"A Whiter Shade of Pale" has sold in excess of 10,000,000 copies which is a remarkable feat, especially for a song released as a single. Only about 40 songs in history have ever achieved this great feat.
In 2004 the song also made it onto the top 60 of Rolling Stone’s notable ranking of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 1998, it was inducted into the highly-distinguished Grammy Hall of Fame. And in 1977 the Brit Awards gave it the distinction of being The Best British Pop Single 1952-1977, an accolade it shared with “Bohemian Rhapsody” (1975) by Queen.
Also in 2018 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame changed its criteria, allowing singles to be inducted into the institution as opposed to only musicians themselves. And “A Whiter Shade of Pale” was amongst the first songs to be enshrined therein.
The success of this song has led to “a whiter shade of pale” being adopted as a common phrase in the English lexicon.

So glad you enjoyed Procol Harum so much. As a singer, I'm sure you'll appreciate that the late and amazing Gary Brooker sounded exactly like that when the song was released in 1967 when he was about 21. GAWD! WHAT a voice. I was 15 when the song was new. I am now an old man who recently retired from a lifetime of playing music for a living. I was gifted with a 3 1/2 octave range (But probably down to three now that I no longer sing regularly). I would cheerfully have murdered my entire circle of friends (Kidding.?). if I could only have sung like Mr. Brooker. Some singers get power. Some get range. Some get tone. Gary Brooker had everything any singer would ever need and more. Thank you for featuring Procol Harum and for listening with "open ears". It'll be a long time before another Brooker comes along.
    Kindest regards.

Notice how Gary Brooker is one of the few lead vocalists who holds a note on a word like "was." Usually, a singer wants to hold notes on vowels. Not Gary. But he just knows how to manipulate the word to work musically. A masterful singer who has been doing this since 1965.
Procol Harum is a legendary band -- was the first to perform live with a full orchestra -- the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Canada ("Conquistador" the opening song was stunning). An incredible night of rock music married perfectly to concert musicians.
    Great assessment Schnell.

Reacting to Procol Harem??? I needed a double take when I saw that. I can't tell you how surprised and impressed I am that you did this! I personally think this version is even better than their original. His voice just seems stronger and more seasoned by the years. And he still belts out the high stuff! That you appreciated this so much makes me happy. Thank you for a great reaction! Pentatonix to Procol Harem??? You earned my subscription!

This beautiful song is about a tragic love story. The lyrics are about a man and woman on a ship, in some kind of stage act, they were dancing.... "We skipped the light fandango🕺💃....turned cartwheels across the floor...I was feelin' kinda of sea sick🤢, but the crowd called out for more"... We ordered another drink "but the waiter brought a tray"....."One of 16 Vestal Virgins" (Vestal Virgins or Vestals were priestesses of Vesta, ie: a virgin goddess👸or a beautiful young woman). "I wandered through my playing cards, and would not let her be". He was in love 💗and persistent and most likely was intimate with one of the 16 beautiful young women on the ship. The young women were most likely in a group traveling together) to the coast.... "16 Vestal Virgins that were leaving for the coast"....." And although my eyes were open they might just as well been closed".....meaning it was plain to see that they could never be together but he was blinded by love, passion, and desire...Later on in life, she finds out that he had died (most likely of a broken heart) and never loved another...."And so it was that later as the miller told his tale, that her face, at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale".....She finds out her lover had died of a broken heart💔. So now you know why the music is so sad, and melodic, and melancholy, and just beautiful!!!!!.

It amazes me how many people say they're unaware of certain artists because they weren't born when they were going. When I was a young Beatles fan in the 60s, I knew about many artists who were popular before I was born. I always heard people talking about them or I read about them in magazines or saw them on TV shows or movies; there was no way I could avoid being exposed to them. For some strange reason that doesn't seem to happen with current generations. They seem unaware of anything that happened before yesterday.

This was the #1 smash song of 1967 - a global hit. And 55 years later it is apparently the most requested and played song ever. It was a co-write by singer Gary Brooker and band lyricist Keith Reid, who wrote very peculiar lyrics. The band name was that of Brooker's cat.
Yes, Brooker was a great singer with a very distinctive voice. He was a real rock 'n' roller and r 'n' b musician, but with Procol Harum he took a more classical turn, though the riffing rock element was always there as you can hear in the tune I link below, 'Simple Sister'.
Thought Procol's drummer BJ Wilson and guitarist Robin Trower joined the band after 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' became a hit, they too were integral to the success of the band. If you know Joe Cocker's 'A Little Help From My Friends', that is Wilson on drums with Jimmy Page on guitar. After that session Page asked the drummer to join what became Led Zeppelin. Fortunately he declined. He was also on the 'Rocky Horror Show' soundtrack and later with Cocker.
Guitarist Trower went on to his own successful career. Listen to 'Bridge of Sighs', with bassist James Dewar on vocals. Another fine though relatively unknown singer with a personality-filled voice.
In addition to his solo career Brooker was also part of Eric Clapton's band and recorded with Kate Bush.
