Great rock band from the 70's-80's. They had so many great songs such as "Lorelei", "Suite Madame Blue", "Lady", "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)", "Babe", "The Best Of Times", "Mr. Roboto", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Show Me The Way", "Don't Let It End", "Why Me", "Borrowed Time", "Rockin' The Paradise" etc.
This beautiful piece by Styx came out in 1977, my sophomore year in high school and it was voted as the song of the year in our yearbook. It was on "The Grand Illusion" and every song on there is a masterpiece. I went to see them perform this in 1979, and after over 100 concerts is still one of my top 5. This song still hits me with emotions each time I hear it. Thanks for your review.
I can’t believe they didn’t do the middle instrumental part!! It’s the best part, IMO, but I’m a prog guy anyway. It’s completely different and really fun. It’s heavily synthesizer and kind of foreshadows the “starship” theme. You should listen to the studio version.
The song was TOO LONG for most radio playback, this is the shortened version, very common in the 1970s (just happens to have a video as well which is not too common).
@@raccoon874 I only listened to album rock stations in the 70s, so I've never heard this butchered version. =/ The radio edits of Frankenstein and Radar Love aren't even as bad as this.
Exactly! I always feel a little let down when reactors listen to the short version. It just feels incomplete. That missing instrumental accentuates the part of the song that follows it.
This is from my childhood, they weren't everybody's cup of tea, but I've always loved the sound. I remember our 3rd grade teacher threw together a choir and we sang "renegade"
Dennis DeYoung the lead singer and primary writer for Styx wrote a song Babe for his wife's birthday. He cut a demo, and it sounded so good they put it on their next album. All the vocals are DeYoungs on the demo. There is a live version which I think he sang to his wife on her birthday.
Great song!! Sad this particular video cut out a good portion of the song. Schnell loved it though and hope she will react to more by Styx. My nephew's band covered this song and I have a video of them on my channel. He is the drummer.
Love your reactions. You get the gist of the track in this version but it cuts out one of the best musical interludes ever written. I hope youll check out the studio version on your own. The instrumentation is phenomenal.
I saw them twice, in '78 for the "Pieces of Eight" tour an in '83 for the "Kilroy Was Here" tour. In '78 it was in a small, 2,500 seat arena, amazing show.
Styx is one of the greats. You should also react to Tommy Shaw, the guitar player who also has an equally great voice as him and still puts amazing shows today as solo artist. Check out an special he did with an orchestra of young college musicians where they played maybe 4 songs of them... and it is really pretty spectacular. Great song. I remember seeing this same video and maybe 7-8 more songs in a movie theater here in Mexico maybe back in 1980, when there was no Mtv yet. Music videos or tv corcerts where not an easy thing to see on tv, so looking back, it is really weird and funny to do that in a place like that, which now explains to me why Mtv was created for in the first place. People really enjoys seeing artists performing, and I remember all the persons there in the theater were really excited to see them play. Great reaction, I enjoyed it.
Fred, from Kentucky. Come SAIL away...from the sixties. I grew up to music of the 60's 70's when I was a kid, Surfing the California Coast! PROUD to have been a part of it....WOODSTOCK, ETC. LONG LIVE ROCK & ROLL! I am 76 yrs old now and STILL Rock'in...💙💞🌊⚘️
The drumming in Come Sail Away is, possibly, the most powerful I've ever heard ... it is absolutely fantastic. Listen to the song and concentrate on the drumming - it adds so much it is incredible. Despite Styx having a whole list of GREAT songs, I saw them in concert this past summer ('23) and hearing/seeing this song live made the whole night.
Styx is from Illinois. Same with Richard Marx, REO Speedwagon, Veruca Salt. Styx has been compared to Queen 👸. 1 of the hit songs in 1970s classic rock 🎸. Produced by Styx. Written by Dennis DeYoung. He was in keyboards and lead vocals. He quit in 2000. The other lead singer is Tommy Shaw. He is also on lead guitar 🎸 . He also plays with Damn Yankees. I list their songs, solo and group, below. Suggested videos 📹: 1 Styx performs Babe 2 Styx performs Love at First Sight 3 Styx performs Too Much Time on My Hands 4 Dennis DeYoung performs Desert 🏜 Moon 🌙 5 Damn Yankees perform High Enough. Good 👍 reaction 😆
Thanks for your reaction they did make beautiful music i met them in 78 when i was a Police Officer at the airport in St Louis Missouri and had a great convasation with them a good friend of mine was their sound engineer at the time and for many years and he stayed in contacted with the band members untill he passed a few years ago
Dennis DeYoung is one of the best storytellers in music. You have just reacted to a song from the first concert I went to in 1977 . STYX Grand Illusion tour. Was only 12 at the time and it blew me away changed my direction in life. Never been the same again. The music of the time was phenomenal. I cannot give the words and give it justice. It has to be witnessed to truly understand the emotions and feelings it drew out of my generation. Glad you enjoyed 🎉
A perfectly layered rock song...I was in high school when this album dropped.. Styx were very well received back then. Now, sadly they are fading in the dark night like all the great music.
You need to check out the uncut version of Come Sail Away. The best part is missing. Also check out the live version of the Styx masterpiece, Suite Madam Blue, and Renegade.
