The Healing Church: Social Control & Foucault [Bloodborne Lore ft. Redgrave and Aegon of Astora]
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 дек 2022
- In this video, Sophie and Sin are joined by Redgrave and Aegon to discuss the Healing Church as an institution of social control. As a combination prison, school, hospital and church, we turn to Michel Foucault to help us shed light on how the Church functions, and its historical antecedents.

Hi everyone,
We hope 2023 brings you a ton of love and joy!
Happy New Year from Sophie, Sin & All The Characters
I’m The oFhh
Attempting to bring a new fan in, a buddy of mine.
I've said, essesntially, that your videos offer good depth with the many injokes and asides being the only barrier to entry, serving as the constant red lights on what """""should,""""" and otherwise would, be a highway.
I have described this video as "middling" in terms of the length of your content, and sent it to my friend, whom I hope to rewatch it with.
A very happy new year to you, Sin and Sophie! Thank you for this lovely episode ❤
Something crossed my mind and I have nobody else at all to share it with. I remember an old stream of yours where you guys showcased old concepts for Martyr Logarius and Cainhurst and JSF kept talking about how obviously Logarius was supposed to be the king of the castle but that they retconned it last minute.
Now, I just played Demons' Souls and I heard a voiceline from the noblewoman in Latria which I don't think I ever listened to before. It talks about how the Old Monk was the king of Latria, and how after the queen chased him away, he returned and killed everyone. This made me realize that Logarius can be the executioner and the King of Cainhurst in one person, just as the Old Monk was. I have never heard anyone talk about this before and I wanted to share it somewhere at least.
Redgrave and Sophie doing a co-op playthrough of Elden Ring and discussing the lore as they go would be INSANE
Yeah I would watch that shit all the way through the entire game.
Tbh I'm loving this Return to Yharnam. All the Soulsborne games are masterpieces, but Bloodborne really has the best conversations to be had about its lore, I think
Every time Sophie, Redgrave, and aegon are together with sin is just the absolute best lore discussion possible to have. Some of the best minds in lore hunting for any game coming together
This episode feels like it was made for me. Good exploration of bio power leading to bio-capital as life itself becomes a commodity.
Hearing Redgrave makes me so happy
So many podcasts for the end of the year. This is illegal. Thank you so much ❤️
Woah, Redgrave is alive?!?!?
Some weird error happened when Elana started talking, and her animation was blank... But do you know who doesn't makes editing mistakes? Our Sponsor glockenspyromancyacademy.com/ ! Check them out it really helps us out :)
I made it through tough times listening to Sophie, Aegon, and Redgrave years ago. My heart is full listening to them all together again. Genuinely, one of the best episodes of a podcast I have ever listened to.
Sophie’s point near the end about understanding things by cutting it up reminds me of a comparison I once read between a poem by Tennyson and one by a Zen poet, where they both appreciate a flower, but whereas the zen poet observes the flower in its environment and continues on their way, Tennyson picks the flower to look at it more closely, thereby killing it in the process. I think it is just in built into western culture that in order to understand something somehow the life of the object has to be taken away. Or at least, the scientific method works by dissection and analysis which inevitably kills the object. It is hard for a very scientific-minded person to understand that other cultures can appreciate something in a holistic way, by contemplating its interconnectedness to the surroundings and the observing the patterns that emerge from the complexity.
Also, this is not related to this video sorry but I wanted to pose this question to you:
I recently read The Rime of the Ancient Mariner for the first time by Samuel Taylor-Coleridge and it’s amazing how many connections there are to Bloodborne, especially during the ‘curse’ episode of the poem where slimy things emerge from the sea, an ‘orphan’s curse’ is mentioned, as well as the curse in the ‘eye of a dead man’, there are supernatural beings judging how much to punish the mariner, and so on. The DLC even figures ballad-type poetry prominently when you enter it and also when the nightmare is finally slain. It really struck me reading it and I’m sure it can’t be a coincidence. Would love to hear your thoughts on this! Perhaps Miyazaki enjoys poetry? Or maybe, as I think happens often, he has been influenced indirectly through other literature that was influenced by Coleridge. Maybe Lovecraft was inspired by Coleridge I don’t know, but I can imagine that being the case as Coleridge was incredible imaginative and almost trippy in some of his writing (maybe brought on from the opium). Would love to hear your thoughts!
