Hi Andrew. I'm trying to understand how artists like yourself, Casey Baugh, David Jon Kasan et al. are able to get accurate placement of the eyes, nose and mouth and their actual length and size. I never see you, Casey Baugh or David Kassan extend their arm out holding the pencil/brush doing stick measuring to measure out the placement of the eyes, nose and mouth or measure the length of the mouth line. All I see you guys do is intuitive quick block ins with the brush determining the basic eye shadows and from there you immediately with a few strokes determine the length of the nose etc. Whereas me, on the other hand, I have to physically measure out the distance of the eye width between the eyes, the length of the eye and then measure out the distance of the bottom nose line etc. because I know that being only a few millimeters off the face looks distorted. How the hell do you guys do it without physically measuring the size of the eyes, nose and mouth and the distances between them by extending your arm out holding the pencil/brush as measuring tool ? This really bothers me and I don't understand what great artists like yourselves do in getting accuracy of the proportions. Painting on colour is the last thing that bothers me. I just don't understand how you, Casey Baugh and David Kassan do without actually measuring the distances. Thanks.
I cannot possibly comment on how Casey or David do it, because I am me. I will only speak to that. Whilst I know their work, I don't know them, and have not seen their tutorials. You would have noticed that here in this episode, I actually got it wrong. I did find a way to fix it. For me it's much more straight forward to fix something you now is wrong than to just nail it. My methodologies change all the time, and I don't have a set routine. This allows me to teach a wide variety of techniques. Here, I did the best I could in the block in, then after modelling I changed and tweaked things when I realised it was off. The trick is to identify where the painting is inaccurate. The exact method is in my bonus content available to subscribers on my website, but suffice to say I used a method that allowed for a direct comparison with my reference. This portrait was not painted from life, but in the studio, which allowed me the time to perfect it. I hope this helps. There is no direct way to approach this, find a way that works for you and perhaps you won't be as bothered. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks Andrew for taking the time to give an answer to my reply. All I can say is your block ins are more or less painted in accurately on the first attempt which explains why you are an excellent artist whereas people like me struggle and have to resort to nitty-picky measuring. Anyway, thanks for your time.
You just became my new teacher. I once heard from a life coach that when looking for a mentor or teacher, look for someone who has achieved the thing you want to achieve. You are the artist that I have wanted to be. I have spent nearly 19 years focused on parenting. Now is the time to go for my dreams! Thank you for the inspiration and the availability of instruction!
Andrew loves painting hyper-realistic paintings that are better than 90% of other artists and then saying "And now were done with the block-in/ now we can move onto the actual piece, etc. Mans just a different breed.
+Ricky Liauw You can't, but you will. ;) I don't like bullshits like "if you want something that bad you will have it" and stuffs like that but, seriously, if you practice a lot and take it step by step and you do something for 10.000 times, you will become really good at it. You need to keep in mind always that Art is something that will grow old in you at the same pace with you.
“One of the reasons you stay as an artist mate, is that you get these unknown highs that you can’t get any other way. You created it yourself!”. Def gonna remember this one
I just started painting a month or so ago. I'm 53. I'm in love with it and your channel is inspiration for me. I must say, I am impressed with your work and method of instruction. Thank you
