As someone who has employed a multitude of techniques in scheduling (whiteboards, planners, digital task management apps, etc.), I didn’t expect to learn much from this video. I was wrong. Fantastic content! I found this at the perfect time because I’m suffering a great deal of burnout.
Getting Things Done (GTD) methodology is an absolutely amazing way to a) stay organized, b) create an external mind which clears up your own one and c) actually enjoy the amazing process. I highly recommend! The other concept I find extremely useful (which was covered in the video to some extent) is the difference between high-resolution fun and low-resolution fun - simply put, do fun things that are actually fun (e.g. playing a video game that you love over browsing facebook). Another useful tip for beginners is to always schedule high-resolution fun activities first so as to not discourage yourself or burnout. I love the focus on quality topic you mentioned. Even disciplined people suffer from this a lot. I’ve been focusing more on quality studying rather than quantity and I feel great. I now get more sleep, exercise consistently, and study even harder than before
I try to create my own schedule, which I did start recently a month ago, but what makes that complicated is my parents' time. They want me to do certain things, even before I leave the house and then I just don't have enough time in the day to get certain things on my list done whether it be revising or reviewing a story I'm writing, drawing something that I can't get off my mind, finish a book that's been sitting on my shelf for the last 10 years or working on a complicated project such as sculpting a beautifully detailed ball-jointed doll of my own vision.
Awesome info! It bothers me when people would tell me it only takes 30 min-1 hour to workout so it shouldn’t be difficult to incorporate that in the schedule, but as you mentioned, you need 2 hrs reserved for that because of the commute, changing/showering, etc. I have a planner but I never thought to write down what I’m going to do every hour; I only put major appointments in there so I will certainly be using this strategy. I do it for my job and make a list of what I need to accomplish for the day and cross them out and I do the same for my school work to see which ones are due the soonest and basically juggle the time I have to balance out my school work too. I also use the Pomodoro technique so it makes me think I’m only studying for 30min-1 hr but sometimes study longer when I’m already in the flow of effectively studying/working. I also realized that I have to put my phone on airplane mode so I don’t hear any distractions as much as possible. I was actually surprised when this video mentioned skipping med school classes in the second year to study alone, because I’m the type who needs to be in class and enjoys being in class, but I can see why it isn’t always productive to attend every class.
This is so helpful I’ve always loved the idea of schedule and I make a lottt of schedule because they make me feel like I’m in control but unfortunately I always fail to follow them (not even 60%) this was definitely helpful Dr J can you make a video about staying consistent and study properly even when you’re having a bad day of are feeling low or just struggling with depression?? I am a stay at home mom with ADHD and 6 kids with ADHD, and constantly make new schedules, trying to figure out what works. I have been told several times to just give up since I don't ever stick to a schedule anyways....It is exhausting to try to be "normal" It is defeating. Today I was ready to give up trying. I was just going let things be...but I decided to try just one more time, so I looked for reasons why my schedules aren't working, and how to fix it and this popped up. Thank you for posting this video. You have given me hope again.
2nd year resident in anato-pathology in canada here and i've been binging your videos all weekend! wish i would they would have existed when i was a med student but a lot of things still apply to me now and will surely help me in the future so thank you so much!
Thank you Dr.Jubbal ❤️ I watched all your videos continously for the past couple of days. I'm working on my bigger Dream. In our country, we're taught what to learn, but never HOW to learn. Your videos gave me the insights on the science of studying. Now I'm understanding everything. Hope I'll soon achieve the Dream of my life. Thank you so much ❤️ Keep enlighting the world. 🌟
Thank you so much! I'm such bad at time management, and actually sticking to the stuff I planned. I aim on getting into medical school, so this is so useful!
I never really made a schedule but after watching this I'll try to make one. I usually try to prioritize my work but I always end up drained and tired and I don't get to put in any study time and now I'm trying to catch up😢
I’ve been doing exactly this for the past year. Super happy to see this video advocates the same thing. I have a full time job but I manage to do so much more. It’s amazing
I‘m not a med student, but all those tips work for me as well (I’m a law student so the amount of work is the same). Personally, I need to work out a routine for me, because with changing schedules I’m not staying disciplined. So I have my fixed days for each subject. When making a new schedule for the new term I’m packing all in a day I’d like to do that day. Normally it’s too much. The next week I change my schedule according to my experience the week before. But in minimising my daily task i have to plan long term towards my exams so I am prepared well when they come up. I don’t like to study an awful lot in the weeks before an exam so I try to learn each chapter we covered in a week in the same week so I only have to revise it once before the exam comes up.
