Hi Andrew, I am an American amateur painter, age 79. I love your teaching lessons and your skill is excellent in terms of color and the way you blend them. I am learning so much, and inspired to start painting again. I will order your videos as well and order the oil paints and brand you suggest, it seems to flow so well. I watch your videos every day. Again, thank you for helping and inspiring me.
Obviously, you have great knowledge, of the process, but from someone who struggles daily with portraiture, you were touched by God. You have such command of light and your paintings seem to have a quality of almost inner realism, if that makes sense, like you capture their soul. I admire your work, I hope you never stop, although there are moments when its not there, I know, I feel that fire within you.
Charles Nolan You will get there! Don't you dare look at skill such as Andrew's and view it as unachievable. It is, without a doubt. You just need the dedication and time to develop.
Wow. There is no way any photoshopers could ever mach the beauty and quality demonstrated here in this video. Oil painting was, is, and will always be the most beautiful form of art.
I love this painting SO MUCH. I have a self portrait due in my beginning painting class and I watched this video over and over again to try to emulate the process. I'm working with acrylics so.... it was a struggle. But I am so inspired by your love of capturing people as if you were in the middle of conversation with them. It reminds me of how Bernini wanted to convey people in his sculptures. Thank you for the inspiration!

Each video has something so new and fresh, thank you again for your generosity!

Now all I need to work on is maintaining my patience throughout a painting like you so well do! Thanks again.

There are several ways to know. But first it's important to begin with the end in mind. You have to have a goal. I know where the finish line s from the outset. Another way is to realise the point where your brushstrokes have little effectiveness. If you keep adding marks that add nothing to the picture, better stop! Or another way is to have the client knocking on your door, prying the painting from your hands.
I didn't do with oil painting for very long time. I'v been just thinking to use it again. By this video I'm really inspired so much. You're missing out ALL the essential techniques, like how to blend, how munch linseed to use, what brushes, etc. I'm not learning anything. I'm simply watching you paint.
Please don't be negative about my comment. I'm simply trying to learn. I am in the middle of a Fine Art Degree, I have no formal training, they invited me to do the degree on the strength of my work completed during two short water colour classes I attended. with regards to working with oil paints, I have done a few day classes on landscapes but portraiture is something else entirely. How do I blend the paint? Dry brush? What size? when using a small brush, do I dilute the oil paint with linseed to make it more pliable? do I blend with a smaller brush on smaller area? Dry or with linseed? I'm simply asking for a literal step by step proper tutorial without omitting things you may see as being obvious. A tutorial for a beginner.
Charlotte, I am not being negative. Chill. Go back and read your original comment. How did you want me to receive your comment? Regardless, I'll do my best to answer you. Having gone through a Fine Art degree myself, I hear where you are coming from. They will probably not teach you the essential techniques. Now, whilst I try to make a show about painting, these episodes are meant to be lighter and a little more entertaining. I am making full length tutorials which will be available for sale through my website. If you like me work and want to learn how I do it, then I break down the essential techniques in these demonstrations. We have literally just started, so bear with us, more episodes are coming out soon as well as DVD's. I am positive you will find something beneficial in the content we provide here, or on our website. (links are in the description.)
I appreciate you taking the time to discuss this with me. It's very kind of you. I will happily pay for a tutorial as long as it includes every detail, as I said, as if you were teaching an individual who has never before picked up a brush or knew what linseed oil was. I've watched so many youtube "tutorials" on how to paint a portrait in oil, and the ones that are a literal step by step process are not in English unfortunately. You miss the important details like how to load a brush correctly, what size brush to use, what type of brush, how to mix the paint with linseed to allow it to flow, there's just so much to learn. You certainly have the best control over this particular medium than any other artist I've come across. Your skill is both beautiful and overwhelming. I don't know if you ever went through the stage of hating yourself whilst learning to paint, but I'm at that stage now. Everything I do is terrible. It's incredibly frustrating and does knock the wind out of you, I must say. Though I am persevering.
This video gave me many insights into how to block in a face and the use of light and shadow. I am just beginning to venture into portraits.....the most time consuming and intensive oil painting there is. I am so impatient to finish everything. The patience required to do a portrait may be beyond me. This was a beautiful painting. Thank you for posting.
i love to see the community you have--paintings of and with other painters/artisans/friends, a pal who makes the paints, oleogel, ability to travel and meet others...i have not found this sort of interaction and support within my own community.
Great work! I really enjoy your comments as you go along - that helps a lot. I have been painting watercolor on aquabord for years and decided to try oil. It is so different but I am finally starting to enjoy it. It really helps to see how you solve some potential problems and to be PATIENT! Thank you .
as a fine art student myself, thank you for always reminding me that there's always room to improve and to be patient. you have mad skills, can't wait till i can finally be as good as you. waiting for that day. :)
You are a great artist and also a teacher. The fact that you give information, even on how to make colors, is amazing to me. Your kindness is beyond limits! I would like to see a video on how yellow is made in the power or just the paint we use in painting. I haven't seen these powders here in US maybe I should look in the Internet to find out. I saw an artist once a while ago using the powders and mixing with whatever. I always buy the tubes. But it is interesting to know where these color powders come from and how to mix them for a better quality painting. I am 69 years old Andrew and self taught, I struggle in many ways. I deeply appreciate your videos and kindness. Thank you again for a great video.
i find your step by step clear explanations so helpful. as a painter that deals with neurological and visual issues, well, the words combined with the demos make the project and process so much clearer. thanks so much andrew. all the best to you from a fellow painter :)
Just started my 2nd portrait and boy was your subject right when he said portrait painting is the most difficult process in painting. Your videos are really helping me work thru the process and I know it is going to take a lot of time before I get it but, thanks to you I know i will make it!

