  • In this week's portrait painting video we will be exploring realism. In this case we will refer to it as "classical realism" (Please don't confuse this term with anything other than what I'm telling you). This means we will use a "classical" painting approach to create a "realistic" oil painting. Let's remember the goal is here is never to copy a photograph. It is about interpreting visual information to create a painting.

Dear Yupari- I have a couple of books on painting by prominent painters explaining the classical way. However, to be honest your tutorials make it easier to learn by actually following along. THANK YOU.Therefore in my opinion it is way better. The only thing for me that I would like is that when you are painting please explain the planes and changes in the muscle structure and also your use of the landmarks. I know that you have done this before, but as you go through it the drilling practice helps alot. Maybe you will also consider some tutorial portrait paintings that emphasise the changes in the face (muscles) and planes with different facial expressions.

WOW! EUREKA!!! I would email this to you but don’t know how. I HAD A GRAND AWAKENING! I got it! Your teaching methods, your words, specifically “...I see a little angle there...”, turned on the lights in my theater of a mind! I see what you are showing us. I don’t mean I see EVERYTHING you are showing us, but I had my FIRST MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH IN PAINTING for a long time. I really did! I’m totally blown away by what I see. The “sculpture” concept or image somehow clicked, and I saw what I’d been doing, sort of dripping hot wax onto a bust! I mean, my life-long mentor who passed a few years ago...like, I’m painting his portrait and watching you teach in between painting sessions, and suddenly I saw the lights in the room where he had been sitting in the reference photo I was using, and I saw the shape of his entire head suddenly pop into focus! I THANK YOU A ZILLION TIMES. I’ve been looking for a key to unlock things for a long long time, and I got it, courtesy of your free videos. I’ll be haunting your halls from now on, Mister! YUPARI! You are such a fantastic teacher. I was a professor in grad school for decades, parallel to my other career teaching creativity workshops, and I always strove to do what you do, give openly fully of myself. I cannot express...the gratitude. MAN...I love insights! You’re the absolute best!

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. My portraits are falling short on the side of realism. I've been told not to blend and after watching you, I realize I just need to soften my edges. I cannot wait to start on my next portrait! Thanks again😍

This was a very good demo of the under painting process. The color layering, or what we actually do afterwards was very helpful. (Just wish we could have seen you paint the eye that was in shadow, her right eye…that is such a tricky area to make it appear like an eye without leaving just a dark shape. Any comments about what your process was with that area?) Thanks so much for this professionally made video!!!!

Well done, Yupari. Love your approach to painting in a loose manner and tighten up a bit as you get near the end. Soft edges is nice too. :)

The paint (even in the underpainting) appear more saturated and luminous than usual in this video...was it the oil primed canvas or did you adjust your studio lighting? Thanks!

how do you plan your pallette? is it basically an educated guess/decision, or are you checking it somehow against the photo reference?

So far your method makes the most sense.
Love your common sense approach to a portrait. I've been beating myself over one minute areas and felt failed but I am going to try this method your method and see how I survive my frustration.
      BIG THANK YOU🤗

when you say that value is the key to realism, would you say that is 'value order' rather than 'value accuracy'? it seems to me by your paintings that you are not necessarily looking to replicate the exact values of the reference, rather you are doing your own thing with it, but at the same time getting them in the right order
