70 here Short of Sunday singing in our Church this is some of the best music and singing ever done. God bless Bobby with an angelic voice and he sure shares it here.
Incredible talent....walks out onto a stage, alone..no background singers, cold, no auto-tune, no studio gimmicks..and drops one of the greatest live performances in music history. Peace....
I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.
Nobody, absolutely nobody can sing it like Bobby Hatfield. I was in the first grade when I saw him on the Andy Williams Show sing this song. Totally captivating!!! My mom and dad jaws dropped hearing him.

He does it all with no emotion on his face. The brothers from New Orleans has the most popular brother who looks like he’s been constipated for a month with every song he sings.
It’s an early reaction, when all she’s seen is just Bobby standing there singing. You don’t see the band. He doesn’t dance (which to me is actually a huge difference from today). He’s got a great suit on, but there’s no glitter. He’s got no visible tattoos. Other than the little smile, he doesn’t make facial gestures. He’s a really good looking dude, but in today’s world, he would be considered metrosexual at the very least, but back then, he would be seen as wholesomely romantic. That’s what she means y simple, not the singing at all.
I call this "Bobby's Song." Even though it was first recorded by great artists as Al Hibbler and Roy Hamilton in the '50's, also Elvis, NO ONE ever sang it as beautifully as Bobby Hatfield, and there are so many of his and Bill's music that is so great, and so underrated. But Bobby is in a class by himself. He could sing ANY genre' he chose, and make it his alone. He is sorely missed, but he left a legacy of beautiful music to be enjoyed for years to come. Love you, Bobby!
About the microphone, he wasn't supposed to use that one. That was the pedestal mic, we had a larger (longer) one all set up at stage center that was supposed to be handed to him, but he just grabbed the smaller one from the pedestal instead. Just one of those "mistakes" you go with. I think you're wrong about the nasal constituents, he was vey good with using his diaphragm when singing which almost always precludes a "hollow" nasal tonal quality. Yes, we were also told his mother was present that night, just left of stage center, 2nd row (if you watch real close in the video, he looks that direction several times during the performance). Also, the performance was taped at a venue across the road from the original Disneyland, in Anaheim, CA, when they were booked to work the Andy Williams show. I didn't much care for the place, actually. The acoustics were OK but not great, and setting up for good sound took a lot of work. It was a long, long time ago, but I always enjoyed working with them (Righteous Brothers, Spector not so much). They were just so human and great to be around, joke with, grab a burger, or party with. Like Ken and Karen Carpenter. And watching Bobby perform, he made it seem like having a cup of coffee was harder work than singing. I never saw that man break a sweat ! And their talent was so profound we really thought something really great was being produced through their performances.
Thank you for your insight as well your memories!! 👍 I had the privilege of seeing the Righteous Brothers at Universal Studios outdoors and at their small intimate supper club in the early 80s in Orange County. Always near and dear to my heart. 🙏
Plus the fact that all Bobby had to do was stand there with that little mic in his hand, sing that song, and a whole nation of women fell in love, including me! I still am.
She is used to cordless microphones. She hasn't noticed the cord attached to the one Bobby is using. Loved this performance when I saw it on Andy Williams. Nasal! Head voice? Is she listening to the same thing we are?
The Righteous Brothers version is actually not the original either. But it was just another ballad until Bobby (Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers) made it ICONIC!!
It was the title song of the 1957 movie ‘Unchained’, which starred Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier. That’s where the name comes from. But nobody thought much of it until these guys sang it.
No no no. That is not head voice, it is within his awesome vocal range which extends up into the counter tenor range. He had an unbelievable voice, easily gliding into that high C that sopranos often strain for. He was truly remarkable..
Truly MASTERFUL. By far this is the best version. His range, modulations are unmatched! In addition; his ease of VOCAL QUALITY..And he has you concentrating on his song by not distracting you by gyrating all over the stage.
IMHO the greatest live performance in the history of pop music. And this isnt a nasal or head tone. This is a pure counter tenor. Literally 1 in a million.
Oh so sad that you thought Elvis was only performer of this song. Elvis had his day but let this unbelievable talented performer have his. So glad you got to experience this as such young vibrant girl. Much love youngun
No-one did it like Bobby. Wonderful voice, great range, from baritone to full counter-tenor, he made it look so effortless. The natural break (which sounded like a yodel) isn't used much these days. You need a certain elasticity in the throat to achieve it. His breath control was excellent too. Women melted on hearing him.