Been waiting for this one. I’ve been working 180+ hour pay checks and I’m never home and losing my edge. This is a great blueprint to get me on track. Thanks brother.
I’m a high school student. Next year will be my first of seven years of med school here in Lebanon. I thank you for all the content you’re putting down in these videos. It helped and helps prepare well for the next years. I’m trying to accustom myself with a program similar to the one I will use in these years. So thank you and keep up the great work. I have a little question : what is procrastination ?
This may be an obvious one, but if you have a large project to do (for example a 90-page thesis to complete in a year), set aside time every week to work on it. That way, it won't become a massive hassle down the road.
I am horrendous at schedules and this video is great. Thank you for sharing. I will try and make my life more organized and focus and mix work with fun to navigate the day, week, month and create better output towards my goals.
We also don't always know what our goals are or what we would like to be doing. That makes it very difficult to do a schedule. One must understand that trial and error is freeing even while it is scary.
As my professor said, 1 hour of planning can save 5 hours of execution. I am not a medical student, yet your videos are my guidelines in discovering my own study habit. Thank you!
I found that setting time each day for a task is not enough, it is equally important to set mini tasks to be achieved in that time so you won’t let time go by and delude yourself that you were efficient. Awesome video btw - added to my favorites 👍
I really appreciate your videos. I followed your advice and my life has turned into a better state. When I am down and have no energy to keep up with all the work, I come back to watch the videos. It makes me wanna keep going. Thank you!
Starting a busy day, having breakfast while watching Dr. Jubbal? It's a wrap! All of the tips you mentioned are spoken truth. I wouldn't be where I am if it wasn't for a lot of things you taught me through MSI! Thank you for making time to create such useful content.
Used to suck at this accounting subject, to the point I was almost out of the accountancy program. Started to rework my study habits amd gave time and effort repeatedly, now its my fave subject!!! MIND OVER MATTER
My motto is and always has been this: approach is all that matters in life. Lines up perfectly with everything you were saying about learned helplessness. You haven't failed, you just haven't approached this area in a way that will lead to success yet. Weirdly enough it was Dark Souls that taught me this, never stop trying.
I've created a calendar spreadsheet for myself and have tick boxes before each scheduled activity to track my progress if I did the scheduled/planned activity. This helps me see how often and how long I get distracted for and also what worked and didn't work during the day. It's been pretty good so far - I agree it helps not focusing on the times I didn't follow the schedule and being more kind to yourself.
It is also very important to set a specific target goals per study block (example- no. of pages/topics) rather than something vague, like ‘I will finish this chapter in 4 hours’.This helps being realistic and lessens chances of failure. Remember it could also be demotivating when goal isn’t reached, but u gotta keep going. Another would be, to not indulge in super fun breaks since that would keep you from resuming studying. Especially those 5 min breaks for pomodoro, I suggest don’t even leave your desk, haha. P.S: This is most challenging for me,getting back from the bREaK! 😅
As a person with depression and has suffered with depression in the past the third reason is so true. People use their depression as a scapegoat all the time and I myself used it as one point as well.
Helpful AF bruh. Making a schedule, and having the discipline to stick to it are 2 totally different lessons in life. Optimizing efficiency is key for me. Still working out the kinks ;)
Thank you for the video. I just took my o line test and was not happy from the result. I knew I had to change something but didn't know what. Then, your video was the first on my subscription videos tab. Just what I needed. A change in schedule and scheduling better for my goals.
I would love to have a quarantine addition to this video. Last semester I had a study schedule and it was working efficiently. When quarantine happened, my schedule pretty much fell apart.
I found that if I use color and stickers and make my schedule artsy I’m more likely to fallow it and adjust. when it just black and white It’s depressing to look at and I don’t want to deal with it.
Been applying online for jobs and turned in so many applications working on them for hours for about 2 days straight. A new week and I’m too exhausted to even get started on one. Realizing I’ve burned myself out especially focusing on that learned helplessness from the rejections I’ve already received thinking I’m not good enough and it’s useless. Thanks for the video. Will be reviewing it again and implementing these strategies to my life’s current situation.
