Step by step directions for how to sew a walker tote bag that hangs on the front bar of a walker. This easy pattern is great for charity sewing projects.
I made a walker bag based on your instructions about two years ago. About to make two more now. The first one is worn out, so we're making two this time, so one can be in the wash while the other is on the walker. Thank you for making this video!!
I call these saddle bags, you did a great job with this video, We are making thousands of walker bags for the disabled vets. This is quick for the walkers. We use a similar one for the wheelchair, we do a large square put straps inside before we turn it and add pockets to only one side.
I made one for my mom and it was a godsend. I made smaller pockets on one side for her cell phone and tissue and left the other side larger to carry her tablet or laundry to the shower. Thank you for sharing this its easy and fun to do!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I made 20 bags and donated them to a senior living home and the residents were absolutely delighted! I will be making more to donate to local senior homes. Love the Velcro closures, rather than ribbon,as the Velcro is so easy for the seniors to use. God bless you!!
I have wanted to make something like this for a friend for quite a while. Finally, something that is simple to make, yet that is far better than anything I've seen to buy online. Thank you for sharing this with us!!!
Great video, very easy to follow. Thanks for taking the time to record and post it on RUclips. It looks like a simple project to get my mother a bag she can use to transport things throughout the house (she doesn't actually go outside with her walkers...she has one upstairs and one downstairs to travel short distances; if she goes outside she needs a wheelchair.I think I'll also look for a video to make a bag she can affix to the side arm of her wheelchair for when she's out at one of her son's houses).
Thank you for such a practical pattern! I just made two for my aunt. One thing I did a little differently is I sewed a 1 1/2 inch deep by 1/4 inch wide notch at the center fold (the part that will rest over the bar) on each side so that the hinge isn't in the way. She can fold up her walker without interference. She loves them! No ties to break off! YAY!
great design! so simple. i made one for my Mom. i hope she likes it. thank you so much. i looked all over for a pattern, & yours was the best. i added an extra pocket from some blue jeans onto the front one of the pockets for her cell phone. she should be all set. if she likes it, i may make some for her friends back at the rehab. (she's home now, thank goodness) thanks again!
Thanks for the awesome video. My husbands aunt is 96 years old and has just started using a walker and keeps her phone on the seat as she moves from room to room and it falls on the floor all the time so this should help her. I struggle every year with what to get her for her birthday....off to the fabric store!
Very pretty walker bag. So easy to do. Just not sure myymachine will go through all the fabric layers. Looking forward to making one for a friend. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thank you so much Jimmie. I made it exactly as you instructed except that added batting to it. It gave it some body. It was so much fun and easy to make. I will mail it to my mother as a surprise gift for her and will make a cute "girly" one for Mother's Day. I will add some rick rack or trim to the edges.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I'm a beginning sewer but was able to make one of these tonight for my dad. You made it so easy! I'm super excited about how nicely it came out. Thank you! :-)
Stephanie Mundt You are so sweet to say this! I'm glad the tutorial helped. I'm laughing at how bad the quality of this video is. But if it helped you, Yay!
I belong to a church sewing group that is getting ready to make walker bags for some of the nursing homes. The pattern they're using seems small to me....this one looks much bigger ! I'm going to start making one tomorrow and just bring a few of mine with when we have our next "needle night" January 20th. Thank you for asking ! Eva
I made one for my mother-in-law and she loves it. She says everywhere she goes, people ask her where she got it. I think I'll make some to sell at the next craft fair!!
that's awesome! I want to make a walker bag for my grandma and this is such a doable pattern for a newbie sewer like myself! Thank you for sharing, you gave me a way easier pattern than I was thinking I'd have to do haha
Thanks for a great pattern. I like your version quite a bit. I wasn't happy with other version using ribbon ties on the sides because walkers come in so many different sizes. I'm planning on making this for my grandma and I think she'll really appreciate it.
I make these bags n use to put over rail of hospital bed. Tie on n keep phone remote tissues etc This r great to give to nursing homes. Only about 32” long with no top pocket. Put a loop out of side seam to tie the phone charging card onto. Great for hospital beds n walkers.
Let me add my thanks for your video. I'm planning to make some of these for our church ministry. We have a team of folks who make hospital and nursing/rest home visits. Plan to include a Bible word search magazine, pack of tissues, pen and perhaps other items as available.
I made one for my husband with 2 pcs of material 15 x 36 in blue. He loves it because no girly bow ties. When he goes to physical therapy he has room for a water bottle, cell phone, exercise instructions, and room for more.
I’ve made lots of these for my mom’s assisted living facility. The residents love them! One resident sews but doesn’t have a computer. Are there written instructions I can give her? Thanks so much for the great video!
Walker bags need ties on the lower corners to keep them from swinging if the walker is the type that must be picked up and set down for each step. Otherwise, the bag swings and can throw the person off-balance.
I DID IT I DID it .. PERFECT PERFECT.. THANK UUUUUUU I even embroiderered her Name on it..:O) I made it for my sister n law.. she is in her 90's THANK UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Cut it in half and sew back together after turning one half one direction and the one half the other, then cut our pattern and continue with directions.
Yes, you can make this out of clear vinyl. Walmart sells (in stores with fabric/sewing dept). Use bias binding to enclose seams and edges of pockets. Can also attach vinyl and fabric together as if using 2 layers of fabric as shown in the video. Turn up the vinyl side to form see-through pockets. (Test before sewing so the right side of the fabric is placed correctly.) There are other ways to add clear vinyl pockets, if desired. Search google for walker bag images to see how it's done. BTW, I agree, that I don't think it's necessary to make these clear for shopping purposes. Wheel chairs, baby strollers, large coats and handbags are routinely used/carried by people without incidents.
I think walkers are pretty standard (except for the height). Just measure yours for width and length, and adjust your two pieces of fabric accordingly.

Thank you very much. This was perfect, I made one for a dear friend and this is exactly the guidance and details I needed.

I want to use fabric with a pattern that would show as upright on one side and upside down on the other; Do you have any suggestions for this?
Cut it in half and sew back together after turning one half one direction and the one half the other, then cut our pattern and continue with directions.
I put batting in the middle to make them more durable
Yes good point if using lightweight fabrics.
Can this be made with see thru plastic (so that stores can see you are not stealing things?
I don't think that would be necessary Nancy, some woman have large purses that could hold more than this walker bag.

Will this fit most walkers?