This video gives you the lyrical basis of the song but misses out on the instrumental interlude before the last verse that brings out the alien sounds that leads to the final verse about aliens as well as a killer guitar solo. Still a great song but do yourself a favor and listen to the actual studio version. You won’t regret it
Great early ballads: Lady & Babe are worth reactions + hits from Paradise Theatre album too. There's also a Lady remake single. Tommy Shaw (Guitar soloist today) can also sing well w/ Fooling Yourself. All great songs.
Someone below mentioned doing "Babe". Either that or "Lady" should be next. Either one would be a reaction to do. Heck, do both at some point. There are a good dozen songs from Styx that would make for great reaction videos.
Have you listened to the Canadian 80's famine relief song, "Tears are not Enough" by whole bunch of top Canadian artists of the time calling themselves "Northern Lights". This came out just after the American USA for Africa one.
Great to see you again, Schnnell. Love you and your reactions! Kudos, Sweetie! PS. Would you PLEASE react to Styx, the song, Suite Madame Blue, the live version? It will blow your mind. It is fire! Take care!
This my dear is what is called music. The stuff you been listening to that is written lately is the equivalent of baby food (cold liquified carrots right out of the jar.)
Keep listening Styx is a great band with many great albums. I'm sorry I don't remember the year, but I was a teenager, I'm an old fart now. Styx is one of my very favorites. Try some Kansas too.
This version of the song is called the "radio edit", which cuts out the instrumental part. You might have noticed that there was a cut in the video between the first chorus and "I thought that they were angels...". That is where the instrumental part would be. There is also an even shorter version that also cuts out the part of the verse that starts with "I look to the sea...", along with the instrumental part. That is the "single version". Back in the 1960's and 1970's, radio stations tended to want only songs that were less than 4 minutes, so record companies made edited versions. That way they could play more songs and still leave time for a lot of commercials. You should definitely try to listen to the full album version, which runs 6 minutes 10 seconds.
Other great songs by Styx to react to: Suite Madame Blue, Man In The Wilderness, Pieces of Eight, Renegade, Miss America, Blue Collar Man, Babe, Boat On The River, Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion, Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man).
This album (Titled The Grand Illusion) was first released in July, 1977. My freshman year of high school). If you enjoyed this hacked and slashed version of this song, then you REALLY need to hear the studio version. While there, I also highly recommend you listen to the title track and suggest you have the lyrics handy just to follow along and avoid any misinterpretations. That song is still as relevant today as it was then. The lyrics really opened a lot of eyes and minds through the years
Check to LP version of this song..As a musician, I know you'll love the CODA in the middle they left off the 45. Keep picking the great classics, sweetie!
In Greek mythology, "STYX" was a goddess and river of the Underworld. Her parents were the Titans Oceanus and Tethys, and she was the wife of the Titan Pallas, and the mother of Zelus, Nike, Kratos, and Bia. She sided with Zeus in his war against the Titans, and because of this, to honor her, Zeus decreed that the solemn oaths of the gods be sworn by the water of Styx.
Lots of good stuff from this band. Strongest albums pobably Equinox through Paradise Theatre. Many consider Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight their best.
If you want to dive deeper into Styx, But doing with a little twist, check out Tommy Shaw and the youth contemporary orchestra doing Foolin yourself. The youth contemporary orchestra is an amazing group of for lack of a better term, kids, playing and singing along with Tommy Shaw rock songs Tommy Shaw was the guitar player, and one of the lead singers of Styx.
You had the short version of this song. The full version runs about another four minutes - you missed some of the best parts of this particular song. And, interestingly enough, Cartman (South Park) did a version of this song as well.... I think it's on RUclips somewhere...
I'd like to recommend a country rock group from the 70s called Poco and their hit keep on trying they have many hits but that's one of my favorite songs by them
I grew up listening to these guys. I don't care much for Dennis' voice after they recorded "Babe" which I despise, but they have a nice catalog of great music.
This is the "shortened" radio version. It IS the studio version. It is NOT a live version, but the middle solo section was cut out. The transition out of that solo, back into the rest of the song (which is missing from this version) is the best part of the song. It's CRIMINAL to use this shortened version. Here's the "real" album version, and the "missing" part starts at 3:15. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/eYCFrcCqh7Q/видео.htmlsi=bsLjPqk9ozxhEPnG
Styx has more awesome songs than almost any other band. You could start by listening to Styx greatest hits 1 and 2. Another some other great song you could check out of theirs is Lady and Suite Madam Blue and Sweet Mademoiselle
Yes you need to hear the full version that includes an incredible synthesizer solo. It makes this already great classic about 10 times better.
agreed.
It's just not the same without it...sigh.
just not the sames you need to hear the full version
100% agree, you don't get the full feeling of the song without the instrumental part