I am a med student, I usually suffer with sticking to studying for long periods, I put great goals and great schedules and then I do nothing. for example, this semester i planned to start hardly working and studying all the lectures one by one each on their day, but I am ending the second week doing very little of what i was supposed and was able to do. Escapism is my problem, I could do anything in the study time but not studying, I hope someday a magic would happen and i can stick to my studying and do them as a priority before anything else like those who i see in the college
I suffered from the exact same thing and the way I got over it by changing my mind set of why am I studying and by remembering everyday my goals and keep myself motivated Hope this helps you too!
@@mahmoudaktham2507 I know it's not easy but it's not impossible either! I'm telling you this because I managed to break through and I hope you do too! It's just how it worked for me!
Well, I think your problem is your schedule :3 You don't need to put yourself to study everytime. I used to be like you, but I try to change my schedule. First, take some activity you want to do, such as watch movie, meet friends or do anything you want. After you have a plan for every thing of your life, it's time for plan studying. You will feel "yeah, study is hard but I have got sometime for play and relax, I should study more focus :>" Hope you luck :3
I love love love your channel. I’m in Fsc first year and I CANNOT CANNOT ABSOLUTELY CANNOT go through the year without these videos. Whenever my motivation is down I watch one of your videos and get motivated
Beautiful work man! Very clear and apt explanation! One thing I wish to add.. learnt it in one of the Positive Psychology lectures. While setting goals, one should have broad Short Term Goals (0-6 months), Long Term Goals(6mon-2yrs), and Meaning of Life (something we strive for!). This gives a route to succeed, and one's efforts put in daily, add up to the desired goal at the end of the year! I am personally following this since last year. I experimented, and made my Yearly Goal (at the beginning of 2020), then Monthly Goals to achieve the same, and Daily Goals on a daily basis! It's giving good benefits till now! Hope to achieve my yearly goal this year! All the Best man! You're doing a great job!
My issue with sticking to a schedule is setting goals that are too high at the moment (unachievable goals) because of my perfectionism. Perfectionism is really a form of procrastination. I used to be so obsessed with how organized I was that I spent all my time planning and not enough time practicing the material. Now I know it's okay to sink my teeth in and have a messy process and to set more achievable goals to simply get started so that I actually exceed them. I also have to keep in mind a time-frame. I schedule my midterms and chunk out what material I need to cover and master by which date. Has helped a ton. I'm lucky enough to not have developed learned helplessness. I like scheduling too. I also have failed many times in my life, but those failures don't define me. They are just methods that didn't work and now I have fixed them! :) I was also diagnosed with central sleep apnea. I would fall asleep constantly and my somnologist thought I had narcolepsy. A sleep study revealed the apnea and now I feel so much better being diagnosed with an actual medical handicap. Everything makes sense now. I won't let that define me either. It's just a barrier to address so I can continue my progress. I have a bipap machine on the way! So anyone reading this, also don't neglect any medical issues you may have that could get in the way of your schedule. Maintaining a healthy energy level is so so important!
Other tip is to get IMPORTANT things done first like studies or work you'll be relaxed by the end of the day for doing the hard ones ❤️ Ps : thank you so much for the video it really helped me
"Tracking time" and "setting goals" are two very different reasons to use a schedule. You can do the former, and benefit from it, even if you can't do the latter. Goal setting is difficult-to-impossible for people with certain conditions (like ADHD)-they may be very effective at pursuing a goal, but need someone else to create that goal in the first place. So any method that starts with "you need to do this to achieve your goals" is immediately excluding anyone for whom "set a goal" is as actionable a directive as "jump off the cliff and fly" is for the rest of us.
