It has since been changed to ties can only be declared if the winners have the exact same number of votes. The other ties are in the Documentary and Shorts categories made at a time when only voters who have seen all the nominees in special screenings can vote for them so there's a smaller pool of voters so ties are more possible. So ties being declared in Best Actress in '68 and in Best Sound Editing in '20212 when there's a far larger pool of voters are truly EXTREMELY rare occurrences.
I like how they didn’t announce both of them at the same time. It still gave a level of suspense for all the winners and gave them all their own opportunities to enjoy the momen
I think it’s great that he announced both winners separately, so both got to enjoy their time of fame and they didn’t have to go there together and just stand there awkwardly while the other one is giving a speech
+Jacob Duran It's much better than Zero Dark Thirty, actually. Zero Dark Thirty is nothing but a very detailed and factually accurate account of history. It's an important movie, but that doesn't necessarily make it great.
Alan Smithee I liked Zero Dark Thirty it was great but Skyfall was much better for sure. Spectre was also equally as good hopefully it gets a few Oscar noms
Sure, but seeing that Zero Dark Thirty had been so hyped as an Oscar contender prior to its political controversy and was likely bound to go home empty-handed, particularly after it and eventual Best Picture winner Argo were absent in Best Director, voters probably were encouraged to gravitate towards it. Besides, Life of Pi would win the most statuettes that night with four (Directing, Cinematography, VFX, and Score).
They cut this category only to give more time to stupid stuff like Lil Rel’s terrible comedy bit from the last telecast. Sure worth the trade off :( And for people wondering, yes it is notable to put a distinction for sound. These are two very distinct positions and skillsets. It’s just part of the continuing efforts by Hollywood to push out the ‘unimportant’ positions from recognition
I'm glad that they instituted some kind of procedures for this post-1995. Having to call both winners up at once is a bit awkward and deprives both of some of the moment to which they're entitled.
First off, you must realize that a good portion of the sounds actually captured on set aren't used in the end, but rather are consulted as references. We start with sound editing, which is the off-set re-creation of individual sounds in the soundtrack. This includes sound effects (i.e., sounds specifically called for in the script), foley (i.e., sounds not specifically called for in the script, but you'd expect to be there anyway), dialogue (which might involve actors re-recording their lines, voiceover, and/or lines that could play over other shots in case viewers need to be fed some information), and music (which get their own categories). These artists work under the supervising sound editor(s). All these sounds are meticulously laid out in the soundtrack for each scene. The film editor produces the final cut that's satisfactory to the director, producers, and studio executives, and the composer contributes his score cues. Then it's time for "re-recording", i.e., sound mixing. Sound re-recording mixers/engineers then go through the entire film, scene by scene and in between, managing how all these sounds, whether captured on set or created by the sound editing team, relate to one another. In other words, they finalize which sounds are louder and which sounds are quieter, which sounds sound closer and which sounds sound farther away, along with the musical score. TL:DR - Sound editing involves the PARTS. Sound mixing involves the WHOLE.
They got the same amount of votes, so they had to call it a tie. It’s very rare, since the chance of having the same number of votes is very little, but it had happen a few times before
In the ending credits of movies, we see people credited as "supervising sound editors" who are the people who go up on stage when the film won the Oscar in this category - again: "supervising sound editor". And there are other people credited as "sound editors". And there are still other people credited as "foley artists". If the foley artists make the foley (the noises and sounds), and sound editors make the editing for the sound, I wonder: What the supervising sound editors do after all? I don't believe they just supervise it, because this is not creating something. So, what the supervising sound editors do?
Supervising sound editors are those who guide their sound artists towards their and the director's audial vision, give final approval for every individual sound decision, and who relay and negotiate these decisions with the director and producers. (Btw, "sound editors" are the guys who create sounds that are specifically called for in the script. "Foley artists", on the other hand, deal with sounds that aren't specifically called for in the script, but one would expect to be there without question, i.e., "room tone", footsteps, any sounds you make when you come into contact with a surface, street noise, and the like.)
Apparently it's mandatory to have long blonde hair to win in this category. Also I hope the Zero Dark Thirty guy got another copy of the envelope announcing the win.
I care. I felt for zero dark thirty in particular, that the sound was one of the best aspects of the technical side of the film since it sounded so real and unique from other films.
Mark Wahlberg: "No; actually, I'm Catholic." Me: "I've heard the stories, but it's better than those I've heard of the Jewish people about two-thousand years ago."
FUN FACT: This was only the sixth tie in the entire history of the Academy Awards.
Aside from Barbra and Katharine - tie for Best Actress, who else?