Best version hands down of this classic song. Absolutely loved the Righteous Brothers. Sadly we recently lost Bobby Hatfield. He had a beautiful one of a kind voice. Austin Brown from Home Free did a very beautiful tribute of this song.
Well, I don't know if you would call it recently. Bobby Hatfield died on November 5, 2003, at the age of 63. There will never be another like him. Bill Medley, the other half of the duo, is still performing at the age of 81.
You need to go back almost 30 years to hear Englishman Paul Salvage do a knock down outstanding version of this song on a British TV show. And BTW Bobby Hatfield died in November of 2003. He has been gone 18 years now.
He sings so effortlessly and his vocals are just gorgeous. I have yet to see a singer today that hit notes like that so effortlessly. This music is just magical!
Bob Hatfield, what a voice and what a feeling.... he's just awesome and amazing. Thanks to all of you, the people who love this song. The most perfect voice ever. Absolutely flawless. This particular love song it has special meaning to me mostley during the Vietnam war for us who want to back home alive. This is such a melodically beautiful love song with an absolutely stunning performance. Bob Hatfield's voice is so incredible, it doesn't seem right that we will never here his voice live again. It makes me want to weep it's so beautiful. In my 72 years, I have never heard anything as beautiful as this it brought tears and emotion in my life. Good song never die. Thanks to you noble friend. Good work and continued to present beautiful pop song.
Very well said. I have been in love with Bobby since 1963. His voice is unmatchable. A lot of people think those high notes are "Falsetto." Not so, Bobby was a "countertenor," with a natural high-register. Listen closely, and you will not here the strain, the facial stress of trying to reach those high notes. No strain at all, so easy for him. That lip-bite at the end said, "I nailed it!"
@@dawnaberry8452 That lip-bite at the end said, "I nailed it!" Absolutely true! He stepped on that stage to make a mark that evening. He knew he had delivered. 56 years later, young women still are brought to tears when they hear a recording made with 56 year old technology. He delivered a classic that will last well beyond our lifetimes.
This was the most listened to and danced to song of its time. This song was sung at nearly every wedding back in the sixties and early 70’s. The U.S. birthrate numbers doubled when this song hit the airwaves.
One Man with his Microphone, No Autotune, No Backup dancers, No Pyrotechnics, just Talent! Glad you’re going back to the Roots of Rock’n’ Roll…..SanJoséBob
Bobby Hatfield owns this song! I was only 4 when he performed this particular version. I didn't discover any of this until a few years later. There's no one that does it better than Bobby! So good and a great song.
If you want to get the full emotional feeling of songs like this, try, please try, not to pause so much. Analyse at the end if you must but just feel it. Music should stir your emotions.
Exactly. Back in the day when we first heard these songs none of us even THOUGHT about interpreting the lyrics or trying to extract a message. They were LOVE songs. It was all about the SOUND and how it felt.
Jordan, you said “Beautiful.” Yes, he was!!! And so was his music. 😍 Bobby Hatfield stood and delivered. No auto tune, no fog machines, no dancers, no fancy lighting and other stuff. He just stood with that small microphone and sang his heart out. He seemed as if he was singing to each woman. I was 23 when he performed this live on the Andy Williams Show. His parents were in the audience for the first time and he was nervous. Find the You Tube with Andy’s intro for the Righteous Brothers this night and you will hear how breathless Bobby is. He was very nervous. Just precious. I hunger for a return of this type sincere, kind and gentle music. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
This is THE best piece of "mood music" ever written. If playing this song doesn't get your significant other "in the mood," break up immediately. They aren't that into you.
Live, no auto tune, no computers, pure talent, real instruments. his parents were in the audience, this was the Andy Williams show a national show everyone could see....big pressure, live TV, he nailed it beyond belief. He does not do this on the recording, and the recording went t #3 in August 1965.
