      Any recommendations for a wet and windy winter vacation in Scotland? I'm not so much worried about snow as I'm trying to bring enough options for wet weather. I'm looking into a waterproof backpack option (personal item that can hold umbrella, hiking poles and rain coat) that can be used as purse alternative and for outdoor adventures. Debating between waterproof insulated hiking boots vs rain boots. Having a hard time trying to build a capsule wardrobe with warm layers that can be reduced for warm indoor activities and transition to outdoor walks, hikes and walking tours. Wish me luck trying to fit it all in a carry on : )

      I would do as much merino wool as possible (short sleeve, long sleeve, legging, jacket) and quick dry pants with some Vessi boots (waterproof) and a good raincoat. A waterproof backpack will be great for those days you need it, but I would bring some sort of water resistant purse or sling bag that is small for other days. A hat is always nice too for the rain. I sometimes bring two!

We're going for a 4 week trip to South America in March; starting in Santiago, up to the Atacama Desert, then down to Valpaariso for a 12 night cruise through the Chilean Fjords. This made me laugh. Packed carry on only (not a small lady either-ny shoes are almost as wide as my carry on). I just got back from a seven day cruise, three days in LA (where it was chilly) and I still overpacked. And had room to bring back souvenirs. 😂 Best part was when we got to LAX super early and I could go through security and relax while the rest of my party had to wait to check luggage.

    Just a few weeks ago, I did my first two cruises (one day between them) with carry-on only. Both carry-on (eBags' Motherlode Jr backpack) and personal item (Take Off) were about 30 to 35 pounds each, plus a few pounds of clothing in the stuffable neck pillow I made.
    The biggest problems with packing were my formal/gala dress (sequins do not pack tight), my full face snorkel mask (modified with an old pair of prescription glasses inside it - something I can't necessarily do with a rental) and the fins to go with them, and shoes (sandals, water shoes, some lightweight sneakers, and a pair of jazz boots that I can actually dance in).
    I don't think I ever want to do a cruise with carry-on only again. I'll be driving to my next two. It's not that I will bring more - it's that having a medium suitcase means my backpack won't need to be so heavy, plus the wider wheel base should make it easier, too.

    I'd love to see packing tips for men on a cruise as well that includes dressing up a bit for dinners and 3 formal nights. My husband is 6'2" and wears size 13 shoes. The hardest cruises to pack for me are the ones that have both hot and cold (such as So America and Antarctica on same itinerary). Your packing tips, especially the interventions, have been very eye opening and helpful!

    • @ItsTheKellys
      @ItsTheKellys  5 месяцев назад +1

      Also, for South America/Antarctica, it was actually very easy, I did it in a backpack!
      In Punta Arenas/Ushuaia, you will be just as cold and still wear the merino wool/adventure gear. Your boots are included for Antarctica, so you don’t need to pack anything more than a decent waterproof shoe.
      If you spend time in Buenos Aires or Santiago or Valparaiso after, it will be hot, but I had 2-3 outfits for that and was fine!

    We just got back 2 weeks ago from a 10 day Mexican Riviera and Sea of Cortez cruise. We only had to take the train from Los Angeles to San Diego, so no air travel. We so overpacked! 2 large suitcases and 2 carry-ons, plus backpacks AND a purse. Ugh. Okay, we did carry 4 bottles of wine each. Holland America Line allows more than one bottle.
    We signed up for unlimited laundry and never unpacked 70% of what we took.
    We're going on a Med cruise next May after 10 days in Paris with a 2 day jaunt over to London. So 2 different climates. But I know that we can do better.

    going on a 10 day cruise in January, plus 3 or 4 travel days. I was thinking of trying for carryon only, but I think I will pack mostly in my carryon, then take one medium checked bag for the 3 of us (teen and husband). We are not used to hot and humid, so I am just afraid we will be changing twice a day due to...sweat...and I don't relish the thought of wasting time in the laundry room of a ship!

      Just remember if it’s a tropical cruise you will likely be in beachwear for a lot of the day. You really only need decent clothing for evenings, when it’s not hot and humid.

    I been on many cruises mostly all tropical destinations. On port days you usually get sweaty and dirty and need a shower so its two showers and two changes a day rewearing the same clothes over and over is not hygienic. Some cruise lines don’t have a guest laundry and don’t hand washing clothes in cabin don’t dry very well. Your suitcase is very under packed for going on a cruise.

    • @ItsTheKellys
      @ItsTheKellys  Месяц назад

      It’s worked well for me for my dozens of cruises over the years. To each their own.
      Most people overpack on cruises and never end up wearing half of their clothes because they don’t end up wearing the 2 outfits a day.
      On port days I wear bathing suits with essentially a coverup, and I wear the same one everytime. I’m not checking a bag and overpacking to bring 9 coverups, when I’m only wearing it to and from wherever I’m snorkeling.
      And for dinner, I’ll maybe rewear a skirt or dress twice. It’s not a big deal. It’s dinner and karaoke. But thanks for watching ✌🏽

      @ItsTheKellys  5 месяцев назад

      The ship provides towels and you can switch them out as often as you want. If I were doing an excursion that was potentially messy (like a hike or something) I’d pack a little travel towel.
      As for luggage, you typically have the option to carry on your luggage or to hand it in and have it delivered to your room later. Carry on’s will be scanned (much like tsa) and checked bags will be searched. Different cruise lines ban different things, but there’s no liquid rule or anything
