@@soweli_Lukonsi WW is definitely the most iconic version, given that it appears in three other games. It’s hard to disagree that it’s the best, very bright and colorful, satisfyingly goopy, and the noises they make and the origin behind them are hilarious. With SS and BotW I actually like what they did with them, nothing crazy but effective as a good slime enemy design. As much as I love and defend TP, it’s Chu-Chu designs really are kinda nothing. Meanwhile, MM’s Chu-Chu is… certainly something
@@Gatorah those aren’t really all that frequent of enemies. They definitely were very much present in the N64 games, no one can deny that’s where they shined especially since MM developed them into their own race of people which was really cool. Beyond a few 2D titles, they’ve been missing in action for a while. The Koroks kinda replaced them as a race and the Forest Octorocs kinda replaced them as an enemy. Very much a shame.
I feel like The Deku Baba easily goes to Skyward Sword, not just because the appearance is so good, but because of the gameplay elements that are communicated through the design. In SS, Deku Babas have a hard rock shell, protecting from attacks in the wrong direction, with the direction of the mouth indicating which way you need to slice to successfully kill them. I also love how in SS, there are so many alternative ways of beating them, like: -Parrying them stuns them and allows you to cut off the stalk, instantly killing them. -Shooting them with a slingshot stuns them too. -The Beetle item can fly under it and cut the stalk. -The Bow and Arrow can cut the stalk. -They love eating bombs.
While I love how Deku Baba's function in Skyward Sword, I actually prefer their Twilight Princess appearance. The Baba's In SS look really weird having an animal-like fleshy mouth with actual teeth. I like it when they stick to plant features that mimic animal features like in the earlier designs.
I’m not really seeing how the TP Gibdos are considered insectoid. TOTK I can understand, but TP has no features on them that makes them give off that kind of appearance. Also, the Helmasaur-like enemies in Majora’s Mask are actually called Hiploops. They’re actually quite rare enemies in the game, and only appear on the wooden bridges outside of Woodfall Temple, and a few inside of Stone Tower Temple. As far as I know, the one right outside the boss door in Stone Tower Temple is the only one wearing a metal mask. The rest are unmasked.
To be fair, Hiploop IS the Japanese name for Helmasaur, so in Majora's Mask they are intended to be the same enemy, just that they didn't translate the name for one reason or another.
I’ve never seen this level of appreciation for these little guys! I had no idea about a lot of the designs you shown light on here. I am a little sad that Cadence of Hyrule didn’t get any love, though I do understand that it’s a spinoff

Great video, though admittedly I wish you took the Cadence of Hyrule designs into account since that game has some really good ones, including my personal favorite version of the Wizzrobes where they take the "cartoon wizard" look mentioned at 14:09 , but also turn them into birds as an homage to the ones from Wind Waker, but instead of toucans, the ones in CoH look like crows/ravens, either of which is way more fitting as a dark wizard since both birds are known for being highly intelligent AND overly antagonistic. I am pretty sure some of those 'crows' are the enemy Crowly, and others are Guays.. Guays have had neat design changes for sure. like the beak reaching back behind the eye.. Part of the issue with the inconsistency of the various wormy-centipedey enemies is that the localization just seems to toss the names around at random. But honestly, even in the original Japanese, it's still inconsistent. Whether it's mold, tail, or lanemola.. you have to pretty much roll the dice to see if you're getting a worm, a centipede, a caterpillar... Some of those pig-moriblins are actually called Butablin, but some of them realy are Moriblins so yeah they definitely vary. Dog, pig, and oni features all around. 14:13 that enemy is actually called Kamabado. The localizers got lazy, as they did a lot in this era. 15:40 lol N64 wasn't the origin of Dodongos my good man, they were in the very first game, and the fourth gave us a bizarre worm form. and some newer ones too you seem to have missed. I wonder if the localization is different in your country, because in the US, the enemy Hiploop is called Helmasaur only in some of those games. When it's a bug, they left the name alone. But they are all Hiploop originally. And the "Helmasaur King" also shares his real name with an unrelated enemy the "Helmaroc King", they are both jiikurokku. kinda hard to parse.
6:27 no, its boring and mummies arent original, twilight princess and TotK's variants look scary and dangerous, anw are original creatures. Their sounds in TotK aswell, those screams are bonechilling.
6:58 Sheikah Monks. Granted yes, BotW came out way later, but given they tied their designs to them, and where they appear, it is likely still the case they are Sheikah Monks defending what is supposed to be holy structures or locations for the Royal Family, but warped by Ganondorf’s magic.