Your work is beyond phenomenal. In fact, I just don't have the correct word to describe how good it is. I have only just discovered painting now and don't have that many years left of life to ever wish to get to your level :( looking forward to watching all your other videos. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us.......................
Andrew telling us 100 hours of studio time is great it really helps an amateur like me understand why I might have an ok painting after2-3 hours. Lots of artists forget that and that it took 3 weeks. Thank you!
I caught myself smiling so big when Russel said he loves it & he sees his Dad. You did a super awesome job, Andrew. Such a beautiful painting. You’re amazing. ❤️🙌🏽😁
Pablo B yeah I was thinking he was seriously crazy a couple of times in that video and thought I will carry on watching to see if he goes batshit crazy. I was so wrong! Wow! I think the sketch was ace, the second one had the likeness but yes those corrections were needed. now I see how I can repair my paintings that just stopped cos I knew it was slightly different to what I was aiming for. Thank you!!!
Thank you for showing the mistakes and corrections. Often it seems that professional artists never make mistakes, and it can be quite depressing, when the time comes to face my own errors. Seeing how you corrected the mistakes was exceptionally educational.
There are some abilities one sees in and of a person and you immediately know you are witnessing true brilliance, and not just simply a talent. A genius that does not come specifically from being taught by another, but something that is almost paranormal, otherworldly. I believe Andrew Tischler is one of the people who has that type of talent. These are the people who will save this wretched planet.
This portrait moved me to tears. You really nailed it! And the comment that was made about the high you get as an artist, makes me realise I really need to get back to the brushes. Always inspiring Andrew, Thankyou.
I very much appreciated the showing of your realization of the necessary adjustments and then making them, so as to show that everyone makes mistakes, it's how you deal with them that determines ones own success or failure.
Wow. This painting has so much life and soul oozing out of it. It's one thing to "carbon-copy" paint, it's another to capture and release the essence of what you are wanting to portray. I'm blown away. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos!
Wow! You are incredibly talented! I thought your first painting was amazing. Love seeing you together and feel so privileged to have seen two wonderful artists spending quality time together.Your final work is breathtaking! God bless you both for allowing us into your world!
Here I am..so stressed of myself when I couldn't balance the distance of my portraits eyes..yet I'm amateur..now I realized even professional artist's do makes mistakes as well.. hats off to you Sir! Such a humble artist to admit the imperfections of his work..
Great tutorial. As I am a beginner, I was so inspired by this. I am in the midst of trying to present my co-workers with a "Storytime" painting of a Librarian reading to the children in her class. I will be retiring next month and wanted to present it to them before I leave. I am so out of my element but watching tutorials helps me see all of the layers and light, etc. Thanks so much Andrew!!!!
Thank you for sharing your mistakes. We all have this, is so validating to hear professional artists go through this too. Your work is phenomenal and you seem like a really genuine human. Thanks for building such a nice community.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!! Hard to believe that, that's only paint that was moved around on a canvas, yet it looks like a photograph!!!! INCREDIBLE TALENT!!!!
I like the fact that you didn't skip or rush through your mistake. You owned it and fixed it. Some/most artists find this hard to admit and fix. Great end result👍
I LOVE that you included the clip of you becoming frustrated or annoyed by the painting! So relatable and amazing to see that even the best of painters have their difficult moments, haha! Wonderful personality!
Whenever I feel lack of motivation or my artwork doesn't go well,I come to ur channel n watch ur videos again n again! They r truly gems..so precious! Thanx for creating them, thanx for keeping us motivated :*

