    Thanks for the review! Yes, the MD 50mm f/2 is a really nice lens. Only problem(s) for me are that it has a rather long minimum focus distance and only a six-bladed aperture. But for us $35, I can't really complain. I think that it handles chromatic aberration better than my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM (the third version of the Canon Nifty Fifty) at similar apertures. But the Canon lens hadnles flare a bit better.

      @danienelphoto  2 месяца назад

      Yes, indeed. The longer focusing distance is a bit 'meh', especially compared to a Pentacon 50mm 1.8. The nifty fifties from Canon seem to suffer from inconsistent manufacturing. I have used ones that are lovely, and then the same lens, just another copy not good. Because I often use cheap vintage lenses, and they mostly have six blade apertures, I have started taking to it as a "feature" :)

    I have a copy of this lens in excellent condition (it was about $35 a few years ago from ebay), I haven't actually tested it yet although it seems to get a lot of good reviews! I'll do some comparisons with the MD 50 1.7, 1.4, and 45 2.0 some day.
    Thanks.

      Somebody sugested the 45mm 2.0 to me as well. Definitely a neat little lens. Thank you for checking out the video!

    This is a great lens. I would never have tried it if it had not come bundled with a 58 f1.4 that I wanted. I think the image quality from the 50 f2 is better than that of the much-touted 58.

      I haven't used the 58, but as you could tell, I also really like the lens! Thanks for checking out the video.

    Excellent video review, Daniel. Watched and liked. 👍
    According to various reviews on-line, the MD-III 50/2 is indeed a superb lens and performs much better optically than the MC-X~MD-III 50/1.7 counterparts.
    You're absolutely right in stating that it's a non-sensical rubbish urban legend that there was collaboration with Leica involved in the making of Minolta MC/MD lenses. The fact is that Leica rebranded some Mnolta lenses as Leica products, e.g.
    Elmarit-R Fishe-Eye 16mm f/2.8 1974~2001
    Elmarit-R 24mm f/2.8 (only some lens elements and schema) 1974~2006
    Vario-Elmar-R 80-200mm f/4.5 1974~78
    Vario-Elmar-R 75-200mm f/4.5 1978~84
    Vario-Elmar-R 35-70mm f/3.5 (non-Macro) 1982~85
    Vario-Elmar-R 35-70mm f/3.5 Macro 1986~97
    Vario-Elmar-R 70-210mm f/4 1984~2000
    MR-Telyt-R 500mm f/8 1980~1996
    As an interesting sidenote, the stress/accent on the word (Mount) Rokkō/Rokkor is on the "ko/kor' instead of "rok", like how the Japanese people do it. A Japanese Minolta engineer would pronounce the words "Rokkō" as "Lok-Kō", and "Rokkor" as "Lok-Kō-Lu" as the Japanese people can't curl their toungues to pronounce the consonant "r". As for the meaning for the word "Rokkō", it's 六甲,meaning the six (六)universal elements (甲), derived from ancient Chinese when the Japanese officials imported/adopted many of the Chinese characters into the Japanese language during 300~700 AD (the Chinese Sui, Tang and Song dynastic eras).

      Thank you for a superb reply and I love the explanation in the Rokkor pronunciation, history and meaning. Thank you for the info on the Leica /Minolta story too. I hope to see you in the comments again soon!

    Just pulled out all my old film SLRs and started to investigate adapters for my Canon Cameras. I do have a 50mm Minolta (3rd generation) also a Nikkor 50mm and a Pentax 50mm. Excited to get the Minolta up and running. Bonus I also have a Vivitar 135mm f2 with a Minolta mount, just walking around with it mounted to my old Minolta SRT 101 what I'm seeing through the view finder is very cool, has a cinematic/dreamy look, can't wait to test it on a modern SLR. Great video ! Thank You !

      Ah - you'll find the Pentax 50mm similar in handling to the Minolta, but also excellent fun. Thanks for checking out the video. These old lenses are really good value, especially if they are just languishing in a drawer somewhere!

    Great channel. I have not tried this lens yet, while I bought one and am getting ready to do so. I did use however two lenses that I do like - Konica Hexanon 40mm f1.8 and Mamiya/Sekor SX 50mm f2. Both those lenses delivered magic on my Fuji X-trans cameras.

    • @danienelphoto
      @danienelphoto  Год назад +1

      The Mamiya/Sekors are also dirt cheap in these areas. I was a Mamiya shooter in my film days of my business, so a bit biased too! Love the medium format lenses from Mamiya.

      You are spot on regarding the Konica Hexanon 40mm, it is an absolute beauty. Small, sharp and to my mind the perfect focal length on film. I've also used it on my Fuji X-E1, and was delighted with the results, although it's a short telephoto when adapted.

    Yes, this is an excellent, lightweight, easygoing, still cheap lens. Perfect as walk around one in the city and for landscapes. I tested it with a chart. It becomes sharp corner to corner at f8, but even wider open this lens is sharp even in the outer part of the frame. Even at f2 very good, and that’s rare, when it comes to vintage lenses. Those extreme edges and then the corners become completely sharp at f8. The bokeh is a bit busy, when the background is busy and not far enough. Not an ideal portrait lens, but occasionally, why not. Thanks for the great video.

      Thank you for your thorough reply. Yes, I am really impressed how essentially a nifty fifty is technically so good still, 40 years on. 50mm is not my fav for portraits anywsys, so with you on that!
