I love that every game of Ghost fort eventually gets to the point where both teams come to an agreement to just ignore Merasmus. I can only imagine it goes something like: "FEAR ME MORTALS, FOR I HAVE COME!" And all the mercs are sitting around playing cards or something.
A community server I run with some friends of mine, Church of Gibus used to do two events called Merasmus and Monoculus Slaying. IIRC we set the world record at Level 51 Merasmus and Level 26 Monoculus. We only had probably like 12-15 people max nor used cheats.
While Hunstman Sniper is perhaps the meta generally, I decided to run Scottish Resistance Demo (I was the blue pirate Demo running around) as a strategy for the hiding phase. My thought is that if I can trap his hiding spots preemptively, then we could quickly skip over the hiding phase, which is what really got us later on. But hey I stuck around for 34 rounds so I am satisfied with my Skulltopper number.
Ah yes, 38. The number of times Merasmus spawns in your average game of Ghost Fort. Hope you weren't planning on completing the whole match. My personal cap was at level 9, and I remember basically that first year there were sprays for telling people to switch to Sniper because Merasmus takes more damage from his primaries.
Thanks for having me, it was fun, shame I had to leave near the end of it to marinate some food but it was cool focusing on a boss like some of those old custom maps that were popular when I used to play regularly.
I know I got a lot of my achievements stuff from that stuff do I regret it now eh kinda but In the long run not really. My only regret is deleting my mercenary badge because I didn’t know the value behind it as a f2p at the beginning
didn’t know the server went back up after the attempt with cheats lol. but hey, happy to have participated in the legitimate run! maybe we can get a larger gathering next time and come with a more refined plan.
a few years ago i managed to have a ghost fort match go so long that we were dealing with a level 16 merasmus. and i do mean this as a natural progression, we werent coordinating it like this video
One time, the owner of a server I was playing on got bored. So he summoned Merasmus lvl 16,000+ and gave us all Valve rocket launchers with infinite Uber. Merasmus died in like 30 seconds, so he summoned more and more, increasing the level each time.
both the huntsman and the crusader's crossbow do maximum damage to Merasmus as in the comic lore, he has an aversion to arrows. its a neat gameplay effecting lore tid bit.
I don't know why but that thumbnail makes me feel comfortable. It's so honest, it's baiting, but not clickbating. It embodies what makes the internet so honest perfectly
2:37, it has nothing to do with skull island topper hat, it happens with any item after it updates. e.g applying color, name and description tags and etc.
Fun fact, the visible level only goes until 32,767, but internally it still keeps track of levels past that. His maximum level is 2,147,483,647 (maximum signed integer value), which will also display on your Skull Island Topper.
Why not Kritz a Scottish Resistance Demoman to take out Merasmus as soon as he spawns? 1 minute is probably enough time to build Uber if your team has a Boston Basher Scout, and with two Demo/Medic pairs doing it, that's at least 16 crit stickies going off at once, plus the remaining 12 stickies. Then have some Wrangler Engineers and some Huntsman snipers for the rest of the fight if he survives.
I'm not sure how much health he scale but since you can stun him with bombinomikons, you just want to drain all his health when stunned, he shouldn't be able to hise when stunned i think
If you map out all of the possible prop locations and assign certain people certain sections of the map, you could maybe mitigate the healing problem. More people would also make this easier.
Ngl, I was hoping for a "most damage"-style analysis of the best class, weapons, and strat for fighting Merasmus and the highest humanly (and theoretically) possible level he could be beaten legitimately. At the very least I thought you'd spawn a level 13,767 Merasmus just to show what the maximum level looks like
While I might not be sure, I think spy's revolver could be the best dmg meta, the way revolver damage scales on bosses is quite insane something around 200 dmg while shooting much faster then huntsman, the only problem probably is ammo, but at least it's hitscan and you can have dead ringer and stuff quite strong
@@bobbyferg9173 I was the sniper with the wizard hat and big head, I was also riding a bumper cart at one point. When everyone left I spawned 60 Horseless hatmen.
