    i can confirm that this zoom lens is very sharp. I just made some testshots on my eos r. Will have to use it with a film camera soon. Thankx for the video !

    Wow, this particular lens sprung to mind the other day, and then boom - here you are making a video about it. Fantastic! Great stuff mate. It's inspiring seeing you keep at it with regular uploads and solid content. It's been a while for me personally, but I have big plans for my YT channel so will try to catch up, haha. Anyhoo, cheers and well done! :)

      Thanks so much. Yes, I can't wait to see some of your stuff regularly in 2024. Your production value and quality is way up there. But man... frequency is tough to maintain! I try and do 1 every fortnight.... it is a slog between normal work shoots!

      @@danienelphoto Oh hey thanks man, that really means a lot! And yes, I will. Working on bulk editing currently, to be able to release regularly. It'll be a few weeks still, but soon. And I totally get what you mean. It's really difficult to find the time. But you're doing great man, which is massively inspirational, so thank you for putting in the work - it makes me want to do the same! :)

    I have one of these with an April 1981 production code. I suspect it might be a production sample or something - it came in its original wrapped box and didn't seemed to be used in any way - but the paint was worn in some strange places and there're a few strange things on the mount that stood out. Maybe it was something handed to magazine reviewers back in the day.
    It's also the second one I've bought.
    The first one was utterly written off. The glass was fine - but every single bearing and bushing in it had turned to mush so it couldn't hold focus or zoom. I've had the same thing with a couple of Canon Zooms from the era too. They're too easily trashed.
    Weight is fine on a heavier body like an F-1 or T90 - it counterbalances well.

      Interesting! Sounds like a technician Frankensteined it :) I haven't worked FD lenses too hard, so don't know how they hold up. I try and buy ones that aren't too badly used.

    Howdy. I'm here after reading your interchange with The 120ist.
    I am also a lover of vintage glass. (Shhhh, don't tell anyone!) I had this lens 30-years ago when I was an AE-1 shooter. It is nearly a perfect focal range for 35mm photography. (I sometimes wished for 28mm, though...) I found it to be acceptably sharp for my work (mostly shooting concerts in small venues, some outdoor photography, and my family of course), especially stopped down a little.
    If I was still shooting Canon film cameras, this would be in my kit.
    My favorite Canon lens of all time was the 50mm f/1.4 SSC in the old FD mount. I still have one on the shelf and that makes me think I need to take it for a walk with the Sony A7Sii.
    Nice review. Well done.

      Thank you for your kind comment. It is so funny, 30 years ago when I was about to go to uni for my photography degree, these were just lenses! Lol, now its vintage. I suppose I am too! I didn't really care too.much about 35mm, as I was shooting Mamiya 645 almost exclusively for my pro work till 2006, so the 35mm stuff was aleays an afterthought, so I missed out on learning about Canon lenses a lot, those days. It was basically just "get a decent zoom for the odd event things I did, and bands too!
      That 50mm 1.4 SSC is legendary, even though I don't have yet.

    I got the canon ae1 with this lens for my birthday and i was wondering if it would be worth it to buy the fd 50mm lens in addition, do you think the 50mm is better or is the one I already have enough? Because 50mm is within the zoom range so I don‘t really know if I actually need it

    • @danienelphoto
      @danienelphoto  8 месяцев назад +1

      Unless you want the wider aperture, to maybe shoot in lower light, or you want the more blurry background at F1.8 of the 50mm, this lens will do fine. Some people just like the feel of the prime lenses a bit more, but from a usability standpoint, the zoom is great for covering a lot of subjects.

    Just picked up the lens at a trift shop, was gonna use it on my Canon dslr, what lens adaptor did you use? Secondly, do yo need an adaptor with glass optics? Great video, very inspiring.

    • @danienelphoto
      @danienelphoto  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi - thanks so much for watching! K&F Concepts makes nice adpaters in my experience - so the EF-FD is what you would need. Unfortunately if you wish to be able to focus to infinity, one with a glass element is necessary, as far as I can tell. There are without glass elements, so maybe it has been redesigned! I think however, you will need the glass optic one, if my current understanding is correct. I ised one with my 5D4 DSLR and to be dead honest, it was not nearly as bad as people said. In fact, bar some very small bit of edge softness, the adapter was fine. The name of the brand of that one escapes mez though!

    Vivitar, Hoya, makinon and probably other brands have ,presumably , tokina made lenses with exactly the same specs! It's like Canon used the same recipe with their ingredients.
    I wonder how any of those lenses compare with this Canon. Footage looks very very similar !

    Is it parfocal?

    • @danienelphoto
      @danienelphoto  3 месяца назад

      Not quite.... but close. There seems to be agreement that it is parfocal from 35-85mm, but loses focus from 85-105.

  • @classic.cameras
    @classic.cameras 2 месяца назад +1

    The WORST thing about this lens is its 5ft min focus distance except in Macro mode. I hate this lens for that reason but otherwise I find it pretty fun and the look is decent. It should be worth more then its present $100 USD on eBay average.

    • @danienelphoto
      @danienelphoto  2 месяца назад +1

      I have to agree that the minimum focus is a tad "meh", even though I didn't make too much of a point of it in the video. You will hear me gush on about the Tokina 28mm because of its close minimum focusing distance (vid on channel). I suspect, possibly incorrectly, but still, that the macro feature on this lens was added to mitigate the frustrations one might have with the long minimum focusing distance. Also, thanks for commenting amd checking out the video!

    I have this lens... It is not parfocal at all.... The canon groups on FB will also state the very same that its not parfocal.. Why its even mentioned is absurd and misleading

    • @danienelphoto
      @danienelphoto  4 месяца назад +2

      Not the intention to mislead..., especially since I am not selling or promoting it.
      There are many online forums where this is suggested and thus I examined it, and you can see as well what my conclusion was. However, to correct your mistaken assumption, this is in fact a discussion that was had on FB groups where I participated in, and true to form to discussions like these, some claimed it was enthusiastically, and some held your view, enthusiastically.
      A quick intermet search would show this is in fact a topic of discussion, with this particular article claiming it is parfocal to 85mm.
      www.cined.com/ancient-optics-canon-fd-35-105mm-f-3-5-multi-format-zoom-introduced/
      Or
      www.flickr.com/groups/canonfd/discuss/72157634551287530/
      Or
      www.photo.net/forums/topic/395842-canon-fd-35-105mm-f35-lens-scales-interpretation/
      And
      www.canonclassics.com/canon-nfd-35-105mm-f3.5/10-110/
      There are scores more, but I think you should catch my drift.
      Absurd is a strong sentiment, and given the amount of discussion on it, probably ill-informed. You seem to also just be giving your opinion (an inalienable right, so please do!), but if indeed mine struck you as such, my apologies for causing you displeasure.
      I (sincerely) hope you were able to watch a video with more edifying results afters :). Thanks for checking out my review anyways and bothering to engage.

    • @danienelphoto
      @danienelphoto  4 месяца назад

      The concensus I seem to be seeing is that it is parfocal to 85mm from 35mm... in my experience it was close, but not all the way - it could be a calibration issue on mine? I am not a camera technician, so cannot say for sure.
