Have you ever looked at how much sodium is in one of those ramen packages? I forget the number but it was like 75% of your daily intake, iirc
Sodium is really only a problem for people who have a sensitivity to it. A lot of the fears about sodium are thanks to a flawed study sponsored by the sugar lobby in the 70's, IIRC. A far more important thing to watch your intake of (unsurprisingly) is sugar. Sugar is way more dangerous than people realize. Sugar adheres perfectly to our definitions for both "drug" and "addictive." It's not just a little addictive either- it's highly addictive; sugar, in obese people, produces approximately 500% the addiction response that cocaine does in cocaine addicts.) Plus, sugar causes all kinds of diseases from gingivitis to obesity and diabetes to heart disease.

I worked in Corrections for our small local Jail. The inmates had a version of this where they would save taco meat, cheese, salsa and sour cream from taco salad day and crush up the plain tortilla chips. Add yhito lime chili ramen. I copied the recipe and made it at home. Changed my life 😂😂😂

When I was in jail my cell mate was the guy everybody went to to make food. People would give him all the ingredients needed and he'd make something from pies to spreads. I still make spreads to this day because I love the taste

@@makenzieswanner709 When I was 17 I was arrested for possession and they charged me as an adult. I was able to plead down and got put on 3 years probation but I "violated" my probation a year later for something really small and was arrested again which was when I learned how to make spreads. The judge eventually dismissed my violation charge though so it all worked out in the end.

When I did a short stint in jail, the best meal was my last night. They threw a bunch of stuff in a bag, with warm water (ramen, corn, beans, etc). It looked atrocious but they insisted it was fire. And it was. Plus, jail food is literally D grade quality so using commissary items was key to surviving. Great episode, needs more slim Jim for sure tho.

I TRIED THE FUNYUNS. And what a lovely idea y'all had, it totally works! Very good with a healthy helping of curry powder before adding water. Just make sure to mush it up pretty good; the inside is totally crunch if you don't. Highly recommend. My mother even liked it!
We used top buy big bags of corn chips, crush them into dust. Add a little water and make a dough. Put in a trash bag and roll it out with cups about 4 feet long. Split the trash bag open and fill with some spread then roll it up like a burrito. Jalapeno squeeze cheese on top. Rico's cheese is bomb af too, mix a lil bit of the ramen season pack in the cup of cheese and a lil water and put on top.

But yet somewhat scary
Having tried this, and making some adjustments for a more economic and taste:
Summer sausage works just as well as slim jim's, and you can get more burritos out of the same cost in summer sausage
Half a can of corn helps add a missing texture to the mix, otherwise the taste gets old fast, and reminds me a bit of bland cornbread until it's added
Feel free to add salsa to it afterwords, definitely helps build the flavor profile.
i used to make these in H.O.C. (house of corrections in wisconsin) theres different ways to make these based on preference or ingredients available. At HOC theres a farm dorm and workers would sneak peppers back in to add in.

I went to a friend's place last night, and some other buddies came over who are moving away back to Portland. My friend wanted them to show us how to make these. We just used the ramen bag itself, but we did add crushed Doritos and some cut up Slim Jims. We did it a lot like this, but like you said, everyone does it a bit differently. Truth be told, it was really good! We had some queso and Srirachi on hand for our sauces. This would actually make for a fun food truck idea with different sauces or foods inside. I may be making more of these at home.