Thank you it help me so much to find the answer, since I was in high school, I love making a to do list, but I found it hard, because I knew I always a lot of things to do, even in my sleep, and the worst part is I never felt good enough, bcs I mostly never done 100% according to my schedule, that made me stressful, and made me undicipline, and failed to make a schedule, sometime i dont write for months, then feel worse bcs I dont have a plan or goals, and start write a schedule again, then stop again so many time, really happened like that over and over again, then I learnt its better to write a schedule and journaling, review your days, and week, and learn how to improve myself day by day, by doing that i feel happy and challenging, and able how to control my mind and emotion better, of course my time too! So I do agree that its better to do 50% of your schedule in longterm than do 100% just for a week, keep inspiring, good luck doctor! - From a clinical phase med student
I just right down my ideal realistic daily routines. And just believe that this is my routine. I lie (for a good cause) to myself that this is my routine. And slowly you'll start to believe it. And rest of the process is, just try to stick with the routine. I'm still trying hard to stick with the routine. Its enjoyable. But somedays i get lazy. So i slack off
Rather than making an endless to do list I create my to-do list than put the estimated time it would take to realistically complete those tasks next to them then schedule them into my day. I time block using a passion planner and schedule them into my day and use a timer to get them completed and find that I’m able to accomplish much more as well as realizing that some of the tasks didn’t actually take that long to complete
Thank you for these insightful tips. Sooo relatable for crazy college life, especially with the credit hours packing on. New perspective on the schedule completion seems awfully helpful, I’ll see how this all goes!!
I'm in my 3rd week of chiropractic school and this was so helpful. It wasn't necessarily new information, though some of it was, but my new perspective is like whoa super relatable now
i'm a high school senior who's supposed to graduate in around 2 months. I have been procrastinating trough all my 4 years. I've been failing because of this, and I know I'm not supposed to be stupid, I just haven't studied at all. But I got to a point where I cannot start my work. I just cannot bring myself to start, it's really hard for me. But I've been trying to learn how to escape this mindset and lifestyle in the last couple of months. I am trying my best, and I hope I can change.
At my med school it is mandatory to attend lectures they run from 8-4 most time then i have to try to use the evening at home to study even though i do feel tired. So far i'm schedule a 2 hour break of eating preparing for the next day and taking a shower before my 4 hour studying session
This is so amazingly helpful, especially if you’re an artist or musician and work “out of office” and need to organize and manage your time and to do lists. My challenge in the past has been being too critical of myself when I have a particularly busy day/week and don’t hit all of my target goals. Loved seeing your pie chart with the goal of hitting at least 50% or above of the plan. My biggest life saviors so far has been getting rid of my TV two years ago. Also, love using #bujo systems and habit trackers. Thank you again for the great content
I have been struggling with juggling house chores, school study, and recreational activities since my last year in college. So much that it affects my internship work. My supervisor advise me to separate my professional work from my house duties by setting 2 large time blocks ( 9am- 5pm for work, the rest for house duties, and personal time). The second is to separate 2 places for professional work and house chores ( since I stayed at home most of the time and often procrastinate by house tidying). It got much harder after I graduated and during the Covid-19 lockdown because I have no clear professional duty and career direction yet.

Quality content, as always. I'm also liking the new animation style, I think it's definitely improving the video quality. Keep it up Kevin!
2nd year resident in anato-pathology in canada here and i've been binging your videos all weekend! wish i would they would have existed when i was a med student but a lot of things still apply to me now and will surely help me in the future so thank you so much!
Tracking time helps a lot, especially being more realistic about how long tasks really takes. Thanks again for excellent video.
Thank you so much ❤️
Keep enlighting the world. 🌟
Thank you so much! I'm such bad at time management, and actually sticking to the stuff I planned. I aim on getting into medical school, so this is so useful!
I never really made a schedule but after watching this I'll try to make one. I usually try to prioritize my work but I always end up drained and tired and I don't get to put in any study time and now I'm trying to catch up😢
" A little woo-woo" 😂.
Definitely a great video !
Willful Blindness. Definitely what I'm going through.
Been waiting for this one. I’ve been working 180+ hour pay checks and I’m never home and losing my edge. This is a great blueprint to get me on track. Thanks brother.
This is the most conscise video on scheduling errors and must-do. Fan of your work!
Procrastination is putting things off because you don’t want to do them :)
This may be an obvious one, but if you have a large project to do (for example a 90-page thesis to complete in a year), set aside time every week to work on it. That way, it won't become a massive hassle down the road.
And you won't forget what you've done like you might if you had like a two month break between periods of frantically working on it :D
@@Evija3000 Exactly.
lol, i was just thinking about that TED talk
Lol. Why shouldn't we procrastinate...? Interesting. You're right.
This video is chef’s kiss- super clear and informative AND visual aided
I love this, it gave me peace of mind to know it’s ok to only complete 50% of what you plan. It drove me insane and this is why I began to research.