Thanks for reminding me about the HeLa stuff, we had to read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks in 11th grade (just a couple years after it was published) and it was genuinely fucked up learning about the fact that she was exploited to such a degree and how her family had no idea so much was attributed in part to her and it’s a little bit heartwarming to see that she’s gotten a lot more recognition in the years since.
Speaking of the Healing Church and mental illness, I keep remembering a dialogue from 12 Monkeys where Bruce's psychiatrist Railly is talking to her colleague about Bruce's doomsday claims. He tells her "[...] You're a trained psychiatrist. You know the difference between what's real and what's not." and she replies "And what we believe is what's accepted as 'truth' now, isn't it, Owen? Psychiatry -- it's the latest religion. And we're the priests -- we decide what's right and what's wrong --we decide who's crazy and who isn't. ...I'm in trouble, Owen. I'm losing my faith."
I don't know about Brotherhood of the Wolf but there is of course a historical link between religion and houses of healing with examples like the Knights Hospitaller and the various succeeding orders of St John.
Speaking to the Western conception of religion, we might have a significant portion of the population who if asked would say they were not religious but if observed might display practices and beliefs that resemble dedication to a religion, especially in regards to social movements. We would just not be used to classifying it as a Religion tm.
This comment is gold! Thank you for shining a light on these very relevant connections!
OOOOOOOOh the triumphant comeback of the boss REDGRAVE ! We Miss you Redgrave !
This is a very cozy reunion. Makes me want to go back to those Aegon let's talk lore episodes.
He's uploading a completed playthrough right now.
I already have that playlist cued up to play after this video is done 😊 Gonna be a real cozy day!
This was a great (bon)fireside chat. The four of you have a good rapport. Having Aegon and/or Redgrave on again for other segments like It Can't Be Helped or Gaming in the Yeltsin Years would be cool.
Oh shit Aegon & Redgrave, defintely going to get tucked in later sometime.
“…Lenin.” 😂😂
This was such a wonderful discussion, as always.
Really interesting episode. I hadn't really thought of biopower as a distinct type of power before. Great stuff, Happy Holidays
I saw Brotherhood of the Wolf in the theater
Me listening to the panopticon conversation, waiting for a VPN ad. 😂
Loool
Have either you or Sophie seen the videos by charred thermos? They discuss historical aspects of Victorian medicine and how they seem to have influenced bloodborne. Sorry if you’ve been asked before, but I love your videos and I just binge watched theirs
This is by far and away one of the best episodes yet. Great job!
Hi Sin and Sophie, I just wanted to thank you for all the great content on this chanel. I am really happy, that there are still people out there making in depth discussions about Bloodborne and Souls. You guys have rekindled my love for the lore and themes of this games and I have spent a lot of time this year bingewatching all your content. It was a great time and also hilarious. Keep it up and a big, big thanks!
After spending the last 3 months of the year sick its great to come back to the world and see new videos! Loved this.
Lovely reunion
I really love your channel. I just discovered it this morning as I looked for something interesting to listen to while working. I ended up rewinding it constantly and eventually just put my feet up and listened properly. Lovely.
Awesome, thank you!
Sin is the best Santa, thank you so much for this
The amount of bloodborne knowledge on display here is wild. Vaati could never
I just realized something. The Hunter's Rune is upside down because it inverts how the hunter interacts with the world; If they die in the real world, they wake up as if it was all a dream - but if Gherman kills them in the dream, they'll wake up. While spirits of the dead dwell in the dream and the living in the waking world, the Hunter is alive in the dream and their immortal spirit is in the waking world, so they're upside down: their feet in the sky and their head to the ground.
That hability to live in the dream might be why the hunter was able to ascend so easily.