Hey Andrew Sir, I like your Painting and the way you explain while painting.... Thank you for this. I am in learning phase and will surely follow your art techniques.... Can you please share any reference for mixing colours and how to prepare oil colour for producing shiny effects ??
I have limited paints and a few cheap brushes and only paper to paint on, do you have tips for that? I can't even paint an eye without becoming frustrated.
+Sandeep Soni , Producing shiny effects is all a trick in layering colours. There is no easy way to answer this. I would start by preserving your light tones. This means holding back on highlights, and allowing the brightest bright to be used at the end. If your painting becomes to washed out, too early, you can loose this tonal effect.
I love how you admit your feeling of 'failure', the emotions, and the Highs and the Lows, which is all part of the struggle to get it right ~ I go from Stress to Insane, to Elated, to Joy, to Despair, and the answer is to just keep going, 'Never Stop ~~~ just work hard' ~ Thx again for the video, Andrew ~~!!!!
Fabulous I love the fact that you show us that you also have mental blocks and come across obstacles in your painting like most of us mere mortals Thank you for showing us your way of correcting those mistakes.
Thanks for sharing your artistic struggles. This is what really helps fellow artists to learn from one another. Unlike those 3-min. hyper-speeded-up videos that show off, but teach and share nothing! Your work is phenomenal; you are a master artist.
Excellent video Andrew, honest, insightful and entertaining. The production value is very high too, what a great way to kick off a new series! Have loved seeing your work in Australian Artist magazine and now look forward to seeing it come to life on RUclips 😀
Honestly I am just blown away by this. That painting is so alive, its just absolutely stunning. I admire your work and am so glad you've decided to share your talent with the world. How inspiring!!
i think youre great at what you do and its very inspiring to me as a beginner use to paint long ago but am not very good with painting faces although i can draw them very well thank you and i would like to see more
I really love how you openly talked about not being happy with your painting at some stage and taking us through your process of correcting it without restarting over again! And that """sketch""" of yours is what I would consider a freakin masterpiece on its own, at least if it came out of my brushes haha
Andrew your brush strokes and colour composition tells that you are the best artist in the world. The depth of realism is just masterclass in your painting.I believe I got you as my tutor.
This was excellent. To be honest I would have taken the first draft of the painting with " mistakes", lol. Love your spirit and dedication. Subscribed!
Thank you so much for walking through the mistake/ correction phase. This is where I struggle the most!! It's reassuring to watch you adjust it so that I can go faster in my block in stage knowing it can all be resolved in the end
awesome painting of a great man, andrew. i can certainly see why you wanted to paint his portrait....well done! ps- thank you for your great workshop we attended on the swan river last week. i learned a lot from you and im looking forward to tuning in to more youtube vids now as well. cheers mate. ian
I LOVE that you went through the honesty of letting us see that you had 'gone astray'...this is absolutely a wonderful portrait. Thank you for sharing.
Your painting style is awesome. The way you explain "holding back the tones" in order to add the highlights and darks on top. Your paintings have so much color and levels of layering it just pops.
It's Mesmerising watching an artist like you bring a portrait to life.I am a pretty decent artist myself, and I aspire to be the best I can be at my chosen medium. But watching you go through the mill, trying to decide wether or not to begin the painting, reminded me of the highs and lows artists can go through during the process of creating something. The number one thing you have to have,to be a successful artist,is self belief. You believed you could bring the painting back to where you wanted it,and therefore you achieved it.I was absolutely awe struck at the finished result,Wow! What a talent.
This is the best tutorial I have ever seen. That you let us in on correcting your "mistakes" is very good. It gave me hope when I paint. Are you painting with oils?
I really enjoy Belgian linen. Canvas is okay too, but I prefer surfaces that have been pre-primed. This is just a convenience thing, but Claessons make one that is triple primed and ready to go with oil paint. It's pricey, but worth the investment if you are selling your work. Also, I custom stretch my work. I used to buy canvasses off the shelf, but I often found that they didn't make the sizes I wanted to use. So now I have lengths up in the studio to knock frames together and then stretch! Hope that helps. :)
***** yes! Thank you! And yes my work will be up for sale soon in an Art Gallery so I do want nothing but the best in expressing myself. Thank you again! Below is acrylic that I wanted to show you. _lh3.googleusercontent.com/k8GdXfEWu9XexD4hmlE_FOxC5AZujbFAQCsFJW2erlQnyYkTbc9Xg9yfrxK7tHUGeMPDwHd3OuI_
Portraiture...the sign of being an accomplished artist in my opinion. Finding it a challenge at the minute, getting a likeness is some task. Great video, thanks for the inspiration.
I love the honesty in the making of this work. It’s a real education to witness a great artist realise that the work has gone adrift and I think the way Andrew deals with it was the best solution. Brilliant final result, well done.
All I can say is, mate, YOU are bloody amazing......i love your work, ive been magnifying it to look at your colours and brush strokes and sometimes i can't believe its a painting (ive looked at a few of your paintings)....this portrait is so good, you are truly an artist. You inspire me. Thank you!
I’m so glad I found your site. I learn more from you than years I spent in College. I’m going to be seventy, but painting makes me feel young inside. Pure joy you have given me. Thank you Andrew.
Carravagio springs to mind, you just have a natural command to the flow of the piece.every layer serving a distinct purpose.leading to a smooth, almost photographic overall impression...Beautiful work, and a great tutorial to boot.Thank you.
Andrew, I really appreciated how you showed your mistakes and how you learned from them allowing us all to also learn. Very cool. Thanks for this video!
Absolutely wonderful documentary of Russell Petherbridge's portrait. Thank you for including the part where you decided to tweak a little here, a little there. What a wonderful compliment Mr Petherbridge gave you. Well done!
always inspired and learn something from every tutorial you have made, find portraits the hardest not due my knowledge but my disability, after a major stroke has taken my left side my dominant side now training my right hand to paint is my problem detail paintings are very difficult but determined to overcome and thank Andrew for the inspiration to do so,nothing like his hornbill paintings personally but love them all and his technigue of teaching/ talking make his the best for me, thanks a million buddy for what you do
Andrew, Watching your videos over and over again, what can I say but ...no words really. God has given a few people the gift of giving life in a different angle, as it were. You've inspired me to paint my parents and will show you after a couple of years. Thank you for your kindness in sharing your skills and time. Javed Otto A
Andrew is an amazing artist. I found that he always shares his knowledge so that beginners understand his method of working. Andrew Tischler’s video lessons are excellent. He is very clear in his explanations. Video making is also superb: the clarity, the lighting, the voice - everything is excellent. These videos have helped me a lot in understanding the complete process of painting. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, sir.

