The first and only time I was asked to play it I was a senior in high school. I wrote it out that afternoon on paper that I taped to a piece of cardboard, stuck it in the lyre, good to go, practiced it a number of times no problem. Got to the football field, and instead of having me play it from the stands where the pep band was, they made me play from inside the booth - where there were no lights. It was a closet in there. I always had to fight the nerves, and this did not help. Plus, I couldn't see a thing, so I had to go off memory. Got about halfway through, had to pull the chute. I was so ashamed about killing the national anthem I walked home from the game - three miles. I was a solid player, but my high school band never marched, I had never had to memorize anything. Had I known, I would have been able to manage it, just some arpeggios more or less, but with no warning.....nope. I've had three great trumpet disasters over the years, that was the first. Had I been a few years older, and not just a dopey high school kid, I would have been able to say "nope", and would have played it outside, without their unnecessary microphone, and it would have been fine....as it was....sometimes we must learn. But I am still embarrassed by it 40 years later.

That is impressive for a 7 year old with one year of experience. I remember some players in high school that she played better than. If she keeps at it with at least an hour a day every day, she has a really good shot at making lead in all state jazz in high school. Having twice the experience as most of the competition is already a huge advantage as most players start in 5th or 6th grade. Range can be an issue for making that position but she hit a high G really well so with range exercises she will be able to hit a double G by her senior year in high school. This is coming from someone that has played lead with trumpet players that made all state jazz a year or two after I graduated. She could play at our level in high school by the time she's in 6th grade if she is taking jazz lessons and practicing hard.

I have been teaching music for many many years and believe me the trumpet is a 'mother' you know what! The trumpet can be described in one word 'unforgiving'! The fact that a seven year old has the guts to get up there in front of people and play without making any mistakes in itself tremendous. 7 years old is quite young to play the trumpet i usually recommend to start at 10 and they can really progress faster at that age. I think considering her age her performance and courage this little girl shows a lot of promise. If she puts in the practice time the trumpet in particular demands she will go far. Remember, when it comes to practicing any instrument,' what you put in is what you get back'. no short cuts. Good luck young lady!

Even if she does try it's going to be really hard for her because she's little and her lungs are smaller so she can't hold notes that long. There's just some things that she can and can't do and I'm pretty sure holding long notes is something that's going to be a struggle for her at least for now since she's as young. I would know, I started playing the Trumpet and flute when I was 8. It's not easy and now that I'm in highschool marching band I can tell the huge difference of being able to play long notes.

No you *probably* wouldn't bc she/he is 15 no matter what age they still have to learn the same skill set in the same amount of time. Seeing some comments from people who obviously don't play trumpet or brass instruments, and some comments lead me to believe some commenters don't play any instrument at all.
For a second grader, playing trumpet for a single year, to have those chops, that level of air control, that strength of muscle in her diaphragm, musicality, intonation, articulation, that lip bend at the end, the pleasing and not over extended ritardando, the entire piece was played by memory, she's listening to the audience singing along and both following their pushed tempo yet also pulling it back from allowing the crowd to speed up too much (which crowds love to do from singing to clapping), plus she's OUTSIDE and I think we all know how playing a brass instrument is like in the elements if you have experience... this little miss thing is beyond impressive for her age on a brass instrument.
People love to judge but I'm thoroughly bowing to this. She'd be my vote for first trumpet in the ensemble. 🎺⭐✌

I was first chair once. It's so awkward though! People rely on you if they make a mistake. My lips literally go numb because I used to be the only trumpet player in jazz band and everyone else was playing very loud lol

Yea I'm in beginner band and next fall in inermidiet but the band director practiced with me once and he said I sounded exactly like him and I'm the only trumpet that tries doing the dynamics and the full notes,my friend that sits beside me always ask me if he played good but there is this girl in the trumpets that I dispise because she thinks she is the best trumpet there and one of my other friends tried something and asked here who the best trumpet was and of course she said here self and every one else was terrible and a few days later we had a contest and I beat her.also a few weeks ago she got braces and I was really happy about that because she also plays way to loud on the music like if it's mf of piano when she plays it it sounds like her only volume is ff

Yea I'm in 8th grade and the other trumpets rely on me to play when their supposed to and count rests, the other day I missed school because I was sick and when I got back I was told that the band teacher said "just because he (me) isn't here, doesn't mean you can't play good"

Bro it was like in my 8th grade band. All the trumpets except like 3 people relied on me. Now were in high school and most of them don't do that now but a few still do
Edit: I just realized I already commented on this lol

Holy wow. Amazing. I played trumpet all through junior high and high school and got pretty good. But at her age that’s crazy impressive!

She’s definitely skilled, and has a lot of courage to play alone in front of a crowd, but she has to work on her breathing. Very good though! 🌸

I hate how people say “she’s good for her age” when age has literally nothing with how well you should be able to play your instrument it’s how much you practice that makes you good