I've beaten Merasmus at level 23, as my hat indicates. This was on a Valve server, and I think nearly everyone was spamming Huntsmans at him. I think, once we were getting some levels on him, that the server decided to hard focus him to see how far we could go. This was done in one of the earliest years of him being around. I didn't even remember he could attack that far.
Recall seeing an insanely leveled skull topper at some point whose level was the same as a 32-bit integer limit, (probably caused by a bug) So perhaps it's the same for merasmus himself.
When it comes to Ghost Fort/Merasmus contracts, it is more to accept that the round is going to take a long time. Come to like gaving Merasmus respawn more often. Better chance of getting to stun them more than possibly once per round. Got to get him 12 times after all. When merasmus isn't around, it is back to just chilling and waiting for his next respawn. Highest level that I have been part of defeating Merasmus, is level 11.
I was part of a group that got him to level 39, which was fun, and I'd love to go for a higher number some day. The strategy would be to stop damaging him at a certain point before his next attack so that he wouldn't go into hiding, but someone would inevitably shoot him anyways and that's where we ended up losing. It was also critical to just be absolutely sure you didn't have line-of-sight every time he attacked.
Most peak tf2 thumbnail ever but I love Merasmus, I honestly wish they did more boss Halloween stuff, it's makes me sad because Halloween has potential for that but honestly I'd love even a different map for Merasmus aswell.
This video made me aware that I can check the highest level Merasmus I defeated on the Skull Island Topper, and apparently, it was 19. In a normal, Valve server, contract match of Ghost Fort. I remember it well.
My favorite way to damage him is with Engineer, especially with the Gunslinger: before he gets to low health pop a mini near the cap, then watch him take damage for the entire duration of the Bombinomicon animation
I remember back in 2013 going onto a server that would help with achievements and merasmus was just dying constantly so I hit him as scout and I killed merasmus at level 64. SO that server doesnt exist anymore but my skull island topper shows the level
one of my first rounds of ghost fort was early/mid october when i was playing with my friends (i started playing tf2 in july) and i genuinely dont think ive been that angry at the game itself and not the enemy players for a long time. the guy got to level 6 before we finally decided to leave him alone, and than seconds after leaving he came back. it didnt help that one of my friends likes ghost fort so i had to play the whole round even once all our contracts were finished, i got bored after a while and started hopping around in the spawn room for the last 2 or 3 minutes. lakeside is one of my favorite maps so it makes me mad how bad ghost fort is, especially when mann manor and eyeaduct pulled off the same concept way better
I was today years old when I learned that Merasmus doesn't hide in a particular prop, but rather you just need to destroy a set number of props. Doesn't change much, but good to know.
Saw a level 10 in casual, and on a server I moderate we held an event to take him to level 69. Got there too! We did edit some cvars to make it a lot easier, though.