Andrew Tischler awesome!!
5:22 "Finally my sketch is finished!"
*WHAT?*
Panacea exactly!
My point
Ha ha! I know!
well, me too... but lets be honest, this guy is maybe finest artist of our times... at least one of!
And then you see the final piece and just go "... Well, damn."
Then throw all your art stuff in the bin.
I am 81 and i am inspired to try to paint ( if only I could have been inspired earlier in my life} You are fantastic.
congratulations.
JIM
Never too late! I wish you the best of luck
It's never too late!
Ohh that’s the sweetest thing I read today. I hope you are painting & if not you pick it up again.
Hope you were able to start learning :>
I celebrate you discovered a new way to express your soul. 💙
Something about him saying he could see his dad coming through made me tear up. The depth of interconnection that good art brings out in us is cosmic

5:22 "Finally my SKETCH?? is finished" Erm..
EDIT: After watching to the end, might I say what a stunning painting it really is. First class.
lol i can't even produce something as close as his SKETCH
"sketch" lol
@Ricky Liauw yes you can, you just have to practice and take your time
years of practice you mean
+Ricky Liauw You can't, but you will. ;) I don't like bullshits like "if you want something that bad you will have it" and stuffs like that but, seriously, if you practice a lot and take it step by step and you do something for 10.000 times, you will become really good at it. This is so inspiring. A shift in a few millimeters can cause a shift in the character - that's a real gem out there. You're great Andrew.
That's a sketch!? man, that's a masterpiece already.
Your work is beyond phenomenal. In fact, I just don't have the correct word to describe how good it is. I have subscribed, first time I saw your work :)
You’re remarkable. God has gifted you in a special way. The kind of beauty and excellence that is emotionally moving.
Avril Retief there’s certainly time left! I may not know you, but I’m cheering you on! You can do it, and I think you’ll be marvelous! 🥰🖤
You'd be surprised to discover how quickly you can become a pro with the right techniques and tips!
Andrew telling us 100 hours of studio time is great it really helps an amateur like me understand why I might have an ok painting after2-3 hours.
Lots of artists forget that and that it took 3 weeks.
Thank you!
Yeah...these things take time! You have to stick with it!
I caught myself smiling so big when Russel said he loves it & he sees his Dad. You did a super awesome job, Andrew. Such a beautiful painting. You’re amazing. ❤️🙌🏽😁
As a portrait painter I cant thank you wnough for the correcting features tips... a problem to us all. Thanks!
Second that! Cheers Andrew:)

there is something so gratifying as an artist to make another artist genuinely smile and when reacting to your work with real honesty.
HE SAID SKETCH AND I DIED A LITTLE LY SKETCHES ARE STICKFIGURES
do more skethes then. after a few thousand, they won't be stick figures anymore.
THAT WAS LITERALLY MY RESPONSE TOO HAHAHA
I'm here 6yrs later.. and I'm laughing 😅😅
Lmfaooo Fr though it’s absurd
Thank you for showing the mistakes and corrections. Often it seems that professional artists never make mistakes, and it can be quite depressing, when the time comes to face my own errors. Seeing how you corrected the mistakes was exceptionally educational.
I was like "What are you talking about! That's perfect!" and as soon as you changed the eyes I was like "Yea that's much better..."
I like how open you are about your mistakes and how hard it is to face them. Artists need to hear that kind of openness
browsing through your channel and geeking out! Love your work!
Haha! Thank you!

This portrait moved me to tears. You really nailed it! And the comment that was made about the high you get as an artist, makes me realise I really need to get back to the brushes. Always inspiring Andrew, Thankyou.