Great Reaction! ..Bobby’s Hatfields voice still pulls the ❤ strings of ladies today , as it did 50 plus years ago. Many ladies feel that His voice was so velvety, buttery, pulling on the heart strings of ladies of the past , present and future will for ever upon listening to this tremendous song will fall in love over and over again with unchained melody! ..Here are a few more for your reaction : “ I just wanna make love to you, love and inspiration, you’ve lost that that feeling”
Love your reaction and I'm glad you are reaching back to the universe of great music from the "oldies"! The song wasn't originally sung by them. It was originally released as the score for the movie Unchained in 1955 and was sung by several people after that, but their version is UNDOUBTLY the best before and since (IMHO).
It's actually a song written for a prison movie, about the person in prison thinking of a sweetheart. However the righteous Brothers are the ones who made it the most famous , and in my opinion did the best job. 👍😊
The song was not written for the movie. Maybe it was enhanced in some way then. It was written about 1936. The author did not his love to the girl he wrote it for and she married someone else. He sat on the song for 19 years until some guys with awesome voices recorded it. I read somewhere or heard that over 600 people have sung the song. Bobby's is my favorite.
I saw Bobby Hatfield around 1974 at the old Academy of Music on 14th St. in NYC. The show was billed as the Righteous Brothers but Bill Medley wasn’t there. When Bobby came out alone the crowd booed. Bobby explained that the promoter was at fault, then he proceeded to blow the roof off of the theatre. I’ve seen many shows, many of the greats from that era and later. I have never seen a more pure, more powerful, more soulful, more professional performance, ever. The same crowd that booed him, gave such long standing ovations that Bobby did 3 encores. It was an incredible performance!
He said he was so scared to sing this song because for the first Time both his parents were in the audience and you can tell when you first started off he was very nervous but he nailed it
I remember this song from the 1950s. In 1965 I was in the Army ( Infantry ) serving overseas doing my bit, and hearing this version remineded us of home in the UK and our girlfriends. I served 30 PROUD YEARS IN THE British Army retiring 1960 , now I am nearly 80 , and still listening to all the old favourites from back then. Thankyou for brining back happy memories.
I love the old classics. One for you to check out is “All I Have to Do is Dream” by the Everly Brothers. My quartet is currently learning a Barbershop arrangement of this for our annual show in October.
Once you have heard this song you will never forget it. I was a young teen when it was released, and it still holds a grip on me. The best slow dance song ever recorded. You didn't have to analyze it or think about it. Just have your arms around your woman and get lost in your own little world. Thanks for sharing.
Live on the Andy Williams Show ... Bobby was nervous as his parents were in the audience... Pure... No Auto-tune... Nothing but pure magic. These types performances while live there was just a warmup in the afternoon and then done in one take... Rarely was there the time or need for any sort of a re-shoot
This is a different rendition then on the record because it’s live and the one on the record is marvelous. You know I can listen to it every day, but the live performance is incredible because it’s just one man and one mic. His range is incredible. He’s a countertenor.
What Bobby is doing is bringing in lots of harmonics to the basic melody line. It shows how really talented he is in capturing every bit of each phrase. And, it's perfect!
Bobby was tremendous. No one has ever sang this better. Many have tried. No one sings it as great as Bobby. Even Elvis. That really is unbelievable but true.
Haven't checked in with you for awhile, Schnell, must say whatever you've been doing is looking mighty good on you. Saw this when he did it on the Andy Williams show (pretty much everyone watched that show), it was a stunning performance just as it is now. Best rendition of this song ever.
You're correct. 5 full octaves. The last note he hit was high even for a female. It was almost off the keyboard. Anything higher he would have been whistling. RIP Bobby.
His beautiful sound was known in the 60's as "blue-eyed soul". His voice draws out emotions now, almost 60 years later, as much as it did then. Your reaction is priceless!!!
Done live on the Andy Williams TV show....with Bobby's mom & dad in the audience. Live 1 take.....no magic electronic "vocalizer" fixing you off key notes. On the longer version Andy and Bill Medley (the other Righteous Brother) walk out still clapping. Andy turns to Bobby....sticks out his hand to shake Bobby's hand. The look of respect on Andy's face is unbelievable. Andy Williams was a GREAT singer and we could tell he was blown away by Bobby's performance.
Bobby Hatfield nailed this song EFFORTLESSLY and with such raw emotion you could feel it. Grew up listening to Righteous Bros. and wish music today was not auto tuned. For Bobby it was just a man, his orchestra, and a microphone. May he rest forever in eternal peace.