I am horrendous at schedules and this video is great. Thank you for sharing. I will try and make my life more organized and focus and mix work with fun to navigate the day, week, month and create better output towards my goals.
This was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for hitting on all the major points!
We also don't always know what our goals are or what we would like to be doing. That makes it very difficult to do a schedule. One must understand that trial and error is freeing even while it is scary.
Im not even a medical student. But this channel is the best
As my professor said, 1 hour of planning can save 5 hours of execution. I am not a medical student, yet your videos are my guidelines in discovering my own study habit. Thank you!
I'm glad these kinds of videos are here
I found that setting time each day for a task is not enough, it is equally important to set mini tasks to be achieved in that time so you won’t let time go by and delude yourself that you were efficient.
I am an OTA, and this is helping me prepare for my cert. exam. Thank you, Dr. Jubbal!
This is the best video about scheduling I've seen so dar!
Legit, stumbled across this video while I avoided studying a math test I have on Monday.
Thank you for this video. I needed it.
awesome video! Thanks sooo much. the sentence discipline equals freedom so much got me!
I'm going to keep revisiting this video. It says a lot of things that I need to hear, and that I need to remind myself of.
I suffered from the exact same thing and the way I got over it by changing my mind set of why am I studying and by remembering everyday my goals and keep myself motivated
Hope this helps you too!
@@outlaw6343 thanks, but saying it is easier than performance
@@mahmoudaktham2507 I know it's not easy but it's not impossible either! I'm telling you this because I managed to break through and I hope you do too! It's just how it worked for me!
THANKS bro, wish you the best
Well, I think your problem is your schedule :3
You don't need to put yourself to study everytime. I used to be like you, but I try to change my schedule.
First, take some activity you want to do, such as watch movie, meet friends or do anything you want.
After you have a plan for every thing of your life, it's time for plan studying.
You will feel "yeah, study is hard but I have got sometime for play and relax, I should study more focus :>"
Hope you luck :3
Heck yes. This explains a lot! I will get back to scheduling my days. Thank you for creating and posting this.
Acutally one good video with actual facts and actual tips. Thanks.
This is so helpful and confirmed some of my observations why I usually procrastinate. Thank you for saving my life.
I love love love your channel. I’m in Fsc first year and I CANNOT CANNOT ABSOLUTELY CANNOT go through the year without these videos. Whenever my motivation is down I watch one of your videos and get motivated
Thank you! I look forward putting this on practice.
This new video inspired me to keep on working toward my goals and to not be over ambitious
An absolutely brilliant & insightful video!
Really great tips ! Scheduling is such a hard task ....
Thank you for this video!! I will absolutely implement this starting today!!
This was a much-needed video! Thank you, Dr. J!
I was also diagnosed with central sleep apnea.
I use a Bullet Journal and it's wonderful to have something beautiful !
Didn't even realize this was a Med Sch channel but the video is great!
You explained this really well, thanks!
Amazing and practical idea Thank you so much I have subscribed your channel
your videos always motivate me
Thank you for these insightful tips. Sooo relatable for crazy college life, especially with the credit hours packing on. New perspective on the schedule completion seems awfully helpful, I’ll see how this all goes!!
I'm in my 3rd week of chiropractic school and this was so helpful. It wasn't necessarily new information, though some of it was, but my new perspective is like whoa super relatable now
I am a medschool student so glad I found this channel Turned on the notifications :D
i'm a high school senior who's supposed to graduate in around 2 months.
Totally feel ya' on this 🙁
wow, thank you!!! I'm not in med school but I loved your videos!!! Keep up the great work!!! Greetings from the cold north :-)
thank you for the knowledge on the video. It helps me right now
At my med school it is mandatory to attend lectures they run from 8-4 most time then i have to try to use the evening at home to study even though i do feel tired. So far i'm schedule a 2 hour break of eating preparing for the next day and taking a shower before my 4 hour studying session
Creating a schedule is not a problem, sticking to it is!
Just wow. Very relatable.
I've been struggling with scheduling, I even gave up. Thank you for this video. Its really helpful
Thank you!!! That was so helpful and practical. :)
Thanks for posting awesome information
5:35, oh boy, I did that for my whole life until now:
start a new habit;
fail to maintain 100%;
quit after a week or two.
Love your videos bro, thanks for taking the time to make them.
Impressive study hacks! Keep up the good work!