You are such a talented artist, and even more, a gifted teacher. Truly inspiring! Thank you for your encouraging and kind tutorials.
So young, yet so damn skilled. Young man, thank you for doing this video, it was an honor to see you in action. Well Done.
Very nice...and David's reaction almost had me shed tears of joy
I learned from you probably one of the most important elements to paintings, preserving the tones!
...this has to be the 20th time I've reviewed your video...it's just sooooo inspirational...
As a non-artist it is amazing to see the initial blobs and shapes transform into a face. Mesmerizing and magical!
his expression in seeing the painting says it all-wow
THIS WAS EVEN MORE NATURAL THAN PHOTOGRAPHS, WELL DONE
i love to see the community you have--paintings of and with other painters/artisans/friends, a pal who makes the paints, oleogel, ability to travel and meet others...i have not found this sort of interaction and support within my own community.
Wow! Wow! Wow!
Great work! I really enjoy your comments as you go along - that helps a lot. I have been painting watercolor on aquabord for years and decided to try oil. It is so different but I am finally starting to enjoy it. It really helps to see how you solve some potential problems and to be PATIENT! Thank you .
I find it amazing how much of your own emotion and feeling comes through in a life like portrait, especially of a good friend.
Your artistic abilities are transcendent. I can’t imagine being this good at anything let alone art even though I am at art school!
Not only was that an absolutely stunning portrait but you are such an excellent teacher. You really inspire me to get to my easel. Bravo!
Breathtakingly gorgeous work. Beyond words.
as a fine art student myself, thank you for always reminding me that there's always room to improve and to be patient. you have mad skills, can't wait till i can finally be as good as you. waiting for that day. :)
Wow!!! Amazing technique and detail. I am blown away.
Certainly, you're one of the best five portrait artists in the world.
Love your music! My heart just starts digesting the haunting perception & appreciation of your talent.
Wow...wow... I mean...Just WOW!!!! Ur so blessed Andrew!... U got a great talent!! Keep it up...
Just started my 2nd portrait and boy was your subject right when he said portrait painting is the most difficult process in painting. Your videos are really helping me work thru the process and I know it is going to take a lot of time before I get it but, thanks to you I know i will make it!
The painting came out so cool, it wasn't just an accurate copy, but the essence of the moment and persons character came through and it had a nice mood to it
Cheers for your comment Colin
Colin Ebanks Hello my name is adolfo grandson i am part of an association of painters who paint with their mouths and feet created a channel recently got a big dream i'd like your picture a strong hug
The attention to detail is incredible
Your are a real artist ! Gosh ! I am french, I live near Aix-en- Provence ; I have seen the studio of Cézanne and the scenaries around with lots of emotions! I love abstract but I do admire your work . Merci!
Andrew, you are a true master - love the work. Your greatness is more than your art and what you give the world in providing such beauty - the way you give back, e-mentoring future generations is what makes you grand master. The time and effort you put into the video process keeps getting better. You manner is very soothing and honest. Would love to see the paint maker create more in-depth technical videos - if he could do as you do - give back his knowledge of color - wow!
Andrew, you are very good. I am a reasonably good amateur artist and thus, can fully appreciate talent and ability and technique when I see it/them. It was a pleasure watching you paint a portrait of David.