In the '60's they were going for a refined look and wanted to de-emphasize the distraction of microphone technology. Notice he is using the same technique as Steve Perry from Journey - singing across the top of the mic, rather than singing straight into the mic. That removes risks of hisses and pops, it lets the boominess of the voice to fall off and you get a nice clear vocal tone.
Live performance in front of a live audience on live TV on the Andy Williams Show. This was done with a live studio orchestra, also. Absolutely terrific.
Hi Schnell!!! Jeez, I didn't realize that you hadn't reacted to so much "classic" music :-) Anyway, I assume you are mostly interested in reacting to vocalist centric tunes and preferably Live. So, here are a few: --- "Let's Stay Together" -- an early version of Al Green live on his channel --- "White Rabbit" -- Jefferson Airplane on 'The Smothers Brothers Show' 1967 --- "A Man Needs a Maid" -- Neil Young on the BBC 1971 --- "Rhiannon" -- Fleetwood Mac on 'The Midnight Special' 1976
I'm so late to this. Great reaction. It was fun to see you react to a song you knew, but never having heard The Righteous Brothers do it. One of the greatest singers of all time, and quite probably the greatest duo of all time (Bill is of course with him in others). I subscribed, because I have seen other videos of yours (my run watching Nightwish reactions lol) and you're very good. If you haven't, I'd suggest checking out Dolores O'Riordian of the Cranberries, for another unique voice, in some ways related to this song (though not going as far back), due to her vocal style. Another of the most unique and greatest singers to have graced us. Zombie, Linger and/or her cover of Go Your Own Way (where it's an acoustic breakdown and you really can focus on her). Speaking of Fleetwood Mac, you must know them, but they're of course good too!

Truly MASTERFUL. By far this is the best version. His range, modulations are unmatched! In addition; his ease of VOCAL QUALITY..And he has you concentrating on his song by not distracting you by gyrating all over the stage.
Schnell, you'll love Bobby's range and pitch. And this is live with just Bobby and a mic and an audience. One of my favorite performances.
Please react to morissette amon unchained melody version.. You gonna love it.. I'll promise..😊😊😊
probably the most perfect and talented live performance ever performed, he makes the very technical vocals sound so easy.
I sooooo agree. The chords this performance strikes in the human heart...are amazing.
He's the reason for the phrase "Blue Eyed Soul".... MASTERPIECE
Its called pure opera talent with no auto tune used by modern singers. This might be the finest LIVE performance in history.
IMHO the greatest live performance in the history of pop music. And this isnt a nasal or head tone. This is a pure counter tenor. Literally 1 in a million.
@@TheTedterrific Yes, I agree..the greatest live performance...
He gives me goosebumps every time. It's effortless.
Back in the day singers actually had talent and didn't require effects to sound GOOD.
Austin Brown is exceptional and true to Bobby’s version except at the end. Austin doesn’t attempt the high falsetto ending Bobby did.
FYI, that was not a falsetto. Bobby has a five octave range!@@Outtahereasap
Pure talent! Just Bobby ..the orchestra..and a microphone.Rest in peace .. you were awesome!
Those vocals are definitely not simple but he makes them seem effortless and that’s the magic. Pure talent.
Bobby Hatfield was only 24 and so talented. I've loved this song over 55 years. Thanks for the memories.
@Rosa Morales: He was 25 when he did this performance (the "Andy Williams Show").
No autotune, no gimmicks. Pure, raw, unadulterated talent.
He sings so effortlessly and his vocals are just gorgeous. I have yet to see a singer today that hit notes like that so effortlessly. This music is just magical!
Check out dimash kudaibergen then... Another incredible talent
Pure raw talent! I was 15 years old when he sang this song in 1965 on Andy Williams show. I still enjoy listening to him. RIP Bobby! ❤
No one sing like Bobby Hatfield. Live, no editing, no second chances....FANTASTIC!
This is live with no auto tune. Bobbie has The Voice that melts hearts. yes, even mine
Thank you
This song brought back a world of memories for me
Bob Hatfield, what a voice and what a feeling.... he's just awesome and amazing.
Still I believe is the best live performance ever recorded on TV, just perfect. Bobby was Gods voice
This dude sings so effortlessly. And with no auto-tune.
