that I start thinking that I need it to do researches or ask my classmates what was important for the test and if we had homework ,so when I keep it, I start wasting time on instagram or other apps

1.Keep the phone in the other room. Turn notifications off.
      2. write down what you want to look up
      3. Set a time to check your phone
      4. Check your phone on a time limit
      5. Get back to work when your time limit is over.
      6. Repeat.

Probably the most important meta skill when trying to improve or change is the realization that you may actually fail or miss your target many times before any permanent change occurs, and this is fine.
The ability to forgive yourself and keep trying is fat more important than beating yourself up for not reaching an arbitrary goal as fast as you would like.
You cant improve a habit that doesnt exist.

The point is not that life is short. The point is that life ends and you end up where you started. The idea that you can "waste" life or "be efficient" with time is an illusion.

From today (I know it's the 2nd day of this year) but I'll try my best to get closer to my dream of becoming a doctor. By setting my goals to reaching them, I'll try to be more and more productive for myself, please pray for me. I hope some day in near future I return here as a medstudent and remember this moment🤞