Correct year. The 70s were great, musically ( and in other ways).
Yes every song is a masterpiece! Castle Walls is a favorite!🏰🎶
This was their 7th album, and was released 07/07/77. Every song on "The Grand Illusion" is top notch.
As someone said "Music is the closest thing we have to a time machine." Great, classic tune.
I can’t believe they didn’t do the middle instrumental part!! It’s the best part, IMO, but I’m a prog guy anyway. It’s completely different and really fun. It’s heavily synthesizer and kind of foreshadows the “starship” theme. You should listen to the studio version.
True. The interlude with the futuristic instrumentals is what makes the song complete.
The song was TOO LONG for most radio playback, this is the shortened version, very common in the 1970s (just happens to have a video as well which is not too common).
Its a live version.
@@raccoon874 I only listened to album rock stations in the 70s, so I've never heard this butchered version. =/

You have to listen to 'Babe' by Styx. Dennis DeYoung wrote it to his wife as a birthday present. They've been married for 53 years now.
Anything from their Grand Illusion album is gold.
I saw Styx live in Ft. Myers, Fl. When this song was performed the entire venue sang along! It is a staple song from the time. A timeless classic!🎸🤘
Eeww, this was the cut in half version made for mtv. You need to hear the whole song, you missed out on 2 min more
I didn't even know this existed. I was caught so off guard
As was I.
Yea it's missing quite a bit
My guy said "ew" 😂😂😂😂
Dennis DeYoung the lead singer and primary writer for Styx wrote a song Babe for his wife's birthday. He cut a demo, and it sounded so good they put it on their next album. All the vocals are DeYoungs on the demo. There is a live version which I think he sang to his wife on her birthday.
i was a teenager in the 70s and imo the greatest decade of rock
I love how you enjoy the music from the 70's. You indeed would have dug living back then.
Great song!! Sad this particular video cut out a good portion of the song. Schnell loved it though and hope she will react to more by Styx. My nephew's band covered this song and I have a video of them on my channel. He is the drummer.
The " Return To Paradise " LIVE Concert is AWESOME, Take a Look at it !!!
One of the most classic songs in its time. It would be a hit in any era!
Love your reactions. You get the gist of the track in this version but it cuts out one of the best musical interludes ever written. I hope youll check out the studio version on your own. The instrumentation is phenomenal.
I like this song. I saw them with Nancy Wilson from the band Heart here in Lethbridge Alberta last October. Mr Roboto rocks also.
I saw them twice, in '78 for the "Pieces of Eight" tour an in '83 for the "Kilroy Was Here" tour.
In '78 it was in a small, 2,500 seat arena, amazing show.
You know, I'll guzzle beer with AC/DC as much as I'll swill wine with Styx! That soaring arena rock just never gets old!
Around 1977. Came out on the Grand Illusion album. '77 was one of the most epic years for rock album releases