I love you guys! I listen to you guys every night and every day at work. You guys are amazing, I’m so glad I found you guys ❤❤❤😊
Absolutely thrilled for this reunion, we love to see it!
What a lovely conversation, it was truly a joy to hear! Hope to see more from the gang soon and happy new year to all!
This was great. It was really nice to hear Aegon and Redgrave. So many smart people talking about such a fantastic game.
That was such an interesting conversation! Thank you for organising this Sin!
I barely kept myself from Excited-Fangirl-Squealing out loud. This podcast is truly a gift. 💜💜💜
AAAAAAAHHHHHH! Missed you all chatting bloodborne together, this just made my day
Great video! I hope you have the chance to host Aegon and Redgrave more often, they had a lot of great insight to add to the discussion. The discussion about the separation of philosophy reminds me of the historical practice of alchemy. There was the material part of alchemy which became the hard science of chemistry but there was also a very spiritual part of to alchemy as well. Dr. Justin Sledge's channel Esoterica hosts a lot of great content on the subject as well other topics.
Seriously return of the goats. So nice hearing yall together again🎉
And we're getting alil polilticalllll noice😊
hahaha I lol'd at orphan of kos footage during the biopolitics segment
thx 4 the editing
love seeing video games looked at through a philosophical lens
What i asked for in a previous video came true!! Woo!! Thanks for the Christmas pressie!!
The concept of madness as a form of perception is a huge plot point of "Jonathan Strange and Dr Norrell" by Susannah Clarke, once Jonathan Strange figures out to beat the gentleman with the thistledown hair he needs to be able to see him, and he can't SEE him without going mad. As opposed to Lovecraft's awareness of the eldritch being mistaken for madness this is a thing that is sought out with a goal [I don't want to spoil it]. The fae and the kin have links [the fine gentlemen of the hills, the ones who came before] but it's - hey maybe he read it, maybe it's a shared source, but I do think it's interesting that it's the "I wanna go mad to SEE" as opposed to "he claims to have seen ergo he must be mad"
in medieval Europe hospitals were church buildings called "hotel-dieu", some of them still exist [there's one in Beaune, France], they had wide halls with beds and genuinely look like the areas in the DLC.
OMG IM SO HAPPY I FINALLY FOUND THIS CHANNEL
great talk!
Great to hear Sin, Sophie and Redgrave back together
I had a question/thought about the "eyes on the inside" as it relates to forcing a certain experience into some sort of independent or natural science that can be explained and manipulated. What if "eyes on the inside" refers to the connection between a mother and a great one fetus. The umbilical cord connects the two and the mother is then able to experience and see from the perspective of the great ones. This would be a state exclusive to women and the men of the healing church are trying to force the same connection in themselves by mimicking this relationship through artificial means that fail. All the named/gendered Great Ones / Kin are female if I recall correctly except perhaps Oedon. Great episode!
This podcast was amazing. I love learning about all these aspects of science and society and how they relate to Bloodborne and the other Souls games. This was the dream team! We just needed Casitive and the team’s complete ❤
That miyazaki part in the begining lmao
Omg an Aegon, Redgrave, JSF (Sophie) reunion. I only finally played Bloodborne like three years ago but I'm already nostalgic for just devouring all their stuff back then. Very good shit. Love you all
Omg im so hyped for this one
Can't believe you are still making content. On this game.
so good
OH MY GOD ITS REDGRAVE
!???
Yup!:)
The thumbnail changing threw me for a loop.
This was excellent *chef's kiss*
Thanks Kyle!
I want Aegon to finish ds3 let's talk lore 🥺
Excellent podcast and great way to wrap up the year.
I think it was Aegon who mentioned that “Obamacare” does not exist here in the states. It’s very much alive and well though some parts such as the mandate were gutted by the Supreme Court. It’s not perfect and the quality of care / access can vary widely by state but in the states where they want it to work, it works well.
So glad y'all did this! excellent work.
I stand corrected! Thanks for this.
Where did you get the music for the pre-stream bit? I kinda love it!