Without technologies. Real divine talent.!!!
This was the most listened to and danced to song of its time. This song was sung at nearly every wedding back in the sixties and early 70’s. The U.S. birthrate numbers doubled when this song hit the airwaves.
You've Lost that Loving Feeling, The Righteous Brothers, you won"t regret it.
Agree 100%
One of the greatest performances of all time.......
A man with his voice and a microphone. Nothing else. TALENT.
One Man with his Microphone, No Autotune, No Backup dancers, No Pyrotechnics, just Talent! Glad you’re going back to the Roots of Rock’n’ Roll…..SanJoséBob
Don't forget the element of "ROMANCE" built into the lyrics & expressed via the passion in the way he sings!!!
Music should stir your emotions.
drives me mad spoils the moment
Exactly. Back in the day when we first heard these songs none of us even THOUGHT about interpreting the lyrics or trying to extract a message. They were LOVE songs. It was all about the SOUND and how it felt.
The entire duo " Soul and Inspiration " and " You've Lost That Lovin Feeling " complete the Righteous Brothers trifecta .
Bobby really does sing PURE! Loved him in the 60s!
Bobby was 25 yrs old on this recording. His Mother & Father were in the audience and he was nervous to do well for them. I'd say he nailed it! 😁
That running style that he used was amazing… I think it’s a bit of crooning. It was delicate and beautiful.
You are correct... Back in the day, artists were artists, and they will always be remembered for their conviction to their craft
1965 I was only 10 years old thank you for preserving and keep it un touch to destruction the album of collection.the song remains forever classical.
Right. And that prison movie was called "Unchained". Hence, the title of the song.
He is one of a kind he owns this song nobody can sing it like him listen to ebb tide you will like it you have a lovely smile smile on girl🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥✌🐾
This took place on the Andy Williams show
I saw Bobby Hatfield around 1974 at the old Academy of Music on 14th St.
Thank You for sharing. WOW! Lucky You.
Just love when youngins finally hear our music
he sings it so beautiful lovwed that song for years
WOW! Just your eyes alone are FIRE Schnell, I think what Bobby does here is one of the all time greatest performances.
Got the opportunity to see them live back around 1980 and to this day is still one of my favorite concerts ever.
This song made SO MANY babies!!!
Greatest performance in history .
What Bobby is doing is bringing in lots of harmonics to the basic melody line. It shows how really talented he is in capturing every bit of each phrase. And, it's perfect!
Beautiful reaction. Love your t-shirt.A+
Bobby was tremendous.
Yes that man can sing
Done live on the Andy Williams TV show....with Bobby's mom & dad in the audience. Live 1 take.....no magic electronic "vocalizer" fixing you off key notes. On the longer version Andy and Bill Medley (the other Righteous Brother) walk out still clapping. Andy turns to Bobby....sticks out his hand to shake Bobby's hand. The look of respect on Andy's face is unbelievable. Andy Williams was a GREAT singer and we could tell he was blown away by Bobby's performance.
His mum was in the audience and it was the first time she had seen him perform professionally and he nailed it, one of the best live recordings ever
This song....and the shirt....BABY I'M AMAZED....
Live performance in front of a live audience on live TV on the Andy Williams Show. This was done with a live studio orchestra, also. Absolutely terrific.
What just saw right there was straight talent which is extremely rare
OMG you're gorgeous 😍🌹
It does not get better than this. Pure voice.
By the way I forgot, you're not the first woman to be taken by his looks or singing. Love your reaction. 👍😊
You should know that he was suffering from a head cold when he did this song! That accounts for some of his head voice, no doubt!
One of our favorite slow dance songs in 1965 at the sessions.
Hi Schnell!!!
Jeez, I didn't realize that you hadn't reacted to so much "classic" music :-)
Anyway, I assume you are mostly interested in reacting to vocalist centric tunes and preferably Live.
So, here are a few:
--- "Let's Stay Together" -- an early version of Al Green live on his channel
--- "White Rabbit" -- Jefferson Airplane on 'The Smothers Brothers Show' 1967
--- "A Man Needs a Maid" -- Neil Young on the BBC 1971
--- "Rhiannon" -- Fleetwood Mac on 'The Midnight Special' 1976