24 players: 1 Engi on each team, 2 Demo Scottish Resistance on the same team, 1 Amputator Medic per team on the balcony, and 18 Huntsman Snipers We took down a level 32 Merasmus legitimately that way, here was our strat: -Both Engi setup on the balcony, teleporters inside so people who do die come back faster and are relatively safe from the insane magic range, Sentry and Dispenser outside so Snipers can spam during the Bombinomicon attack -Scottish Resistance on the same team to avoid destroying each others sticky, they only have one role, read the map of potential hiding spots and have at least 2 stickies per location (we tried single sticky but it became a 50/50 shot whether we got the prop or not), spots relatively close to the balcony were ignored, Merasmus can and will destroy any sticky trap where he spawns (control point) but not his resting spots, being able to end his hiding phase quickly is almost necessary past level 20 (for safety reason, making sure the balcony keeps the aggro, and to have a good view of the whole map, Demos stay in spawn after laying their stickies) -Amputator Medics are taunt spamming on the balcony (quick-fix Engies while airborne if possible), the reason almost everyone must go there is because you hit your head on the sky limit and take far less fall damage, Medics being healed by dispensers plus passive from Amputator let them tank Merasmus for the most part (expect some death reaching level 25 and above) -Huntsman must absolutely headshot Merasmus, going from 200~300 per shot to a guaranteed 1040 per arrow is non-negligible, this also bypasses any need for Kritzkrieg if it were any other class (Scout is the second best at damage if given Kritz, he has some ridiculous modifiers on his Scatterguns) We could have gotten a better score but we were tired, this was our 4th attempts of the day, and it takes ages to get back to such high levels so we called it there PS: This was done before the Jungle Inferno update, not that many changes were made and I couldn't find anything that would stop this strat from working, but if some things no longer works, this is probably why Backup plan: If a Sniper died during the Bombinomicon phase, he could switch to the Machina, a fully charged Machina shot when Merasmus loses his glow can drop his health significantly, headshots work too but they're harder to hit due to his twisted model (it's like trying to headshot sentry busters, it's possible but it's dumb)
Monoculous sounds more fun, his fight is pretty straightfoward and seeing just how stupid fast he can fire sounds more entertaining than Merasmus hide and seek
Hunt Down Merasmus could be a fun gamemode, maybe find a way to use vscript or plugins to have permanent truce, and if a full 2 teams have enough players with all the prop spots memorized, perhaps you could push it to the limits, employing the vaccinator to survive his hellfire bit longer until his scaling catches up and he cross map 1 taps the full server
Merasmus with his crazy level updates soldier boyfriend is gonna need his kritzication, we meet here merasmus lame exaterration that we travel in time tonight!
Monoculus DOES have a max level of 60! I found it out on a community server that lets you buy and spawn monoculi, and after level 60, it went back down to 1!
His health is probably computed when he is spawned based on the number of players, so you can further cheese him by leaving only 1/2 players on the server until he spawns and then have everyone rejoin. Obv need Discord or something to coordinate this though.

24 players: 1 Engi on each team, 2 Demo Scottish Resistance on the same team, 1 Amputator Medic per team on the balcony, and 18 Huntsman Snipers
We took down a level 32 Merasmus legitimately that way, here was our strat:
-Both Engi setup on the balcony, teleporters inside so people who do die come back faster and are relatively safe from the insane magic range, Sentry and Dispenser outside so Snipers can spam during the Bombinomicon attack
-Scottish Resistance on the same team to avoid destroying each others sticky, they only have one role, read the map of potential hiding spots and have at least 2 stickies per location (we tried single sticky but it became a 50/50 shot whether we got the prop or not), spots relatively close to the balcony were ignored, Merasmus can and will destroy any sticky trap where he spawns (control point) but not his resting spots, being able to end his hiding phase quickly is almost necessary past level 20 (for safety reason, making sure the balcony keeps the aggro, and to have a good view of the whole map, Demos stay in spawn after laying their stickies)
-Amputator Medics are taunt spamming on the balcony (quick-fix Engies while airborne if possible), the reason almost everyone must go there is because you hit your head on the sky limit and take far less fall damage, Medics being healed by dispensers plus passive from Amputator let them tank Merasmus for the most part (expect some death reaching level 25 and above)
-Huntsman must absolutely headshot Merasmus, going from 200~300 per shot to a guaranteed 1040 per arrow is non-negligible, this also bypasses any need for Kritzkrieg if it were any other class (Scout is the second best at damage if given Kritz, he has some ridiculous modifiers on his Scatterguns)
We could have gotten a better score but we were tired, this was our 4th attempts of the day, and it takes ages to get back to such high levels so we called it there
PS: This was done before the Jungle Inferno update, not that many changes were made and I couldn't find anything that would stop this strat from working, but if some things no longer works, this is probably why
Backup plan: If a Sniper died during the Bombinomicon phase, he could switch to the Machina, a fully charged Machina shot when Merasmus loses his glow can drop his health significantly, headshots work too but they're harder to hit due to his twisted model (it's like trying to headshot sentry busters, it's possible but it's dumb)