Can we talk about how professional Wahlberg was, for this tie?
"Uhh... the first Oscar goes to..." I would've just rambled the names of the both movies at once
Respect for Wahlberg
Valpas Kankaristo: It seemed like the envelope indicated that he had to say it like that.
Maybe ZDT had just 2 votes over Skyfall that's why ZDT was announced first. I dunno but that's maybe the results.
@@jay_rjabonillo9908 as i know that is old academy rule...now you have to have equal votes to have a tie
It really was. He handled it well!!
Ted looks so real
he is real
Ted is so funny.
Even now
The way he said "No BS, we have a tie."
The most natural Wahlberg's ever been outside of The Departed. 😄
The "no BS" thing is the most Mark Whalberg thing I've ever heard Mark Whalberg say.
Mark Whalberg: I'm not doing a sequel with you........
Yeah how did that go?
I think it’s great that he announced both winners separately, so both got to enjoy their time of fame and they didn’t have to go there together and just stand there awkwardly while the other one is giving a speech
When you have won an Oscar and then your doppelganger wins it too
OMG all three look basically the same
They're competing for the Lucious Malfoy award.
Funny thing. It's like the voters thought: "You know, what will be nice? A tie between two guys from Sweden with long blonde hair" :)
It would be funny if someone was nominated twice in the same category and there was a tie with himself.
All three of them have the same hair and I'm dying
"I'm not doing a sequel with you" oh how wrong
imagine a best picture tie
Its good!
when a BEAR is braver than 99.9% of u.s politicians. TED our king
The sound editing in “Zero Dark Thirty” is quite realistic, just like the subject matter. “Geronimo. For God and Country. Geronimo.”
Ted in this scene wins best visual effects
Zero Dark Thirty is one of the best films ever made.
with this new puppet technology, we don't need more cgi
ZERO DAK THIRTY!
Wrong answer try again!! lol lol lol lol lol lol
I love you TED!!!
Why does it feel so much more epic when Skyfall wins?

Alan Smithee I liked Zero Dark Thirty it was great but Skyfall was much better for sure. Spectre was also equally as good hopefully it gets a few Oscar noms
Because people actually saw Skyfall
Because it's the first time a James Bond movie had won an Oscar since "Thunderball".
I think that Ted sounds identical to Peter Griffin.
AmishParadise27 (AKA: Tyler) it's the same voice actor
I know that. But couldn't Seth MacFarlane just change the two voices enough so it didn't sound similar?
Woah i didn't know ties were possible
Its always possible but its rare. And its good. It depends how competitive, impactful and quality the nominees are.
There’s been 6
No BS, we have a tie.
The old comments were bots or what? No reference to anything Ted said
2/3 of the winners are Swedish. And Mark Wahlberg is of Swedish decent, just saying that we (Swedish people) are quite awesome!
*Swedish people must have good ears.*
I wonder how people would react if there's a tie for Best Picture?
No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood should've tied in 2007.
i dont think best picture can tie because of the preferential voting system
@@BlakePavey Only in the extremely unlikely situation that there are only two left, and both have exactly the same votes, which would be just bonkers
Adami imagine if it happened this year because it’s so stacked for the Best Picture race 😬

at 2:49 its like "Yes, best moment of my life ever"

I wonder when will we have the Next tie (with category and which films).
That's Interesting
This is the First time to Have Double Winner for one category
And Mark helped out with the success of the James Bond series.
