It’s so emotional to now look back on this and the IU intro with the grandmotherly janitor singing their fight song.
I’m now 52 and was born and raised in Madison, Indiana. I have so many great memories of growing up following at IU, Purdue, Louisville and Kentucky basketball. Many people in Madison followed the other three, but I also followed Purdue because my mom and both of her brothers went there.
I especially loved watching with my maternal grandparents because they got so animated and always believed that the officials were corrupt against Purdue.
I so much miss those days when college basketball ruled; when we stopped whatever we did to watch our favorite teams, the games were the biggest topic of conversation at work and school the next day, and the NCAA tournament was to us what the Super Bowl was to much of the country.
It was such a special time.

I watched hundreds of Purdue games, mostly on WTTV channel 4, from 1978 until well into the 90s.
I especially enjoyed watching with my maternal grandparents because they got so animated and always believed that the officials were crooked against Purdue!
The one night when it crossed the line from entertainment to scariness was the round it 16 game in 1988 against Kansas State. Purdue was a serious national championship contender that year and when the game was slipping away in the final minutes, my grandmother, who had already had one heart attack, looked like she was going to have another. Fortunately, she didn’t.
My Uncle Bob was at that game, at the late Silverdome, and he blamed the loss on the officiating, saying that they let KSU get away with a lot of illegal contact. And I don’t ever remember him ever blaming another Purdue loss on officiating.
But that loss became much less painful to me a few years later when KSU’s Mitch Richmond became a big star in the NBA.

I have always wondered who the Gentleman was that played the Tuba and I wish that they included the scene before that when the young boys were outside playing basketball!

True, but this version of Hail Purdue is literally called "Tuba Hail" We dusted it off in the early 90s once when I was in AAMB (Trumpet). A Sousaphone is literally a specialized tuba meant to be played standing. Hail Purdue! What you heard hear I believe is merely the intro.