The Deku Baba in Wind Waker are the most unique and I feel like you glossed over them. I really like the banana tongue that they have. Edit: I guess it's technically a Boko Baba, but It's basically the same creature.
I think Cadence of Hyrule should be taken into account here, as while it is a crossover game, they take some of the best versions of enemies and tweak them slightly
the like like glowing thing is actually his tongue if you check the encyclopedia in totk it tell his tongue is his weakness and the weakness your hitting is the glowing red ball thingy
TotK Like-Likes really show just how threatening plants or plant-like fauna could be. Kind of in the same vain as the peahats from OoT. Absolutely brilliant monster design imo.
When talking about what a good or a bad design is, there Always will be some personal preferences, but there also some objectiv way to analyse it wich I think is more interesting. Trying to take on the reasons of why did the designer make these choices. The lizalfos design is great in botw, but why ? Probably because the camelion base make them look more unique but also because they were studied to be cohérent this way. By attacking with their long tong, running like a lizard, Horn showing their grade, all this is though by the designers.
I know there's a lot of criticism in the comments but just know that's solely due to it being an opinion piece. The video is very well made and entertaining.
14:42 the enemy in link between worlds is called a anti-fairy not a bubble. I know that they are pretty much the same. In 2d top-down zeldas they are called anti-fairies while in 3d zeldas starting with OoT they are bubbles. Another group of enemies that are very similar but have different names are chuchus, buzz blobs, gels, and zols
I know people hate on the enemies in TOTK, but I don’t think it’s necessarily just the quantity of them, there’s a actually a decent amount. The issue is there is no longer anymore unique enemies so to speak. What was beautiful about the pre BOTW games was that every dungeon and area had genuine new enemies rather than just reskinned elemental enemies. I believe the only one in TOTK that felt unique was like the Gibdo
My personal disagreements and my reasoning Redeads: TP Redead Knight (the "gibdo"), moreso because it doesn't have the grab attack that makes the other versions more annoying to fight, though the WW version that moves much more like a literal living corpse is a close second Lizalfos: SS version, I like the kind of salamander-esque design, and the thick and heavy arm guard makes it quite unique among the scalybois Deku Baba: TP version, I dig the Venus Flytrap styled "teeth" this one has, as opposed to the other versions having real teeth which while it works, is really just teeth and not anything unique
I would’ve included the Zant’s Hand from Twilight Princess since I consider that to be a Wallmaster even though the name very clearly says it’s something else.
The sprites were scaled weirdly in this, making their comparisons difficult to look at. When you're editing, make sure to change the scaling option for sprites from something other than bilinear, since it interprets the change in size by blurring the colors instead of keeping it crisp and blocky.
i feel that the modern gleeok has completely butchered the cool factor of the gleeok, a cool multi head dragon into the goofy almost comedic appearance, if it wasn't for the absolute nightmate these are to fight I'm not sure they'd be as appreciated, still totk's iteration still isn't the worst
I’ve always loved the darknut appearance in wind waker far better than twilight. The main reasons is that they are a different species in wind waker. Almost rodent like maybe squirrel because of the “nut” part of the name. But their armor looks very cool in WW
10:24 hang on,they have carapace faces?I’ve only played the HD version and never noticed Guess I’m too busy raging about how short the goddess short is
I've recently been playing the original Hyrule Warriors, and I just realised that the King dodongo is completely different. Most enemies are obviously very similar to various games but I wonder if there's any new designs that they introduced that I didn't notice.
You should have at least put the oldest version of any enemy on screen every time. Like seriously no original Legend of Zelda sprites deserve even mention when talking about how enemies looks have changed? That's wild
For like likes I’ve got to pick the N64 version. Tears’s design is a plausible ish creature while in the flowing indistinct texture makes it feel like a horror movie version of Muk. It’s just so disgusting in those games.
On Poes: I personally prefer the N64 design over Twilight Princess, even though I grew up on Twilight and have never player Ocarina or Majora, because of the irony of a design. It's a cute yet mysterious Ghost, making it unsettling purely in the fact that it still tries to put on a nice facade, yet it's completely black face and odd robe will always remind you - It's a dead person's ghost

Says "EVERY" in the title; has never played a game prior to Ocarina of Time.
I know right? Waste of time
a link to the past has some great sprites sure but for the most part the earliest games don’t have the best designs for enemies….
@@chrisslaughter8448 if it weren't for those early designs we'd have none at all
but that doesn't mean they have to be his favourites?@@ncapone87
@@randomguy9305 never said they did
I thought the video would for sure end in variations of Ganon! It was fun to go through all these enemies though.