:) ruclips.net/video/uKIZ1rpZONE/видео.html
Is that it? I thought it was something else... Absolutely love your videos by the way! You're one of my fave RUclipsrs 🌟
@@me321ish thanks!
oh you mean the count down? thats a youtube thing that you can set up before the premieres :)
I love Aegon!
We all do haha
Me realising the band is back together
Checks video, sees it very recent
HAPPY.
These pixel animations are gorgeous,
hope you considder designing the thumbnails using pixel art
Very good lore discussion Sin & Soph , please get Redgrave & Aegon on again (would like to see solo vids from them also)
Thanks!!
Nice to have the gang back together
Great Intro!!!!!
So does this mean that the reason the moon presence rejects you if you’ve taken in the cords isn’t because you’re stronger than it, but because it senses you’ve already bonded with another great one and it can’t have you as its child?
Sin, Sophie, I didn't know I could enjoy y'all even more, but when Lenin punched through his old glass coffin and the conversation finally quit dancing around it and addressed capitalism/Neoliberalism from a dialectical materialist perspective, I suddenly felt all the more that I was hearing from my people.
And all power to the people, my classmates! The confluence of Bloodborne literary analysis and class analyses of power are the waters I wanna be swimming in. Like the Pthumerian monarchy and the self-serving Church before them, the imperialist bloodsuckers of our own waking world too shall be cast down and condemned to a nightmare of their own creation!
Edit: *50:16* I kept telling myself not to edit this comment every time I particularly loved something, but as you can see I couldn't help myself in this case. This podcast really does have everything lol, what an outstanding vid this is
;-; welcome to the family
I never read much of Foucault (too ranty for me) but I read a lot of Bauldrillard. Rene Girard is my latest fascination.
Awesome podcast! I've got some trivia for you though! DID YOU KNOW that LECTURE BUILDINGS or LECTURE HALLS (hatto in Japanese) are an obligatory part of a traditional Japanese buddhist temple??? So even dignity city is also a temple and a prison...
Hey Sin! Do you know of a youtuber by the name of Charred Thermos? The guy has like a theory about bloodborne that sounds like the most craziest gibberish you ever heard (basically he tries to prove BB is based on the life and struggles of some brittish poet from 200 years ago) but it makes so much sense... Like, that guy (the poet, I forgot the name already) wrote about blood crystalizing, and paleblood and victorian hospitals, and lost a leg below the knee like you and Gherman do in the game lol. REALLY made me wonder what Sophie and you thought about it. Maybe invite the dude to the podcast??
Hunter's nightmares are like prisons
Only 13min into the video, but I'm beginning to learn about Poststructuralism myself. The book Poststructuralism: A Very Short Introduction was very useful.
How is this possible? All these worlds converging at once. Time is in deed convoluted, yet Floura has blessed us.
6:45 - 7:25 lmfao
XD
Foucault's Elf on the Shelf
I know this is not a popular topic but I wish lore peoples with talk more about how many years things are apart even even if they just guess 😅
Great video👍
Thanks!
@@SinclairLore think you could make more videos about philosophers and bloodborne, if possible?
Wow this doesn’t lead anywhere but you still spent all that time doing it hahahahahaha. Thats funny
Very good! Have you guys considered reviewing Elden Ring? The lore shares similar alchemical/semi Christian era (umbrella corp) themes with the addition of many other religions and occult philosophy with myriads of mystery traditions. It's one of the most untapped lore pools in my opinion, and only a few lore hunters to date have just begun adequately began to interpret the game. There's a million people doing it, but *hardly* anyone is actually piecing it together cohesively.
"Ah Koz ... or some say Kozm." - Reference to "Kosmos" I'd think... Why was that the secret truth? Because the Church killed many of the Old/Elder gods. Maybe even drove them away. The Church is used, but obviously it's not doing much ... a harsh perspective, but I think it's easy to compare to the overall influence the church has on Modern times - monolithic and literally institutional, all but dry and dead.