I have to say, the song is beautiful and so are you ! Love your nails. Try Madam Blue by STYX
Saw them live for the Grand Illusion tour…..great show, strong musicianship and great vocals….you know just another band I grew up with😜
That song was our high school senior class song. 1978. Great Reaction. Thanks!
This song is from the album The Grand Illusion released in 1977.
Sauce sticks in 1976 with Queen and Kansas it was a great concert
Saw them do this live in 1978
Hi shennel I love styx..old songs but good memories❤️
Yes . . . you need to hear the FULL version as they left out a verse and a longer instrumental. Glad to see you chose this one. This was from 1980-81!
I saw them in concert when this album was first released. Dennis and his piano rose up from below the stage as he played this. The crowd went nuts.
This band has been under appreciated for years.
just like Cheap Trick
This song has an impact the 100 time you hear it. Hell, most music back then does. It was life, someone's. And many related.

I was referring to my friend who was their sound engineer who passed away a couple years ago
Hi it’s off The seventh Styx album Grand Illusion released in 1977.🎸

A perfectly layered rock song...I was in high school when this album dropped.. Styx were very well received back then. Now, sadly they are fading in the dark night like all the great music.
Thanks for reacting to this classic.
You have to listen the long version with instrumental part. It's the best version.
It's impossible to not appreciate this song.
They found their fortune🤑🤑
This is their encore song
saw them in concert in 1977 they did this song
بسیار زیبا و عالی بود.صداش بی نظیره😍👍👍👍

I don't remember the exact year. Late 70s, i saw Styx on the Grand illusion tour.
Styx. Suite Madame Blue

Great to see you again, Schnnell.
Love you and your reactions!

PS. Would you PLEASE react to Styx, the song, Suite Madame Blue, the live version?
It will blow your mind. It is fire!
Take care!
This my dear is what is called music.

Schnell i can't believe you never heard this. It's a iconic band and yes they are amazing. And yes you look gorgeous as always 🥰❤️

those kids looked like they were having the time of their lives
Hi Schell, I'm a Musician and had the honor to be a backup band when I was 17
Always use the full version of every song. This is a short radio version longer album version exists
Since you’re Canadian how about checking out Big Wreck. Ian Thornley is a phenomenal guitar player and great singer. So good.
You had the short version of this song. The full version runs about another four minutes - you missed some of the best parts of this particular song. And, interestingly enough, Cartman (South Park) did a version of this song as well.... I think it's on RUclips somewhere...
Imagine going to an EXCELLENT restaurant... and right after the appetizer, the waiter served dessert. That's what this version of this song is. 😢
I'd like to recommend a country rock group from the 70s called Poco and their hit keep on trying they have many hits but that's one of my favorite songs by them

This is from 1977. They DO still make music of this quality - check out War On Drugs " old skin" or " in chains"
You need to react to the song Lady by Styx.
styx always sounded like they were from some other time.
You need longer version best than shorter version and That is my favorite song all time since i was kid!!!!
If you like this, you'll love Kansas!
BTW, the whole album KICKS!
The song Delaram by Hamed Zamani is also very beautiful. I recommend you listen to it
That was the short version
Styx has more awesome songs than almost any other band. You could start by listening to Styx greatest hits 1 and 2. Another some other great song you could check out of theirs is Lady and Suite Madam Blue and Sweet Mademoiselle
This is a great song yes, but my favorite by them is "Babe" which he wrote for his wife. Schnell you should do a reactions video for it!!