Hey Andrew Sir,
I like your Painting and the way you explain while painting....
What kind of paints and what kind of paper do you have?
polymath7 I used to have acrylic but now I have oil. I use a matte base then use a board.
Thank you Andrew you enspire me because you also get tired and carried away. it makes me feel there is hope for us aspiring artists.
Wow, Andrew, your painting is beyond words! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent with us all! I'm so happy I found your videos!
Been an art teacher myself and an artist. After watching your videos, its like learning to paint all over again. Best

Unbelievable! What an inspiration. Thank you!
Not an artist, just REALLY enjoying watching Andrew paint. AMAZING!!!
I sub'ed just from seeing the thumb nail before I even watched the video.

Great work sir,,, i love to painting of nature and off course architecture., thanks for this amazing video.. keep it up
Thank you so much for walking through the mistake/ correction phase. This is where I struggle the most!! It's reassuring to watch you adjust it so that I can go faster in my block in stage knowing it can all be resolved in the end
awesome painting of a great man, andrew.
i can certainly see why you wanted to paint his portrait....well done!
ps- thank you for your great workshop we attended on the swan river last week.
i learned a lot from you and im looking forward to tuning in to more youtube vids now as well.
cheers mate.
ian
Thanks for the Comment Ian!
I LOVE that you went through the honesty of letting us see that you had 'gone astray'...this is absolutely a wonderful portrait. Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely fantastic stuff mate! Can't wait to see more!
Your painting style is awesome. The way you explain "holding back the tones" in order to add the highlights and darks on top. Your paintings have so much color and levels of layering it just pops.
Really inspiring!
Hey Thanks a bunch for the comment. I appreciate this, and glad it hit home for you!
This is the best tutorial I have ever seen. That you let us in on correcting your "mistakes" is very good. It gave me hope when I paint. Are you painting with oils?
I love to see the journey from frustration to fix, to perfection. THANK YOU! It is brave and it is necessary.
im the 13th thousand subscriber!!!!!! im special
I am almost two years so far into painting and I surely admire your work sir.
oil or acrylic
Oil
*****
Thanks! I've been working with acrylics only so far. Question ? What type of canvas do you recommend for Oils?

Your are the modern Albrecht Dürer. A gift like this is only passed out every 500 years.
Portraiture...the sign of being an accomplished artist in my opinion. Finding it a challenge at the minute, getting a likeness is some task. Great video, thanks for the inspiration.
Best moment in the clip: when you admit you lost the way. Just great! Thank you for just sharing this moment, and how you came over it.
Andrew....I love this portrait.
You captured his soul... and a beautiful soul that is.
Incredible - really captured the essence of your sitter. He has a fantastic face that deserved to be painted.
I don't know what's more beautiful...you or your talent! Thank you for the wonderful tips!
I love the honesty in the making of this work. It’s a real education to witness a great artist realise that the work has gone adrift and I think the way Andrew deals with it was the best solution. Brilliant final result, well done.
love it, love the way it went wrong too. your videos are always a joy to watch. thank you.
At 5 minutes I realized his smaller painting was only his 'sketch'. It looked so photographic and certainly worthy of displaying.
Absolutely wonderful documentary of Russell Petherbridge's portrait. Thank you for including the part where you decided to tweak a little here, a little there. What a wonderful compliment Mr Petherbridge gave you. Well done!
always inspired and learn something from every tutorial you have made, find portraits the hardest not due my knowledge but my disability, after a major stroke has taken my left side my dominant side now training my right hand to paint is my problem detail paintings are very difficult but determined to overcome and thank Andrew for the inspiration to do so,nothing like his hornbill paintings personally but love them all and his technigue of teaching/ talking make his the best for me, thanks a million buddy for what you do
a truly artist like you know when is failed but try to fix it soon as posible, awesome painting, the face on rusell is priceless
Andrew,
Watching your videos over and over again, what can I say but ...no words really.
God has given a few people the gift of giving life in a different angle, as it were.
You've inspired me to paint my parents and will show you after a couple of years.
Thank you for your kindness in sharing your skills and time.

Thanks so much for the comment Javed!
i love it how you corrected your mistakes. it's a great lesson in life.. well, actually art is just connected to life
That was awesome Russell, you made the old guy feel so good! He was proud to show up on your canvas…
Andrew your work is INSANE!! it's like HD real life photograph.I can't believe it's a painting!
