Hey Bud, you must have a bad copy or something. The last versions had a lot more plastic in them, but were lighter and more compact. I have found the 50 f/2 to be the most consistent lens of the Minolta line up. Used on a Sony A74, my copies show quite decent sharpness wide open and smooth fall off to the corners. At f/5.6 is it very sharp. Also the colours are natural and classic. A steal of a lens.

Great video! I've bought the 1.7 version this week. I've heard they're pretty similar

Thanks. :) I was considering hunting down the 1.7 myself, but then this one popped up.

The f/2 is a better lens. The 1.4 is a waste of money unless you get a great deal. The 1.2 even more so.

The Minolta MD 3 or New MD lenses are really nice for low cost lightweight vintage sets. I have the 24mm f2.8, 28mm f2.8, 35mm f2.8, 50mm f1.7 and the 135mm f3.5.
There is 1 glaring problem with the New
MD’s, the lens elements are grouped together, and can’t be separated for cleaning or repairing. So if you find fungus, there is very little you can do.

Yeah, I think they feel really solid for how light they are. I’ll probably get more if some pop up… and I’ll be sure to keep them dry.

Nice video! I won't be looking for this one though, since I've allready got the 50mm 1.7, the 45mm f2 and the 58mm 1.4. They're quite good in different ways.

Yeah, sounds like you’re already set up. I was looking into the f/1.7 - how is it?

@@gearheadchannel The 1.7 is just a nice allround nifty fifty. The 45 is a pancake but sharp. The 58 is softer, but for creative use.

Thanks. I’m on the lookout for a solid performing manual 50mm to use as an anamorphic taking lens, and that was one that looked like a contender.

@@gearheadchannel Mark Holtze did a review on it, he knows a thing or two about glass ruclips.net/video/h7bNxjSkhbg/видео.html