How did I not think of this lol
6:27 no, its boring and mummies arent original, twilight princess and TotK's variants look scary and dangerous, anw are original creatures. Their sounds in TotK aswell, those screams are bonechilling.
are you trying to argue against an opinion, based more on one's personal preference than being a fact or lie?
Mummies are absolutely Iconic. Looking at them beside the ToTK ones, it's way more obvious why they would be weak against fire.
I’ve played oot and mm dozens of times and not once have I ever noticed that the beamos had a mouth and nose 😱
Wind Waker moblins also manage to blend the old bull dog design with the newer pig design that looks like both and still works great.
Love the Koloktos theme in the background! Best boss battle music in the Zelda series period! Also nice video :)
Thanks!
after watching this, i wish they added more of the old enemies to totk. imagine a darknut in botw and totk's style, that would be so cool!
The heck, that eyegore DOES look like a gummy bear. 😂
It is because of the round ears and chubby proportions
@@dinoman6481 Why on earth did they give that eyegore lil round bear ears? Not that I hate it but I’m just perplexed. 😭
Gttta love that a TON of pld enemies were given a chance to return in all of their hd chibi glory in eow
Actually wolfos are going to make their grand return in Echoes of Wisdom soon.
i think i'll always prefer the realistic artstyle of TP enemies over the other games
“Ayy, wait a minute, you don’t ave a weapon”
Loving this channel 🙏
Totally forgot the 2D Era NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advanced Designs.
It's interesting to see how TP's realistic style aged questionably
You forgot Ganon himself...
Honestly I always liked the OoT and MM LikeLikes more. They always felt really intimidating, and the way they died by melting is really cool
The peahat from TP always makes me feel like I got dirt all over me 😂
10:44 OK but my man forgot to talk about all the fun monsters from Nintendo worlds Zelda game
14:37 thats... smoke...
Great video man! Worth a sub!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
I love the idea they had for the Twilight Princess wallmasters personally, so I was a little sad they didn't get a mention in this video :
Genuinely good Zelda content. Thank you
Thank you!
13:58 i wonder why nintendo decided to turn poes from terrifying ghosts to tiny blue lights
4:33 i think i saw that thing in shadow the hedgehog as one of black dooms units
My personal disagreements and my reasoning
Redeads: TP Redead Knight (the "gibdo"), moreso because it doesn't have the grab attack that makes the other versions more annoying to fight, though the WW version that moves much more like a literal living corpse is a close second
Lizalfos: SS version, I like the kind of salamander-esque design, and the thick and heavy arm guard makes it quite unique among the scalybois
Deku Baba: TP version, I dig the Venus Flytrap styled "teeth" this one has, as opposed to the other versions having real teeth which while it works, is really just teeth and not anything unique
The best design of the helmasaur is the gameboy sprite they look hillarious without their mask!
I would’ve included the Zant’s Hand from Twilight Princess since I consider that to be a Wallmaster even though the name very clearly says it’s something else.
Oh my gosh, all this time I thought the OoT Armos was some weird bull dragon thing with a crooked mouth. I did not know it had a sword and shield, lol
Man, this is making me want to go play all the Zelda games again.
You missed the like like from TP, those have a cool design
How the hell are the redead knights (yes i know they are gibdos bit that is their offical name) insectoids?
6:54 that thing came out of the backrooms right there, MY GOD!!!
You sould do this with classic bosses that have had multiple iterations as well! Like Gohma and Phantom ganon!
Oooh great idea, I'm definitely doing that in the future!
I’ve always loved the darknut appearance in wind waker far better than twilight. The main reasons is that they are a different species in wind waker. Almost rodent like maybe squirrel because of the “nut” part of the name. But their armor looks very cool in WW
10:24 hang on,they have carapace faces?I’ve only played the HD version and never noticed
Guess I’m too busy raging about how short the goddess short is
Guess which hinox design is my favorite (btw if you haven’t guessed, hinoxes are my favorite enemy)
I think the skyward sword moblins are goofy and that’s why they’re my favorite moblin iteration
12:06 breath of the wild? We had lasers and guardians, no Beamos tho.
14:50 shouldn’t you have included botw flying heads with the malice around it
I get that this video is focusing more on 3D models than Sprites but it's still weird that you didn't even mention Cadence of Hyrule
I've recently been playing the original Hyrule Warriors, and I just realised that the King dodongo is completely different.
Most enemies are obviously very similar to various games but I wonder if there's any new designs that they introduced that I didn't notice.
Not choosing Hyrule Warriors Wizzrobe has to be a crime of some sort.
You should have at least put the oldest version of any enemy on screen every time. Like seriously no original Legend of Zelda sprites deserve even mention when talking about how enemies looks have changed? That's wild
He never played the original Zelda game