I see the story as being medical/alchemical allegory for the modern condition - in a sentence. As was mentioned in your video here. An entire sort of society built around ideals that have long since been abandoned, and its progenitors or progeny mad, or long since-insane. Overall, the game is simply just reflecting both the deep-layer implications observed by Lovecraft which inspired his world and crafting it into a mindless slasher for retards. It's a great methodology of story telling, really. Requires educated people to sit around and break it down together to begin to really understand the plot.
Went in expecting lore discussion, came out with irrefutable evidence that we live in a society.
30:00 Another advantage of using this example of unverifiable power in our world. You can keep an eye on different groups of people (race, age, wealth) with a different frequency of punishment and violence for the same bad actions and everything in the system will stay the same, since you can shift the public opinion and the media coverage will convince that it is the best system for keeping the bad apples of society in check, with the unverifiable power and all. When in reality it is a system that can be abused (both in turning a blind eye at times and being too extreme in its actions in others) while wearing the guise of having the best intentions in regard to behaviour correcting.
Oh my god oh my god oh my god
Wow you actually brought up the Johns Hopkins history. Am I on this episode?
so so SO excellent! Thank you to every one of you for sitting down and having this chat.
I do think I've heard that people with schizophrenia outside the west were treated differently though. Not everywhere of course but that in some cultures, hearing voices, etc those people were given honored positions or revered.
Also that schizophrenia has more symptoms of anxiety and paranoia in the west while in other places that kind of paranoia doesn't exist which I think is interesting and may have something to do with settler societies.
Governmentality today has the population living inside a prison where we are the gaurds and the prisoners and we are so proud of this thing we made stuck in perpetual state of skitzophrenia.. ex. you hear alot about people who want to move but never do.
(min 30:40) funny how in italy you graduate you study for years and become a master in your field of study then no one wants to deal with you and pay you enough, so you still end up working in contexts in which they don't need all your skills and preparation. Example, many who ended the university studies and even masters, can't find a proper job here but have to work at mc donalds, or they have to move to other countries. And this is the case expecially for science related jobs. The older generations hate on us and think we don't wanna work because we're lazy. Yeah the only problem is we can't buy houses as easily as they did, we can't get to the end of the month with a misery of a salary and we're generally considered useless and untrusted. I'm afraid for my future, i don't wanna move out but it feels like I'm forced to by this old and dilapidated country
This is very much the position I'm in right now, as well. Good luck
@@SinclairLore goodluck to you :3
Hi Sophie, hi sin. I loved the video and great to see Aegon. I wanted to ask if you two had seen the Laurence video by Charred Thermos? It's a very interesting video that looks a bit into the dissection themes of Bloodborne, and also a unique proposal on Laurence's history.
ringing the bell for queen yarhnam
Y'all are true originals. Love how much TLC you pour into your content 🫶
Aww thanks so much! Your content is amazing!
The aca hasn't been repealed. The individual mandate was the only part The trump admin was able to reverse, by setting it to 0.
I remember a video from years ago where Sophie made a comment in passing about this and now I see the title of this video in my recommended. Honestly, this is among the very best Soulsborne lore channels.
Come for the Bloodborne and stay for the education.
Так рад видеть вас в вместе опять❤
Spasiba!
I miss red grave
I passed it on.
"While I appreciate that Andy, I do still exist!"
Hi sophie. Hi sin. Eight days ago everything. Hi Redgrave Hi Eric. It hurts to say, but I couldn't Outlast you, Madame sinister
yo redgrave stop duckin me in GG
holy crap i read the paleblood hunt cover to cover and had a little fangirl moment hearing Redgrave enter the chat
The dream team back together again. Am I the only one who, while enjoying Elden ring is disappointed we won’t have PHD’s and scholars still finding things to talk about in 9 years.
Please do more of these. This was fascinating.
This was a great conversation! I didn't think to look at bloodborne from a political/sociological lens. I've also never seen a podcast on youtube actually given production value like this! Lol. #penpenpals_GuestStars

this is easily top 10 eps. sin went for quality over quantity especially with the editing starting at 25:00 (camera, wallet clip, classroom) and then hittin em with the Lenin a few min later. more sin tho
